Activity:
Brief introduction to the history of thermodynamics Describe the First Law of Thermodynamics Discuss Specific Heat Show a plot of temperature vs energy as water undergoes various phase changes; Solve some calorimetry and problems involving latent heat How much heat must be added to 3kg of H20 to raise its temperature from 20C to 80 C? From a 50lbs block of ice initially at 25F, 200 BTU of heat is removed. What is the final temperature? A glass beaker has a mass of 150g and a heat capacity of 0.2 cal/gc. After 400g of H20 is poured into the beaker, the system is allowed to reach room temp. (20 C). Next 300g of Ethyl alcohol at 70 c is poured into the beaker water-alcohol system. What will be the final temperature of the mixture? How much energy is required to change 40.0 g of ice cube from ice at -10.0 to steam at 110.0C? Evaluation: Quick quiz #2 Assignment:( Write solution detailing step by step approach in your assignment notebook and mark your final answer.)
Note: Solution to these problems will be posted in Phy-neu@yahoogroups.com soon. Group 1(Problems 1&2), Group 2(Problems 2&3), Group 3(Problems 3&4), Group 4(Problems 1&4)

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

1. A 500 g chunk of unknown metal , which has been in boiling water for several minutes, is quickly dropped into an insulating Styrofoam beaker containing 1.00 kg of water at room temperature (20C). After waiting and gently stirring for 5.00 minutes, you observed that the waters temperature has reached a constant value of 22. 0 C. Assuming that the Styrofoam absorbs a negligibly small amount of heat and that no heat was lost to the surroundings, what is the specific heat of the metal? 2. A 1.00-kg block of copper at 20.0C is dropped into a large vessel of liquid nitrogen at 77.3K. How many kilograms of nitrogen boil away by the time copper reaches 77.3K? (Note: When copper is dropped with a liquid nitrogen, the nitrogen vaporizes. ccu =387J/kgC=0.0924 cal/gC, Lv-nitrogen= 48.0 cal/g) 3. You pour 0.24 kg of warm lemonade into a cup at 33C and add 2 ice cubes (each at 0.025kg at 0C ). Assuming no heat lost to the surroundings and assume also that the lemonade has the same specific heat as water, what is the final temperature of the lemonade? 4. In an insulated vessel, 250 g of ice at 0C is added to 600 g of water at 18.0C. What is the final temperature of the system and how much ice remains when the system reaches equilibrium?
