And all our engines are entirely shaped by the BMW EfcientDynamics philosophy which
aims at generating more power from less fuel.
This goal is achieved in a number of ways: in induction engines, the combustion chamber
is only partially lled with the fuel/air mix, particularly in the partial load range, so the engine
runs even more efciently. Engines featuring High Precision Injection have injectors that are
positioned right next to the spark plugs and inject tiny amounts of petrol into the combustion
chamber up to times in just a fraction of a second. This ultra-precise dosage ensures
optimal combustion, leading to maximum efciency and low emission values. Constant
revisions and innovations mean that these engines will always lead where others follow
in power, in efciency, and in economy.
Our very latest contender is BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, which, in the latest six-
cylinder in-line petrol engines combines systems such as a TwinScroll turbocharger,
Valvetronic fully variable valve control and High Precision Injection, again resulting in an
impressive combination of increased power and reduced fuel consumption.

the spark, in contrast to conventional injection (shown left). The rest of the combustion chamber
is lled primarily with air. The result is tangible: this lean combustion ensures signicantly

BMW diesel engines are a pinnacle of engineering achievement. Extremely economical,
extremely powerful and extremely smooth, they are a particularly impressive embodiment of
the BMW EfcientDynamics philosophy, featuring on the one hand aluminium lightweight
construction as standard, and on the other uniting a host of innovative technologies. The latest
generation common rail injection is just one example. Generating up to bar whatever the
engine speed or amount of fuel being injected, the high injection pressure guarantees optimum
and efcient carburetion and combustion. This ultimately means impressively reduced
consumption right alongside BMWs characteristic engine torque, delivering a perceptible
boost to the overall driving experience.
Additionally, multiple pre-injections of minimal amounts of fuel help ensure that the engines run
exceptionally quietly and smoothly. With a particle lter as standard, most BMWdiesel engines
already meet EU emission standards.

AHEAD OF FUTURE ENVIRONMENTAL
REGULATIONS.
BMWengineers not only take responsibility, they are driven by their dedication. For example in the
issue of reducing pollutants, their research has resulted in the development of BMWBluePerformance
technology for new diesel engines. This feature reduces the nitric oxides that every diesel engine
generates to a minimum.
In an additional storage catalytic convertor coated in precious metals including platinum and
palladium, a catalysis is triggered to store pollutants in the system. By running the engine on a
higher proportion of fuel for a short time the nitric oxides can be completely combusted. This means
that the EU emissions standard is already met in several BMWmodels even though its only due
to come into force in .*

Auto Start/Stop function.
THE FINE ART OF
SWITCHING OFF.
When the engine is switched off it neither consumes fuel nor produces emissions. A simple
principle that is at the heart of the Auto Start/Stop function, whereby the engine shuts itself
down as soon as the vehicle comes to a standstill and the driver dips the clutch and shifts into
neutral for example at trafc lights or in a jam. The engine restarts as soon as pressure is
reapplied to the clutch.
Especially in urban driving the Auto Start/Stop function makes use of even the briefest pauses to
save fuel. It is tted in almost all BMWfour-cylinder engines with six-speed manual transmissions.

Air vent control.

Many athletes nowadays wear skin-tight gear that is designed to reduce drag. And for cars
too, aerodynamics are key to ensuring the vehicles motion is as energy efcient as possible.
Aerodynamic drag can be reduced by the overall shape of the car but also by features such as
the new air vent control, found in many BMW models, which reduces aerodynamic drag
especially at high speeds by closing the air vents in front of the radiator. The function is activated
in response to the driving situation and the temperature of the engine. The engine management
systemcontinuously monitors whether the engine requires cooling air, and opens or closes
the vents accordingly. This has two gratifying effects: a shorter engine warm-up phase and
reduced fuel consumption.

The amount of weight to be moved corresponds directly to the amount of energy required to
move it. Ever since the s BMW has incorporated this insight into vehicle construction,
continually rening it. One question that perpetually confronts our engineers is: where exactly
would a reduction in weight make sense and where not? The answer lies in intelligent
lightweight construction. This includes targeted use of ultra-light materials such as aluminium
and magnesium such as in the chassis, or the crankcase of the newsix-cylinder in-line engines.

Every time you brake, you release kinetic energy energy which for a long time was not
capitalised upon by vehicle design. Brake Energy Regeneration uses this previously wasted
potential to reclaimelectricity fromthe momentumproduced when the driver takes their foot
off the accelerator or brakes. This power is then used to recharge the battery. This intelligent
energy management systemfrees up the generator and makes permanent running of the
alternator redundant. As a result, fuel consumption is reduced and performance increased

One way to achieve a reduction in fuel
consumption and consequently to lower
emissions is hybrid technology. But its
only when this technology is embodied in
a BMW that it also means more driving
pleasure.
In engine development a hybrid is the
combination of two different drive concepts:
usually a combustion engine and an electric
motor. BMWs own hybrid technology, called
BMWActiveHybrid, adds to this combination
another vital element: sheer driving pleasure.
Attuned precisely to every model, each vehicle
concept is tted with the best suited hybrid
components fromour Best of Hybrid
modular system.
In the new BMWActiveHybrid X BMWhas
combined the worlds rst Sports Activity
Coup with fully hybrid technology, promising
an exceptional driving experience with greatly
increased efciency at the same time. It all
centres on a two-mode active transmission
that can intelligently vary the interaction of the
two electric motors and the combustion
engine to suit the vehicles changing speed
and load. The new BMW X ActiveHybrid
always makes best use of the two options at
hand: it can be operated either on %
electric power, or only with power fromthe
combustion engine, or using a combination
of the two drive forms. Consumption and
emissions are thus reduced by up to %

THE ATMOSPHERE IS ELECTRIC.
The goal of % emission-free mobility is
what motivates BMWengineers to such high-
level achievements with such impressive
results. The fully electric BMWConcept
ActiveE is to be BMWs rst ever emission-free
test vehicle, and will be put through its paces
in a series of extensive trials frommid-.
It is based on the BMW Series Coup, but
has neither a fuel tank nor an exhaust pipe.
Instead, the core of the BMWConcept ActiveE
is an electric motor specially developed by

What is project i? We are currently developing
a vehicle to meet the specic challenges of the
rapidly growing megacities. The product itself,
however, is only one aspect of our work. The
project leaves scope for blue-sky thinking to plan
new product processes, sales models, vehicle
concepts and mobility packages.
What details about the vehicle are known? An
electric motor is a great advantage in a city
car: plenty of energy can be regenerated from
braking, and the average distances driven are
short. Customers experiences with the MINI E
showthat an everyday range of kmis perceived
as perfectly adequate. And a city-based vehicle
denitely needs four seats and a decent-sized
luggage compartment. Additionally, a BMWGroup
vehicle has to be top-of-the-range in every aspect:
in the driving experience, in quality, in safety and
in networking.
What exactly is meant by networking? A car
that is to be used mainly in cities should ideally
feature trafc guidance systems and be able to
communicate with the infrastructure. Its intelligent
navigation systemwill as a matter of course not only
locate the nearest available charging station but will
also be able to reserve it for your estimated time of
arrival. The driver can check the current battery level
or the location of the nearest charging station via
mobile phone. And it will be possible to activate the
heating and air conditioning systems the same way.
With our BMWConcept ActiveE concept car we
have already shown what this kind of smartphone
application could look like.
What kind of EfcientDynamics does
project i involve? EfcientDynamics
demonstrates BMWs capacity to meet the
challenges of the future. Its our proof that
reduced consumption does not have to mean a
less enjoyable driving experience and the same
applies to project i.
New developments in EfcientDynamics are being
worked on all the time, and we will of course adopt
all its suitable technologies in our products too.
Youre driving along, enjoying classic BMW
dynamism and the only thing coming out
the exhaust is steam. In , a whole new
element was added to on-road dynamism. After
decades of intensive research, BMWpresented
the worlds rst every-day luxury saloon powered
by water: the BMWHydrogen . It is built around
a combustion engine that can switch on demand
between petrol mode and hydrogen power.
The hydrogen tank is another typical example
of ne BMWengineering. Designed with
maximumsafety in mind, it can withstand
extreme strain and stores the liquid hydrogen
at -C.

Lightweight construction is important in
electric vehicles because of the heavy
batteries. What is project is approach to the
issue? One solution is carbon bre-reinforced
polymer (CRP) a high-tech material mostly used
till now in motor racing and in aviation. We are
collaborating with a partner company to develop
special CRP products for the automotive
industry.
Do customers expect BMW-level driving
characteristics even in an urban electric
vehicle? We know that customers appreciate
good driving dynamics and plenty of agility even
in city driving. And these characteristics are part
of the BMWbrand promise. Customers even rate
the quiet acceleration possible with our electric
motor as particularly impressive.
Sustainability is a key consideration in
project i. What aspects are you focussing on?
We are examining the issue of sustainability at
every single stage: the supplier chain, production,
transport, materials, recycling, sales and logistics.
We have the opportunity to recongure the entire
lifecycle of the vehicle. For example, howto structure
the manufacturing process with an eye to the
efcient use of energy at every stage, and how to
avoid particularly energy-intensive processes.
Can you make any predictions about the
price? We do of course have some idea of
what a car like this can cost, but its unrealistic
to determine a price at this stage. The most
expensive component is the battery and its
energy management. And here were just starting
out with new technologies where we need to
calculate their prices according to the appropriate
quantities.
