Education News Parents Can Use SC Teacher Featured

The March edition of the U.S. Department of Educations Education News Parents Can Use, which aired March 15, featured Connie Boleman, art teacher at Saluda River Academy for the Arts in Lexington School District Two. A highly regarded and award-winning visual arts teacher, Connie flew to Washington to be on the national panel to discuss the important topic Arts Education: Improving Students Academic Performance. The success of our democracy relies on providing every child with a high-quality, well-rounded education an education that expects students to master the basics, but that also provides a curriculum rich with drama, music and visual arts. From an early age, regardless of economic background or inherent talent, studying the arts and creating works of art help young people develop critical thinking skills and foster a deeper understanding about the people and cultures or our country and world. Weaving arts in to the school day can also be a powerful tool to help close the achievement gap. Research has shown that when students study the arts, academic performance improves in subjects such as math, reading and writing. The arts are a core academic subject in the NCLB Act. This program discussed these issues and more, providing examples from teachers. Arts Education: Improving Students Academic Performance (March edition of ENPCU) will repeat in the April ARTiculation LIVE! broadcast time, April 19 and 26, 3:004:00 p.m., on channel 304 (Unlimited rights) because Dr. Deb Hoffman, SDE Consultant for the Visual and Performing Arts, wanted all SC educators to be able to access it. ETV StreamlineSC Update on VOD Project

Educators across the state are excited about StreamlineSC. In less than a year, this free video-ondemand service has generated over a quarter of a million views, and is being utilized in 93% of the states school districts. Streamlines detailed reporting utility has shown that schools are buying into this idea of streaming video, viewing information approximately 3,500 times per day. During the recent tsunami disaster, Our Changing Earth, a video containing information on tsunamis, was viewed over 400 times in one day. The Boyhood of Martin Luther King Jr. was popular during the month of January, and students learned about the History of Valentines Day in Holiday Fun Facts. Creating further excitement is an updated version of StreamlineSC, scheduled for release within the next few weeks. This new release brings all of the learning resources from before, complete with a new interface, and the addition of clipart, writing prompts, and an archive of teacher-features. By the end of April, users will also be able to search for select ETV educational productions along with State Department of Education approved ITV programs. Once users have been introduced to the service, the biggest concern becomes how to best utilize the resource in the classroom. To that end, ETV offers several suggestions. Basic training sessions provide an overview of the service, including information on creating quizzes, and inserting video clips and images into a PowerPoint presentation. Advanced sessions detail the use of different types of display equipment including the Aver Key and LCD Projector. During the month of March, ETV aired two teleconferences to address IT issues and utilizing StreamlineSC in the classroom. The presentation will soon be available for viewing via StreamlineSC. ETV has presented information and provided hands-on training to over 3,500 technology leaders and teachers across the state. Most recently, StreamlineSC was featured at conferences for the South Carolina Association for School Librarians and the South Carolina Middle School Association. Is your district/school ready to try StreamlineSC? Written (e-mail) confirmation is needed from a key technology/instructional person from each school district before passcodes are issued. If you are not sure whether your district is using the service, please contact your districts key instructional or technology leader. If they would like to initiate access to the service or schedule a training session, please have them call 1-800-277-3245. If you are currently using the service, we would love to hear from you! It is our goal to share ideas and best practices in an effort to make this an effective and efficient resource. Lets share the wealth! For more information about StreamlineSC, please contact Stephanie Frazier (sfrazier@scetv.org) or Donna Thompson (dthompson@scetv.org). Visit the web site at http://etv.streamlinesc.org.

New Holocaust Special Joins Other Series on Topic

April is "National Holocaust Remembrance Month." ITV will repeat the following programs, which are all recommended for students in grades 512 (please preview): Paul Argiewicz: Holocaust Survivor April11, 8:309:03 a.m. Channel 318 (Unlimited rights) In the fall of 2004, ITV was privileged to have the opportunity to meet Paul Argiewicz, a Holocaust survivor from Salem, Wisconsin, who was visiting friends in Newberry, SC. He graciously allowed his story to be taped to share with students. His personal history is remarkable and his love for our country is truly an inspiration to us all. This program does not contain any graphics or historical photographs. Mr. Argiewicz is just on camera. His words are powerful, his emotions are real, and his message is one that should be shared with middle and high school students. Since he does deal with sensitive material, please advise teachers to preview this program before using it in the classroom. Dum Spiro, Spero While I Breathe, I Hope April 11, 9:159:42 a.m. Channel 318 (Unlimited rights) This half-hour program was produced by ETV with the SC Governors School for the Arts and Humanities and uses the arts to pay tribute to the victims of the Holocaust. The program includes music, dance, and the spoken world performed by 115 residential students from the school. Moral Courage April 11, 10:00 a.m.2:39 p.m. Channel 318 (Unlimited rights) These seven programs use historical newsreel footage to provide students with the background of what was happening in a specific European country during WWII. Each program transitions to that country today, introducing us to the one person who made decisions that impacted not only his or her life, but also the lives of others.

Comments on ITV One-Hour Recertification Courses

The new ITV recertification courses offering one-hour certificate renewal credit or 20 units have proven to be useful to educators. Based on the Annenberg/CPB content, these courses, which contain eight hours of video content, are structured for easy use and focus on activities that teachers can integrate into their curriculum. Lynn Ringley, a teacher from Fort Mill, who took The Arts in Every Classroom said "I enjoyed the content in this course. It was very well presented and had wonderful supplements. Ive recommended this course and Web site to many friends. In reference to The Economics Classroom, Nancy Sellers, a retired educator form Honea Path, said This course was great! These videos gave lots of information. The simulations were great and could be altered for younger students. The simulation outlines and worksheets were a valuable resource. Comments about the science courses came from Wanda Pennekamp, a long-term substitute who lives in Columbia, and Patty Stegura, also from Columbia. Wanda said that she liked everything about Science in Focus: Force and Motion and Patty reported that The Science of Teaching Science was stimulating and interesting. Social Studies in Action was another course that found many fans. Sally Ann Kaiser, a teacher in the Myrtle Beach area, said The handouts that came with the course were helpful. I got some good ideas that I can pass on to my teacher friends. Many of the teachers in the course were excellent role models. For information on ITV recertification courses for this summer, see the course information on pages 2023 in this ITV Update or go to www.itv.myetv.org. If more information is needed, contact Bonnie McMurray in ITV at mcmurray@scetv.org or call 1-877-885-5272.

Notes

Congratulations to Martha Alewine for receiving the 2005 Distinguished Service Award from the S.C. Association of School Librarians. This award recognizes an individual or organization for contributions to SCASL and/or school media programs throughout our state. Since this award emphasizes service at the state level, an author, illustrator, education, media specialist, business professional, or organization may be nominated. Martha is our library media services professional in the Office of Technology at SDE. She works with ITV and ETV on many projects for K-12 that would not be possible without her hard work, creativity and expertise. We are very proud of her. Well-deserved Martha! Kudos go out to Don Goforth, former Western Piedmont DELC Coordinator who is now teaching at Greenwood High School. The Greenwood High School TV/video production class taught by Don won first place in the high school division in a Public Service Announcement contest sponsored by television station WSPA News Channel 7 in Spartanburg. Their storyboard idea that won was about drinking and driving. The PSA will run on WSPA until the end of December 2005. For more information or to view the PSA, go to www.WSPA.com and click on Caring Carolinas under feature section. We miss you Don, but this is proof you are still doing great things! ITV hopes we had the chance to see you at SCASL! It is always a highlight of our spring to get the opportunity to network with our media specialist friends. And it was great this year to snap many of your smiles with Detective Bonz and his side-kick" Miss Marie! Please continue to keep in touch and share your good ideas! We appreciate all you do to assist teachers and students in using ITVs instructional television resources.
