FIRST STAGE (S-1) Engines T h e S - 1 s t a g e p o w e r p l a n t c o n s i s t s of e i g h t e n g i n e s . F o u r , i n b o a r d engines, a r e mounted in a closed s q u a r e pattern. The o t h e r f o u r , outboard e n g i n e s , a r e m o u n t e d o n t h e points of a l a r g e r s q u a r e r o t a t e d 4 5 d e g r e e s f r o m t h e i n n e r p a t t e r n . E a c h o u t b o a r d e n g i n e is d e s i g n e d t o p e r m i t a * l o d e g r e e s q u a r e g i m b a l p a t t e r n i n a n y d i r e c t i o n f r o m t h e n u l l p o s i t i o n by m e a n s of two h y d r a u l i c a c t u a t o r s .
