PASTORAL REFLECTIONS
Ang corporate world nagamit man sang Vision-Mission Statements kag nahanas sila sa organization skills and strategies kag ginatan-aw gilayon ang end-results. Dugay na akon nabatian nga we cannot program people. Do Justice, Love Mercy, Walk Humbly with God. This ringing call to action is the answer given by the prophet Micah, in Chap. 6:8, to the question, What does the Lord require of you, Israel? What are you supposed to do to live faithfully with your God? Do justice, love mercy, walk humbly with your God.
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. 2 Timothy 3:16 The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Psalms 12:6 Of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh. Ecclesiastes 12:12b But these are written, that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name. John 20:31 The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Psalms 19:1 But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds of the air, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish of the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this? Job 12:7-9 You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for you have created all things, and for your pleasure they are and were created. Revelation 4:11

A CATECHESIS ON THE FEAST OF THE PENTECOST _________________

REV. FR. GERARDO P. ARROYO PAROCHIAL VICAR

Etymologically, this feasts name is called Pentecost which is the Greek term for fifty or fiftieth day. The basis for this name is in the Scriptures of the Old Testament where the Greek speaking Jews described the Jewish feast of the weeks as Pentecost (2Mac12:31-32; Tob2:1). In the New Testament the term Pentecost is found in Acts 2:1; 20:16; 1 Cor. 16:8. The Old Testament mentions a Jewish feast of Pentecost whose present name is Schavuot. It is from this Jewish feast that the Christian feast of Pentecost took its name although they differ both in their celebration and content. Originally, in the Old Testament, Pentecost was an agricultural feast harvest festival characterized by the offering of the first fruits in the form of cereal offering of new grain to Yahweh. Later on, this feast became the day of commemorating the giving of the Law with the emphasis on the covenant God made with Israel. Thus, Pentecost was a day of the renewal of the covenant. On the other hand, the Christian Pentecost was explicitly mentioned in the sacred oral traditions of the Church, in particular, in the apocryphal Epistle to the Apostle (Epistula Apostolorum) written about 160 A.D. The Epistle declared that the final coming of Jesus will occur between the Feast of the Pentecost and Easter. Origen in his writing Contra Celcius (248 A.D.) listed four Christians feast days celebrated during his time, namely; Sunday as the Lords Day, the Preparation Day, the Passover and Pentecost. Tertullian, a Christian apologist of the 2nd century writes that fasting, as well, as kneeling during the Sunday service is unlawful; so too it was during the season of Easter and Pentecost. Christian tradition and practices show that the Christian Pentecost was already a feast of great interest to the Christians even during this time. As the advent of the end of the Roman Empire dawned, Christian persecution diminished. Consequently, many people have been

converted into Christianity. Candidates for baptism who were not accommodated during the Easter Vigil were baptized on the day of the Pentecost. So, Pentecost turned out to be another baptismal day; consequently, a Vigil and an Octave was celebrated before and after it. St Jerome, in acknowledging this Christian tradition recommended these festivities as fitting to this celebration. This later has led Pope Leo the Great (440-461) to admonish some bishops to baptized candidates only during the feast of Easter and Pentecost. In the 4th and 5th centuries, Pentecost developed into the feast of the Holy Spirit in commemoration of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit as recorded in the Books of the Acts of the Apostles. On the onset, it seen in connection with Easter season but during the Middle Ages the connection was lost and it has become a different entity. This is obviously manifested because it has its own cycle: the Sundays after Pentecost. Under the influence of the liturgical and biblical movements, the relationship of Pentecost to Easter was rediscovered. The vigil was abolished in 1956 and in 1970 the Octave was suppressed. From this time onward the feast of the Pentecost is to be seen as the end of the Easter season. In the first reading is found the account of the first Pentecost in Jerusalem. The Jews were there to celebrate their day of thanksgiving to God for the harvest and the commemoration of the giving of the covenant. Many people were in that place for it was a day of pilgrimage. Many of the Jews in that place during that time witnessed the manifestation of the Holy Spirit. Luke used the imageries of the Old Testament like the strong driving wind and tongues of fire resting on each individual. The effects of the descend of the Holy Spirit were astounding. A band of men who before were cowering in fear especially during the passion of Jesus stood up courageously and spoke bravely before the public of the resurrected Christ, particularly Peter

who became the spokesman of the group. The most remarkable effect was the manifestation of the miracle of language where each disciple was speaking in his own tongue. In this event the story of Babel was reversed. The Holy Spirit repaired the damage caused by the Tower of Babel incident and brought unity to the once dispersed people of God. Paul, in the Second Reading tells us of his experience of the Spirit in the Church. He says that the Holy Spirit is the life principle of the Church because only in His power that one can acknowledge Jesus is Lord. The Holy Spirit is also the principle of unity in the Church. He renders the different gifts and talents for the common good and the building up of the Body of Christ. The gospel reading that we have is the Johannine version of the Pentecost. For John, the Spirit was given to the disciples not on the fiftieth day of the Resurrection but on the Resurrection day itself. This is so because the Church reminds us that the outpouring of the Spirit is strictly related to Easter Jesus in his Paschal Mystery (His sufferings, death and Resurrection) has gained for us this greatest of all gifts the Holy Spirit. Giving his disciples the Holy Spirit, Christ gives them a new ministry in the Church the ministry of reconciliation. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are never given for the good of an individual member alone but are all church-related and for the edification of the Body of Christ. On this Pentecost day, therefore, we must ask some very profound questions of ourselves and our community. Questions like: How do we witness that Jesus is Lord? Are we chariots of fire alive and burning with the flame of the Pentecost? Are we bold enough in our proclamation that Jesus is Lord and even bolder in working for justice, peace and forgiveness among individuals and communities? Today is the day that we are sent forth to proclaim peace and forgiveness from the only One who is lasting peace and total forgiveness. The Spirit comes as a flame to burn away our illusion and liberates us to see the world on fire for Christ and his peace. In a world which is so in desperate need of the Spirit, let us be about the work of the Pentecost.

WHY DO WE CELEBRATE PENTECOST? There are three mega-festivals commemorated in the Christian calendar. The first two, Christmas and Easter, are well known to both believers and non-believers. But its possible that PIESTA SANG PENTEKOSTES even liturgical Christians may not be as familiar with the third, ___________________ Henry Mota, Special Feature the festival of Pentecost.

Pero natigayon man gihapon kay amat-amat man sila nagtambong.
