BMW EFFICIENT DYNAMICS.
JOY POWERED BY TOMORROWS TECHNOLOGIES
TODAY AS STANDARD.
BMW EfficientDynamics
Less emissions. More driving pleasure.
BMW EfcientDynamics.
JOY IS
OUR PROMISE.
At BMW, everything we do day in, day out is geared towards maintaining and enhancing your driving experience. We use innovative light-weight
materials to combat the effects of gravitational force, and at the same time were constantly working to improve our engines so that they get the
maximumout of every drop of fuel. But we arent satisfied with just using less energy. Weve gone on to simply generating energy for ourselves.
With alternative drive concepts including hybrid, all-electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles we are coming ever-closer to achieving
%emission-free mobility. Every one of our models incorporates creative innovations fromBMWEfficientDynamics such as the BMWd
EfficientDynamics Edition, which brings the award-winning technology packages outstanding potential for efficiency and dynamism onto
the road. And because our ultimate aim is to make driving pure pleasure, we ensure you can enjoy every trip you take in your BMW with
a clearer conscience than ever. And thats a promise.

ELECTRIFYING
TIMES.
What is project i? We are currently developing
a vehicle to meet the specic challenges of the
rapidly growing megacities. The product itself,
however, is only one aspect of our work. The
project leaves scope for blue-sky thinking to plan
new product processes, sales models, vehicle
concepts and mobility packages.
What details about the vehicle are known? An
electric motor is a great advantage in a city
car: plenty of energy can be regenerated from
braking, and the average distances driven are
short. Customers experiences with the MINI E
showthat an everyday range of kmis perceived
as perfectly adequate. And a city-based vehicle
denitely needs four seats and a decent-sized
luggage compartment. Additionally, a BMWGroup
vehicle has to be top-of-the-range in every aspect:
in the driving experience, in quality, in safety and
in networking.
What exactly is meant by networking? A car
that is to be used mainly in cities should ideally
feature trafc guidance systems and be able to
communicate with the infrastructure. Its intelligent
navigation systemwill as a matter of course not only
locate the nearest available charging station but will
also be able to reserve it for your estimated time of
arrival. The driver can check the current battery level
or the location of the nearest charging station via
mobile phone. And it will be possible to activate the
heating and air conditioning systems the same way.
With our BMWConcept ActiveE concept car we
have already shown what this kind of smartphone
application could look like.
What kind of EfcientDynamics does
project i involve? EfcientDynamics
demonstrates BMWs capacity to meet the
challenges of the future. Its our proof that
reduced consumption does not have to mean a
less enjoyable driving experience and the same
applies to project i.
New developments in EfcientDynamics are being
worked on all the time, and we will of course adopt
all its suitable technologies in our products too.
Youre driving along, enjoying classic BMW
dynamism and the only thing coming out
the exhaust is steam. In , a whole new
element was added to on-road dynamism. After
decades of intensive research, BMWpresented
the worlds rst every-day luxury saloon powered
by water: the BMWHydrogen . It is built around
a combustion engine that can switch on demand
between petrol mode and hydrogen power.
The hydrogen tank is another typical example
of ne BMWengineering. Designed with
maximumsafety in mind, it can withstand
extreme strain and stores the liquid hydrogen
at -C.

Are you researching any more newvehicle
concepts? BMWmanufactures motorbikes as well
as cars our highly innovative city scooter BMWC
is already out and about. So well also be looking into
similar concepts as part of project i.
Lightweight construction is important in
electric vehicles because of the heavy
batteries. What is project is approach to the
issue? One solution is carbon bre-reinforced
polymer (CRP) a high-tech material mostly used
till now in motor racing and in aviation. We are
collaborating with a partner company to develop
special CRP products for the automotive
industry.
Do customers expect BMW-level driving
characteristics even in an urban electric
vehicle? We know that customers appreciate
good driving dynamics and plenty of agility even
in city driving. And these characteristics are part
of the BMWbrand promise. Customers even rate
the quiet acceleration possible with our electric
motor as particularly impressive.
Sustainability is a key consideration in
project i. What aspects are you focussing on?
We are examining the issue of sustainability at
every single stage: the supplier chain, production,
transport, materials, recycling, sales and logistics.
We have the opportunity to recongure the entire
lifecycle of the vehicle. For example, howto structure
the manufacturing process with an eye to the
efcient use of energy at every stage, and how to
avoid particularly energy-intensive processes.
Can you make any predictions about the
price? We do of course have some idea of
what a car like this can cost, but its unrealistic
to determine a price at this stage. The most
expensive component is the battery and its
energy management. And here were just starting
out with new technologies where we need to
calculate their prices according to the appropriate
quantities.

The models illustrated in this brochure show the specications of vehicles produced by BMW AG for
the German market. In part, they include optional equipment and accessories not tted as standard.
According to the specific requirements of the markets of other European Union member states,
alterations in models, standard and optional equipment, as described in this brochure, may occur. For more
precise information about country-specic vehicle versions, please contact your local BMW partner.
