Company Profile
Mimulus Biological Consultants has been in business since 1996. We specialize in the
identification of ecosystems and habitats, both in the field and through the interpretation of aerial
photographs. Employed here are ecologists, skilled in recognizing and measuring the
complexities of natural systems. Additionally, we employ professional educators, able to work
with and train various skill levels and age groups. This combination enables Mimulus to provide
a wide range of services.

Consultants working for Mimulus are specialists in plant identification and measurement,
wildlife detection, identification and inventory, habitat assessment, and data analysis. We have
worked throughout British Columbia, as well as the Yukon and Northwest Territories.
Challenging ecosystems, such as estuaries, wetlands, and riparian sites, are among the many
systems in which the company has completed assessments. Other services that we can provide
are analyses of vegetation; including site profiles, plant inventories, impact assessments, habitat
and population dynamics; productivity estimates, riparian area assessments, aerial photograph
interpretation, statistical analyses, GPS data collection, and GIS mapping using Ozi Explorer and
ArcGIS, and water quality testing. Mimulus has also had experience in restoring natural
systems, monitoring revegetation projects, and conducting species at risk assessments. Mimulus
consultants instruct courses at North Island College and Vancouver Island University, and
provide training in the Vegetation Resources Inventory methodology. Mimulus also conducts
educational programs such as Streamkeepers (DFO), Wetlandkeepers and the Wetlands Institute
(BCWF).
We have been involved in several large inventories and ecological assessments, most involving
the identification of plant and wildlife species, both native and introduced. The resulting reports
have been used for monitoring and frequently provide management recommendations and
guidance to clients.
In the 1990s, Mimulus inventoried over 1000 Sensitive Ecosystem Inventory (SEI) polygons
and Canadian Wildlife Service Wetlands Inventory polygons on Vancouver Island, as well as
participated in the updated assessments with 3D orthophoto analysis. We have worked with the
Vegetation Resources Inventory (VRI) since 1996, putting in operational Ecology plots on the
coast and in the interior, as well as similar inventory plots (such as SIBEC). We have trained
and mentored crews throughout the province. Mimulus has been hired to audit ecology crews
(quality assurance) for the VRI/CMI and National Forest Inventory (NFI) since 1996. In 2008,
we were hired to co-author the ecology re-measurement procedures manual for the National
Forest Inventory (NFI) and updated the NFI ecology procedures manual, field forms, training
materials, and data dictionary. Mimulus has also completed ecological assessments for several
large landowners and developers on Vancouver Island, which included land use guidelines,
wildlife management, and weed management options.
