Speakers Profile
Tonio Fenech started his political career in March 1997 within the Nationalist Party, when he successfully contested the Birkirkara Local Council Election, Maltas largest locality. In October 1998 he was elected Mayor of Birkirkara, a post he retained to April 2003. He had to resign this post on being elected to Parliament through the Eight District. He was then appointed Observer to the European Parliament representing Government. In March 2004, Tonio Fenech was appointed Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Finance by Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Dr. Lawrence Gonzi.
Tonio Fenech also held a number of roles within the Nationalist Party. In April 1998 he was elected to Member of the Executive of the Nationalist Party College of Councillors. In April 1999 he was appointed Secretary General to the College of Councillors . He also held a number of political appointments including Member of the Housing Authority Board from October 1998 to April 2003, and member of the e-Malta Commission from April 2001 to April 2003.
Elvia George, Elvia is the Chief Finance Officer of the BOV Group, a post that she has occupied since May 2008, and is responsible for published group financial statements and regulatory reporting, management reporting, budgeting and forecasts, tax, cost management, custody and settlement of treasury operations. Besides lecturing in accountancy at the University of Malta, where her area of expertise is accounting for financial institutions, she is also responsible for supervising a number of students in their dissertation during their final year in the B. Accountancy (Hons) degree programme. Elvia also lectures with BPP Professional Education and is a member of the Accountancy Board. Elvia is married to Pierre and they have two children, Ryan and Naomi. Marvin Gaerty presently holds the position of Deputy Head of the Tax Compliance Unit. He was previously employed by the Inland Revenue Department as a Tax Enforcement Manager and has worked as a tax advisor, stockbroker and compliance officer with a company providing investment services. Marvin is a council member of the Malta Institute of Taxation and a lecturer for the Diploma course in taxation and the Advanced ACCA tax paper. Maria Micallef is one of the founding partners of RSM Malta and is currently the partner in charge of assurance and business advisory services in the firm. Maria specialises in assurance related work including audit of financial statements, internal audit, due diligence, reviews, compilation reports and in business advisory services including financial reporting, performance reviews, feasibility studies and business re-structuring. Maria has a B.A. Hons Accountancy degree and is a Certified Public Accountant. She is a fellow of the Malta Institute of Accountants, a member of the US Institute of Internal Auditors and a member of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. Maria is currently a Council member of the Institute of Accountants and chairs the Education Committee of the Institute. Dr. Gordon Cordina is a graduate of the University of Cambridge and the University of Malta. His main area of research interest is the sustainable growth and macroeconomic dynamics of small and micro economies. His research in this area varies from macroeconomic and growth patterns to econometric modelling to Environmental sustainability. Dr. Cordina has served as Director General of the National Statistics Office of Malta, as Economic Advisor to the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development, as Head of the Research Department of the Central Bank of Malta and as Head of the Economics Department of the University of Malta. He has been involved in a number of local and international research projects and consultancy assignments with institutions including the EU Commission, Government ministries and authorities, NGOs and private sector entities. Neville Cutajar is an accountant, auditor and business consultant. He is the Managing Partner of 3a Accountants and is currently the partner in charge of assurance and business advisory services of the firm. Neville specialises in assurance related work such as IT systems and internal audits, corporate services, business and finance advisory services including financial reporting, as well as business consultancy and coaching. Neville has a B.A. Hons Accountancy degree, an ACCA Post Graduate Diploma in International Financial Reporting and is a Certified Public Accountant and a fellow of the Malta Institute of Accountants. He sits on a number of committees of the Malta Institute of Accountants and Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Damian Xuereb has widespread experience in middle and senior management roles from the last 15 years with various organisations in the ICT and telecommunication sectors. He has served in various key roles in Government, the Private Sector as well as diplomatic postings. Throughout his career he was responsible for a number of major programmes, reforms and national strategies. In the recent years he lead IT and Telecommunications policy in the Ministry for Infrastructure, Transport and Communication. In this role he has served as the Chairman of the Community Empowerment Organisation, Board Member of European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA) and as the High Level Representative of Malta to the EU on ICT (i2010 & i2020) and eCommunications. In November 2010, Damian took up the position of Chief Strategy Officer in the Lotteries & Gaming Authority. Damian holds degrees in Business Management (Maastricht), Management Consulting (Grenoble) and is reading for PhD in Management (Malta). Ivan Grixti graduated with B.A.(Hons) Accountancy in 1991 whilst he was already already engaged on a full-time basis with the commercial arm of the University. In 1993, he commenced reading for his M.A. degree in Accounting & Finance at the University of Lancaster. Having joined the University of Malta as full-time member of the academic staff he immediately thought of gaining his Ph.D. which is currently underway at the University of Southampton. Given that his main academic area is financial accounting, the chosen area of research is fair value measurement. More recently he has been accepted as a fellow of the AIA Academic branch. He has contributed on various occasions to the official journal of the Malta Institute of Accountants and has conducted various seminars as part of the CPE programme. Vladimiro Comodini is Vice President of the ISACA MALTA CHAPTER. ISACA (www.isaca.org) is a leading global provider of knowledge, certifications, community, advocacy and education on information systems (IS) assurance and security, enterprise governance of IT, and IT-related risk and compliance. The global organisation has over 95,000 constituents in 160 countries. The ISACA Malta Chapter was officially formed in 2005 and represents more than 130 local members to promote the education of professionals for the improvement and development of their capabilities through conferences, networking and educational events, and the advocacy of the profession across organisations, regulators and other professional bodies. Vladimiro is a partner of RSM Malta and is in charge of IT Assurance and Advisory and also heads the outsourcing unit of RSM Malta. Vladimiro is a Certified Public Accountant and Auditor and a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA).
