Happy Ugadhi to All

The release of this issue has been

timed to coincide with the observation
of World health day with a CME
Programme on emerging resistance to
antibiotics old & new. We need to
follow this with concrete steps. Judicious use of
Antibiotic is the need of the hour lest; we will soon
lose the biggest break through in the history of
medicine - discovery of antibiotic. Think of practice of
medicine with no antibiotic.
We are all aware of the placebo effect of medication
and self limiting diseases. Liberal use of drugs has
increased the cost of medical care. It is in the interest
of the profession that we reduce the cost of
healthcare. You have the power to do it.

The Karnataka Private Medical Establishment Act 2007 and its
implementation by the health authorities under the guidance of
the Deputy Commissioner has raised a storm in the medical circles
here. While the intention of the Act is noble, certain requirements
under the act are demanding (and almost impossible to comply by
the ordinary medical practitioner). The requirement of toilets in
the clinic premises and minimum space requirement of clinics
may be difficult in existing clinics where consideration of existing space is of prime
importance. The IMA rightly has decided to represent the cause of the doctors
regarding these requirements. As a result of the persistent efforts by the IMA, the
requirements have been modified at least with regard to the presence of toilets in
the premises. Let all of us comply with the Private Medical Establishment Act in
good faith and let us hope that the implementation of the act serves the good
intention for which it is intended for.
This issue carries a detailed article in kannada by Dr. Annayya Kulal on the
Karnataka Private Medical Establishment Act. The quiz of this issue is on
Pulmonary Tuberculosis . Please answer the quiz and win the prizes. I would like to
congratulate Dr. Kumaraswamy for winning the prize of the quiz of the last issue. I
would like to congratulate the KSHEMA cricket team for winning the Dr. M. V.
Shetty - Dr. Chowdaiah Memorial Cricket tournament.
