August 3, 2011

Seventy-two recently graduated high school football players from New Hampshire and Vermont arrived on the campus of Kimball Union Academy last week to begin preparation for the 58th Annual Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl. The summer classic is set for Saturday, August 6 in Windsor, Vermont This is the fourth year that KUA has hosted the Shrine football teams and the schools close proximity to Windsor and the availability of both natural and artificial turf make it an ideal location. New Hampshire leads the overall series 42-132, including last years 34-20 victory over Vermont. But the Vermonters, led by head coach Jim Provost from Champlain Valley, hope that this will be their year as the game moves across the Connecticut River for only the fifth time in Bowl Game history. Central Vermont residents participating in the

game include Brandon Ducey and Adam Reed from Spaulding High School, and Jesse Burke from U-32 High School. Preceding the bowl game there will be a spectacular parade through the streets of Windsor featuring over 3,000 marchers. The parade is scheduled for noon and in addition to units from seven Shrine Centers in the Northeast, there will be an appearance by the Shrine All Star High Band, made up of nearly 100 high school musicians from 20 high schools in NH and VT, Kick-off for the Football game is set for 2:30pm on Saturday. Tickets for the game are $8 in advance and $10 on game day. There is also reserved seating for $20 and these can be obtained from any of the ticket outlets throughout New Hampshire and Vermont. For more information, contact the Shrine Bowl Football office in Lebanon at (603) 448-1042.

with Steve Poulin Rumors, Ramblings & Racing: with Steve Poulin At Riverside Speedways 2-day Summerfest 2011 Cory Mason took combined finishes of 1st and 6th to win the 2-day twin combined 75-lap Late Model title. Brett Gervais won Sundays 75-lap feature but finished an unofficial fourth in the combined results. Brother Bryan Mason finished second combined and Paul Schartner III lived up to his name for a combined third. In the 40-Lap Angels feature a very emotional Shawna Whitcomb dedicated the win to Jake McDowell whose namesake is the essence of the weekend. Taking the 2-day combined title for the Outlaws in twin 50 lappers was current point leader Chandler Davis. Jeff Taylor came out on top of a race long swap-the- lead battle with Wayne Helliwell Jr. at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway on Saturday night to claim his first career ACT Late Model win in the Beech Ridge 150. Taylor and Helliwell, both driving Fords, swapped the lead seven times from lap 44 to the checkers the whole time battling heavy lap traffic that saw just eleven cars finish on the lead lap. The event featured only three caution periods and ran in one hour and two minutes with Helliwell having the advantage on restarts and Taylor having the better car on the long runs. Taylor finally moved into the top position with 11 laps to go to take the win. Helliwell hung on to finish second followed by Randy Potter, who picked up his third consecutive topthree ACT finish. Jeffrey Labreque earned a season high fourth and sophomore driver Austin Theriault rounded out the top-five. Tour point leader Brian Hoar finished sixth. Taylor joins Hoar, Nick Sweet, Patrick Laperle, John Donahue, Daniel Descoste, Jeff White, Patrick Hamel, Alex Labbe, Donald Theetge and Kyle Busch on the list of invitees for ACT III Invitational at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Saturday September 24. Paul Menard became NASCAR s newest first-time winner Sunday; holding off Jeff Gordon for the win while keeping a watchful eye on his fuel pressure gauge in the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The first half of the race belonged to the guys with the fastest cars but as cautions meddled pit stops the race was a battle of wits and strategy. Menard and crew chief Slugger Labbe even played it one step further when Menard gave up the lead to defending race champion Jamie McMurray in an effort to save precious fuel. Given the green light with three to go by Labbe; Menard slipped back by McMurray and cruised to the win ahead of a fast closing Jeff Gordon. Menard fist career win came in his 167th start. Menards billionaire father, who has suffered heartbreaks at Indy as a car owner in the Indianapolis 500 was near tears. Ive been waiting to kiss these bricks for a long time. Im ready, John Menard said. Gordon settled for second and first time career winner at Darlington earlier in the season Regan Smith finished third. Jamie McMurray searching for his first 2011 win finished fourth with Matt Kenseth rounding out the top five. The win put Menard in contention for a wild-card selection for the 2011 Chase for the Sprint Cup as it jumped him 5 spots in the standings to 14th. The final two spots in the Chase will go to drivers with a win ranked 11th or lower. Currently Denny Hamlin ranked 11th and Menard would fill those two positions. Dan Douville earned his first Bear Ridge Speedway win of the season on Saturday night with a dominate performance in the 25lap Sprint Car of New England feature. Douville started 12th in the eighteen car field and busted through to the front, passing rookie Will Hull for the lead on Lap 9. SCoNE point leader Chris Donnelly followed Douville from his 13th starting position to take the runner-up spot. Rookie

runner, Tyler Rich finished a career-best third. Twenty -three cars attempted to qualify for the main event, an all-time Sprint Car of New England record. In other feature action Dan Eastman took top honors and his first victory of the season in the DIRTcar Sportsman Modified feature. Gene Pierson Jr. made it number five for the season in the Wells River Chevrolet Sportsman Coupe main and Ray Johnson scored his first career win in the A Notch Above Automotive Limited Late Model feature. A flat tire and the resulting spin turned out to be one of the biggest breaks of the Camping World Series driver Timothy Peters career in Friday nights AAA Insurance 200 at Lucas Oil Raceway. The flat that occurred just before the halfway point allowed his crew to improve his trucks handling and paved the way for Peters to take over the race lead with six laps to go. Thats what saved our night right there, Peters said. Once up front Peters cruised on for his first win of the 2011 season and the third of his career. The truck he passed belonged to James Buescher who led from just past the halfway mark until being over taken by Peters. Buescher, 21, finished second and was pushing for his first career victory in his 60th start. Its definitely frustration when you lose the lead that late, said Buescher, who led a race-high 97 laps. Cant get any closer to a win than that, but we had nothing for him. David Starr was third, his first top five since October 2009 at Talladega. Rookie Miguel Paludo finished fourth and Ron Hornaday Jr. was fifth. The race was a record for the fewest cautions-four-for a truck race at the .686-mile track. The second caution, for 17 of the 28 laps run under yellow, was for rain. Points leader Johnny Sauter also suffered a cut tire and finished third. Sauter, who started the race leading the standings by 18 points over Austin Dillon, had led 44 laps. Dillon, who tangled late in the race with Todd Bodine, led 36 laps and closed to with-in four points of Sauter in the points race. Northfields Matt White battled a four caution WDEV/Calkins Portable Toilet 50 Lap feature Thursday night to earn his fourth career Thunder Road Late Model win. White, who started the event in third held off Mike Bailey for the win. Lt. Governor Phil Scott came from fourteenth to finish third ahead of Chris Michaud in fourth and pre-race second place point man Dave Pembroke in fifth. Pre-race Point leader John Donahue settled for a 12th while third place point man Nick Sweet finished 24th after an early race wreck. But when the dust settled Donahue and Pembroke were tied for the 2011 Thunder Road King of the Road title with just three point counting events left on the schedule. Donahue is shooting for his first hilltop title while Pembroke is gunning for his second. Two-time Bond Auto Tiger Sportsmen champion Shawn Fleury of Middlesex took his 12th career feature checkered flag moving the talented driver to second on the Tiger Sportsman all-time win list. In the Allen Street Stock feature, Kyle Streeter held off a host of veterans to earn his first career win. Bad Brad Keselowski is back as the defending series champion used a bit of mayhem late in the race to score his second victory of the season in Saturday nights Kroger 200 Nationwide Series race at Lucas Oil raceway. Keselowski, anon-factor through the middle portion of a typically calm, droning, unremarkable race at the .686-mile track, slammed ahead of Ricky Stenhouse Jr. on a green-white-checkered restart and cruised to a .977-second victory. The race went four laps beyond its scheduled 200. The battle for second was so close that NASCAR officials had to review video. Several minutes after the race ended, second place was taken from Stenhouse and given to James Buescher, who had finished second in Friday nights Camping World Truck Series race. Stenhouse, who led a race-high 189 laps, moved into fist place in the standings- three points ahead of Reed Sorenson, who started the night as the points leader and finished ninth. What Theyre Saying Its cool to be back here at Indy. Havent got to go home, but at least were close. I spend a lot of time here in Indianapolis. This is obviously a

place thats special to us from the race standpoint and the facility. Its the kickoff of the Sprint Showdown, too, which is really cool. A driver and a fan has a chance to win $1 million (at Atlanta if they qualify by winning one of the races between now and then). Thats something that us drivers -- we never need too many incentives, we always want to race for the trophy, but to race for our foundation is something we want to strive for, too (a third million-dollar payoff goes to the charity of the winning drivers choice), pretty excited about it.- Tony Stewart on Indy and the Sprint Summer Showdown Next Lap The Sprint Cup Series rolls into Poconos 2.5mile Roval for the second time this season for the 38th Annual Good Sam RV 500 on Sunday August 7, (ESPN 12:00 p.m.). Greg Biffle is the defending race champion coming from a twelfth place starting to lead three times for 28 laps in 2010. Tony Stewart was the 2010 runner-up and defending pole sitter. ACT teams have a week off before heading to New Hampshire Motor Speedway on August 12th & 13th for the ACT All Star Challenge. 44 teams are headed to the Magic Mile for a mandatory test session on Tuesday August 2 to prepare for the race to be run in conjunction with the IZOD INDYCAR event and the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour.

Twenty-eight baseball players from all over Vermont and some from other New England states played nonstop baseball at the Barre Town Recreation Field last Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon setting a new world record. Playing for a total of 48 hours 32 minutes and 45 seconds nonstop they beat the St. Louis record of 48 hours 9 minutes. St. Louis had 40 players the max the rules allowed. The final score was Blue Team 198 to Red Team 128 after 200 complete innings. Game rules did not allow any of the players once they started playing to leave the field. The record breaking game was organized by Bobby DeAngelis and the Rutland Country Store in Rutland Town. The registration fees were given to benefit the Barre Sports and Recreation Department. Every minute of the game was recorded and officially umpired and will be submitted to Guinness Book of Records for acceptance.
