USING SURVEING AND SKIMMING TO INTEREST STUDENT IN READING SKILL

INTRODUCTION

Reading

is one of central subject

in every language lecture. Define

reading as the study of a rules to understand meaning of the words by reading. In reading skill there are many way to use to be a good reading and one of the way that will explain in this paper is rapid read. Rapid read is good,but not good enough without use the three superspeeds surveing, skimming, and scanning. In reading skill we know that we have to prepare to read. Previewing is the first step in readingnwith good comprehension. Most of students preparento read even that preview the book or preview the chapter. The next step to read is read the title and introduction. Reading the title and introduction usually explains the main purpose of the chapter. Following are the title and introduction for a chapter in a psychology textbook. This book is explain about how to read by surveing and skimming and what should prepare before begin reading.

Background Rapid read is good ,but not good enough without supported by some

superspeeds method which is speeding by surveing and speeding by skimming. To improve students reading skill there is not just reading all the book,articles,chapters but we have to make the students interest to be a good reader by introducing them the methods or the simple way to read and understand the meaning of the sentences,pharagraph in every

books,chapters and articles. Reading skill is one of the most important in every people life. I n daily life reading is how we can get information by reading,in every school students learning by reading . and the important reason why reading is important is with reading we can understand the meaning of the sentences but we dont have to read all the b ook or all the chapters to get the point or the montaintop of the paper. There is some weakness to read, for example :

Students getting bored to read and they did not get the point Students are lazy to read

so that there is some methods to use in it. Surveing and skimming is the methods to make students that not interest in readiong skill become interest to increasing their raeding skill by surveing and skimming which is not take long time or very easy to read and make them comfort to read and become a go od reader.

THE MATERIAL

1.1.

Definition of Speeding by Surveing Surveing is a specialized technique for getting a montaintop of an articles,chapters,or entire book. With surveing students can catch a broad and overall the pictures. Speed through the material from tem to more than fifty times and more faster than with ordinary reading. That means the reader in this case students can survey more than fifty articles,chapters ,or entire books in the time it usually takes to read just one. To begin survei the books it is good to read the title and table of contents then read the material on the front,back and inside . then survei the chapter individually. Read chapter title, first paragraph, headings, italicized words, and last paragraph. To survey the articles before reading, the key words are all underlined. Just read all underlined words, starting with the title. Then come back to the top of the article and continue.with surveing student will have the essentials. Surveing also called as a reading expedito r and as a decision expeditor as sir Francis Bacon said some books are to bhe tasted,others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested.

Surveing as a reading expeditor

Students normally get out maps to see exactly what rute to school. Reading without an overview is much like traveling which is needs the maps. Surveing serves as a road map to read students will read more confidently and easily so when we know in general whwr the writers is going, we can follow more easily with surveing.

Surveing as a decision expeditor

Before reading we dont know which books belong where? And with the background, interest, problems and

spesificneeds best. A quick survey provides an ideal basis

for deciding intelligently wether to taste,swallow or chew t he digest. And surveing is the answer.

Definition of speeding by skimming The second superspeed to improving reading skill is surveing by skimming which is through print at three to five times the usual reading speed. And the secret is paragraph structure .with skimming which isr reading with word by word,read the underlined parts and skip the other two-thirds and then get the paragraph meaning without reading the paragraph but read the first and last sentences and the key words between. To skimming entire acticle or chapter do not skip the single paragraph, thats the differences, skim all the paragraphs except the first and the last.

Reading subtitute means deciding when to skim and when to read, keep the level of reading skill development in mind.

Reading as speed generator working to improve reading ability.even practice rapid read everyday with reading thirty minutes everyday.

That skim-read combination takes no more time than one slightly slower reading. First,comprehension should be better ; second , reading rate should be improved.

MEDIA

In every lecturer there is media to use , the media useful to increasing students to interest with one subject , then in reading skill espe cially reading by use the superspeed methods .

Newspaper,Fajar (sports information) Newspaer is one of the media to get the information around us and newspaper useful to improve surveing method to read like get the montaintop of the article by catch a broad and the pictures of the top topic in the sport article.

Books ,history books Book is very important media to improving reading skill and also practice with the books to increasing skimming method. For example read the first oaragraph of the chapter than get the point by skimming.

IV.

THE METHODS

The method the use is superspeeds method


y Speeding by surveing

Technique for getting montaintop view of an article or entires book by read chapter title, first paragraph , headings and last paragraph. Thats how surveing works.

Speeding by skimming

Skimming concentrates the reader attention on the meat of the paragraph-the important part. Read the first and the last sentences and find the key words. Thats how to skim a single, fairy long paragraph.

HOW THE MATERIALS WORK

Speeding by surveing

A survey functions much as an abstract. It compresses the essentials of a full-length chapter into a neat ,its mean more interesting

Speeding by skimming

Speeding by skimming as we know that a skimming method is more easily to do than usual reading methods in general. Furthermore , it is an easier and faster pattern to apply.

VI.

EVALUATION

An evaluation is one way to know how the methods work when it applyed to students reading class. By doung the evaluation, wich is invited students to determine what is the most important information they have got from articles,chapter ,or bookts the read by surveing and skimming. To do the evaluation, there is essesment to do : 1. Oral test Ask student how they get and what the information or the central point they got from reading by surveing and skimming. 2. The group reading activity (GRA) Devide the reading material into four, five, or six topic sections and the group should correspond to the number of topic sections estabilished.

3. Reading time

Allow time for students to read by superspeeds method and presentations to be finalized. Conduct full -class discussion for further clarification and research of project ideas. And the methods very useful to interest student to improve the ir reading skill in class to be agood reader.
