ThankyouforchoosingYellowDogLinux! WhenSonyComputerEntertainmentdesignedthePLAYSTATION3(PS3),itwasfully intendedthatyou,aPS3ownercouldplaygames,watchmovies,viewphotos,listento music,andrunafullfeaturedLinuxoperatingsystemthattransformsyourPS3intoahome computer. YellowDogLinuxforPS3combinesasimpletousegraphicalinstallerwithleadingedge componentsandafoundationofmusthavehome,office,andserverapplications.Everything youneedtobrowsetheweb,checkandcomposeemail,doyourschoolhomeworkortake yourofficeworkhomeisincludedwithmorethan2000packagesontheInstallDVD.

WhereisYellowDogLinuxInstalled?
ThedriveinstalledinyourPS3shipswithjustonelargepartition,alogicaldivisionofthedrive intouniquesectorsfortheorganizationandprotectionofdata. BeforeyouinstallYellowDogLinux,youwillusethePS3GameOStosplitthedriveinto2 majorpartitions:

oneforsavinggamedata,music,andphotos theotherforYellowDogLinux

Inthisrespect,boththeGameOSandYellowDogLinuxmaintaintheirownuniquevolumes onwhichtostoredata.

TwoOperatingSystemsonmyPS3?
FollowingtheinstallationofYellowDogLinuxonyourPS3,therewillbe2operatingsystems: theGameOSandYellowDogLinux(YDL). TheGameOSistheoperatingsystemthatshipspreinstalledonPS3.Itisalsoreferredtoas ahypervisor,anoperatingsystemthatprovidesachannelofcommunicationbetweenthe outsideworld(you,yourgamecontroller,themonitor)andthebuiltinhardware(CPU, motherboard,RAM,harddrive,andI/Oports). Whenyouusetheonscreenmenus,playagame,watchamovie,orlistentomusic,youare doingsothroughtheGameOS.YellowDogLinuxrunsontopoftheGameOSwhichprovides animportantcommunicationbetweenLinuxandthehardware. Evenifthissoundsabittechnical,itisimportantastheGameOSprovidesalayerof continuityforLinux,makingthedevelopmentandmaintenanceofLinuxforPS3amore predictableprocess.Thismeansyouwillenjoyahigherquality,higherperformanceLinux operatingsystem.WehopeyouenjoyYellowDogLinuxforPS3andwelookforwardto receivingyourfeedback. Thegamecontrollerwillbeusedtoconductall GameOSfunctions. TheUSBkeyboardandmousewillbeusedonce youentertheYDLinstaller.

Step3PowerOn
1. PoweronyourPS3. 2. IfthisisthefirsttimeyouhaveusedyourPS3,youwillbepromptedto:

Step4UpdatetheGameOSandBackupyourData
1. ItisimportanttoupdatetheGameOStothemostcurrentversion,availableforfree fromSony.Toupdate:

SelectSettings>SystemUpdate>UpdateviaInternetandthenfollowthe onscreenpromptstocomplete.

2. IfyouhaveusedyourPS3,itishighlyrecommendedthatyouBACKUPALLGAME, MUSIC,&PHOTODATAbeforeformattingthedriveasalldatawillbelost.

Step5FormattheHardDisk
1. Formattheharddisk:

Select:Settings>SystemSettingsandpressENTERonthekeyboardorthe Xbuttononthegamecontroller. SelectFormatUtility>FormatHardDisk>Yes

2. Next,selectapartitionsettingfortheharddisk:

Select:Custom

3. YouarepresentedwithoptiontoUseAllforthePS3System,Allot10GBtothe OtherOSorAllot10GBtothePS3System.AllocatingthemajorityforYDL(Other OS)isrecommended,independentofthesizeofyourdrive. 4. SelectQuickFormatandYes.YourPS3willnowformatitsinternaldrive. 5. PressXonthecontrollertoEXIT.ThiswillcauseyourPS3toreboot.

Step6InstalltheBootloader
BeforeyouinstallYellowDogLinux,youmusttemporarilytransfercontrolofyourPS3tothe YellowDogLinuxinstaller.Thisisdoneusingabootloader.Thebootloaderinstaller,pre loadedbySonywiththeGameOS,willinstallthebootloader.Thebootloader"kboot"allows theGameOStotransferauthoritytoYellowDogLinux.KbootisincludedontheYDLInstall DVDinthedirectory/PS3/otherosdirectoryandcalled"otheros.bld". Donotturnoffthepowernorremovetherecordingmediumduringinstallation.Interrupting theinstallationprocessmaycausedamage. 1. InsertYDLInstallDVD. 2. FromtheGameOSmenu,select: Settings>SystemSettings>InstallOtherOS 3. YourPS3willnowscantheDVDforthebootloaderinstallerandbootloader. 4. Confirmdiscoveryof"/PS3/otheros/otheros.bld". 5. PressXonthecontrollertostarttheinstallation. 6. Oncetheinstallisfinished,thescreenwillsayInstallcompleted.Thismeansthatthe kbootinstalliscomplete.

Note:YDLhasnotbeeninstalledyet;continuetothenextstep.
7. BackontheGameOSmenu,selectOtherOSinordertobegintheYDLinstall: Settings>SystemSettings>DefaultSystem>OtherOS 8. WhenpromptedtoquitthePS3systemandstarttheothersystem,selectYes.

Step1BegintheInstallationScript
1. ThePS3willbootintothekbootbootloader.Youwillseewhitetextonablackscreen. Thesystemwillstopatthekboot:prompt. kboot: 2. Beforetheinstallertimesout,presstheTABkeyonyourkeyboardtobrowsethrough theavailableinstallmodes.EachtimeyoupresstheTABkey,anotherinstallmodewill bedisplayed.Selectoneofthefollowingoptionstomatchthehighestresolution capabilityofyourmonitor.

Forexample,ifyoumonitoriscapableof1080p,thekbootpromptshouldlooksimilar tothisfollowing: kboot:install_ps3_1080p IfyourmonitorhasonlyComposite(3RCAjacks)theYDLinstallerAnaconda)should defaulttoinstall_text,alowresolutiontextmode.Thiswilllaterrequirecommandline configuration. Ifyouareuncertainofyourhidef(HDMI,Component)monitor'scapability,the720p optionisthebestdefaultchoice. 3. Onceyouselecttheappropriateinstallmode,hitENTERonthekeyboard.Thiswill begintheinstallation.,orAnaconda(theYellowDogLinuxinstaller).

Step2LanguageSelection
1. SelectyourpreferredLanguageconfiguration. 2. ClickNexttoproceed.

Step3KeyboardSelection
1. SelectyourpreferredKeyboardconfiguration. 3. ClickNexttoproceed.

NOTE:IfthisisthefirsttimeinstallingLinuxonyourPS3,youwillbewarned,The partitiontableonthisdeviceps3dawasunreadable....Thisisnormal.Goaheadand selectYestoproceed.

Step4PartitionDrive
Partitioningadrivecreateslogical(ascomparedtophysical)sectionsonyourdrive,each servingthepurposeoforganizingandprotectingdata.YoumayeitherallowtheInstallerto createthepartitionsforyoubyselectingAutomaticPartitioning,orconductthiseffort manuallyviaDiskDruid. 1. Youmaychoosefromoneoffollowingschemes:

Removeallpartitions:onaPS3(ascomparedtoaMac)thiswillproducethe sameresultas"RemoveallLinuxpartitions"(above)astheGameOScannotbe affectedbytheLinuxinstaller.

RemoveallLinuxpartitions:thiswilldeleteandthenreplaceonlyexisting Linuxpartitions.PleasenotethatifyouhavealreadyinstalledLinuxonyour PS3,thisprocedurewillDESTROYALLEXISTINGLINUXDATA.TheGameOS andgamedatawillnotbeharmed.

Keepallpartitionsanduseexistingfreespace:ifyouhaveneverinstalled LinuxonyourPS3,thiswillgeneratethesameresultas"Removeall partitions"(above).

Custom:manuallypartitionusingDiskDruid.Thisisonlyrecommendedfor advancedusers.

MoreAboutCustomPartitioning TheuseofDiskDruidisforadvancedLinuxuserswhodesiretocustomizethe partitioningoftheirdrive.IfyouarenewtoLinux,werecommendyouusethe AutomaticPartitiontooldiscussedearlierinthissection. Ifyouelecttobuildyourpartitionsmanually,youshouldcreatethefollowing: swapusedtotemporarilystoredatanolongerheldinRAM.Swapshouldbenoless than512MB. homebycreatinga"/home"dir,youmayreinstallYDLandpreserveyourhome directory.Thismaybeanysizeyoudesire,butlikelyatleast1GB. /containseverythingelse(/etc,/sbin,/var)andshouldbeatleast10GB.

Step5NetworkConfiguration
1. ThedefaultDHCPenablesyourPS3toautomaticallyobtainanIPaddressfromyour DSLorcablemodemorinofficerouter.Onlyadvanceduserswhohavespecificneeds shouldmanuallyconfigurethisinformation. 2. ClickNexttoproceed.

Step6TimeZoneSelection
1. SelecttheappropriatetimezonebasedonthelocationofthePS3. 2. ClickNexttoproceed.

Step7RootPassword
1. Chooseapasswordthatisatleast8character,bothlettersandnumbersandisnot basedonadictionaryword.Loweranduppercaselettersareunique. RootPasswordGuidelines Donotuseyourbirthday,yourchild'snamespelledbackward,northenameofyour spousefollowedbytheyearyouweremarried.Thesecurityofyourcomputerisonly us.fixstars.com 11

asstrongasyourpasswords.Donotforgetthispassword.Onlyloginasrootifyouare anexperienceduser,asitispossibletoremovefilesordatawhicharerequiredforthe properfunctionofyourLinuxOS. 2. ClickNexttoproceed.

Step8PackageSelection 1. Selectoneofthepredefinedpackagesets:

OfficeandProductivityFormostusers SoftwareDevelopmentForsoftwareengineers WebserverForsystemadministrators

Youmayelecttocustomizethepackagesettobeinstalled,whichmayincreaseor decreasethenumberofapplicationsandtimerequired.Onceupandrunning, additionalpackagesmaybeinstalledusingyumortheAdd/RemoveSoftwareutility. 2. ClickNexttoproceed.

Step9DependencyCheck
1. TheInstallerwillnowcheckforpackagedependencies.Thiswilltake34minutes.

Step10Installation
1. Oncethedependencycheckiscomplete,clickNexttobegintheinstallation. 2. Theinstallcouldtakeupto15minutes,dependingonthenumberofpackagesyou selectedtoinstall. 3. Oncetheinstalliscomplete,clickReboottorestartyourPS3. 4. RemovetheDVD(oritwillbepulledbackintoyourPS3andwillattempttoinstall again).

FirstbootwalksyouthroughAcceptanceoftheLicenseAgreement,DateandTimesettings, YDL.netAccount,SystemUser,andSoundSetup.

LicenseAgreementPleasereadandacceptthisdocument. DateandTimeIfyourPS3willalwaysbeconnectedtotheinternet,selectingNTP willmakecertainyourclockisaccurate.Ifnot,manuallysettheDateandTime. YDL.netUsernameandPasswordIfyouhavepurchasedaYDL.netenhanced account,youhavetheoptiontoenablethesystemtodownloadyumupdatesfromthe YDL.netrepositoriesinsteadoffromthepublicmirrors.Toenablethisfeature,select theYDL.netcheckboxandenteryourYDL.netusernameandpassword.

SystemUserCreateoneuseraccountforyourinitialloginandimmediateaccessto thesystem.Additionalusersmaybeaddedlater.Chooseapasswordthatisatleast8 characters,bothlettersandnumbersandisnotbasedonadictionaryword.Donotuse yourbirthday,yourchild'snamespelledbackward,northenameofyourspouse followedbytheyearyouweremarried.Thesecurityofyourcomputerisonlyasstrong asyourpasswords.

SoundSetupYoumusthaveaudiocablesattachedtoyourmonitor/TVinorderto heartheoutput.Presstheplaybuttonandconfirmthatmusicwasheard.

RUNNINGYELLOWDOGLINUX LoggingIn
Atthegraphicalprompt,entertheusernameandpasswordcreatedduringfirstboot'sSystem Userquery.YouwillthenenterthegraphicaluserinterfacetoYellowDogLinux,featuringthe Enlightenment"E17"desktopenvironment. WithLinux,noonedesktopenvironmentislockedtotheoperatingsystem,grantingendusers roomforcreativity,choice,andavarietyoffeatures. OtherdesktopenvironmentssuchasKDEandGnomeareavailablewiththeYDLInstallDVD orfromonlinerepositories.KDEoffersatightlyintegratedproductiveenvironmentforoffice andeducation.Gnomegenerallycaterstothosewhodesiregreaterroomforcustomization. Gnomeisinstalledbydefaultandmaybeselectedatlogin. YellowDogLinuxdefaultstotheEnlightenment"E17"desktopenvironment.
