Likesomanyminiaturists,Peterfirstfoundhisway intothisworldasachild.Hewasanavidmodel railroader,kitandMeccanosetuserbuteventually lostinterestforanumberofyearstheusual reasons:university,sports,girlsnotnecessarilyin thatorder.Hegotinvolvedagainwhenhegot marriedandhadafamily.Peterbuilt2dollshouses fromscratchforhischildrenandseveralyearslater restartedhismodelrailroadmodelling. AtthetimePeterbuilttheseconddollhousehisjob (datasystemsconsulting)involvedalotoftravel 2700milecommutes(eachway)every2weeksor so,stayinginhotelsforweeksatatimeawayfrom home.Althoughheworkedforhimself,sothemoney wasgood,hewasnothavingmuchsatisfactionfrom thejobs;systemsworkcanbeveryephemeraland willalwaysbereplacedorthrownaway.Hewanted todosomethingthatwassatisfyingandmight

structures,furnitureandlights,primarilymodernand primarilybutnotexclusively1/12scale.Hestartedin 1998,decidingthatifhewasgoingtomakethe breakhehadtocommittoitcompletely,andhis wife,Jeremie,whoworksfulltimeasaMusic Therapist,wascompletelysupportiveofhismaking thechange.Ofcoursenowshealsohasafulltime resourcepersontohelpherwithherminiprojects.

So where does he find his inspiration?


Peterexplains:Whilesomeofmyworkis replicatingfullsizepiecesfromtheArts &Crafts,ArtDeco,andmodernperiods,a lotofmypiecesareofmyowndesign. Someresultfromplayingwithmaterials toseewhatcanbedonewiththem(for examplemylightsculptures)andothers seemtobedictatedbythepropertiesof thewoodIfind(forexamplethex diningtable).Ihavebuiltroomsthatare miniaturerepresentationsofarealroom, butmostofmymodernroomsare originalworks. Heresearcheshispiecesbyreadinglarge amountsofbooksandmagazinesaswell asinvestigatingfurnitureandhousing accessorystores.

Petersworkstandsout becauseheisoneofthe smallbandofartisans makingmodernminia turesforthecollector. Hehasbeenaninnova tor,makingreal,scale florescentlightfixtures fordollhouseminiatures about10yearsago.He firstusedLEDsfor lightinginroomboxes aroundthesametime whentheywerespecial orderitemsandcost about$8.00each,just fortheLED.

Petersaysmyfocusonmakingoriginaldesign piecesissomewhatunusual.Imightalso mentionthatIthinkIspecialiseintheleast populareraofminiaturesaswell,sothatmay saysomethingsignificantaboutmeaswell. Hisscaleofchoiceis1/12thbecauseofthe amountofdetailthatitispossibletocapturein miniaturesofthatsizeandmanythingsscale downwelltothatsize.Goingsmalleralways meansmorecompromisesarerequiredfrom him.Inaddition,heisquiteatallperson(61) withlessthantinyhandssothelargerscaleisa littleeasiertoworkwith.

Mostofhisitemsareoneofakind,whichisfun,but,hefeels,poorbusinesspracticeastherearenttoomany economiesofscaleinmakingoneoffs. Peterenjoysthechallengesoftryingtoworkwithnewmaterialsorwitholdmaterialsinnewways.Hecan (largely)determinehowwellthefinalproductturnsouts,arefreshingchangefromwewantcheapandwe wantitnow.Heisalsoveryawareoftherealworldbusinesscycleshavingnodoubtthatminiaturesarea discretionaryexpenditureaffectedbyarecedingeconomy.Hissalesaremademainlythroughhiswebsiteand someshowsashedoesnthavealineofgoods.BuyersneedtocontactPetertoseeifhehastheitemorwill makesomethingsimilar.Iusuallyincorporatesmalldifferencessoeachpieceisunique.Ionlydoalimited numberofbigshowsasIneedalargevolumeofpeopleattendingsoIcantryandcatchtheeyeofthe5% whoarenotallergictomodern.Heishappytotakecommissions. Lizhasbeenworkingintheminiatureindustryforabout12yearsnow.Herinvolvementcameby chancewhensheSawadollshouseinashopthatsoldotherthings,andhavinga3yrolddaughter, decidedtomakeherone.Livingonbenefitsatthetime,Lizgotbooksfromthelibraryandasheetof MDFfromB&Q!Subsequentlysomeonetoldmeaboutadollshousefair,andIdiscoveredawhole miniatureworld!

SincetheadventoftheinternetLizhasbeenableto reachamuchwideraudienceandELFMiniaturesnow haveclientsineverycontinent,fromRussiato America,SpaintoJapanandontoNewZealand, Braziltherearedollshousecollectorstheworldover! HersisterKateMantonrecentlyjoinedherinthe businessasshewasunabletocopesinglehandedany longer,andKatewaslookingforanewopportunity. Thesistersboughtahousetogether,sotheynowhave morespaceforexpansion.

Whilethevastnumberofclientsaredolls housecollectors,thereisgrowinginterestin miniaturedesign;these clientsoftendonthave ahouse,butcreatedioramas thattheyphotographs othatthe resultsareindistinguishable fromafullsizedscene. Theywillthendissemblethesetandrecreate somethingelse,combiningandrecombining itemsfromtheircollection.Inaddition,Liz alsomakesmodelsforusebyfilmand advertisingcompaniesELFfurniturewas recentlyseenintheOasisdrinksadverts,and hasfeaturedinadvertsforSony,Tescoand others. Lizhashadtocommissionanumberofpieces astherewereNOmodernsinks,taps,hobs etcwhenshefirstbegan. Shealsodevelopedherownjigstoenablehertoproducekits(likebuyinga flatpackkitchen.AndherIcouldntlivewithouttool?MyProxxonsaw.

Andwhataretheircreativeplansforthefuture?Lizexplains:Ihave recentlystartedtocreatein1:16scaleasthereisgrowinginterestinthis scalepartlyduetothelaunchofseveralultracontemporaryhousesin 1:16.IalsoplantoexpandtherangeofdesignerpiecesthatImake,and Iamalwaystryingtoinnovateandreflectthechangesbroughtaboutby advancesintechnologyinthefullsizedworld. muchofthenextgenerationhavegrownupin amoremodern/contemporarysocietythanI did.IfiguredthatifIbuiltit,theywould come. Thegradualdevelopmentofmoreandmore optionsformodern/ contemporaryminison themarkettodayhasled Richardtobranchinto, whatheconsiderssimilar genres:ArtDecoand FrankLloydWright inspiredpieces.Some whathumbly,he continues:Inaddition,I wouldsaymyskillsetand resultshaveimproved steadilyovertheyears.Ihavemuchtolearn butverymuchlookforwardtothechallenge.

Richardexplainedsomeofthespecial techniquesthathehashadtolearn,adaptor invent.Modern/contemporaryfurnitureshares manyelementsofconstructionwithtraditional furniture.However,manyelementsareunique tothemoderngenre.Findingsuitable materialstoreplicatethoseelementsor inventingthemhimselfhasbeenvery interesting.Iwillshareonefunnystoryabout atechniquethatIlearned.Forsomeofmy earlypiecesIfoundthatIneededtocreate somecurvedshapestosomePlexiglasina coffeetable.Aftersomeresearch,Idesigneda mouldofwood,covereditwithbakingpaper, positionedthePlexiglasoverthemouldand presentedmyselftomywifesoven.She nearlyhadaheartattackasshewatchedme meltplasticinheroven.Itallworkedout justfinebutshehasencouragedmetogetmy ownovenforfutureexperiments.

Afterawhileshewantedtothrowawaythe houseandfurniture.Haventweallhadthat experience!Nevergiveintoitjustseewhat Christahasachieved! Relenting,shestartedtocleanitout.The moreshelookedatitthemoreshewantedto tryandmakeitherownstyleoffurnishing,a totallydifferentstyle:aModernsomething

youcouldliveinnow.

Christamadefakewindowsinthebedroom, fromcardboard,aprintandclearacetate,and fakewallsalsofromcardboardinthebathroom. Christasaimwastomakeitlookabitmore aliveandwithalltheroomslookingdifferent.

Christadecidedtomakeitlookasrealisticas possibleandtomakemostoftheitemsher self. Theroomsinthehousewereallthesamewith windowsonlyinthefront.Shedidnothave thenervetosawthewoodofthehouse, afraidthewholehousewouldfallapart!

Thehousestartedtotakeonapersonalityas Christadevelopedoneroomatatimeandwhen finished,startedanewone.

Findingtheinspirationontheinternet, shestartedusinghercreativitywith materialssuchaswoodfromcigarboxes, fimo,printsfromtheinternet,wallpaper fromthesamplebooksinDIYshops, fabricfromcurtainsamplesandasome materialmetallicshades.Christa purchasedsomeobjectsliketheglass andthepotsinthekitchen,thetoilet andthebath.

Thetiredlittlehousehascomealong wayandblossomedintothefuture althoughChristastillhastomakethe livingroomandtheattic.

Alongthewayshebeganmoreprojects, andfounddifferentminiaturessheliked tomake:dolls,bears,flowers,aporch andeventuallystartedalittleinternet shop. So,saysChrista,thehousehasbeen shuffledtothebackabitbutonedayI willfinishit.Andfornow,Ienjoytherooms thatareready.

Welookforwardtofollowingtheprogress ofthislittlemoderngem.
