"Poetry Month"
April is "Poetry Month," so suggest to your teachers that they use ITV! For students in grades 46, teachers can look at Club Write lesson 4 Poetry. It repeats April 7, 9:309:45 a.m., on channel 325. This series serves as a comprehensive support for developing writing skills in preparation for high school. (Unlimited rights) For all grade levels, teachers may use some of the ITV programs to inspire their students to create poetry of their own! For example - look at programs about nature and animals. Try Zoom (BBC), a series for upper elementary and higher, which explores the miniature world of some of the smallest members of the animal kingdom. For grades 69, try Animals and How They Live that focuses on the physical characteristics, behaviors, life cycles, adaptations, and habitats of various animals. Or use Zoo Minutes with upper elementary through higher grades for a short, minute-long look at nature and animals. If you want some of these lessons, contact your local DELC. (See rights statement with each series in the ITV Link or online ITV Resources book.) For middle and high school students, teachers can look at some of the poets that are part of the Writers Circle series that was produced by WRJA-TV in Sumter. One hundred and seventeen lessons are part of this series and there are some poets included among the writers. See page 75 in the online ITV Resources book for a complete list of authors in each lesson. If you want some of these lessons, contact your local DELC. (Unlimited rights)

Notes
Congratulations to Martha Alewine for receiving the 2005 Distinguished Service Award from the S.C. Association of School Librarians. This award recognizes an individual or organization for contributions to SCASL and/or school media programs throughout our state. Since this award emphasizes service at the state level, an author, illustrator, education, media specialist, business professional, or organization may be nominated. Martha is our library media services professional in the Office of Technology at SDE. She works with ITV and ETV on many projects for K-12 that would not be possible without her hard work, creativity and expertise. We are very proud of her. Well-deserved Martha! Kudos go out to Don Goforth, former Western Piedmont DELC Coordinator who is now teaching at Greenwood High School. The Greenwood High School TV/video production class taught by Don won first place in the high school division in a Public Service Announcement contest sponsored by television station WSPA News Channel 7 in Spartanburg. Their storyboard idea that won was about drinking and driving. The PSA will run on WSPA until the end of December 2005. For more information or to view the PSA, go to www.WSPA.com and click on Caring Carolinas under feature section. We miss you Don, but this is proof you are still doing great things! ITV hopes we had the chance to see you at SCASL! It is always a highlight of our spring to get the opportunity to network with our media specialist friends. And it was great this year to snap many of your smiles with Detective Bonz and his side-kick" Miss Marie! Please continue to keep in touch and share your good ideas! We appreciate all you do to assist teachers and students in using ITVs instructional television resources.

Recertification: 1 Hour or 20 Credits (continued) Science in Focus: Force and Motion for teachers of grades K8 Providing the opportunity to explore science concepts in force and motion, this course allows teachers to obtain a better understanding, helping them to engage students in their own explorations. With science and education experts as guides, participants will learn more about gravity, friction, air resistance, magnetism, and tension through activities, discussions, and demonstrations. Emphasis in the lessons is on helping students connect science to real-world phenomena and a variety of classroom footage is utilized. Participants will design a lesson plan as part of the mini-project requirement for completion of the course. Science in Focus: Shedding Light on Science for teachers of grades K5 Providing an opportunity to study the theme of shedding light, this course offers elementary teachers tips for explaining light in Earth science, chemistry, physics, biology, and space science. Because light is an interdisciplinary study topic, it is easy for classroom activities to make meaningful connections to real-world phenomena. Teachers will investigate the behavior and role of light through studies of the seasons, the production of food by plants, and the weather. Participants will design a lesson plan as part of the mini-project requirement for completion of the course. The Science of Teaching Science for teachers of grades K8 Providing K-8 teachers unique opportunities to explore ways to improve their teaching practices, this course directs their attention to real classroom activities in which they observe other teachers in unrehearsed situations. These "user friendly" videos stimulate the veteran teachers to try different teaching approaches and at the same time provide new teachers excellent "how to" activities for classroom implementation. Participants will design a lesson plan as part of the mini-project requirement for completion of the course. Social Studies in Action: A Methodology Workshop for teachers of grades K5 Providing a methodology framework for teaching social studies focusing on creating effective citizens, this course provides teachers with a stimulating learning experience on ways to connect social studies to the world beyond the classroom. These video lessons, led by Mary A. McFarland, a prominent social studies educator, engage teachers in exploring social studies themes, theories of learning, and teaching strategies through discussions, debates, and activities adapted to a K-5 curriculum. Participants will design a lesson plan as part of the mini-project requirement for completion of the course. Teaching Geography - Annenberg/CPB for teachers of grades 712 To answer questions about determining city location, people migration, and places as influences on the spread of disease, this course offers a strong foundation in geography content along with teaching skills that are outlined in the National Geography Standards. Guided by geography experts' commentary, eight video lessons engage teachers in profiling locations around the globe as well as observing a myriad of classroom activities. Participants will design a lesson plan as part of the mini-project requirement for completion of the course. Write in the Middle: A Workshop for Middle School Teachers for teachers of grades 68 Providing participants with ways to help students become proficient and confident writers, these eight one-hour videos expose them to effective practices and strategies modeled by excellent teachers. Informed by interviews with nationally recognized writers, students become beneficiaries of a productive and positive writing environment. Participants will design a lesson plan as part of the mini-project requirement for completion of the course.
