[002.154And do not speak of those who are slain in Allah's way as dead; nay, (they are)
alive, but you do not perceive.
002.155 And We will most certainly try you with somewhat of fear and hunger and loss
of property and lives and fruits; and give good news to the patient]

Before I discuss these two verses it would be pertinent to say some words on the previous
verse in which it was discussed that the life of Shuhadaa (martyred) is inconceivable for
the human intellect. In the previous verse Allah has emphasized that who were killed in
the holy war (and still who will be killed in holy war for the sake of Allah and His Din)

they are still alive. So the Muslims should not think about them that they are dead people
like other dead ones. They (martyred) also enjoy the blessings of Allah Subhana-Wa-
Ta’aala in their world which is different from ours.
In the holy Quran there is mention that there are three different lives of human
beings. The first life is this what we are leading. In this world we live for days, months
or years and after the termination of the life according to the law of Allah, we qualify to
enter a new life. That life is called Alhayaat Al-Berzaghia. It has been mentioned in the
hadith of Ahlul Bayt as soon as a man dies a new body also comes out of his dead body.
After a man dies Allah Subhana-Wa-Ta’aala gives him a new body which exists in the
life of berzagh before the Day of Judgment. Even the deceased person after he passed
away he sees this new body comes out of his dead body and the deceased body gets
surprised. He will be standing before the people crying round his deceased body but at
the same time dead body of the deceased person is also lying. So this new body that
Allah gives is for the life of burzagh. It is a life between this world and the Day of
Judgment. In holy Quran Allah says;

[wamin wara-ihim barzakhun ila

yawmi yubAAathoona] (behind them is Barzakh (a barrier) until the Day when they will
be resurrected.). There is life of Burzakh a life before the hereafter life. Before the Day
of Judgment a man has to live in that world. So that is the world that Allah is talking
about in this verse. He talks about the martyrs. Shuhadaa are in immortal life in this
world.
Now the question is that what kind of life the Shahadaa get and what kind of life a
common man gets when he died? Some scholars say that this kind of life is called Al-
Hayat-tul-Ghabiya (life which can not be seen or felt) this life is particularly for
Shuhadaa (martyred). We have got no idea or sense about that life. If somebody wishes
to get the meaning of it one has to get the death of shahadat.
Some scholars say that it is not only an unseen life as Allah says do not consider
them the dead people who were killed for the sake of Allah – the meanings what we get
are misguided. They say that the meaning of the life of shahid people is the guidance. So
according to this notion we get the meanings that do not consider those who are slain for
the noble cause of Allah to be misguided. But you are unaware. And the reason why
they say because some of the Muslims at the time of the prophet (Salla 'Llahu 'alayhi wa
sallam) they worried about those people who lost their lives in that battle of Badr. They
died for misguidance. That is their understanding. So they think that Allah Subhana-Wa-
Ta’aala is describing those people as guidance, they are on right path. And we should
not think that they are in misguidance. It was the point of view of the second group of
scholars.
Now we proceed towards the third group of scholars. They say that when Allah
said that do not consider them the dead people because they are alive, their message is
alive. Though shuhadaa are not with us but they are alive and enjoy the blessings of
Allah that are showered on them. The exact example of Imam Hussain can be quoted
here in this respect. He is not among us with his body but he is alive. Because his

message is still alive. Each Muslim will talk about the level and degree of sacrifice of
Imam Hussain he gave for the mankind and left a message that life contains no value to

keep the teachings of Islam alive. Imam Hussain (AS) is alive. He is not dead. Let the
human brain get sane senses, every nation will call Hussain is ours.
The history is a live witness that Imam Hussain with his family gave the highest
possible sacrifice in Karbala in order to keep the torch of Islam high. He did not
compromise with satanic forces but he preferred to be martyred. He left a great message
after him that you the people should never compromise on Iman. It should remain
sacrosanct and the values of the Din are inviolable that no deal can be made on it. That’s
why our uncertain lives should ever be ready to sacrifice. The virtues of Imam Hussain
(AS) made him alive. He is the greatest possible Shahid of this planet.
Hadith of Ahlul Bayt say that in the life of Burzagh those shuhadaa are still alive
and Allah is blessing them with different things. The worst example of such people is the
pagans and disbelievers who fought with Muslims in the battle of Badr. The leaders of
the Mushrikeen were killed including Abu Juhal, Umayaa BuN Khalaf and other leaders.
The prophet (Salla 'Llahu 'alayhi wa sallam) came on their corpses and called them by
their names

indeed we
have seen what Allah Subhana-Wa-Ta’aala has made promise with us and that is true.
Then a Muslim came to the prophet (Salla 'Llahu 'alayhi wa sallam) and spoke to him
that they were the dead. Then the prophet (Salla 'Llahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said

they hear more than you. Though they are not in this world but they
have got another life and they hear and see what is going on in this world.
Allah said that those people are alive they get all the blessings of Allah as you live
people get blessings from Allah. Here from we get the clear indication that there is a
crystal clear concept of the life of Burzagh. Now we have to see the life of Burzagh
where souls of the people remain. As the holy Quran has stated about the life of Burzagh
in different verses. This life is called Hayat ul Burzagh. This is the life between this
world and hereinafter life. The people who believe in this life they enjoy in this life and
the pagans and Kaffir get punishment in this life. About the life of Burzagh it would be
discussed in detail Inshallah in next sitting.
But in the verse of the day Allah says

[Walanabluwannaku
m bishay-in mina alkhawfi waaljooAAi wanaqsin mina al-amwali] (And We will most
certainly try you with somewhat of fear and hunger and loss of property and lives and
fruits; and give good news to the patient.) This is very important verse that Allah puts
the Muslims in a test to let them prove their mettle. In this verse there is very clear
message that those will be blessed who will put them in a test for the sake of Din and
Islam and they have to show and exhibit their patience. Because to be patient it is
imperative for a Muslim. Otherwise justice may not prevail. Life may not proceed.

Results of human efforts will be in contrast to the Quranic notion of life. That’s why the
patience with the offering of salat has also been given importance. Allah says in Surah
Mulk:

[067.001Tabaraka allathee biyadihi almulku wahuwa AAala kulli shay-in qadeerun

067.002. Allathee khalaqa almawta waalhayata liyabluwakum ayyukum ] (067.001
Blessed be He in Whose hands is Dominion; and He over all things hath Power. 067.002
He Who created Death and Life, that He may try which of you is best in deed: and He is
the Exalted in Might). Allah says that He is one who created death and life in order to
test you. It is clear now that the entire life of us is the practical test. And the results will
be in accordance with the maneuvers of us. In other verse Allah says

[029.00
1 Alif-lam-meem. 029.002. Ahasiba alnnasu an yutrakoo an yaqooloo amanna wahum la
yuftanoona] (029.00. 1L.M. 029.002. Do men think that they will be left alone on
saying, "We believe", and that they will not be tested?) Those people say that they are
Muslims we are the followers of Ahlul Bayt they are not trusted. Even people were
tested before the times of many prophets. People put themselves in the tests of Allah
according to their own viewpoints. For example if they are poor, they don’t have
children, they don’t have houses etc. these people think that they are tested. And when
they have money, they have children, they have everything, such people think that they
are not tested. In other words it is better to say Allah puts us in tests to see who are still
on the right path and who are on the path of their own wishes. Allah has many ways to
test us. Sometimes he gives us a great deal of money. Sometimes by giving us poverty.
And sometimes by snatching the blessings what we used to have, and sometimes he
brings havoc to our harvest. These are all the tools of Allah to test our mettle. Those
people will be rewarded and regarded in the sight of Allah who will not leave the path of
Allah and the teachings of Quran and His prophet (Salla 'Llahu 'alayhi wa sallam)
through the high spirits of patience.
Allah has said in Surah Fajr

[089.015
Faamma al-insanu itha ma ibtalahu rabbuhu faakramahu wanaAAAAamahu fayaqoolu
rabbee akramani] (Now, as for man, when his Lord trieth him, giving him honour and
gifts, then saith he, (puffed up), "My Lord hath honoured me.") Some group of people
when Allah gives them blessings of their desires they think that Allah is happy with them.
But from other point of the view of Allah Subhana-Wa-Ta’aala you will come to know
that actually it is a test from Allah. So dear readers don’t forget that you might be in test.
If it is to be seen in the Quranic view our all life in every phase and in all the
circumstances it is the test of us in the world from Allah. So we have got to recognize
our responsibilities and assignments from Allah Subhana-Wa-Ta’aala.
Now the point is to understand that where we are in tests? If we have a whale of
wealth, it is easy to understand that we should also think about the needy that lack basic
staple food. And other basic necessities of life to let them survive with honour and

dignity. We should give them. We should think about them. If we are giving them
something actually we are completing our religious obligation which is imperative upon
us from Allah. And if we have nothing, then it does not mean that we should complain to
Allah and we should leave worshiping Allah. It is a sheer violation of Tawheed. We
should worship Allah steadfastly and we should not leave the rope of hope. If we

abandoned the hope from Allah actually we are doing Kuffer. Because hopelessness is
Kuffer (negation of the teaching of the holy Quran). And if we are sick, we should do
Ziker of Allah incessantly, with devotion and with full concentration. It does not mean
that we should forget Allah in disease. There should not by any conditional worship of
Allah. I must quote here that Imam Ali (AS) in his life always preferred to remain
without having much provision. Simplest possible life he lead. Bravest possible life he
spent. Highest possible teachings he acquired directly from the holy prophet (Salla
'Llahu 'alayhi wa sallam). Strongest possible strategies he devised. Smoothest possible
management he did. Persuasive possible communications he adapted. Boldest possible
decisions he made. Finest possible sword he possessed. Keenest possible cutting edge of
his sword was. The most generous personality in the world he was. The kindest possible
heart was in his breast. The first and earliest possible believer he was. The biggest
possible gate of the city of knowledge he was. Subhan Allah (all glory to Allah). In
short, what he was! He was the greatest possible. The more provision and money the
more tough accountability on the Day of Judgment. This was the simplest possible rule
of Imam Ali (AS) in his life. And this is the ruling of the holy Quran and practical life of
Ahlul Bayt. Then why not to follow the footsteps of mosoomin? That’s why Imam Ali
(AS) said if the money is to be used in halal way Allah
rests accountability on it and if the money got through haram way there is also a tough
accountability. Here is very clear lesson that in both cases test of Allah is on us.
Allah puts tests on us by giving us fear, by sending tornadoes and other kinds of
storms, by making us sick, by giving us plethora of money, by giving nothing to us.
Allah in many ways testes us that who is with him and his messenger and Ahlul Bayt and
who are the unthankful and hypocrites. So we should be ready every time for the test
imposed by Allah upon us. Because to be always ready for Islam it needs to have
sacrifices. We may also be killed in a war, or in a battle, or in a Jihad like situation. So
Allah tests the veracity of our vivacity for Islam.
Allah also gives us a glad tiding that Allah will be beside them who could
maintain and exhibit their steadfast patience. Patience is a strange phenomenon given to
us by Allah. It is the patience we bear the hunger, it is the patience we do justice with
others, it is the patience that we don’t become the prey of Shatain’s incitements. It is the
patience we do Jihad, it is the patience we are the protagonist of the holy Quran.
If you read life-stories of the prophets you will come to know the level of the
patience of them. That how much they were steadfast in their patience. The prophet
Ayub had wealth and everything. Shaitan asked Allah to take all the blessings from
prophet Ayub, he would come to the path of Shaitan. Allah replied that He knew His
servant more than he. Shaitan said that he did not believe the statement of Allah given in
favour of prophet Ayub. Allah proved by taking all the blessings of wealth from prophet

Ayub. Everything was taken from him. Even prophet Ayub was also deprived of his best
friends. Allah also sent sickness on him. But prophet Ayub said;

I thank Allah Who at least gave me the tongue that I can

talk to him with tongue. That I can say Allahmdu Llilha - Subhan Allah, and Allah-O-
Akber. I can glorify him with my tongue. Then Allah returned all what he used to have

before the debacle. So if such conditions may come in our life we should be more
steadfast in glorifying Allah.
The life of prophet Ibrahim is also full of patience. Prophet Ibrahim was also
tested by Allah when he was given a dream to slaughter his son. How difficult it was for
Ibrahim? But he became ready to fulfill the dream. But Allah stopped him. This is
wonderful example of patience. Prophet Ibrahim faced the hardships of Nimrood, but the
with patience he came out of the fires of highhandedness of that god-king. This is the
blessing of patience. After those tests on prophet Ibrahim, Allah said

[ Wa-ithi ibtala
ibraheema rabbuhu bikalimatin faatammahunna qala innee jaAAiluka lilnnasi imaman]
(And remember that Abraham was tried by his Lord with certain commands, which he
fulfilled: He said: "I will make thee an Imam to the Nations). Allah made him Imam of
the nations.
But the question comes in mind that the test is given to the person whose
potentials are not known. But should we understand that Allah when tests others, does
He not know? The side of this question is different which is not before our intellect.
Actually the test of Allah is the eduction of a man. Just to educate a man. And to make
him a humble servant of Allah.
