a place to dream and to reflect

a place of natural purity and timeless tranquility

the island
Situated near the top of the Lesser Antilles archipelago about 200 miles south of Puerto Rico, just west of Antigua and a few miles from St. Barts measuring only seven miles long and five miles wide, Nevis is one of the great unspoilt places, richly deserving its nickname Queen of the Caribees. This calm, lush island paradise with its year-round warm sun tempered by gentle, cooling breezes provides ample opportunities for hiking, exploring the lush rainforest, snorkeling or simply relaxing on its white sandy beaches. And relaxing is easy on one of the most welcoming of all Caribbean islands. As the Nevisians say Youre only a stranger here once.

Nisbet Plantation

the perfect retreat

Archaeology shows that Nevis has been inhabited for over 2,000 years, being visited by successive waves of Indian peoples most of whom were originally native to Central America. In the centuries that followed, the island experienced turbulent times. Yet it has always been the tranquility, beauty and friendliness of the place that shone through. Today, it is one of the most peaceful of all Caribbean islands, with a democratic government, independent judiciary, a free press and one of the highest literacy rates in the Western hemisphere. It is that rarest of things: a place where happiness and relaxation come naturally.

a brief history of the Queen of the Caribbees

Nevis was first thought to have been inhabited over 2,000 years ago by indians native to Central America, followed by Arawak indians from the basin of the Orinoco River (now Venezuela). Some centuries after the Arawak around AD1200 Carib indians became the next civilization to put down roots here. Today, archaeological sites across the island have unearthed pottery, shells and flint tools all dating to these early islanders. It is thought that at around AD800 Nevis may have had a population of 5,000. Nevis entered European history in 1493 when on his second voyage Columbus thought the clouds gathering on the peak were reminiscent of the catholic miracle of Nuestra Seora de las Nieves (Our Lady of the Snows). He did not, however, step ashore. The earliest European visitor is thought to have been Captain Bartholomew Gilbert in 1603, but Nevis was not officially settled by the British until 1628. Initially, its success was based in tobacco, but like St. Kitts, this focus shifted onto sugar cane production, and its wealth continued to grow. By 1660, it had become the most profitable per head of all British colonies. This, and its great natural beauty, made Nevis a target for other European nations, and thus began two hundred years in which the Spanish, French and Dutch all sought to rest control from Britain. The first half of the 20th century saw the decline of the sugar industry; the great estates were abandoned, and while some mills continued to be operated into the latter half, the last mill ceased operations in 1958. Critically, the Moyne commission of the 1930s found that Britain had a duty to support the island; improved sanitation and education were two key results. In the 1960s, Britain established the Federation of St Kitts, Nevis and Anguilla; which had limited self-governance, St Kitts and Nevis were granted full independence in 1983. Since then, a stable democratic government and independent judiciary has flourished making Nevis one of the most attractive islands in the Caribbean to visit and own a home in.

about the island

Roughly circular and measuring only 9 x 12 km in diameter, Nevis covers an area of approximately 93 square km. With a population of only 12,000, it lies in the heart of the Caribbean, its famous neighbours include Antigua and St. Barts. It is dominated by Mount Nevis, and with its natural rain forest enjoys a lush topography. With year round temperatures rarely exceeding 85/30 degrees, it has a perfect island climate. The Nevisian people are very friendly, well-educated, church-going and highly skilled. Nevis remains one of the safest Islands in the Caribbean. The discerning visitor is extremely well catered-for. World renowned places to stay include the Four Seasons Nevis Resort, Nisbet Plantation Beach Club and Montpellier Plantation Inn, and their presence has brought significant enhancements to the quality of life and to the island infrastructure including an improved road network and airport without compromising local charm and traditions. The Administration is committed to protecting the island from unsympathetic overdevelopment, and in 2011 is due to complete a geothermal power station that will make Nevis 100% energy self-sufficient.

the resort
Aman is a name trusted the world over and one synonymous with luxury and style. It is this dedication to excellence that has helped create the secluded and private Aman Nevis resort, with its 40 spacious and innovative private villas, each one of which is staffed by a housekeeper and cook, with sea views, swimming pools and tropical gardens. Villas will each occupy 2 acres or more within the 350 acre private Estate. Of course, luxury is not confined to your own villa. Within the resort literally on your doorstep youll find a host of facilities built to the same high standards, specially designed to harmonise with their surroundings; discrete, but always within reach. The Aman Resort hotel is located in the heart of Aman Nevis which will offer suberb views across the expansive lush lawns towards the beach and blue waters of the Caribbean. In the spa, natural and healing therapies will be offered in luxurious treatment villas, each designed to form a soothing natural environment. The restaurant, bar and beach club provide the perfect place to meet, socialise and sample the finest quality, locally-sourced cuisine. To complete the picture, the surroundings are tastefully landscaped using natural boulders from the island and over 5,000 newly planted palm trees. It is perfection realised.

the site
Situated at the foot of Nevis Peak and occupying one of the most spectacular and privileged positions on the eastern coast of Nevis sits one of the few remaining virgin development sites, on the sea. Breathtaking ocean views towards the island of Montserrat, and across its three kilometre beachfront it enjoys gently sloping topography which will offer each dwelling uninterrupted sea views. In order to attain the highest international standards of quality and design, Aman has engaged the services of celebrated master planner and architect par excellence, Jean-Michel Gathy of Denniston International, known across the world for his unique design and bespoke luxury.

the masterplan
The Masterplan of the new Aman Nevis Resort covers over 350 acres of pristine, untouched virgin beachfront on the Atlantic side of the Island, only 15 minutes from the airport. This plan highlights all the main features of the resort; the little black crosses represent over 5,000 newly planted mature palm trees that will create a lush plantation covering the whole resort. Jean-Michel Gathy used the same concept for his brilliantly received Rheeti Rah resort in the Maldives. (please view this at www.denniston.com.my) Clustered around the main lodge with its reception and lounge areas, bar restaurant and library are the 40 hotel guest pavilions, all of which have views to the sea, and are individual compounds each measuring over 260 sq. metres (c. 2,500 sq.ft ). Each guest accommodation has its own private 12 metre swimming pool, dining Sala, and garden The 40 private villas are located all around the resort, each within its own sea view garden which covers a minimum of 2 acres ; some close to the beach, some set back and elevated, but all are a short buggy ride from the main lodge, spa, beach club and 2 floodlit tennis courts. Getting around the resort is by golf buggy and each villa has 2 buggies that are included with every turn key villa The beach club has a casual restaurant and the glassed in gym faces the sea The hillside spa compound is a private enclave of over 12,000 sq.feet and has commanding views over the whole Resort and across to Monserrat

The Hotel In addition to extensive lounge areas, the restaurant and bar, the hotel has a library, boutique, screening room, fitness centre and tennis courts. Positioned at a focal point within the estate it looks down a cleared avenue of trees stretching to the beach. The hotel accommodation will comprise just 40 private pavilion rooms, each measuring over 70 sqm each with its own private 12m swimming pool, terracing and private gardens extending to approximately 260 sqm. All will have wonderful views of the sea. The Spa The estate will have a spectacular Spa perched on an escarpment at the western edge of the resort, with dramatic views towards the sea with Montserrat in the distance. The Beach Club The beach club will have a bar restaurant and gym at the waters edge. The Villas Please see the master zoning plan which highlights the location of each of the 40 villas. Each villa can vary between 4-6 bedrooms and owners can alter the configuration to include a screening room and or private gym instead of having one of the extra bedrooms. All villas come fully furnished. Owners may choose their own furnishings but if they do so, they will not be eligible to enter the rental programme.

Aman Villa inspiration

I was very excited when Adrian first approached me to develop a totally unique concept for Aman Nevis. When I first set eyes on the stunning location and discovered the islands culture - I was instantly inspired.
Jean-Michel Gathy

Jean-Michels concept for this exceptional resort explores Nevis Islands rich history and sugar plantation heritage. Introducing indigenous woods and stones, his design forms a modern masterpiece that blends into the traditions of Caribbean Island life and provides guests with spacious, innovative, modern luxury within a secure and private environment. The villa project aims at providing its residents with all the facilities a hotel offers with the addition of ones own Aman-trained personal housekeeper and cook. In addition to this, all homeowners will enjoy full membership of the tennis and beach clubs. The Amanresorts will manage all the Villas.
