1. SCOPE 1. 1 Scope. This specification defines the r e q u i r e m e n t s f o r a simulated Apollo s p a c e c r a f t consisting of a launch e s c a p e s y s t e m (LES), command module (CM), s e r v i c e module (SM), a n d adapter hereinafter r e f e r r e d to as Boilerplate Number 16.
1. 1. 2 Mission. - Boilerplate Number 16 is t h e vehicle f o r the m i c r o meteoroid experiment. 1. 1. 3 Objectives. - Boilerplate Number 1 6 s h a l l be used f o r the launch vehicle qualification and micrometeoroid experiment. Other t e s t objectives w i l l b e d e t e r m i n e d by MSFC. 2.

3. 1 General. - The following paragraphs delineate the requirements for design, fabrication, assembly, and performance f o r Boilerplate Number 16. Systems and subsystems development plan philosophy is reflected in SID 62-223, Apollo P r o g r a m Plan.

3. 1. 1 Weight. - Weight, center of gravity, and moments of inertia data f o r Boilerplate Number 16 a r e listed in Table I. 3. 1. 2 Materials. and load c r i t e r i a .
3. 1.2.1 Fabrication. - Structural design concepts of Boilerplate Number 16 emphasize employment of proven manufacturing techniques and methods to the g r e a t e s t possible extent. Maximum use shall be made of developed "off-the-shelf" components fabricated by dependable manufacturers. 3. 1. 3 Design C r i t e r i a . - Design c r i t e r i a s h a l l be in accordance with rational design principles a s specified in Specification SID 63 -313. 3. 1. 3.1 Electromagnetic Interference. - Electromagnetic interference control shall be in accordance with SID Specification MC 999-0002. 3. 1 . 3 . 2 Environment. - The environmental design c r i t e r i a for Boilerplate Number 16 shall be a s specified in Specification SID 63-313. 3. 1 . 3 . 3 Checkout Provisions. - Boilerplate Number 16 s h a l l be designed with provisions for s y s t e m and integrated s y s t e m s checkout and t e s t capabilities.
3. 1 . 4 Interchangeability. - Interchangeability as defined for the Apollo P r o g r a m shall b e in accordance with Specification MIL-1-8500 and shall apply to all completely finished a s s e m b l i e s , components, and parts which s h a l l be capable of being readily installed, removed, o r replaced without alteration, misalignment, o r damage to p a r t s being installed o r to adjoining p a r t s . No fabrication operations, such a s cutting, filing, drilling, reaming, hammering, bending, prying, o r forcing, shall be r e q u i r e d f o r ins tallation.
3. 1 . 4 . 1 Interchangeability of Electronic Equipment. - Interchangeability of electronic equipment shall b e in accordance with Specification MIL-E- 5400, where applicable. Interchangeability of electronic equipment f o r the Apollo P r o g r a m shall r e q u i r e that mechanical and e l e c t r i c a l interchangeability shall exist between like a s s e m b l i e s , subassemblies, and replaceable parts be easily effected without physical o r e l e c t r i c a l modification to any p a r t of the equipment, including; cabling, wiring, and mounting and without r e s o r t i n g to selection; however , adjustment, t r i m ming, o r calibration m a y be made.

Replaceability, as defined f o r the Apollo 3. 1. 5 Replaceability. P r o g r a m , shall be in accordance with Specification MIL-1-8500 and shall apply to parts which may r e q u i r e additional work o r operations during installation. This may include such additional operations a s drilling, reaming, cutting, filing, trimming, shimming, o r o t h e r m e a n s , normally associated with installing the original a s s e m b l y into the end item. Replaceable p a r t s s h a l l b e designed to p e r m i t r e p l a c e ment under field maintenance conditions.
3. 2 Configuration. - The configuration of Boilerplate Number 16 is shown in F i g u r e 1 . F o r detailed configuration information, r e f e r to SID Drawing B14-00002-231. The S-1 Launch Vehicle is shown for information purposes only.
3. 2.1 Launch Escape System. - The LES shall consist of the following m a j o r components. Refer to NAA/S&ID Drawing B15-000002-171 for de tailed configuration.

(g) LES tower separation sequencer. 3 . 2 . 1 . 1 Nose Cone. - The LES n o s e cone shall provide the capability f o r accommodating 1, 500 pounds of lead b a l l a s t and a pitch control m o t o r mounted n o r m a l to the X axis. The pitch control m o t o r shall be 3. 2. 1. 2 Pitch Control Motor. an i n e r t solid propellant motor and shall be mounted aft of the n o s e cone. It s h a l l simulate the weight and c.g. of a n active pitch control motor. 3. 2. 1.3 Tower Jettison Motor. - The tower jettison motor shall b e a solid propellant motor 55.6 inches in length and 2 6 inches in d i a m e t e r . The motor shall have two fixed t h r u s t nozzles canted 30 degrees f r o m the m e a n m o t o r centerline. The r e s u l t a n t t h r u s t axis s h a l l b e located 2. 5 d e g r e e s plus o r minus 30 minutes f r o m the m e a n m o t o r centerline of the pitch plane. The jettison m o t o r s h a l l weigh approximately 534 pounds, which includes the i n t e r s t a g e s t r u c t u r e , s h a l l develop 33, 000 pounds of t h r u s t and shall f i r e f o r 1 . 2 seconds. The rocket m o t o r s h a l l be ignited by a pyrogen type igniter which s h a l l utilize two hotwire initiators
3 . 2 . 1 . 4 Launch Escape Motor. - The launch escape m o t o r s h a l l b e a n i n e r t solid propellant motor with a n approximate length of 183 inches and 26 inches in diameter with a g r o s s weight of approximately 4,826 pounds. 3. 2.1.5 Structural Skirt. - A s t r u c t u r a l s k i r t a s s e m b l y s h a l l b e utilized to mount the launch escape motor t o the tower. The s k i r t shall be constructed of a forged ring w i t h longerons, welded to a s h e a r skin, that s h a l l t r a n s f e r uniform load f r o m the launch escape m o t o r t o four points at the launch escape tower legs. The s t r u c t u r a l s k i r t shall be bolted to the LES tower. 3 . 2 . 1 . 6 Launch Escape Tower. - The launch e s c a p e tower s h a l l be a four-legged welded tubular alloy, truncated rectangular c r o s s sectioned pyramid, approximately 120 inches in length with a b a s e 46 inches by 50 inches. The tower s h a l l f o r m the intermediate s t r u c t u r e between the CM and the launch escape motor. A t the top of the tower, immediately below the s t r u c t u r a l s k i r t separation plane, a n aerodynamic flap shall be installed n o r m a l to the minus Z axis. At the bottom of the tower, q u i c k - r e l e a s e m e c h a n i s m s s h a l l be incorpo r a t e d t o attach the tower to the CM inner s t r u c t u r e and to the f o r w a r d heat shield. 3. 2.1.7 LES Tower Separation Sequencer. - The two LES tower separation sequencers s h a l l control, upon r e c e i p t of tower separation signal, (1) launch e s c a p e tower separation and ( 2 ) ignition of the LES jettison motor. The separation signals shall b e t r a n s m i t t e d through redundant b u s s e s , A and B.
3. 2.1.8.1 Mission Sequencer. - The mission sequencer shall automatically control LES tower separation sequencer and CM-SM s e p a r a tion. Other functions of the mission sequencer a r e undetermined a t this date.

3. 2. 1 . 8 . 2 Hotwire Initiators. The hotwire initiators contain two e l e c t r i c a l high r e s i s t a n t wires threaded into pyrotechnic c a r t r i d g e s which f i r e the igniter of the rocket motor. The initiators shall be redundant f o r i n c r e a s e d reliability. 3. 2. 1 . 8 . 3 Hotwire F,iring Units. - The hotwire firing units shall b e pyrotechnic c a r t r i d g e s which shall be detonated by c u r r e n t passing through the high r e s i s t a n t e l e c t r i c a l hotwire initiators. The pyrotechnic c a r t r i d g e s shall then f i r e the rocket motor igniters. 3. 2. 1 . 8 . 4 Pyrotechnic Batteries. - The pyrotechnic b a t t e r i e s for the LES shall be housed in the CM. E l e c t r i c a l wiring s h a l l provide the means by which c u r r e n t w i l l be c a r r i e d f r o m the b a t t e r i e s to the pyrotechnic firing units.
The umbilical s y s t e m shall contain 3. 2. 1 . 9 Umbilical System. e l e c t r i c a l wiring between the CM and LES. The umbilical s h a l l be detached by f o r c e on the lanyard type disconnect when the LES jettison motor c a u s e s CM-LES separation.
( c ) Disconnect a s s e m b l i e s .
3 . 2 . 1 . 1 1 LES Tower Separation System. - The LES tower separation s y s t e m shall consist of explosive bolts, used f o r LES tower - CM attachment, and flexible linear shaped explosive charges placed at the four attachments that s e c u r e the tower to the CM. Redundant hotwire initiators s h a l l be used to detonate the explosive bolts and flexible linear shaped explosive charges. The hotwire initiators shall b e actuated by 28 volt dc signals which s h a l l be received f r o m the redundant LES tower separation sequencer. To accomplish LES tower jettison, the tower separation sequencer w i l l simultaneously apply detonation signals to the explosive bolt initiators and the tower jettison motor f i r i n g units. The LES a s s e m b l y w i l l be r e l e a s e d and propelled c l e a r of the boilerplate t r a j e c t o r y .

3. 2. 2.1 Command Module Structure. - The CM shall be of conical design, approximately 141 inches high and 154 inches in d i a m e t e r a t the base with a n e t weight of approximately 9000 pounds. The s t r u c t u r e shall be fabricated f r o m aluminum with a skin thickness of approximately 0. 190 inches. Attach fittings s h a l l be provided a t the forward bulkhead to engage the launch escape tower. The configuration of the CM s h a l l b e in accordance with SID Drawing B16-000002-281 and s h a l l be s i m i l a r to the ultimate s p a c e c r a f t CM. A l l equipment in the CM s h a l l b e placed a s n e a r a s possible to the position to be occupied in the ultimate s p a c e c r a f t CM. The CM s t r u c t u r e s h a l l include the following: (a) Cabin housing (1) F o r w a r d Bulkhead
( 2 ) F o r w a r d crew compartment
( 3 ) A f t c r e w compartment
(b) Heat shield s t r u c t u r e ( c ) Separation s y s t e m . The CM s h e l l s h a l l b e constructed of 3. 2.2.1.1 Cabin Housing. aluminum alloy welded into two subassemblies, ( 1 ) the forward c r e w compartment and ( 2 ) the aft crew compartment. The subassemblies shall be bolted together and the aft s k i r t f r a m e s and skin s h a l l b e attached by mechanical f a s t e n e r s .

3. 2.2.1.2 F o r w a r d Bulkhead and E g r e s s Tube. - The forward bulkhead s t r u c t u r e s h a l l consist of a double skin with riveted stiffeners. The closeout skin shall be attached to stiffeners by blind f a s t e n e r s . The e g r e s s tube shall consist of a welded sheet tube of aluminum welded to the forward bulkhead. A cover plate shall be bolted to the top of the e g r e s s tube. 3. 2.2.1.3 F o r w a r d Crew Compartment. - The forward c r e w c o m partment shall c o n s i s t of multi-stiffeners welded to the outer skin. The stiffeners s h a l l consist of four main longerons attached to the launch escape tower fittings in'the forward bulkhead and terminate in the mid-ring splice joint at the aft end of the f o r w a r d section of the c r e w compartment. Several secondary longerons shall be utilized for load t r a n s f e r f r o m the forward bulkhead to the mid-ring. The r e m a i n ing stiffeners shall a s s i s t the skin in resisting airloads.
3.2.2.1.4 Aft Crew Compartment. - The aft section of the c r e w compartment shall consist of a sidewall with s t i f f e n e r s , corresponding to those of the forward section of the c r e w compartment, f r o m the mating aft section of the crew compartment mid-ring to the machined ring forging at the junction of the sidewall and the floor. 3 . 2 . 2.1.5 Apex F o r w a r d Compartment Heat Shield Cover. - The apex forward compartment heat shield cover s t r u c t u r e shall f o r m , t h e forward section of the CM s t r u c t u r e and shall consist of an aluminum alloy skin and stiffeners utilizing riveted and bolted construction. . A lightweight inner skin s h a l l b e used to i n s u r e a smooth s u r f a c e such that the forward compartment cover s h a l l not i n t e r f e r e with the parachute bags o r equipment upon ejection. The nose cone w i l l be aluminum. The CM e x t e r i o r s h a l l be provided 3. 2. 2.1.5.1 CM Insulation. with suitable c o r k insulation to protect the module f r o m aerodynamic heating during the launch phase. 3.2. 2.1.6 Access Hatch. - The main hatch shall provide a c c e s s to the C M Interior. The hatch shall be constructed of reinforced aluminum plate and s h a l l b e bolted into place. It s h a l l b e located in the CM s i d e wall over the head of the center couch position.

3. 2.2.1.6.1 A c c e s s Doors. - Access doors s h a l l b e provided in the s k i r t s t r u c t u r e f o r servicing the heat shield attach s t r u t s . F o u r openings shall be provided in the forward c r e w compartment s t r u c t u r e , approximately 90 d e g r e e s a p a r t , f o r t e l e m e t r y antennas. 3.2. 2.1.7 Mission Sequencer. - The m i s s i o n sequencer s h a l l automatically c o n t r o l LES-CM and CM-SM separation. Other possible functions of the m i s s i o n sequencer w i l l be at the discretion of the MSFC. 3. 2. 2.1.8 E l e c t r i c a l Power System (EPS). - The CM EPS s h a l l supply and distribute e l e c t r i c a l power and shall c o n s i s t of the following m a j o r components : (a) Main power b a t t e r i e s ( b ) P y r o -batteries ( c ) E l e c t r i c a l distribution system

3. 2. 2 . 1 . 1 2 CM-SM Attach System. - The CM-SM attach s y s t e m shall utilize positive tension ties through the t h r e e SM compression pads. T h e t h r e e preloaded tension s t r a p s s h a l l b e s e c u r e d to the CM i n n e r s t r u c t u r e and the SM a t the upper beam.

3 . 2 . 2 . 1 . 1 3 CM-SM Separation. - Capability f o r CM-SM separation is not provided f o r Boilerplate Number 16. 3. 2. 3 S e r v i c e Module. - The SM s h a l l be a cylinder approximately 124 inches in length and 1 5 4 inches in d i a m e t e r . The s t r u c t u r e s h a l l b e aluminum semi-monocoque construction consisting of skin, longerons , and frames. 3. 2.3.1 SM Reaction Control System (RCS). - The SM RCS engines s h a l l b e installed at station 325. The RCS quad packages shall b e dummy m o t o r s simulating the s i z e , weight, shape, location, and aerodynamic c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s of the ultimate s p a c e c r a f t RGS. 3. 2. 3 . 2 SM I n s e r t . - The SM i n s e r t s h a l l be located between the a d a p t e r and SM. The i n s e r t shall b e a n aluminum cylinder of semimonocoque construction approximately 5 2 inches in length and 1 5 4 inches d i a m e t e r . 3. 2. 3 . 3 Adapter. - The adapter s h a l l b e a n aluminum cylinder of s e m i -monocoque construction approximately 9 2 inches in length and 154 inches d i a m e t e r . It s h a l l b e located between the SM i n s e r t and t h e S-IV stage of the S-1 Launch Vehicle. 3. 2. 3 . 4 SM Purging. GSE G N purging lines. 2

This bulkhead shall b e a n air conditioning b a r r i e r t o isolate the S-IV cooling s y s t e m f r o m the adapter cavity. 3. 2 . 4 Launch Vehicle. - The launch vehicle for Boilerplate Number 16 w i l l be the Saturn I Block I1 configuration. 3. 3 P e r f o r m a n c e . - The performance of Boilerplate Number 16 w i l l be outlined by the MSFC. 3. 3. 1 T r a j e c t o r y P a r a m e t e r s . 3. 3. 2 Flight Plan.

4 QUALITY ASSURANCE .
4.1 G e n e r a l Quality Assurance Provisions. - The principal contractor (S&ID) s h a l l be responsible f o r the performance of a l l inspection r e q u i r e ments a s specified herein. Except a s othenvise specified, the principal contractor m a y utilize his own or any other inspection facilities and s e r v i c e s acceptable to the NASA. Inspection r e c o r d s of the examinations and t e s t s s h a l l be kept complete and available to the NASA a s specified in the contract.
4 2 P r i n c i p a l C o n t r a c t o r ' s Quality Assurance P r o g r a m . - The principal . contractor shall establish a quality a s s u r a n c e p r o g r a m in accordance with the requirements of paragraph 6 of Exhibit I of the contract. Inspections and t e s t s to determine conformance of Boilerplate Number 16 to c o n t r a c t and specification requirements shall be conducted p r i o r to submission of the a r t i c l e to the NASA for acceptance.
The principal c o n t r a c t o r shall a c t a s a t e s t h i s t o r i a n and accumulate applicable data on s p a c e c r a f t t e s t s , plans, and performance f r o m preparation to delivery. The data shall be used in qualitative and quantitive a s s e s s m e n t s of reliability and performance of each s y s t e m , and of the ultimate spacecraft. This data, together with other appropriate data, such a s acceptance data, shall be integrated with that accumulated f r o m p r i o r t e s t s to f o r m a s s e s s m e n t s . Thus, a probability of s u c c e s s m a y be provided f o r any given phase. The reliability data m a y a l s o be compared with p r o g r a m objectives in o r d e r to a s s u r e that these have been attained.
4. 2. 1 Reliability Data.
4 3 Examination. .
Each a s s e m b l y and a l l m a j o r components submitted f o r acceptance s h a l l be subjected to a visual examination to determine conformance to m a t e r i a l s , design, construction, dimensions , color and finish, product marking, and workmanship.
4 3. 1 Components. .
The principal contractor s h a l l a s c e r t a i n that, p r i o r to a s s embly, all parts , components , a s s emblies , and s ys tems procured under s e p a r a t e specifications o r drawings have been inspected, t e s t e d , and accepted in accordance with t h e i r respective specifications o r drawings.
4.4 Tests. E a c h assembly, m a j o r component, and system submitted f o r acceptance s h a l l be subject to performance t e s t s a s specified in SID 62-109.
