Having incubated Sunway University College to Sunway University in its 25 years of existence, Sunway College continues to make great strides ahead with its own great plans to expand and challenge new frontiers. Along with it, according to Elizabeth Lee, Executive Director, Sunway Education Group, is the possibility of setting up its own campuses in other parts of the world. brings you the story

Sunway College may not have continued to exist when it was first accorded University College status by the Ministry of Higher Education in 2004, and later, a full university early this year. Between 2004 and 2010, when it was still a university college, it had started offering its own undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, while running various pre-university and professional programmes. It maintained its twinning arrangement with Victoria University and continued to run the American Degree Transfer Programme, to enable students to spend the preparatory years in their undergraduate programmes locally and finishing their degree overseas.

Hence, as Sunway Education Groups Executive Director, Elizabeth Lee put it, Sunway Colleges existence is to meet a different set of expectations. While the University is able to stand on its own to offer its own Foundation, Diploma and Degree (Postgraduate and Undergraduate) UK university-validated programmes, and indulge itself in research and curriculum development, Sunway College provides a wide range of professional qualifications and internationally recognised pre-university programmes in collaboration with reputable international bodies such as ICAEW and ACCA. Sunway College will continue to offer Australian twinning programmes to students who prefer to complete their degrees in Malaysia. While the degree offered by Sunway University will be validated by a Top 10 UK university, Lancaster University, Sunway College graduates will graduate with a testamur from the foreign institution. Both are pathways to a good career in the corporate world, said Lee. In the process, students have more options to choose from. Whats more important is that they must know their career objectives.

But after Sunway became a full university in January this year, the need to continue operating Sunway College became a necessity.

Cover Story Our Story Sunway College started in 1986, when its founder, Tan Sri Dato Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah, AO decided that education will always be very close to the heart of Malaysian parents. The College started operating from a building in Petaling Jaya State New Town. Within a short span of time, Sunway College became a popular household name for quality private higher education. It had a number of twinning programmes with reputable universities from Australia and the United Kingdom. It was also the incubator to a Malaysian campus of Monash University from 1998 before Monashs new campus was set up within the same township. In 2009, Sunway University College became one of very few private higher education institutions in Malaysia to be rated Excellent in the first ever quality rating system in Malaysia the SETARA by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). With its excellent rating, quality delivery of teaching and learning, and significant contribution towards developing the nations workforce, Sunway University College was given the full-fledged university status and became Sunway University in January 2011. It is today a well-respected name in private higher education in Southeast Asia, drawing students from Indonesia, China, Vietnam, as well as the Middle-Eastern continent. Quarter of a century old now, Sunway College has indeed made great strides in the higher education scene in Malaysia. What particularly makes Sunway College attractive to employers, said Lee, is that its students have received numerous accolades that continue to make the College management and staff proud of their achievements. One of its students, Gan Fang Wen emerged Top in the World for Mathematics AS-Level. Fang has been accepted to pursue her studies in Medicine at Cambridge University. Two of its students, Kwong Sze Hui and Vivian Teh Qian Yuen topped the rest of the world in the December 2010 ICAEW ACA qualification examination and jointly took First Place. Tay Jun Yin, who is currently employed with Deloitte scored nine High Distinctions and eight Distinctions in the twinning programme with Victoria University. Besides being a high achiever, Tay is also actively involved in extra-curricular activities. This bagged him the coveted CIMB Bank ECA Achievers Award 2010. The former President of the Sunway CPA Australia Student Charter in 2010 also represented Sunway in Taekwondo and won the MAPCU Taekwondo championship in 2008. The list goes on. On the front cover of this edition of , A-Levels student, Lee Kin Wai is currently studying at Cambridge University. Lee scored the Highest Mark (joint) in the World for Mathematics at AS Level and the Second Highest Mark (joint) in the World for General Paper in the Cambridge Fellowship Awards 2010. Pre-university Studies At the pre-university studies level, Sunway College offers grade 12 or matriculation programme options from the UK, Australia and Canada. These pre-university programmes include: AUSMAT (Australian Matriculation) Cambridge GCE Advance Levels (A-Level) CIMP (Canadian International Matriculation Programme) MUFY (Monash University Foundation Year) Sunway FIA (Foundation in Arts) According to Cheng Mien Wee, Director, Pre-University Studies, the range of pre-university programmes has been carefully designed to suit the different learning preferences of students, and to prepare them to enter their university of choice.

We would ask them to consider either Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) or Certificate in Finance, Accounting and Business (CFAB) instead of going through the pre-university programme route, she added. These programmes are conducted by Sunway College through its subsidiary, Sunway-TES.

Cover Story Professional Accounting Programmes: The award-winning Sunway-TES offers programmes of study leading to the globally recognised ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountant) and CAT (Certified Accounting Technician) professional accounting qualifications, as well as the Certificate in Finance, Accounting and Business (CFAB) and the ACA qualification of the ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales). Its Executive Director, Teo Ee Sing said since Sunway-TES started in 1994, it has produced 96 world prize winners since 1996. A total of 2309 students have graduated with different professional qualifications. Many of them have climbed up the corporate ladder, he said. We are proud of their achievements. Learning does not end at convocations. Our alumni know that in order to keep abreast with the latest development in their profession, they have to continue to develop new skills. Elizabeth Lee, who has been with Sunway College since 1992, said although Sunway now has its own university offering home-grown programmes validated by Lancaster, a number of students still prefer to pursue twinning undergraduate and MBA programmes with foreign universities. For that reason, Sunway College will continue to develop in this direction. Twinning & MBA programmes Being one of the pioneers of the twinning and credit transfer programmes, Sunway College has offered many Malaysian and international students the opportunity of obtaining well recognised qualifications of foreign universities from the UK, Australia and the USA through studying at Sunway in Malaysia. Lee stressed: Our long history of partnership with Victoria University (VU) in Melbourne, Australia dates back to as far as 1994, where a strong academic partnership continues today, enabling us to offer the VU Bachelor of Business and MBA twinning programmes. These have become popular options that are well recognised by employers and industry. Sunway College also offers a range of well-established English language proficiency programmes that have been specifically designed to equip students with English language and communication skills necessary for academic success as well as employment and career development. Throughout its history, the College has provided holistic education and nurtured students to be critical thinkers and socially responsible citizens. Expansion Although its main campus is located at Bandar Sunway, Sunway College has a number of branches in other cities such as Johor Bahru, Ipoh and Kuching. There is no reason why the College cannot now replicate its success in other third world countries. Although we have not ventured aggressively overseas, whenever the opportunities are there, we will definitely explore and replicate our success in these countries, she said. Gerald Tan Lye Sern was one of the top students who scored an average mark of 90% and received a full scholarship to continue his undergraduate studies at Sunway University under the Tan Sri Dato Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah Continuing Scholarship. Tan Wei Chun, Goh Zi Dong and Khoo Jun Hao were the other high scorers in the same category as Gerald. More than 70% of the students received the Tan Sri Dato Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah Continuing Scholarship to pursue their undergraduate studies. 25 students who had average marks of 80% to 84.9% received the 75% tuition fee waiver scholarship award. FIA also recognised and appreciated students who were active in co-curricular activities. WHAT an experience!
H
omestay has always enchanted tourists for many years. From April 15 to 17, Sunway College students had the opportunity to participate in a homestay programme at Air Manis Homestay in Sabak Bernam.
The journey of this not-to-be-missed experience started with a plan to stage a traditional wedding ceremony. But, events took its turn and Sajid got himself a new bride after meeting a young lady from University of Malaya. Sajid, our international student from Afghanistan was supposed to have taken a fellow student from Thailand as his wife. The entire mock-up of a Malay wedding was the climax of the homestay, where 30 of our international students, accompanied by three staff from the International Student Office, lived with the local host families to experience and appreciate the traditional aspects of village lifestyle. The host families were generally friendly and had provided good hospitality, with both host and participants showing great mutual respect and positive attitudes towards each other. The activities organised included batik crafting, canoeing, gamelan performance, traditional dance performance, playing traditional games (congkak, hitting the bee hives, sandal fighting, kite flying and learning to weave ketupat.) Participants found the homestay programme at Air Manis was both beneficial and meaningful. We would like to recommend the programme to other international students, remarked Sajid.

Besides being a recipient of The Star Education Fund scholarship, Kok, who is currently employed by KPMG in Singapore, was also a recipient of the Tan Sri Dato Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah Scholastic Award in 2010. Another achiever, Tay Jun Yin, President of the Sunway CPA Australia Student Charter in 2010 was the CIMB Bank ECA Achievers Award 2010 recipient for his active involvement in Extra-Curricular Activities. He also represented Sunway in Taekwondo and won the MAPCU Taekwondo championship in 2008. Tay scored nine High Distinctions and eight Distinctions. He is currently employed with Deloitte.

There were many exemplary students at the Graduation Ceremony. Amongst them, Joyce Wong Su Ting who was the President of the Sunway Student Council 2010 was also a CIMB Bank ECA Achiever Award recipient. Ng Mun Foong who was the President of VU Business Club in 2009 is currently employed with Bloomberg. Ng Chin Peng, another Star Education Fund scholar, is employed by Maybank Investment Bank. Jimmy Goh Tzun-Foo, a Sin Chew Daily Education Fund recipient is with OSK Investment Bank and Liew Jun Keen, an NST MAPCU scholar is with Sunway City. These scholarships or awards were jointly funded by the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation and Victoria University. The Graduation Ceremony also saw Betty Lai, Director of Human Resources cum Facilities of Sunway Education Group, among the proud graduates receiving her Victoria University MBA scroll offered at Sunway from Chancellor, George Pappas. hen two SunwayTES students, Kwong Sze Hui and Vivian Teh Qian Yuen topped the world in the December 2010 ICAEW ACA qualification examination and jointly took on First Place, they were simply thrilled.
I did not expect to be the top scorer in the Financial Accounting paper since ICAEW examination is tough and all the candidates are very good, said Teh. However, like most students, I did my best.

Like Teh, Kwong attributed her success to the high level of commitment shown by Ruzlena Ahmad, a Financial Accounting lecturer, who has been using mind mapping to help her students understand a whole chapter. She has helped us see a clearer syllabus linkage, said Kwong. I chose ICAEW ACA because it is a prestigious accountancy qualification that does not only provide a solid foundation in accountancy, business and finance, but also helps to enhance my analytical skills, Teh said. Kwong concurred: Yes, the ICAEW provides a wide perspective of the business world, ranging from accounting to audit, tax, law, business strategy, all of which are useful in the work environment. An Li Fong, 23, another Sunway-TES student, who bagged the First prize in Audit and Assurance in the June 2010 examination (featured in blaze March edition), and both Kwong and Teh attended the annual ACA Prize Giving Ceremony in London in May this year, courtesy of BDO, ICAEW and Sunway-TES, who jointly sponsored their air tickets and accommodation. Executive Director of Sunway-TES, Teo Ee Sing said Sunway-TES has always been in the forefront producing world-class accountants. We will continue with our tradition as an institution of educational excellence and strive to produce award winning graduates, who will help to raise the accounting standards in this country, he said.

Fang Wen was Top in the World for Mathematics AS-Level. She also bagged the second placing in Malaysia for Best across Four Cambridge International AS-Levels and secured third place in Malaysia for Best across Three Cambridge International A-Levels. She has been accepted to pursue her studies in Medicine at Cambridge University. Iulia Gherman, who hails from Romania, emerged Top in the World for Mathematics AS-Level and was awarded second placing in Malaysia for the Best Across Five Cambridge International AS-Levels as well as third placing in Malaysia for the Best Across Four Cambridge International A-Levels. She will be heading to Imperial College, London to pursue her undergraduate studies in Biochemistry. They were among the ten Sunway A-level students who were the worlds top when they won a total of 16 Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards from the Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) recently. This is the largest haul of awards in one ceremony for the programme.

Other Sunway students who emerged Top in the World for Mathematics AS-Levels were Ang Hui Inn, Darren Soh Ningyuan, Muhammad Siddiq Foong bin Mohammad Faiz Foong and Nur Dzafirah Binti Kamaruddin. Nur Dzafirah was awarded second placing in Malaysia for Best across Three Cambridge International AS-Level. Jacqueline Liu Xing Yi was top in the world for Psychology at AS-Level, whereas Charmaine Leong Sook Yee topped the world for Mathematics and topped Malaysia for Biology at A-Level. Her coursemates, Lee Kin Wai was top in the world Mathematics while Leong Yean Long topped the world in Further Mathematics at the A-Levels. Lee Kin Wai is currently at Cambridge University. In addition to the impressive string of CIE awards garnered, 25% of Sunways A-level students scored straight As and 100% of students successfully completed the A-level programme, reflecting the high quality of the A-Levels programme in Sunway.

The trip, organized by the Language and Compulsory Subjects Centre (LCSC) of Sunway College, was held to enable students to learn more about the role played by the late Tunku Abdul Rahman and his effort of bringing independence to this country. The students were also required to carry out a research project as part of the Malaysian studies project on the countrys first prime minister, in an effort to instill national patriotism and historical values in the hearts of the students. They learnt about the Tunkus contribution to the nation, his challenges in forging unity in order to achieve independence, his early life, vision and mission, integration of communities in Malaya, and the saddest moment in history the May 13, 1969 racial riots. The trip turned out to be exciting, educational and informative.

Dr Anne Mullen, the tutor for Admissions in Humanities and Social Science subjects, led the team of tutors to Sunway College to educate the students and the public on the programmes available at Oxford. Also present were Dr Martin Speight, tutor in Biology and Dr John Murphy, tutor in Material Science.

Dr Speight managed to draw the attention of many pre-university students who listened intensely to his information session on biological sciences, as well as other life sciences such as medicine, biomedical sciences, biochemistry, experimental psychology, human sciences, and geography. He also demonstrated the different interviewing techniques used by Oxford to test the responses of potential students.

Dr Murphy, a tutor in Material Science as well as Physical Science, briefed the students on the two disciplines of study and highlighted the latest developments in research in these two areas. Sunway College students and their parents, particularly from the A-Levels and Australian Matriculation programme, as well as the general public found this information session valuable.

During the visit, they managed to socialise and had fun with the students. They also organised activities for the students that allowed them to experience a sense of individual achievement and helped to further build their self-esteem.

Although the project was done as part of a Moral Studies assignment, it turned out the GOLD project had a huge impact on the participants themselves: the sheer determination shown by members of GOLD in trying out new skills despite their autism was simply inspiring! This project has provided the Band-Aid members with an opportunity to get involved in the community through meaningful work. It has also allowed the members to develop skills which will be invaluable in their future endeavours, such as those of organisation, communication, planning, and leadership. First ever Taekwondo Annual Dinner

total of 110 Tae Kwon Do Club members from Sunway College and Sunway University, Monash University, APIIT/ UCTI, Taylors University and SEGi College attended Tae Kwon Do Night organized by Sunway Tae Kwon Do Club. The event, themed, The Golden Globe saw many performances by talented students, which included Malaysias Top Female Beatboxer, Kim Sng; recent Champion of Popping Battle DVol Soul Session 2011, Luke a.k.a. Groundwalker; Sunways very Lee Hao Seng (left) ACCA student and President of Sunways Tae Kwon Do Club own talented dancers, the Sofakes Crew receiving a Peoples Choice Award from from Ravelution; Jalaluddin bin HJ Zakaria, President of Tae a unique tricking Kwon Do Kuala Lumpur performance by Kuntaw Fatakie, and a band that performed a duet. A number of awards were given away, which included the Event of The Year award, which went to Monash University, and the High Achievers award which was bagged by APIIT/UCTI. Roger Ng of Sunway and Naza of APIIT/UCTI were both awarded Best President for year 2009 and 2010, respectively. Among the generous sponsors for the event were the Kuala Lumpur Tae Kwon Do Club (KLTC), Red Bull, and LH Engineering and Machinery Sdn. Bhd.
