Until a year ago, Dominquita Corizs life was
punctuated by turmoil. She had suffered the loss of
a close family member, was losing the fight against
diabetes and admits, I was depressed real bad.
Medications shaped her daily life. In the decades that
followed her diabetes diagnosis, the disease progressed
until she was prescribed as many as seven medications
simultaneously, plus insulin, just to keep the diabetes in
check. Her body was in so much pain that she couldnt
travel the short distance to pick up the pills she needed to
survive.
But that was a different Dominquita Coriz.
About a year ago, the Kewa Pueblo woman was
referred to Love Your Heart, the tribes cardiovascular
health program for people with diabetes. Health
administrators helped her skim the unhealthy stuff from
her diet and encouraged regular exercise. She said it was
a drastic change from her routine of years.
Before, I ate anything, whatever I wanted. I liked
the fried things fried potatoes, fried meat. Now its the
green stuff, Coriz said.
NATALIE GUILLN
Jackie Bird (center) joins more than 40 women in a Zumba class at Kewa Pueblo. As part of an initiative to help curb Type 2 diabetes among its population,
Kewa Pueblo (formerly Santo Domingo) has started Zumba classes. Bird was born and raised on Kewa Pueblo and has lived there all her life.
Changing direction
Exercise, diet fixes and determination can turn diabetes diagnosis around
HE ALT H & WE L L NE S S 9
But the results have been just as drastic as the lifestyle
changes. Its clear from the way she describes her days
now, one year after she implemented diet and exercise
changes to manage her diabetes.
She uses words such as flexibility and control to
describe her life. She walks, bikes and uses the treadmill.
She can pick up her own diabetes medications.
Now in her 50s, Coriz cant remember a time when she
felt more optimistic about her health and her diabetes.
Im down to three medications and insulin now, she
said. And Im not scared of the doctor.
The severity
Health administrators at Kewa Pueblo have seen their
share of tribe members develop Type 2 diabetes. And not
all of them are success stories like Coriz.
Diabetes is so pervasive that the pueblo has acquired
its own dialysis center to help treat sufferers. Kewa also
recently purchased a hyperbaric chamber, which is used
to help prevent amputations a too-routine side effect
for many with advanced-stage diabetes.

LUIS SNCHEZ SATURNO
Nationwide, about 7.8 percent of Americans have been
diagnosed with diabetes, according to 2007 numbers
from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
That number is about 7.5 percent in New Mexico and
4.8 percent in Santa Fe County, according to the states
10 HE ALT H & WE L L NE S S
Department of Health. Diabetes was the sixth-leading
cause of death in New Mexico in 2009.
But diabetes hits Native Americans and Alaska
Natives especially hard particularly Type 2. Their
rate of diagnosed diabetes hovers around 16.3 percent
making them 2.2 times more likely than non-Hispanic
whites to have the condition. An additional 30 percent
have pre-diabetes.
Department of Health statistics show diagnoses of
diabetes among Native Americans aged 20-29 jumped
58 percent from 1990 to 1998. And Kewa Pueblo isnt
immune to this trend.
According to Jan Atencio, director of Kewas health
programs, diabetes affects some 15 percent of its 4,913
people. Further, she believes that number could be about
a percent higher if she factors in people who have not
been diagnosed or who receive treatment outside of
Indian Health Service. The number of those diagnosed has
increased by 3.5 percent since 2006.
Im concerned at how the rate has increased. To other
people it might not be a lot, but to us, its huge. Its a huge
climb in the wrong direction, Atencio said.
In such a community-based culture, one family
member with diabetes has a negative effect on the entire
group, she said.
Ray Tafoya, tribal programs administrator, said that
dietary restrictions of those with diabetes put a strain on
cultural activities, especially those that center on food.
Its hard to see that some of our elders or our younger
generation cant take part in our cultural activities
because of diabetes. Its sad to see it taken away from
them, he said.
Kewa has numerous programs to help those with
diabetes and to prevent others from developing it. Theres
the cardiovascular initiative that helped Coriz, and a
strong network of outreach workers who make house
visits to monitor the ill. And the pueblo recently partnered
with Johns Hopkins University to develop a community
garden meant to reintroduce traditional farming and diet
practices to the younger generation.
Tafoya and Atencio see their community becoming
more enthusiastic about the programs. Zumba classes are
more crowded. The pueblos track program energizes the
youth. And more seniors are attending support groups.
But despite the outreach and the progress, Tafoya and
Atencio are realistic about the diabetes epidemic at Kewa.
Theres a lot of misconception out there that being in
a rural setting, were not affected by Western culture,
Tafoya said. We do have regular access to those
unhealthy foods and unhealthy lifestyles that contribute to
diabetes running rampant here on the reservation.
New diets
About 40 miles from Kewa, back in Santa Fe, Native
chef Lois Ellen Frank is leading efforts to reclaim a truly
traditional Native American diet. That reclamation is
crucial because diabetes was not a problem in Native
American communities when diets were still plant-based,
said Frank, who teaches plant-based Native American
cooking classes and is completing her Ph.D. in Native
foods.
Frank says the rising number of Native Americans with
diabetes can be attributed to a colliding of cultures that
brought tribes a new diet filled with foods that can trigger
diabetes when eaten often.
When the Spanish invaded, for example, they brought
pork, beef, sheep and wheat, Frank said. Suddenly meat
and yeast breads were a part of the Native diet.
Then came the commodity-food period. According to
Frank, when tribes such as the Navajos were forcibly
removed from their land, they were given army rations
things such as yellow cheese, lard and flour. Given
those ingredients to survive, Native Americans showed
great creativity by adapting their diets, the chef said. But
the adaptations werent healthy.
They took ingredients they were familiar with and
some they werent familiar with and made all these
things, Frank said. Fry bread became the only thing they
had to eat. Its creative, but its a sometimes food.
Growing up in the Midwest, Donna Hall remembers
the commodity diet well. Her parents were the second
generation to live with those foods the flours, the
sugars, the canned meats and they became the staples
of her diet.
JANE PHILLIPS
A hyperbaric chamber such as this has been opened at Kewa Pueblo to treat
complications of diabetes.
HE ALT H & WE L L NE S S 11
Coming into my adult life, I started teaching my kids that,
because thats all I knew, said Hall, who moved to Santa
Fe in summer 2009 to attend the Institute of American
Indian Arts.
A few short months ago, Hall and her children were
eating a diet that she describes as something fried,
something salty, something sugary. Among them, they
went through two bags of chips per day, 6-10 pounds of
meat per week and large quantities of soda. And then
there were the meat-and-cheese loaded Indian tacos,
eaten twice each week.
When Hall saw a sign for the Food for Life Healthy
Native America Cooking Program, the programs
emphasis on a Native diet appealed to her. Although Hall
doesnt have diabetes, she saw her father develop Type 2
and wanted to help her children avoid the disease.
During the classes, she learned to adapt fry bread and
Indian taco recipes into healthier, plant-based meals. She
said the change was difficult at first. We still love our
meat and cheese, she said. But the family stuck with it.
They now are growing their own sprouts and eating
meals full of veggies and rice, thanks to cooking
demonstrations led by Frank, local instructor Rita Condon
and Dr. Neal Barnard, who revolutionized the plant-based
diet for those with diabetes.
Hall has seen improvements in her arthritis and is
experiencing less pain from her non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
And Ashley, her 11-year-old daughter, couldnt be
happier.
I thought we should be eating more healthy, she said.
And now I have more energy at school.
Caroline Trapp a longtime nurse and director
of diabetes education for the nonprofit Physicians
Committee for Responsible Medicine, which sponsored
the cooking classes said the plant-based diet the
participants learn is an effective way to prevent or
manage diabetes.
She has seen patients with Type 2 diabetes cut down
medications after switching to a diet based on plants
rather than meat. Ive seen a really effective treatment
(for diabetes) related to lifestyle. It doesnt come in a
bottle and it doesnt have to be injected. Its something we
can do for ourselves, Trapp said.
For Frank, the switch to plant-based foods is about
more than just health. She says its also a way for Native
Americans to reclaim their culture and their cuisine.
As you revitalize food, you revitalize everything thats
attached to it the songs that go with planting, the
prayers, the agricultural techniques, she said. (The
younger generation) wants to know.
Frank partners with Chef Walter Whitewater to develop
Native recipes and educational programs. For more

diabetes cooking classes, e-mail Frank at loisphotos@

STORY & PHOTOS BY LOI S ELLEN FRANK
This recipe is one of my favorite chile bean recipes and
was originally made for the Begay family in Pion, Ariz.,
for their family gatherings and ceremonies. I usually cook
it in a large cast-iron pot with a handle that was passed
down to me by my mother. The taste from the cast iron
makes this chile bean stew even more delicious. This
recipe is so great because you can make one recipe to
feed 6 to 8 people or you can add to it and make enough
to feed 60 to 600 people. It is a favorite at all family
and ceremonial gatherings. This recipe goes great with
tortillas, or homemade no-fry bread. It makes a hearty
meal by itself or a side to any feast.
Vegan Pion Chile Beans
(Serves 8 to 12)
1 large yellow onion, chopped
1 green bell pepper, seeded and chopped
Olive oil cooking spray to coat cast iron pot
2 cups chopped fresh Roma tomatoes or
(1) 28-ounce can whole peeled tomatoes with basil
2 1/2 cups cooked dark red kidney beans
2 1/2 cups cooked pinto beans
2 cups cooked corn kernels (fresh, frozen or canned)
3 tablespoons dried red mild chile powder
1 teaspoon salt
Heat the cast iron or soup pot over medium-high heat.
Add onions, saut for two minutes until translucent, then
add green bell peppers and saut another two minutes.
Cut each of the whole tomatoes from the can into
eight pieces (a large dice) and add them to the onions
and green bell peppers. Cook for another two minutes,
stirring constantly. Add the kidney beans, pinto beans
and the cooked corn and stir well. Bring the chile beans
to a boil, and then reduce heat to low. Stir in the dried red
chile powder and salt. Let simmer for 20 minutes, stirring
occasionally to prevent burning. Serve hot with no-fry
bread, or homemade corn or flour tortillas.

This recipe makes Indian tortilla breads that can be cooked

on a open flame grill or open flame instead of fried.
Indian No-Fry Bread
or Tortilla Bread
(Makes 12 no-fry or grilled tortilla breads)
4 cups organic unbleached or whole-wheat flour
2 tablespoons baking powder
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1-1/2 cups warm water
In a medium-size mixing bowl combine flour, baking
powder and kosher salt. Gradually stir in the water until
the dough becomes soft and pliable without sticking to
the bowl.
Knead the dough on a lightly floured cutting board or
surface for four minutes, folding the outer edges of the
dough towards the center.
Return the dough to the bowl, cover with plastic wrap,
and let rest for at least 30 minutes to allow it to rise.
Shape the dough into small-sized balls and roll out
using a rolling pin or with your hands to 1/4-inch width
on a lightly floured surface. I always use my hands, which
makes for slightly uneven round breads, but everyone
will know they were hand-made and I think it gives each
bread a little more character. Stretch or roll the dough out

so that it is approximately 8-to-10 inches in diameter.
Heat a cast iron skillet or open flame grill until very hot.
Place your shaped dough circle onto the hot pan or open
flame grill, and let it cook for approximately for two to
three minutes on each side until it browns then turn the
bread over and cook another two to three minutes until
bread is completely done.
If you are cooking these breads over an open flame
or on a grill, cook until the dough starts to turn golden
brown and puffs a little. Turn over and cook until both
sides have brown spots and the dough is completely
cooked.
Repeat this process with each piece of dough.
Keep warm between two clean kitchen towels. Serve
immediately with your favorite taco topping.
These breads can be used with any taco recipes or
served as bread with any meal.

This recipe is a plant-based, no-meat version of a

traditional Native green chile stew. It is delicious and
hearty, perfect for a cold winter meal.
Green Chile Stew
(Serves 6 to 8)
1/2 cup water
1 large organic onion, diced
2 teaspoons garlic, finely chopped
2 cups roasted, seeded and chopped mild
New Mexico green chiles
1/2 28 ounce can plum tomatoes with basil,
no salt added (chopped)
3 cups water
1-1/2 pounds Dutch yellow potatoes, or about 20 small
potatoes, wash and diced with skins on
1 cup organic frozen corn kernels
Salt and pepper to taste
In a cast-iron skillet over medium to high heat, heat 1/2
cup water until hot then add onion. Saut the onion for
four minutes until clear. Add garlic and saut for one
minute. Add the chopped green chiles and cook for two
minutes. Add the chopped tomatoes and cook for another
two minutes. Add the water and the potatoes and bring to
a boil.
Reduce heat and simmer on medium for 35 minutes or
until the potatoes are soft. Add the corn kernels, salt and
pepper to taste. Serve immediately.

As a young man, Sam Berger, a retired corporate
and real estate attorney in Santa Fe, was fit. He
joined the Army and continued daily workouts until
law school, when he realized that he wasnt feeling
well.
I started my career and I did very little, almost nothing,
said Berger about exercise. As I got into my 40s, I
realized I was gaining weight and I was listless. I also had
a problem with my heart, which was another reason to
get into a program to maintain weight and fitness.
It took him more than 25 years, but Berger, who now
regularly plays tennis, and walks, hikes or takes Pilates,
has lost 70 pounds. And he feels 100 percent better.
Its an ongoing thing-you have to consistently have
to work out, he said. For me, Pilates has helped. Its a
really good workout. It makes you stronger. It keeps you
more limber and it keeps you looser.
Pilates is but one way to get healthy. Fitness experts
say you dont need classes or expensive equipment to get
healthy or lose weight. The key is just to get moving.
It could be as simple as doing push-ups on your desk
or sit-ups on a chair, said Raymond Kurshals, owner of
Pilates Santa Fe. Anything that you could do would be

beneficial. There are a plethora of books that teach office
exercises, for example. But just walking up and down
steps is fantastic.
While many people exercise to lose weight, studies
have shown that exercise has other benefits, such as
preventing or limiting osteoporosis, increasing brain
activity and improving childrens academic performance.
Another added benefit in todays busy and demanding
world: stress relief.
Its hard because we all have busy lives. We have kids
and jobs and dogs to take care of and cats to feed and
fish to feed. But you just have to make a little bit of time,
a commitment to take a little bit out of your day, said
Ted Freedman, the physical education teacher at Wood
Gormley Elementary School. If you only have 30 minutes,
go for a walk or go to the gym or do a little swimming.
Its hard, but it just takes the commitment to make
yourself a healthier and fitter person, he added. And
youll sleep better.
In the City Different, Freedman said there are a number
of great hiking and walking trails to take not only the dog
but the entirely family. He suggested making an evening
out of it. He also suggested to grab bicycles for a change
of pace. He also said Santa Fe has some great public
centers, such as the Genoveva Chavez Community Center
and the Santa Fe Community College, which both have
indoor tracks and swimming pools, to help people with
their fitness goals.
If youre a beginner, you want to get with someone
who knows what they are doing so they can ease you
into the sport you want to get involved in and they could
ease you into so you wont get injured. Or you can meet
like-minded people trying to do the same thing you are,
advised Freedman, who organizes an annual fundraising
community run for his schools physical education
program.
Other lower-impact sports, such as Pilates and Tai Chi,
also are good for keeping fit.
Michael DeMarco, a 40-year veteran Tai Chi instructor,
said most people think Tai Chi just involves long, slow
movement.
But thats only one form of Tai Chi, he said. As a
physical exercise its very good. Its like a moving art form.
On top of that, its creating something and its fun. And

BY MI CHAEL A. DEMARCO
When it comes to nurturing and maintaining health,
many Santa Feans seek an appropriate exercise method
that fits their own physical and mental makeup. If you
are considering Tai Chi Chuan as an exercise, then it is
important to become familiar with its fundamental theory
and practice.
Its very name indicates that Tai Chi Chaun is a boxing
system. Through its development as a combative art,
leading practitioners gained profound insights into the
human condition. They sought perfection in natural
movement, uninhibited by faulty techniques or disruptive
emotions.
Tai Chi proved its worth for physical fitness through
the centuries, conditioning master fighters for peak
performance. Fortunately, a branch of Tai Chi evolved into
a holistic exercise system to be shared with the general
population. Rather than focus on the combative elements,
its health benefits and spiritually nurturing aspects
became the focus of instruction.
What makes Tai Chi such an extraordinary exercise? There
is a simple explanation: its practice helps remove kinks
that are present in the body, kinks that impair ones health
and invite disease.
Tai Chi looks so simple, yet it takes practice to do well:
finding a kink, trying to learn how it got there, and
repeating the movement for hours, over days and months,
until the kink dissolves. The goal is to eventually become
supple and light, yet strong.
To smooth out the kinks, a Tai Chi practitioner realizes
improvements do not simply come from time spent in
class. Tai Chi becomes part of ones daily life, putting the
principles to use in thoughts and mundane actions. If you
practice Tai Chi or another exercise formor do nothing
at all to nourish your own health I hope this article
inspires you to iron out the kinks.
DeMarco has studied martial arts for more than 40 years,
including Tai Chi in Taiwan. He has a masters of arts in Asian
Studies. His Web site is www.wingedliontaiji.com.
thats a major draw to Tai Chi its like a moving art, a
way of movement that involves your body and mind that
becomes fun and interesting. Its never boring, that can
keep you with it. Its like learning how to paint or playing
piano. You grow with practice.
To lose weight, however, working the heart is key.
Fitness experts say cardiovascular workouts will help with
weight loss, but suggest going to a practitioner to find out
what type of exercise is right for you. They also suggest
changing your diet and lowering your caloric intact.
When Sam Berger made the decision to take charge of
his health, he cut out fatty foods and lots of red meat and
added fish and more vegetables. He also started working
out with friends for support but later went to a trainer
who pushed him to run flights of stairs, among other fat-
burning workouts.
I dont starve myself. I eat straight meals and I cut
the portions down, but I dont overeat, Berger said. I
stopped snacking at night, gave up the ice cream and
cookies at night. That was huge.
Its a discipline and it doesnt happen overnight,
he added. You have to work on it. Once you get into
it, it becomes part of your life. You just do it and it
automatically becomes part of your life.

The economy might be down, but Santa Fe is home
to several establishments that can boost your
chances of decent employment during the ongoing
recession and beyond.
Santa Feans can pursue health care career training from
emergency medical technology and nursing to acupuncture
or massage therapy, all without leaving town.
Health care support also called allied health is a
career field with plentiful jobs and more expected as Baby
Boomers age. The training/classroom loads are rigorous,
but the payoffs in personal satisfaction and a respectable
salary, depending on your job location and specialty
niche, seem commensurate.
Recognizing the state and community need for such
services, Santa Fe Community Colleges School of Health
and Sciences recently took a giant step forward. The
colleges new 48,000-square-foot, $15.7 million wings
seem more like a teaching hospital than a community
college campus: new nursing and biology labs, a dental
lab, as well as a dental clinic run by La Familia Medical
Center and an Emergency Medical Services Institute lab.
The idea is to have a health careers training site for all
of Northern New Mexico, said Dr. Julie Good, School of
Health and Sciences dean. We offer two-year associate

degrees plus certificate programs as short as seven months.
We have to be one-stop shops, she said. So from the
time you apply until the time you graduate, you can get all
your courses here.
First, of course, a student might need to complete a few
prerequisites, the previous coursework or life experience
that educational institutions require for certain programs.
Those vary from college to college and from major to
major. See a campus academic adviser to obtain reliable,
current information. For those short in the prerequisite
department, community college science courses can
provide the necessary background for biological/physical
science programs, other Allied Health programs and even
lab electives for non-science majors.
For example, nursing students compose 105 of our 400
declared majors, Good said. But not everybody with the
intention of majoring in nursing will get into the program.
So theyre getting prerequisites, then theyll apply.
A few students need developmental help, especially
in science and math, and there is a touch of science and
math in all health programs, she said.
At the Emergency Medical Services Institute, students
are trained to handle emergencies and then go out to help
their neighbors. Many students are local; they train here,
they go to work here, said Eve Kwiatkowski, Emergency
Medical Services Institute director.
A major drawing card for Santa Fe Community College
are the new simulation labs, complete with realistic, but
non-human patients that can breathe, excrete, even talk
with a microchips help and a central control viewing room.
Its basically a giant movie set, and you approach
it with a suspension of disbelief, said Kwiatkowski.
We let the students fly without a safety net. If they do
it wrong, its not a mistake, its a learning opportunity.
We prepare students for a once-in-a-lifetime medical
situation for instance, a breech birth in Raton. You may
only encounter it once, but when you do, youd better be
prepared.
Recent EMT graduate Bob Sorenson is a former
DuPont employee, now on his third retirement. He
taught introduction to health-care careers for six years
at Santa Fes Capital High School, in conjunction with
the community college. That entitles him to a unique
perspective on the program.
The high school students enrolled in the program
came back and raved about the all the things they were
learning, that it was hands-on, Sorenson said. I thought
Id go out and check it out to see if it was as good as they
were saying. It was better.
The program is rigorous and you better know what
youre doing. The quizzes have 150 questions and they
also push critical thinking. Theyre preparing you to go
out with the ambulance, he said.
If youre not interested in emergency medicine, nursing
or dental hygiene, Santa Fes holistic health care training
centers offer other paths to healing.
Southwest Acupuncture College occupies a new two-
story building across Galisteo Street from Christus St.
Vincent Regional Medical Center. Its graced with a 25x20-
foot koi pond, blonde wood, Asian wall hangings and
other treasures, including a clock with Chinese numerals.
The college, which offers a masters degree in oriental
medicine, Chinese medical theory, and related classes,
also has branches in Boulder and Albuquerque.
It accepts applicants in good standing at least 20 years
of age with evidence that their personal credentials
and intellectual skills are of such quality as to predict a
high rate of success in the study and practice of Oriental
medicine, and a well-rounded academic background,
combined with a passion to learn this medicine,
according to the college website.

Also required: at least 60 semester or 90 quarter pre-
admission credits of general undergraduate education
from an accredited college. The college also encourages
an additional 90 semester hours of human anatomy and
physiology and 45 hours of general human biology.
Scherer Institute, at the often-bustling corner of Siler
Road and Agua Fra Street, occupies part of a post-
industrial gym-like commercial strip. But inside, its calm
and comfortable.
We couldnt believe how well things went this year,
said Scherer co-owner Cathy Black. We have room for
more students, but its still better than it was two to three
years ago. Weve made our scheduling more available to
people and they can mix and match courses. We put new
things in place and the key to success the last few years
was to be so flexible.
Asked if there might be a surfeit of massage therapists
in Santa Fe, director Lonnie Howards said, The field is
getting crowded. But if theyre really good, they can make
a niche for themselves.
Ken Wilhelm, water quality specialist for San Ildefonso
Pueblo, is one of those niche-carvers.
I always had a passion for massage, he said. I kept
telling myself that someday Id learn it, and some day was
here. I had to make it happen.
He did.
Wilhelm, who holds a bachelor of science from the
University of Cincinnati and a master of science from
Murray State University, graduates from the 700-hour
program this February. Hell start connective tissue
classes in the spring.
He advises potential students to shop around, go to the
open houses, meet the teachers, talk with the grads. Every
school has its own personality; not necessarily that one is
better than the others, but one may be a better fit for you.
Stephanie Nolan, whose undergraduate degree
was in plant and soil science, is also certified in rapid
eye technology. Shes studying for massage therapy
certification at Scherer.
Nolan, like Wilhelm, advises potential students to start
with a list of things that really excite you, make you
happy. If youve already decided you want to go into body

or healing work, then create questions based on that, so
when you interview with a school, youll have a good idea
if it would be a good fit.
At the New Mexico Academy of Healing Arts, 501
Franklin Ave., Genie Weber-Stevens, the academys
executive director, said, I think the days of having to
justify alternative healing are over. We have some of the
most sophisticated healing arts education you can find.
Lisa Bauer, originally from Chicago, is an advanced
student certified in polarity, who is working now on
massage certification at the Academy of Healing Arts.
This is really an eclectic school, she said. Some have
a signature or certain style. Here, they help us to realize
our own style, help us to broaden out. All these options
help fuel the creativity you need to work. The future
for students lies in having enough clinic work and with
intuition, being able to treat each person, as needed.
People come here from all over the world to get
healed, Bauer said. There is such a large pool of
excellent healers in Santa Fe, and they dont overcharge. I
think I could stay here and finally make a living.

Health care in Santa Fe is becoming more state-of-
the-art after recent changes at Christus St. Vincent
Regional Medical Center.
Its very exciting to introduce endoscopic ultrasounds, a
new state-of-the-art procedure to Northern New Mexico at
Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center. Its a service
which wasnt available before, said Dr. Alejandra Castillo-
Roth, chair of the GI Council at the hospital. Previously,
patients who need such ultrasounds were being sent to
Colorado and Arizona, and
also to UNM, which could
not meet the demand of so
many patients. And its been
a busy start from the very
beginning am happy to be
able to provide this service
for the community in the
place I want to live, Castillo-
Roth said.
The more we diversify our
services at the hospital, the
better, Castillo-Roth said.
It is very nice to be able to
provide these services here in
one area so that patients do
not need to travel far the get these procedures done.
The advanced endoscopic procedure, which allows
the physician to examine beyond the walls of the
gastrointestinal tract, provides information on critical
areas beyond the lining of the gastrointestinal tract: the
pancreas, biliary ducts, spleen, liver, blood vessels, lymph
nodes. It is an investigative procedure that can help
diagnose diseases such as pancreatic cancer, pancreatitus,
biliary stones, cancerous tumors, as well as rectal or
esophageal cancers, critical findings a basic colonoscopy
may not detect.
Originally from Venezuela, Castillo-Roth says she feels
at home in Santa Fe.
One thing I love about Santa Fe is its big Hispanic
heritage, which is also my heritage, too, she said. Being
bilingual in Spanish and English is very helpful in dealing
with the diverse population of patients in Northern New
Mexico.
Castillo-Roth has been in the United States for 10 years.
Before her appointment at Christus, Castillo-Roth served
as advanced endoscopy fellow and junior faculty member
in the Division of Gastroenterology at Duke University
Medical Center.
Although the ultrasound procedures are already being
performed, the hospital plans to have the new Digestive
Health Center completed by mid-to-late April, 2011,
providing a new home for the top-of-the-line equipment
currently in use.
In addition to the new facility dedicated to endoscopic
ultrasound, the hospital recently has relocated and
remodeled the Sleep Center inside the Sports Medicine
Center directly across from the hospitals lower level, a
move that is sure to provide advancement in the field of
sleep study.
Other new developments at the hospital:
In response to an increase in the number of whooping
cough cases in New Mexico and across the country, the
hospital has begun a rigorous pertussis study developed
by Christus St. Vincent Womens Services Department as
part of a pilot program with the New Mexico Department
of Health. The study group will be administrating 3,000
doses of TDap to immunize the following risk groups:
Labor delivery and staff, mothers of newborns, and
primary and significant caregivers of newborns.
The hospital lobby has also been renovated and
remodeled. This was a concerted effort by the hospital to
use building and decorative materials such as stones and
soft colors that are inviting and comforting. In addition to
lightening up the area overall, the lobby now has more
space to ensure a bigger, more inviting area where visitors
can take a break from the hospital floors in order to relax
and regroup. The lobby is also equipped with free Wi-Fi
access as well, so visitors can use their waiting time to
access the internet.

Newlocation puts S.F. Recovery
Center facilities on one property
By Ana Maria Trujillo
The NewMexican
Marizabel Ulibarri, a therapist with the Santa Fe
Recovery Centers outpatient program, said every-
thing on her office walls has a special meaning and
is designed to make her patients feel comfortable.
What it says here is, My world starts with my
family, Ulibarri said, translating a section of a
poster hanging prominently in her office, which still
has a hint of a fresh-paint smell. She pointed out a
garland of roses above her window, a statue of the
Virgin Mary and a tin cross with sections of mirrors
in it. Everything is designed to reflect some part of
her Spanish-speaking patients culture, she said.
But the therapist doesnt have to try hard to make
her patients feel comfortable in the outpatient pro-
grams new2,300-square-foot building located
off Lucia Lane, next door to the centers residential
program. The building, owned by Santa Fe County

Question: What is being done to enable
ocean fish populations to rebound after
being so overfished? Are nations coming
together on this? Deborah Kay, Milford,
Conn.
Answer: There is no overarching inter-
national agreement to limit global over-
fishing, but a fewgovernments have been
able to implement and enforce restrictions
at regional levels that have resulted in
rebounding fish stocks. The success of
these isolated examples gives environ-
mentalists and marine biologists hope that
protecting marine hot spots fromoverfish-
ing can save the biodiversity of the worlds
oceans.
The results of an extensive four-year
study released in 2006 by leading
fisheries expert Boris Wormof Canadas
Dalhousie University and colleagues
showed overfishing would put every
commercial fishery in the world out of
business by 2048, with the oceans poten-
tially never recovering. But University
of Washington fisheries scientist Ray
Hilborn challenged Worms frightening
conclusion, offering evidence that several
fisheries in parts of the U.S., Iceland and
NewZealand were recovering. The two
men decided to teamup on a new, more
comprehensive survey of fisheries around
the world.

What our patients are saying:
Hearing loss is never a pleasant experience. My care at SWENT has always been wonderful. Beginning in the mid-1990s,
Dr. Kathleen Weidner has been great - professional, courteous and even humorous when appropriate (which is nearly always!).
I highly recommend Audiology and ENT care at SWENT. I continue to see them regularly and the care remains of highest quality.
- Raphiel Benjamin, MD
Kathleen Weidner has been helping me with hearing aids for the past 10 years. My family and friends are as grateful as I am.
I no longer struggle to hear and turn up the volume or keep asking for repeats. Now if someone doesnt answer me, they have the
hearing problem; mines taken care of. My aids have been comfortable from the beginning, and, as technology has improved, I have
upgraded and enjoyed the advances. - Sharon Vandevelde
