THE DEVILFISH TIDES

Family Readiness Newsletter
From the Commanding Officer:
Devilfish Families, Greetings! I hope this newsletter arrives with you enjoying the "101 Days of Summer" spending good times with your family, friends, and fellow Devilfish. Celebrating our country's 235th birthday back in San Diego during the 4th of July holiday weekend was especially nice for my family and I. San Diego is a great place! I've been in command now coming up on almost two months, and can tell you that MALS-11 is in great shape and moving forward tackling new challenges supporting the flying squadrons of MAG-11, everyday. This includes our forward deployed Devilfish providing awesome support for VMFA-323 aboard the USS Ronald Reagan, and integrated into MALS-12 supporting VMFA-314 in Iwakuni, Japan. The one common theme that makes our squadron so great is the camaraderie and esprit-de-corps of our Marines and Sailors, whether single or married. Everyone sticks together whether in the work-spaces and while training, or while off duty enjoying liberty. Small unit leadership is alive and well, and keeping everyone well informed and motivated as members of the Devilfish Team. My goals are simple for the squadron: focus on improving aircraft and personnel readiness, which includes strengthening our Single Marine and Family Readiness Programs. You cannot accomplish one without the other, and I intend to keep you appropriately informed on the innovative and creative things your Devilfish are doing to improve aircraft readiness and the expeditionary capability of MAG-11, as well what we're doing to take care of the personal and professional well-being of our individual Marines and Sailors, and you, their families. As this is the first newsletter I've released, I intend to pick up the pace and generate more frequent newsletters to keep everyone "in the know" of things going on in the squadron, along these themes. Please contact my Family Readiness Officer, Mr. Anthony Hernandez, for any recommendations for topics or the format of our newsletter to make it more informative for you... Until next time, stay safe and enjoy the rest of July!

From the FRO:
Devilfish Family and Friends,

July 2011

SgtMajS Corner:
OOHRAHH Marines of MALS-11. Let's continue to keep the DUI's and ARI's down. Small unit leadership means every Marine and Sailor from the Commanding Officer down to the lowest Private in this command will do their part to alleviate any type of alcohol related incidents. As we are right in the midst of the 101 days of summer, let us keep safety in mind as we participate in summer activities. The Marine Corps Ball has been scheduled for November 4, 2011 and now is the time to ensure all uniforms are serviceable and ready. Marines, let us ensure that we are taking care of ourselves, our families, and the Marine Corps.

Schools out for summer As the days warm and schools have been dismissed, we turn our thoughts to summer fun. This month lets focus on Summer Vacation and Travel Planning. From single service members to families, We have the resources to get your summer plans underway. Here are some great tips to keep in mind for safety and a good reminder to keep your kids safe and prevent injuries or accidents from intruding on your family's summer fun. 1. Practice Sun Safety - Apply sunscreen - Get some sun-protective clothing - Shop for some cool shades 2. Protect Against Bugs - Use insect repellents to guard against ticks, which can carry Lyme Disease, and mosquitoes, which can carry the West Nile Virus and other viruses. - Wear long sleeve shirts and long pants when going outside - Never leave stagnant pools of water around the house - Avoid using scented soaps or perfumes on your child 3. Prevent Dehydration 4. Don't Forget Helmets 5. Practice Food Safety - Be sure to wash your hands before preparing or serving any food - Never cross-contaminate - Consider the temperature 6. Guard Against Drowning - Put barriers around the pool to restrict access - Never leave kids unsupervised - Do not use flotation devices - Learn CPR 7. Avoid Trampoline Danger 8. Warn kids about hiding in enclosed spaces. 9. Use Caution When Doing Yardwork 10. Safeguard home playgrounds

MALS-11, ORDNANCE:
Devilfish Family and friends, The MALS-11 Ordnance Department performs duties concerning the accounting, stowage, breakout, testing, maintenance, assembly and transportation of airborne armament equipment, armament-handling equipment, air launched missiles, and conventional weapons while also executing quality assurance, safety, and maintenance management duties. During the month of June 2011, the Ordnance Department participated in a multitude of activities and training. The Department provided continuous 24 hour support to the 5 MAG-11 FA-18 squadrons resulting in 157 tons and $8,561,835 dollars of Ordnance issued, delivered and expended while also taking part in valuable M61 Gun System training, supplying our Marines and Sailors with an ever increasing knowledge on the system and the maintenance involved. The Department also had Marines receive specialized training in the accounting program utilized to track all weapons throughout the Navy and Marine Corps with follow on training for preparing, inspecting and packaging weapons for shipment. Finally to finish off an outstanding month, the Ordnance Department hosted the retirement ceremony for the outgoing Ordnance Officer, Major Dirk Kuntz, celebrating 25 years of honorable service and opening the door to the incoming Ordnance Officer, Captain Darryn Lindsey! Please extend Fair Winds and Following Seas to Major Kuntz and a Devilfish Welcome to Captain Lindsey!
