CLEMSON UNIVERSITY NATIONAL SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Maymester 2011

SOUTH AFRICA
Sixteen Scholars studied South African history, culture, politics, and commerce with history professor James Burns in spring 2011, followed by a Maymester educational enrichment expedition centered in Cape Town. Highlights included Table Mountain National Park, the Bo Kapp district, Kirstenbosch Gardens, wildlife expeditions, meetings at the University of Stellenbosch, and a tour of Khayelitsha township.

LAUREN HARROFF Engineers tend to focus on scientific issues, but this experience reminded me how interested I am in working with people and for human interests. It also reinforced the idea that scientific and environmental issues are closely intertwined with the human condition. KATHARINE AMALFITANO I was moved by the kindness and generosity of the people of Cape Town, particularly at Vickys B & B, where she works to provide lunches to children in Khayelitsha but cannot afford to do so every day. As President of Sertoma at Clemson, I hope we will assist her over the coming year.

REBECCA DEERY As an education major, Im constantly creating ways to use my passion for teaching to do something extraordinary. Visiting the township school energized me for a future teaching abroad where quality educators are so desperately needed.

Dr. Burns warned us during our first meeting that Africa would grab us and not let us go. He was partially right -Africa is a fascinating continent and not easy to forget, but Dr. Burns enthusiasm for the subject and excellent teaching encouraged me to continue learning about South Africa and other parts of the continent. - Lauren Harroff
