The relentless onslaught of crime,
disease, unemployment, poverty and
other forms of pain and sufering eventu-
ally takes its toll even on the strongest
Christian. Fear of so many things begins
to develop we wont succeed in our
studies or fnd a job. We may lose our job,
our friends, even our loved ones or our
own lives.
The psalmist says God will protect
us if we make Him our shelter (Psa 91),
a promise echoed in numerous other
scriptures (Psa 27:1, Psalm 56:3-4, Deut
20:1-4).
Goliath was huge and the Israelites
were afraid of him because he was a
fghting champion, yet David asked, why
are you afraid? His faith in God negated
all fear.
God asks us the same question
today. He has the right to tell us not to be
afraid, because He understands our fears.
Matt 10:28-31 says God is the One we
should fear (respect). He has promised
never to leave or abandon us (Heb 13:5-
6), therefore we do not need to be afraid.
Pauls epistles are replete with the same
message (Rom 8:31).
What do we need to be unafraid?
Faith: Abrahams faith never wavered,
because He knew that God would keep
His promise (Rom 4:18-22). Similarly, the
centurion had absolute faith in Christs
ability to heal merely by speaking (Matt
8:5-13). We dont need to see God to
know Hes there.
Put what we learn into practice: Like
the wise man who built his house upon
a rock (Matt 7:24-27), so is the one who
listens to and applies Jesus teachings.
How many times do we need to hear
the truth before we obey it? Because
if we do we wont need to be afraid
anymore.
Focus on God: If we keep our eyes
fxed on Jesus we will never fall because
He is steadfast, like an immovable rock
(Deut 3:3-4, James 1:17).
We will all, at some stage in our life,
encounter something that we will not be
able to conquer. Then nothing else will
matter except the state of our relation-
ship with our Creator.
By hanging on to the world we hang
on to our fears. Instead, we need to let go
and let God (Isa 12).
Jesus gave everything so that we
do not have to fear. Only He can strike
all fear from our lives and help us realise
what is really important to focus on
Him.
Now is the time to make our calling
and election sure (2 Pet 1:10).

Men united in prayer
Yesterdays prayer breakfast was spiritually and emotionally
uplifting, say all the men who participated, so much so that
they decided to make it a monthly occurrence. Watch this
space for details of the next one.
