his hobby horse is modeled after one I made as

a schoolgirl in 1969 as a lesson in sock knitting.
The version I made back then was knitted with cotton yarn, and the textured patterns were covered with
duplicate stitch. Happily, the stitches in this felted
version are too obscured for duplicate stitchthey
are simply worked in accent colors. Simply knit a large
sock out of wool yarn, felt it in the washing machine,
add a few details, stuff it with fiberfill, and youve got
a gift to keep your lil cowpoke happy for hours.
Finished Size About 16"
(42cm) face circumference, 14"
(35.5cm) face length, and 14"
(35.5cm) long from top of head
to base of neck, after felting and
stuffing; sock measures about
13" (34.5 cm) foot circumference,
15" (38cm) leg length from cuff to
bottom of foot, and 14" (37 cm) foot
length from back of heel to tip of toe,
before felting.

Yarn Brown Sheep Lambs Pride

Worsted (85% wool; 15% mohair;
190yd [173 m]/4 oz): #M51 winter
blue (MC), 2 skeins; #M115 oatmeal
(tan) and #M175 bronze patina
(brown), 1 skein each.
Needles Size U.S. 8 (5 mm): set of
4 or 5 double-pointed (dpn). Exact
gauge isnt important.

Notions Marker (m); tapestry

needle; about 1 yd (1 m) smooth
cotton yarn; 3 tennis balls to facilitate
felting; size H/8 (5 mm) crochet hook;
four " (2 cm) metal D-rings; two 1"
(2.5 cm) buttons for eyes; polyester
fiber stuffing.
Gauge 20 stitches and 28 rows
= 4" (10 cm) in stockinette stitch,
worked in rounds, before felting.

mitts

nspired by the tradition of Indian brides to

decorate their palms with henna patterns and
(in North India) wear a lattice of gold chains and
medallions on the back of the hand, Jaya Srikrishnan
designed these intricately patterned fingerless mitts. The
palms are worked in a traditional stranded knitting pattern
that mimics the mehndi (henna) pattern, and the back of the
hands are worked in a Bavarian twisted stitch pattern that
resembles the gold chains. These mitts are a bit challenging
to knit, but theyll last a lot longer than a henna tattoo.

finished size About 7 (7,

8)" (18 [19.5, 21.5] cm) circumference and 7 (7, 8)" (18 [19, 20.5] cm)
long. Mitts shown measure 7" (18 cm)
in circumference.
Yarn Lornas Laces Shepherd Sock
(100% superwash merino; 215 yd
[195 m]/50 g): #37ns violet (A) and
#107 red rover (B), 1 skein each.
Needles Size U.S. 1 (2.25 mm): set
of 5 double-pointed (dpn). Adjust
needle size if necessary to obtain the
correct gauge.

Notions Split-ring or removable

markers (m); cable needle (cn);
smooth cotton waste yarn to hold
thumb sts; tapestry needle.
Gauge 34 stitches = 2" (7 cm)
in charted twisted stitch pattern;
34 stitches = 3" (7.5 cm) in charted
colorwork pattern; 45 rounds = 418"
(10.5 cm) in all charted patterns.

+ Catch the stranded yarn on the

wrong side every 3 stitches or so to
prevent long floats that could catch
on fingersthis will allow the color
to peek through the front and create
the heathered effect. Change the
location of where the stranded yarn
is caught to prevent a vertical line
from forming.

Notes
+ Stretch the stitches on the right
needle when changing colors to
ensure that the floats are loose
enough to prevent puckers.
