S C I E N T I F I C PA P E R C O M P E T I T I O N Submission is made under the name of the AMSA chapter. Only one submission is allowed for each chapter. THEME: Infectious Diseases emerging threats in the region TARGET: Medical students, medical professionals, policy makers OBJECTIVES: 1. 2. 3. 4. GUIDELINES: 1. Provide a brief introduction on the disease(s) identified in the scientific paper, the introduction should include: a. Pathological basis of the disease(s) b. Prevalence of the disease(s) The team may then choose to either: a. Use clinical-based research (i.e. randomized controlled trials, systemic reviews, cohort studies etc) and/or scientific models of inquiry, to give a detailed overview that includes but may not be limited to ANY of the following: i. Prevalence of infectious disease in country/region ii. Pathological basis of infectious disease iii. Vectors of transmission of infectious disease iv. Efficacy and/or non-efficacy and/or adverse of current pharmacological treatment of infectious disease b. OR provide examples of preventive measures or policies implemented by the government or relevant health organizations (e.g. vaccinations) against the disease(s). i. For the examples mentioned, include any evidence-based clinical research (i.e. systematic reviews, randomized-controlled trails, cohort studies) that suggests either 1) effectiveness, 2) ineffectiveness or 3) adverse effects. It can be drawn from literature reviews of previous studies or new unpublished studies. Based on evidence-based clinical research that suggests effectiveness, propose a preventive measure to control further spread of the disease(s) and outline the involvement of medical students in aforementioned proposed preventive measure. Increase awareness of infectious diseases and the threat that they pose worldwide. Understand the development and spread of an epidemic and the underlying factors that affect its outcome. Recognise the role of the government, community, medical profession and individual in the prevention and management of epidemics. Provide learning for other countries regarding infectious diseases (various diseases in the region, their epidemiology and management at a local level).
