b) Reasons for applying for scholarship


I am applying for this scholarship as I come from a middle-income family and my parents are not financially capable to pay for my pre-university studies in colleges or universities. On the other hand, I feel that I am academically qualified to pursue a scholarship as I have a good consistent academic record in my school and I have acquired 9A+s in the recent SPM examination. In addition, I also have been active in my co-curricular activities in school as shown in my participation in the Prefect Board and awards from various essay-writing competitions and harmonica competitions across the region. Finally, with this scholarship I will be more diligent and focused than before in my studies and in achieving my goal of earning my first degree with first class honours.

My career aspiration is to be an accountant as it really suits me as a person who is comfortable with numbers and I like to face the challenges the field of Accountancy has to offer. Although I was a Science Stream student, I have always taken a liking in the Accountancy subject since I was first introduced to some of its basic knowledge in the Living Skills subject when I was in Form 3. Hence, the next year,. I decided to take up Principles of Accounting subject as an extra subject to explore further in the field of Accountancy. In spite of various challenges such as attending extra classes and juggling studying with co-curricular activities, I managed to cope and even scored a fine result in my SPM examination last year including obtaining an A+ in Accounting with a LCCI Level 2 Cerfiticate for Book-keeping and Accounts. This proves that my perseverance had paid off and I have started to paved way for myself to be an charted accountant. In addition, I believe I possess the required skills to become a successful accountant as I am a critical and analytical thinker, a good team player and being able to manage time efficiently besides having attention to detail. Besides, as a prefect in school, I have acquired strong interpersonal skills and leadership required to lead a team to success. On the other hand, one of my main my career objectives is to take up membership in an accredited professional accounting association, preferably ACCA or CPA, as a professional qualification surely will act as a platform for me to accelerate my career and achieve personal financial goals. I also aim to work for one of the Big Five accountancy firms, notably BDO, at some point of my career as I would gain valuable experience and exposure plus the opportunity to work with professionals in a highly competitive environment. With this scholarship, I will certainly be more diligent and focused on my studies. Above all, I will not back down from daunting tasks and challenges ahead of me, but instead my determination and persistence to improve myself will guide me the way to success. Moreover, I will not be easily deterred from my aspirations and my goal of earning my first degree with first class honours before ultimately becoming a world-class charted accountant.

Why do you choose the intended field of study and what is your study plan (Maximum of 300 words) I have chosen the Accounting Course as it really suits me as a person who is comfortable with numbers and aspire to pursue a career in Accountancy. I believe I possess the required skills to become a successful accountant as I am a critical and analytical thinker, a good team player, possess good leadership and interpersonal skills and able to manage time efficiently besides having attention to detail. For my pre-university studies, I plan to take up A-Levels locally and I hope to pursue my degree in a reputable university overseas, notably in the United States, United Kingdom or Australia. After graduating, my next aim is to take up membership in an accredited professional accounting association, preferably CIMA, ACCA or CPA, as a professional qualification surely will act as a platform for me to accelerate my career and achieve personal financial goals. I also aim to take up internship or to work for one of the Big Four accountancy firms, notably Deloitte or Ernst & Young, at some point of my career as I would gain valuable exposure and the opportunity to work with professionals in a highly competitive environment. (190 words) Why do you think you deserve UEM Scholarship (Maximum of 300 words) I deserve the UEM scholarship as I have an excellent academic track record and I am also active in my co-curicular activities in school. Academically speaking, I have scored consistent results in my school and I have successfully acquired 9A+s in the recent SPM examination. In addition, as a prefect, I have honed my leadership and interpersonal skills from my daily management of students besides having strong communication skills. The various intense training in the Police Cadet has also instilled discipline and be tough mentally to face any challenges that come in my way. Moreover, I have proven that I have a flair for writing as shown in my awards from various essay-writing competitions, most notably the Bronze Award in the Commonwealth Essay Competition 2010. Besides, I have competed internationally with my harmonica band in the 8th Asia Pacific Harmonica Festival last year, winning a Gold Prize and a 2nd-place finish in the process.
