29 JULY 2011

A shopping mall...
The Tubatse Mall development officially broke ground on Friday, 22 July 2011. The 32000 square metre retail shopping mall, situated in the valley of the Spekboom River in the Greater Tubatse Local Municipality, will be developed by Abacus Asset Management. Abacus was also responsible for the highly successful Mooiriver Mall (mall of the year 2010) in Potchefstroom. The architectural design will be provided by Stauch Forster in Johannesburg and Murray and Roberts Construction will be responsible for constructing the greatly anticipated retail shopping centre. The planned opening date for the shopping centre is in April 2013. According to AAM Chairman, Jaco Odendaal, leading national retailers have shown confidence in the development and shoppers can look forward to a choice of 150 shops, boasting a well planned mixture of offerings. This will include South African favourites as well as original local stores and a variety of food offerings anchored by Pick n Pay. Burgersfort has become the hub of the mining expansion of platinum group minerals and the Tubatse Mall development is expected to add to the vital economic growth of the region. Odendaal predicts that between 800 and 1000 direct new job opportunities will be created during the construction phase and in excess of 1000 permanent and casual jobs will be created following the opening of Tubatse Mall. The developers say they value community involvement and have appointed community liaison officers and a BEE specialist to ensure that the agreed BEE and local procurement targets are met. A modern design, easy access to the site and 1000 parking bays will all add up to a new and exciting shopping experience for the people of Burgersfort and surrounding towns. GTM Mayor, Cllr Nkosi Josias Mahlake

Fltr: The three speakers who explained their various companies roles at the Spekboom Estate Development. Mr Jaco Odendaal (Abacus), Mr Tjaart van der Walt (Cranbrook), and Mr Malcolm Law (Curro Schools). The event was also attnded by local councillors, business people, community organisations and political and other interest groups in the area (bottom).

We welcome the development, make it happen - Mayor Mahlake

... houses and a school

On his part, Mr Tjaart van der Walt, speaking on behalf of Cranbrook Property Projects, told the audience the plan is is to make the town more attractive to the employees and executives of the scores of platinum and chrome mines in the vicinity, many of whom currently choose rather to live in Lydenburg, 60km away, or in the neighbouring towns of Steelpoort and Orighstad. Mr Van der Walt said part of this plan, he says, is the creation of beautiful new residential areas such as the Spekboom River Estate, which will ultimately contain more than 1800 of the 7500 new homes it is estimated that the town will need in the short to medium-term. He said although the whole 520ha Spekboom site will be secured, a large percentage of it will be left undeveloped or in greenbelts which will enable residents to enjoy the tranquility of the bushveld surroundings. Meanwhile the terrain will soon also be home to a new Curro school, one of a growing string of campuses across the country that offers affordable private schooling from pre-primary right up to Grade 12. The school is to be built on a 10ha site set aside by Cranbrook Property Projects adjacent to its Spekboom River Estate residential development just to the east of the old town centre and close to the new Tubatse Mall shopping centre. Construction of the first phase of the new Burgersfort campus will start within the next few weeks and the school will open its doors to the first pre-primary learners in January 2012, with other classes set to commence in January 2013. Mr Malcolm Law, representing Curro Schools, told the audience the vision of the Curro group is to provide affordable private education to learners across South Africa. This will be the groups second Limpopo campus - with the other being in Polokwane and its 12th school countrywide. Curro offers parallel medium education from Gr R to Gr 9 and dual medium from Gr 10 to 12 and it aims to fill the gap between public schools and expensive private education (around R5000 a month) which most parents cannot afford. At the moment Curro school fees average around R2000 a month, depending on the Grade.

EVRAZ Mapochs launches schools HIV programme

Steel and Vanadium producer, EVRAZ Highveld, has launched and is sponsoring through its Mapochs Mine at Roossenekal an unique HIV programme for primary schools. Launched last week Thursday in Roossenekal, the programme will be implemented at about 30 primary schools and entails that key teachers are trained to implement the programme at their schools. Only the senior classes in the schools will be targeted and teachers will receive comprehensive training and teaching materials to work with. Mapochs is not doing the the training themselves, but utilises a nongevernmental organisation to do the training. Left: Teachers listen attentively to EVRAZ Mapochs Community Officer, Daphne Nkosi (centre) during the launch. Top: The Roossenekal Recreation Hall was packed to capacity last week Thursday when EVRAZ Mapochs launched a HIV programme to be implemented at primary schools in the area. Teahers who are trained will not only be trained to educate learners about HIV, but they will also be supported throughout the ptrogramme to make sure that everything goes well. They will also be trained to train other teachers to take over the education of learners should it happen that they are no longer able to continue with their work. It was also explained to the large number of teachers who attended the launch that the programme not only makes privision for the education of learners, but will also encourage communication within families or groups about the prevalence and dangers of HIV.

OK MiniMark Burgersfort awarded as a top convenience store

OK MiniMark Burgersfort is not just another convenience store. Their commitment to excellence in all the aspects of running their store won them the prestigious title of best OK MiniMark store in the Northern division of the OK Franchise Division, a member of the Shoprite/Checkers group. OK MiniMark Burgersfort opened in June 2009. Managing director, Mr Vonnie Craffert started his journey in the retail industry 21 years ago, when he owned a small truck shop. Today he and his partner are highly successful retailers with two first-rate stores that serve the growing community of Burgersfort. When spending time with Vonnie one very quickly realises his absolute passion for people is a prominent driving force in his success. Our staff members are all like extended family, Vonnie explains. Thats the type of relationship we have with them. Vonnie also believes in recognising the people that play a role in your business. I have an exceptional management team who all share my passion for people and excellent customer service, and I am very thankful for that. Empowering people is another key factor in Vonnies strategy. I have the privilege of having had inspiring mentors in my life, and thats why I also believe in empowering people with skills and knowledge, helping them fulfill their potential. One of the assistant managers at OK MiniMark Burgersfort for example started out at his other store as a cashier, and he gave her the opportunity to grow in her role, proving Vonnie is man who puts his beliefs into practice. Every morning when I get up I tell myself: Im going to have fun today, says the man who embraces the long hours and hard work characteristic of the retail industry with much enthusiasm. Vonnie of course still has lots of challenges to deal with, but he simply believes in choosing not to be dreary when things are tough. He also appreciates the support he gets from his partner in the business. To ensure the nominees for this award are deserving of the honour, the OK Franchise Division has compiled a comprehensive list of criteria by which the stores are judged over the course of a year. This list includes growth, general store standards, customer service, service department offerings and displays, staff motivation, community involvement, administrative excel-lence and loyalty. The focus is therefore not on merely making sales the stores that come out on top after the judging process really are true examples of what retail excellence is all about. They have to show that they are serious about their customers (service and shopping experience), community and store appearance as well. OK MiniMark Burgersfort now stands in line for the national Franchisee of the Year Award as the best OK MiniMark store in the country, to be announced in September at the annual OKFD conference in Greece.

ECM assists with water Having a braai with the SAPS purification plant for Mampuru
A water Purification Plant was built and commissioned in Mampuru Village during 2010 by the District Municipality, but during the implementation phase a few difficulties and challenges were indentified and the project was delayed. Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines (ECM) decided to use the opportunity to assist the roleplayers, who included the Municipality and community, by providing the necessary capacity to complete the project. ECM arranged the COC (Certificate of Compliance), in order for Eskom to connect the power and replaced the non-return valve. ECM also did pipe modifications and replaced the DOL (Direct on line starter) and finally commissioned the plant. The formal handover took place on 15 July 2011. Present during the formal handover was Mr. Tseke Sekhukhune, Metallurgical Manager from ECM and Mr Ntsoane, Senior Manager of the Sekhukhune Water District. Mr. Ntsoane was impressed with the initiative taken by ECM and Mr Rampele, Site Manager of the Sekhukhune Water District and the Water Committee thanked ECM for making a difference in the Mampuru Community. We are proud to say that the co-operation and support that we receive for and on behalf of our clients who conduct business in the Tubatse Cluster is excellent. Over the years that we conduct business in the Eastern Limb and specifically from our Steelpoort Office, relationships developed and we have reached a stage that there is confidence to pick up a phone and ask for assistance and we get it, Ellence Monyela the Thorburn Operations Manager in Steelpoort commented.Scheepers praised the SA Police and the Thorburn managers for their role

during recent unrest situations in the area and urged all involved in the mining areas to execute their task with dignity and always talking human rights into account. Should it be public or private?

ANC Youth League president, Julius Malemas lifestyle and finances came under scrutiny this week after reports published in City Press on Sunday. On Saturday, Malema sought an urgent court interdict to prevent the newspaper from publishing its story about his finances, a family trust. This came after previous reports of Malema building a R16 million house in an upmarket Johannesburg suburb. The report also included a businessman claiming to have deposited R200 000 into Malemas family trust fund in exchange for a tender. Opposition parties have since called for the SA Revenue Service to launch an investigation into Malemas affairs. They claim that his lavish lifestyle is not compatible with his R25 000 a month salary. This week the Youth League lashed out at ABSA bank who they claim leaked confidential information regarding the trust, Malemas bond and vehicle finance. The Hawks on Tuesday received a docket after AfriForum laid a complaint against Malema in terms of the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act. It was handed to the commercial crimes unit who will decide whether to investigate it. We asked readers what they think about the whole issue.

Me.

Mnr. Koos Mnisi s: Hulle moet hom ondersoek. Kyk waar kry hy al daardie geld.

Mr. Crosby Masilela said: It is private. They must leave Julius Malema alone. I dont care where he gets his money.

Mr. Solly and Ms Theresa Skosana said: If he is guilty of nothing, let them search because they wont get anything and he will have nothing to fear. Investigate him and find out. He is also a businessman, so he might get profits from there. Right: Ms Jenny Steyn said: He must be investigated. He should not be bragging about what hes got.

Ms Annikie Moleke said: They must investigate him. Nothing is private for him. He is working for all South Africans and the community wants to know where he gets his money from. He wont be the first person to be investigated. If he did nothing wrong, why fear an investigation?

Mnr. Stephen en me. Marie Wessels s: As jy in so n leiersposisie soos hy is, moet jou besigheid deursigtig wees. As jy niks het om weg te steek nie is daar mos nie n probleem nie. Daar is baie honger kinders in hierdie land wie se geld reg bestee moet word. By hulle is Anneke en Monique Wessels.

Me. Angelique Grimmick s: Hy is n t openbare figuur om privaatheid te h. Die publiek het die reg om alles te weet. Hulle moet hom ondersoek.

Ms Mavis Matheba said: They must leave him alone. His finances is his private affairs. Regs: Mnr. Nico de Jonge s: Ek dink daar is korrupsie betrokke. Ek dink van die staat se geld gaan na die bou van sy huis ens. Hy moet definitief ondersoek word. By hom is Verencha. Links: Mnr. Johan Vogel s: Hulle moet ondersoek instel.

Ms Sabelo Kunene said: They must establish how much he earns per annum. They must investigate him like the Scorpions would have done before. He is working closely with government and he must be an example to the youth.

Buffels ran over Phalaborwa

They moved from number 7 on the league log to number 4
On Saturday, 23 July the Winterveld Buffels Rugby Club faced a team from Phalaborwa on their home territory. We started with the second leg of our Senior League this past Saturday. The Buffels hosted the event at the Winterveld Recreational clubs rugby field. They played against Phalaborwa and won convincingly 43-0 (26 0 half time) said Mr Charl van der Merwe. Once again, it was good, hard and clean rugby. We have moved from 7th place on the log, to the 4th place. Congratulations to our team! I wish Phalaborwa the best for the remaining of the league. I would like to invite you to come and attend our game against Loskop Rugby Club (Groblersdal) on Friday night, the 5th of August at approximately 19h30. This might be our last home game for the season, depending on how we perform during the remainder of the league. Entrance is free, there is a happy hour at the club prior to the game and specials on their meals. Come and enjoy an evening of sport, full of sports Thank you Frank Cotton from ECM for the Ambulance and Medics, Damion from Pick & Pay for the boerewors rolls, Jorge from Mopanie for the Poweraids and the Winterveld Recreational clubs management and staff for the clean change houses and warm meal afterwards. For the love of the game!

SPORT
This past weekend the very popular Foskor F21 or 21km charity fund raiser was held at Namakgale, Foskors community Center in Phalaborwa. Just over 1000 athletes lined up at the starting line to compete. Athletes were all hoping to win some of the R207,100. 00 that was on offer for the winners. The current mens race record stand behind the name of Ezeal Thlobo with a time of 1:01:55 which he ran in 1997. Elana Meyers record is still in place from 1999, this stands at 01:12:19. Modikwa again sent a very strong field of athletes with the likes of Peter Molapo and Leboka Noto.

Leboka Noto, a master of Foskor 21km

Leboka Noto (photograph top left) proved once again why he is a force to be reckoned with by winning the masters race for runners over the age of 40. This was the first race for the Modikwa athletes after Comrades, they used this race as a jump start for the coming City to City and Soweto races. This shorter distance is often more difficult to the long distance runners who did very well in the Comrades Marathon. Fanie Matshipa (bottom left), runnerup of the Comrades Marathon 2011, also kick-started his racing with this event. Congratulations to all the runners, we are very proud of their performance, Modikwa management said. Results from Modikwa Marathon Club is: Leboka Noto 01:08; Peter Molapo 01:17; Cedrick Mbuyane 01:24; Justice Phokane 01:27; Victor Maroge 01:37; Solomon Masedi 01:40; Jeffrey Nkune 01:42; Adolph Bosegho 01:53; Martin Riba 02:07; Portia Mabena 02:15.
