MCC hosts three-day historical celebration
SIDNEY Heritage Village celebrates its 25th anniversary with its annual Heritage Festival, Aug. 4-6 in Montcalm Heritage Village, located on Montcalm Community Colleges Sidney campus. Take a trip down memory lane during the three-day celebration, which features historical displays, events, refreshments and music for all ages. The festival is offered by the Montcalm Heritage Village Committee, a group of community volunteers that works year around in the historical Heritage Village on the colleges campus; MCC and the MCC Foundation. Montcalm Heritage Village was established in 1986 on MCCs campus and has grown to include more than 20 buildings and hundreds of artifacts from local areas depicting life in Michigan in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The opening ceremony is Aug. 4 at 11 a.m. in the Village Church. Several events run all three days including historical displays in Heritage Village buildings, a tool and machinery show in the blacksmith shop, display of a 1937 Chevrolet-General Pumper fire truck, Civil War encampment, schoolroom reenactments in the Gaffield School until 1 p.m., a quilt show and quilting instruction, live music, printing demonstrations, a bake sale, used book sale, yard sale and craft demonstrations. Aug. 4 is the Montcalm County Commission on Aging Day. Special events for senior citizens are in MCCs Beatrice E. Doser Building and include bingo, dessert and refreshment samples by local vendors, and health and lifestyle booths. Bob Milne, the top ragtime and boogie-woogie pianist in the United States, returns to Montcalm Community Colleges Barn Theater for one performance at 7 p.m. Aug. 5. Milne demonstrates the showy styles of the ragtime era on the piano and highlights his tunes with stories and commentaries about the music and musicians of the mid-1800s through the 1920s. Tickets are $10 and will be available at the door beginning at 6:30 p.m. Contact MCC Dean of Instruction and Faculty Gary Hauck at garyh@montcalm. edu or (989) 328-1234 for more information. On Aug. 6, the MCC Foundation hosts its pancake breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m. in MCCs Activities Building. Proceeds from the breakfast support MCC scholarships. The cost is $5 per person in advance or $6 at the door. Advance tickets are available by calling (989) 328-1284 or by e-mailing terrys@montcalm.edu. Other special events on Aug. 6 include childrens activities, a blacksmith demonstration and Vintage Baseball games, following rules and customs from the 1860s. Visit www.montcalm.edu/heritagevillage. aspx for a complete schedule of events or for more information about Montcalm Heritage Village.

Knight & Red Flannels are here to stay

The Red Flannel Festival Board of Directors has been working diligently to provide fresh new events for the 72nd Knight & Day Red Flannels Are Here To Stay! Festival celebration. The board has added over 20 new events in the last few years and boasts over 2,700 fans on our Facebook page, said President Michele Tracy-Andres. This board is extremely dedicated to ensuring the Red Flannel Festival the biggest and best ever! Were already working on plans for NEW EVENTS for the 73rd celebration in 2012! There is definitely a historical connection with the theme and the Original 1939 Order of Knights of the Red Flannel Drawers. According to the authors of the Cedar Springs Story, Sue Harrison and Donna DeJong, the history of the Order of the Knights of the Red Flannel Drawers is as follows: The first Red Flannel Day was held Nov. 11, 1939 and Carleton Cady wrote in that issue of the Grand Rapids Press: Lurid lingerie adorned the limbs of nearly every citizen. Scarlet certificates of knighthood were issued to members of the Order of Knights of the Red Flannel Drawers, who proudly wore the badge, which, in miniature, reproduced the article that on winter Mondays flies from Cedar Springs clotheslines. Their password was itch. Dr. C. W. Brayman, James H. Cook and Jack Pollock were some of the first members in good standing, crowing the first Red Flannel Queen, Maxine Smith. We believe the miniature badges referred to are the small, red flannel cutouts you see on lapels today. The Festival continues to expand its advertising portfolio with the addition of several billboards to advertise this years events! Again this year, the Festival has partnered with WLAV, 96.9 FM

Circus celebrates 73rd year in 2011

The Kelly Miller Circus, founded during the Great Depression, is marking another milestone this year as it celebrates its seventy-third anniversary. Founded in 1938 by Obert Miller and his sons Kelly and Dores, this traditional tented circus has seen the passing of over half of the last century and still offers the same great family entertainment it presented in its humble beginnings. Thanks to the sponsorship of the J & H Family Stores for the benefit of The Ensley Park Committee, the all new 2011 edition of the Kelly Miller Circus will be in town on Friday Aug. 26, 2011 for two performances at 4:30 & 7:30 p.m. at the Howard City Ball Parks behind McNaughton School. This years show features elephants, horses and a cast of international circus stars under a beautiful circus big top. The tent raising itself is a great free show that will take place at 9:00 a.m. and the public is invited to witness this very entertaining event. Enjoying a day at the circus means a lot more than just old-fashioned family fun. This event is a fundraiser that J & H Family Stores is sponsoring for the benefit of The Ensley Park Committee. Advance tickets will save you money and can be purchased at Community First Credit Union, First Bank, Independent Bank, Leppinks, Pierson Mobil, Howard City Mobil, Sticks & Stones, and the M-46 Truck Stop. Advanced ticket sales must end on the 25th of August.

Michigan residents urged not to handle wildlife

In Michigan, most rabies cases occur during the summer months, so officials from the Michigan Departments of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD), Community Health (MDCH) and Natural Resources (DNR) are urging residents to protect themselves and their animals against the disease. Rabies is a viral disease that can infect mammals, it causes inflammation of the brain and once symptoms begin there is no treatment, and it is always fatal. Never handle wild animals, said Dr. Dean Sienko, MDCH Interim Chief Medical Executive. Its also important to teach children to never touch unfamiliar wild or unfamiliar domestic animals. Any mammal is capable of being infected with rabies. Rodents rarely test positive for rabies, however recently a woodchuck (a larger member of the rodent family) bit a person in Oakland County and tested positive for rabies. This is the first time rabies has been found in a woodchuck in Michigan. The bite victim received post exposure treatment for rabies and is doing well. Further testing at the MDCH Lab identified the rabies type as a skunk strain. Several species of wild animals serve as reservoirs for the rabies virus in the U.S. For example, bats throughout Michigan can transmit rabies and counties in southeast Michigan and the Thumb harbor a strain of rabies associated with skunks. Any unprovoked wild mammal that has bitten a human should be euthanized and submitted for rabies testing, said Dr. Steve Schmitt, DNR State Wildlife Veterinarian. Save bats for testing if there is even the slightest question of exposure, especially if the bat was found in a sleeping area. Its also important that residents take steps to prevent rabies in their livestock and pets. Rabies is out there and owners need to vaccinate their livestock and pets including horses and avoid contact with wild animals, said Dr. Steve Halstead, MDARD State Veterinarian. Skunk strain rabies can infect domestic pets and livestock following fights or other contact. Rabies is a virus that infects the nervous system of humans and other mammals. It is transmitted by the bite of an infected animal, or if saliva from an infected animal gets onto a mucous membrane such as the eyes, nose, or mouth, or into a break in the skin. Rabies is fatal if proper treatment is not received. Preventive treatment is given to people who are exposed to a potentially rabid animal. Treatment is not necessary if an animal tests negative for rabies. Michigan citizens are encouraged to take the following precautions: n Seek medical care if you are bitten by a wild animal. If possible, collect the animal and consult with local health authorities to determine if rabies testing is necessary. n If you awaken to a bat in a room where you have been sleeping, seek medical attention. Secure the bat and consult with local public health officials about the need for rabies testing. If the animal tests negative, then rabies post exposure treatment can be avoided. n Michigan citizens should be proactive and have their pets and livestock vaccinated against rabies. By working with their veterinarians, pet owners can take significant steps toward providing a safe and healthy environment for their families and animals. For information about rabies in Michigan, visit Michigans Emerging Disease website at www.michigan.gov/ rabies.

Dining with Diabetes seminar coming to Montcalm County

People with diabetes can have a hard time understanding what they should eat. Michigan State University Extension will be offering the Dining With Diabetes seminar at the Montcalm County Commission on Aging office, 613 North State Street in Stanton on Tuesdays, Aug. 9 through Aug. 30 from 1 to 3 p.m. Dining with Diabetes is a once a week class that runs for four weeks. This class is open to those with diabetes, their family members and caretakers. Whether you are newly diagnosed or want to refresh your knowledge, plan to come. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. You will learn how to prepare meals that are healthy, easy to prepare and taste good. Recipes will be demonstrated and participants will have the opportunity to taste each one. Participants will also learn up-to-date information on nutrition, meal planning, exercise and how to understand common diabetes-related medical tests. Each participant will receive recipe booklets and handouts. Diabetes is a very serious and costly disease, but research has shown that those who learn to manage their blood glucose (sugar) levels, eat healthy and exercise regularly can lower their risk of complications and lead a healthier and more productive life. Registration for this program can be made by calling the Montcalm County Commission on Aging office at (989) 8317476 or the MSU Ionia Extension office toll-free 1-888-678-3464/1/Ionia by Aug. 3. Plan your next family reunion vacation with confidence

Family reunion vacations can provide unforgettable memories and unique opportunities to grow closer to loved ones. For the planners of these events, however, they can also present a challenge when it comes to balancing the familys needs. When its time for your next trip, consider these expert tips designed to guide the coordination process and even make it as stress-free as the vacation itself: Choose a destination Determine the destination based on how far you are willing to travel and the types of activities and attractions you are interested in. Families with smaller budgets looking for relaxation can take a road trip to a nearby beach or lake region while families with a larger budget searching for adventure might fly to Europe. Planning around prominent events, such as food and wine festivals, is also becoming an increasingly popular trend. Determine must-haves

Can you say Bye-Bye Family Farm?

Dads family farm and life insurance were once safe, but no longer
Medicaid might pay Dads rent. So Dad, age 70, needed more care than you could give him. Prior to 2007 Dad might have qualied for Medicaid assistance in paying his nursing home bills under its low-income rules, without having to sell the family home or farm or his car. He might have been able to keep a certain amount of his cash and some other more minor valued assets and still qualify for help. He spent his own dough. First, in theory, Dad had to spend or use up all his other assets on his own nursing home bill. But when that ran out, Medicaid assisted. Dad got to live the dignied life he deserved. The family farm was preserved. The feds fought it. In 1993, Federal law required each state to develop a plan to give the Feds back the Medicaid money it spent on long term care, from each deceaseds assets. The federal government wanted Dads originally exempted property. Michigans governors fought it. In 2007 Michigan was the last state, though kicking and screaming, to adopt its plan. In a nutshell for Dad, Michigans plan provides that the federal government can recover its Medicaid money from Dads estate after he dies, but only from those of Dads assets (in Dads case, the family farm) passing to his beneciaries through probate (not from his life insurance or his retirement money). Avoid probate, avoid expense-recovery. A good estate plan could avoid probate and thus save the farm. Does the family farm go? Michigan began its asset recovery enforcement plan on July 1. Specically, Michigan seeks reimbursement from Dads probate assets for expenses that Medicaid paid for any long-term care services (like nurs-

ing home expenses) for him, if he was age 55 or older on September 30, 2007, and provided he didnt leave a spouse or minor/dependent child living in the home/farm. Only by using legal estate planning techniques like trusts and lady bird deeds to pass Dads property to you without probate, could Dads valued family farm and its tradition been preserved. OUCH! Now they want Dads life insurance. And now Governor Snyders on to Dad. At the direction of the Governors ofce the Senate Committee on Appropriations is currently considering Senate Bills 404-406, which are gearing to grab more of Dads assets. These Senate bills could wipe out the farm/home exemption, impose a lien on Dads farm/home while hes alive, and grab other assets like Dads life insurance and retirement accounts to repay Medicaid for advancing Dad money to pay his long term care rent and expenses. Apparently the Govs gured out that we know how to prevent so many diseases, or stave them off for years, that most of us will spend a good part of our lives in a nursing home not knowing our own names. He also knows well all want to save the family farm. So the Gov prefers that Dad pay his own bills, and pay them now, even if it means losing the family farm. Apparently the Governor thinks we should save Medicaid for the truly poor. Theres a thought.

Healing and Health Care
Many years ago Dr. Bruce Bennett from Lakeview Medical Center told me, in the eld of medicine there are healers and there are technicians; you must learn to be both. At the time I was not sure what he meant, but over the years it turned out to be a great bit of insight. I have continued to study and learn in both of these areas. Technology is the area of medicine that traditional health care has been following. Surgery, pharmacology, tests and medical imaging have advanced tremendously in the last 30 years and costs of care have sky rocketed along with that. (Isnt it interesting that the cost of an MRI in the US is $1700 to $2000 compared to $160 in Japan?) But in spite of the negatives, I am still amazed every day, at the life saving things that the technology of medicine can perform. I do not always agree with the way prescription medicines are used in this country. The drug industry has had a huge inuence on the education of health care providers and many times we are coached by them to try to micro manage body chemistry to create a specic outcome. In some cases that is necessary. But we have lost sight of the fact that the body can heal itself in most cases. And often we have simply accepted unwanted side effects as part of the benet of the drug. In natural health, we have seen a huge increase in the technology also. There are thousands of new computers, sensors, herbs, supplements, and treatment devices. Along with the new, there is a resurrection of many of the old and ancient methods that still have validity. With the increased understanding of quantum physics we are now better able to understand what is happening with Energy Medicine. In homeopathy, for example, the energy signature from a plant is captured by a remedy preparation and now is able to be transferred to a person or pet to heal symptoms that match the remedy. There is no simple explanation at the present time for how and why this works, but I am sure it is related to quantum physics. We have seen so much success with homeopathy, and at rst, it was difcult to make the leap to use things when we really do not know how they work. On the other hand, I do not really know exactly how most prescription medicines work either, so maybe it is not too much of a stretch. There are some new energy healing methods beginning to immerge onto the scene. Dr. Eric Pearl has doing amazing energy healing work which he calls Reconnection. This is different than most of the New Age healing techniques and claims remarkable results. I used to watch Dr. Bennett just sit at the bedside of a very ill patient, sometimes all night, and many times they got better even though he really did not do anything. He never could explain it, but would just say, Sometimes they just needed someone there. That seemed very strange to me as a new graduate, thinking we should cure the world with drugs and surgery. Now I understand that the good Doc was, in some unknown way, truly a healer, in addition to being a good technician. Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Bob Huttinga PA-C. 989-352-6500.

Circle Of Love
By Tresa Erickson
When a couple gets married, they usually exchange rings as a symbol of their union. Wedding ring styles can run the gamut from simple gold bands to custom diamond creations. Whatever the choice, whatever the price, wedding rings have long been a part of the celebration and there are many superstitions surrounding them. Following is a brief description of some of them. According to superstition, it is bad luck to drop the ring during the wedding ceremony. Whoever does so will be the rst to die. If the ring does happen to get dropped, neither the bride nor the groom should pick it up. Whoever is ofciating should. Superstition also has it that a wedding ring dropped in a cemetery that rolls across a grave indicates death death of the bride if the grave is of a female or death of the groom if the grave is of a male. Wear the ring on the right nger In most countries, wedding rings are worn on the ring nger, or the fourth nger, of the left hand. Dont drop the ring

This stems from the ancient belief that the vein of that particular nger on the left hand ran straight to the heart. In other countries, the ring is worn on the ring nger of the right hand. This stems from the belief that the thumb and rst two ngers of the right hand are sacred to the Trinity. Taking the wedding ring off could lead to loss or damage, a sign the marriage will come to an end. Lost or damaged wedding rings should be replaced as soon as possible and vows renewed. In some areas, it is acceptable to remove a wedding ring after the birth of the rst child. Superstition also has it that a wedding ring suspended on a lock of hair over the womb of a pregnant woman can determine the sex of the baby. Spinning clockwise denotes a boy; spinning counterclockwise denotes a girl. There are many other superstitions regarding wedding rings. Rubbing a wedding ring over a wart or sty will remove it, while sleeping with a bite of wedding cake pulled through a wedding ring will bring dreams of the persons future spouse. Some couples have a faux wedding ring baked inside their wedding cake. The guest that nds the ring will be Other superstitions Dont take the ring off

Of course, all of these are merely superstitions. Brides and grooms do lose their wedding ring from time to time, and while it might lead to some tension with their partner, it usually does not spell the end of their marriage. It gives them the opportunity to get a new ring, perhaps even one better than before. It is fun to learn what superstitions brides and grooms once observed. Many seem silly today, but that wasnt the case at the time.

married within the year. Pearls are shaped like tears, and therefore, not a good idea for wedding rings. Sapphires and aquamarines, on the other hand, symbolize marital bliss and make an excellent choice for wedding rings.

Bridal Shower Trends

By Tresa Erickson
Not so long ago when a couple announced their engagement and the bride selected her maid of honor, the maid of honor would start planning the bridal shower. She would invite all of the brides closest female friends and family members together to toast the bride and share good times with her. While some brides today continue this tradition, others take an alternative route. One of the biggest trends in bridal showers today is the couples shower in which friends and family gather together with both the bride and the groom. With more grooms taking an active role in the wedding planning and more couples footing the bill for their wedding themselves, it is only natural that some couples would want to share the shower experience. Couples showers can be held at someones home or at one of the couples favorite venues.

For those that prefer the traditional women-only bridal shower, a hot new trend is to center it on some activity, like bowling, making pottery, going to the spa or volunteering for an organization. This requires less planning and provides for a fun, stress-free experience for one and all. Guests can participate in the activity and share a meal afterwards, either at the venue or at a restaurant.

Whatever the choice of bridal shower, anyone can host it-family, friends, even coworkers. Brides, or couples, can have more than one shower. The brides mother might throw one for family and friends, while her coworker throws one for business associates and colleagues. If the couple has a rather large circle of family and friends, they might end up having three or four bridal showers. It all depends upon time and preference. The key to any good shower is to involve the bride or couple. Whoever is hosting the shower should get the input of the bride or the couple and respect their wishes. After all, they are the guests of honor.

For brides that prefer to stay home, themed showers continue to be popular. Themes can run the gamut from kitchen gadgets to entertainment to the brides favorite things. And because many brides are already living on their own and have the items needed to set up house, gifts can range from the unique to the wacky.

If time and budget permit, destination showers are another idea. The bride and a select group of friends and family can take a little trip together. They can hop a plane and spend a few days at the beach or take the train to a ski resort. The sky is the limit.

Less Can Be More

By Tresa Erickson

RIVER VALLEY NEWS SHOPPER MONDAY, JULY 25, 2011

for your phonograph. It would look lovely in your friends parlor, and theyre even willing to pay you what its worth.

My, how time has own. Seems like only yesterday you were packing up for the big move to your house. Now your children are all grown, some with children of their own, and the house you have cherished for so long seems big and empty. The time has come for you to downsize.

Downsizing typically involves moving to a smaller home, which creates a number of positives. Depending upon how much you still owe on your current house, you may make enough of a prot to put down a substantial down payment on a smaller house or buy it outright. Either way, you will have more cash in your pocket for other things. With less square footage, you will have lower utility bills and make fewer purchases, allowing you to save even more money. You will also have less to care for, easing stress and freeing up time. With downsizing also come some negatives, of course. You may not have the room for out-of-town guests, much less your possessions. Chances are everything in your home right now will not t in your new home. If you own a lot youre partial to, getting rid of some of it may not be easy. Ask your family and friends to help. They might even be willing to take some items off your hands. Wouldnt you rather see your daughter using your mothers china now than making her wait until after your death? The same goes

Paring down wont be easy, but it can be done. Be rm in what you want to keep and bequeath items only when ready. Dont succumb to the pressure of friends and family. Its your memories, so do with them as you wish. Just dont go overboard, or youll end up feeling like a can of sardines in your new home. Remember, youre downsizing to free up time and money and reduce stress. The more stuff you have, the less likely that is to happen.

Sifting through your possessions will take time. Dont rush the process, or you could end up making decisions you regret. Go through everything, old cards, letters, papers and more, and keep whats important to you. If youre holding onto items for your grown kids, dont. Let them know what you have and nd out what they want you to do with it. Do not take it to your new home. You need all of the space there for your own things. Give your children a time frame to retrieve the items they want or donate them to charity.

When sorting through your possessions, start in the rooms you use the least to avoid having to walk through an obstacle course for days on end. Move from large pieces to small and color-code everything according to whether you want to keep it, give it to a family member or friend, donate it to charity or sell it. With heirlooms youre handing down, write down any signicant details or memories associated with them for future owners. With heirlooms youre selling, bring in an expert to assess them and recommend the best method of sale.

Your Home Never Looked So Good! Summer Home Improvement

Attic fans can make a great difference in the temperature of your home. They pull the hot air out of your attic and the cool air in through your windows, reducing the temperature of your home up to 10 degrees and extending the life of your roof shingles. By Tresa Erickson Love the lazy days of summer, but hate the heat? Tired of the air conditioning running continuously? Why not install an attic fan and give your air conditioning system a break on those cool nights?

Cool Down For Less

Attic fans come in two general types: gable-mounted, which are secured to an outside attic wall, and oor-mounted, which are secured to the attic oor. Gable-mounted fans require professional installation, making them more costly, but are not nearly as noisy as oormounted fans, which can be installed by most do-it-yourselfers.

Attic fans work best in regions with cooler mornings and evenings. They are not advised for regions with heavy pollen and pollution, as they will draw the irritants into the home. The fans are most effective in the early morning and late evening when temperatures have dropped and may allow you to turn off the air conditioning during those times and save a little on your utility bills.

Should you decide you want an attic fan, you will have to select the right one for your needs. The larger your home, the more powerful fan you may need. You will also need the proper venting and may have some electrical concerns as well. Do your homework, and if needed, consult a professional. They should be able to advise you on the proper fan and installation of it.

Whatever the type of attic fan chosen, self-closing louvers must be mounted along with it. These allow for the movement of air when the fan is in use and keep attic dust out of the house when the fan is not in use.

Most attic fans are powered by electricity in one of two ways: directdrive or belt-driven. In the former, fan blades are attached directly to the spinning shaft of the motor; in the latter, theyre turned by a belt. Belt-driven fans cost more, but are quieter and more powerful, durable and easily maintained than direct-drive ones.
