Course Title
Ecology, Evolution, and Biodiversity

Course Description
Biology 1 is a two-unit introductory course offered to second year students that meets daily. The subject tackles concepts in Ecology, Evolution, and the Diversity of Organisms, and incorporates Biology as a discipline, the scientific method, and various life sciences that can be encountered along the way.

Grading System:
As with all other subjects, quarter grades are cumulative, such that from the 2 nd quarter onwards, the value of the quarter grade is computed as follows: Quarter Grade = (1/3) (previous final grade) + (2/3) (current tentative grade)

Biology1Tentative Grade per Quarter is computed as follows:

Only a maximum of 2 long exams per day and a maximum of 8 major requirements per week are allowed for all subjects!

A. Laboratory Activities At least one (1) lab activity (group work) per quarter Lab groupings: Three (3) persons per group (with at least one (1) extern) ; Each group should keep and maintain a shoebox with the following materials: 70% rubbing/ethy alcohol permanent marker pens rags (2 pieces) old newspaper (black/blue and red) transparent tape (1/2-in. wide scissors tissue paper /toilet paper roll masking tape (1-inch wide) detergent germicidal hand soap The shoebox must be labeled with the following: (1) section, (2) group number, (3) group members and corresponding class number of each . Shoeboxes are kept in each sections assigned locker in Rm 109. Make two (2) piles: groups 1-5 and groups 6-10, where groups 1&6 are placed at the bottom and groups 5&10 on top, respectively B. Laboratory Reports/Worksheets Each lab activity is accompanied by an individual written report (focuses on writing skills) and a group worksheet (summarizes data, includes answers to guide questions). Submissions past the deadline (even just seconds or minutes after) will be given a grade of ZERO. No exceptions. C. Laboratory Rules Read the handouts ahead of time. Lab performance is part of your Activities grade. Thus, do not be late for lab work, and refrain from leaving the room during the activity. Always wear a protective lab. gown, unless otherwise stated. No lab. gown will be marked Not in uniform on the attendance sheet. Absolutely no eating or drinking during lab activities. No make-up session for lab activities. D. Practical Examination At least once per school year Move-type, station-based exam involving actual specimens and/or tasks to be performed under a strict time limit Absences are highly discouraged E. Projects At least once per semester Individual or group work Includes the YMSAT Integrated Project during the 4th quarter, which will be credited for Biology 1 and other participating subjects Submissions past the specified deadline (even just seconds or minutes after) will be given a grade of ZERO. Recitation, SW/HW, Notebook (20%)


A. Recitation (8%): 40 pts will be awarded to the student(s) with the highest frequency of recitation; the rest of the class will be graded accordingly. Recitation quizzes on topics assigned may or may not be announced. B. Seatwork/Homework (8%): Short activities that may be assigned to be done during class hours or at home. C. Notebook (4%) 20 pts points for complete notes (with discussion notes) and possible bonus point(s) for neat and wellorganized notes with additional/reading notes. Unannounced spot checks are made aside from regular collection of notebooks sometime mid-quarter (unannounced) and right after the Biology Periodic Exam. Submissions past the deadline (even seconds or minutes after) will be given a grade of ZERO. No exceptions. If the student obtains a grade of 1.75 or better, the notebook need not be submitted anymore for the succeeding quarter.

Class Policies
1. Code of Conduct A. Cheating, or any form of academic dishonesty, will be sanctioned in accordance with the PSHS Code of Conduct. B. Maintain cleanliness and orderliness in the classroom at all times. The entire class will be held responsible for any violation with corresponding demerit/s)in recitation score. C. Use the backdoor for Entrance and the front door for Exit. 2. Requirements and Deadlines A. Submissions past the deadline (even seconds or minutes after) will be given a grade of ZERO. No exceptions. B. All requirements must be done in your own handwriting unless otherwise stated by the teacher. 3. Technology Mobile phones must be TURNED OFF or put in SILENT MODE during class. Calls may be received outside of the classroom. Portable music and/or gaming devices and similar gadgets must not be used during classes. 6.
