Comparison of Crystal and SSRS (Microsoft Reporting Services) in 5.0

Hello All, We're converting all of our existing Crystal Reports to SSRS reports as we move to 5.0. I was wondering if anyone had any information about changes the end-users should expect as we role this out. E.g., is there any speed difference the first time the user runs the report? Does SSRS handle parameters differently? Etc... Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Vincent Perniciaro

I'm not the ultimate expert in these matters but we semi-successfully went through the conversion process last year. The good news is that those annoying Crystal errors go away, the other news is that they get replaced with SQL reporting errors that are just as cryptic. I think, subjectively speaking, that SSRS is a little slower than Crystal though admittedly I haven't taken the time to prove it. The big loss, big for us at least, is that SSRS doesn't have a rich text translator, so our dictated reports (and reports from SIS?) are all still on Crystal (our pharmacy labels are also still on Crystal but that's the subject of another rant.) The fix ECLP has for rich text turns it into an image file and it breaks after a certain file size (if you like those AM calls from Medical Records like I do, you'll be feeling a little squeamish right about now.) Rich text is something that we've spent hundreds of hours trying to deal with and so far still use Crystal. All of the new stuff in 5.5 is really cool but if we get to 5.5 without a working rich text fix, I'm going to get resentful and move to Minneapolis or something. I'm just saying. I thought I had heard that SSRS reports ran slower than Crystal reports the first time a user ran them on a specific server, but I couldn't find anything to that effect. I've thought that I noticed it occuring myself, but I can not pin point anything down just yet. -Vinnie

We also are still using Crystal Reports for our documents reports. We had a lot of trouble with the report server locking up right after our conversion to SSRS (our server configuration has the Sunrise report services and SSRS on the same server; but that's all that's on that server). We were rebooting the server 2-3 times/week. Reports seemed to process slower through SSRS and reports with a lot of data just didn't process at all. Lots of 'insufficient memory' errors. Worked with Eclipsys for about 2 months, collecting data, changing this or that. We ended up having to add more RAM to the server (went from 4GB to GB) and changing the memory limit settings in SSRS. I still have to reboot the server once/week (before SSRS we were rebooting once/month), which says to me there's a memory leak somewhere, but at least we can get through the week without the server locking up. Since we have recently upgraded to SSRS2008, we have been sporadically encountering the following two errors: 1) "The Invalid handler Retry [1/1] " 2) "The remote server returned an error: (500) Internal Server Error " Have you seen any of these at your site? Thanks!

Many have been hotfixed since then. ID Title Issue Description SQL Reports will print and can be exported, but previewing produces a black screen. There is a SQL Server 2005 hotfix that addresses this issue. Case Number

Reporting services continue to fail with errors. Sometimes only Crystal reports are failing, while SQL Reports continue to print normally.

SQL Reporting error - "Stream cannot be found" & "report requires parameter Facility"

Running SQL Reports produces this error: The stream cannot be found. The stream identifier that is provided to an operation cannot be located in the report server database. ---> The stream cannot be found. SQL Reporting print issues - report requires 110 default or user-defined value for the report parameter Facillity.

All of the SQL Reports I have tested printing this afternoon are failing with this error (or some other parameter). They preview fine. Some of these I printed this morning without error.

ClientConnect: Comparison of Crystal and SSRS... After upgrade, clinicians who have 'report' view for document review, will be defaulted to 284 the the 'report' view by Document (new option). I sent email to Clindoc team to determine if this is an issue. Could it be handled with training/communication? PM found that it will actually default to the sort category below the one the user had prior.

Re: Comparison of Crystal and SSRS (Microsoft Reporting Services) in 5.0 I heard from Craig Krumbhaar of Eclipsys that it is really important to try to use SSRS 2008 if at all possible. We'll be upgrading to 5.0 this year and I hope we don't have the problems I've heard others have had.
