The Large Truck and Bus Crash Facts: Early Release is based on crash data from the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration,
as well as preliminary total vehicle mile traveled (VMT) data from the Federal Highway Administration.
Any tables that depend on VMT by vehicle type or vehicle registration data for the calculation of
crash rates are not included in the early release but will be included in the final report, to be released
in the coming months. In these early release tables, missing data are indicated by dashes.

involved in fatal crashes declined by 31 percent from 2007 to 2009. In comparison, the number of passenger vehicles involved in fatal
crashes declined by 19 percent from 2007 to 2009.
Over the past year, large truck and bus fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled by all motor vehicles (preliminary data) declined
by 21 percent, from 0.153 in 2008 to 0.121 in 2009.
From 1999 to 2009:
- The number of large trucks involved in fatal crashes has declined by 35 percent.
- The number of large trucks involved in injury crashes has decreased by 48 percent.
- The number of large trucks involved in property damage only crashes has decreased by 35 percent.
- The number of buses involved in fatal crashes has declined by 31 percent.
- On average, intercity buses have accounted for 12 percent of all buses involved in fatal crashes, and school buses and transit buses
have accounted for 40 percent and 35 percent, respectively, of all buses involved in fatal crashes.
From 1989 to 2009:
- The number of large trucks involved in fatal crashes has declined by 35 percent.
- The number of large trucks involved in injury crashes has declined by 52 percent.
- The number of large trucks involved in property damage only crashes has decreased by 20 percent.
- The number of buses involved in fatal crashes has declined by 28 percent.
