About Cancer Buddies

Support Cancer Buddies in their endeavour to make a difference. Select a sponsorship package for their fundraising golf day on 26 October 2011 at the Houghton Golf Club.
People Living With Cancer (PLWC) was established in 2001 by Carl Liebenberg and Linda Greeff, both of whom are cancer survivors. PLWC offers a free support network where cancer patients can interact with and receive practical advice and support from cancer survivors who have a similar profile, disease and treatment protocol. In South Africa today, Cancer is experienced by in 1 in 4 South Africans. It disrupts lives and causes immense suffering for individual and families. There are currently 10 million people diagnosed with cancer world-wide with 6 million deaths yearly. The current lack of cancer awareness and effective support services in South Africa is partially responsible for the late diagnoses of cancer across the South African population. The organisation has set up a Cancer Buddies project across South Africa aimed at enhancing and growing psychosocial support for cancer patients by reaching them more effectively via different methods of support and communication tools. This includes a website, the services of a trained oncology social worker who manages support groups, individual support, one-one peer support (Cancer Buddies) and telephone counseling.

There are branches in 4 provinces:

Mpumalanga - Nelspriut Gauteng - North Johannesburg & Pretoria Eastern Cape - Port Elizabeth Western Cape - Cape Town

There is however a huge need to roll-out the Cancer Buddies support structures in previously disadvantaged communities in the Gauteng region. Currently there is no organisation that supports patients from the initial trauma of diagnosis, through treatment and beyond to survivorship. The PLWC model of psychosocial support through Cancer Buddies is the first of its kind in our country to provide this unique platform for holistic support and encouragement into survivorship. In order to ensure that more people in South Africa have access to this service and to roll-out the Cancer Buddies project in Soweto, PLWC is hosting a fundraising Golf day on 26th October 2011. To assist in this golf-day being a success and to raise the required amount of funds for the Soweto project, we have secured the attendance of some high profile sportsmen and individuals in the entertainment industry, including musicians who will host a fourball. Up for auction will be a memorabilia signed by the 3 Nobel Peace prize winners of South Africa who are all cancer survivors. Your commitment to the cause and the support will be greatly appreciated in the form of you either taking up a sponsorship package or purchasing a four-ball.
