Overview
ThislessonprovidesanoverviewoftheanalyticalmodelinRevitStructure.Ithighlightsthe differencesbetweenthephysicalandanalyticalmodel.Thelessonincludesabriefreviewof modelinginRevitStructurefollowedbyanintroductiontotheconceptoflinkingtothirdparty analysis.Additionally,thelessonintroducesstructuralloads,loadcases,andloadcombinations inthesoftware.Finally,thislessonworksthroughanexampleofsendingasimplestructureto analysisinRISATechnologiessoftware.

Objectives
Aftercompletingthislesson,studentswillbeableto: ExplaintheAnalyticalModel. DescribethedifferencesbetweenPhysicalandAnalyticalModels. Definethebasicconceptofstructuralloads,loadcases,andloadcombinations. ExplainhowthebasictoolsworkinRevitStructurerelatedtoleveragingtheBIM modelforStructuralAnalysis. DefinetherelationshipofanalysissoftwarelikeRISA3D,RISAFloor,and AutodeskStructuralAnalysisandDesignapplicationstoRevitStructureBIM software.

Theory:PhysicalandAnalyticalObjects
RevitStructureisaBuildingInformationModeling(BIM)application.Allelementsofthe structuralmodelhaveoneunifying,underlyingdatabasethatcontrolstheentiremodelboth physicalandanalytical.Bidirectionalassociativityofthetwostructuralmodelsmeansthata changetoaphysicalobjectinoneviewchangestheassociatedanalyticalobject.BIMendeavors tocapture,preserve,andreuseinformationfordownstreamapplications.Thebenefitofthis approachishigherqualityoutput,greaterproductivity,andlesseffort(lesscost).Revit Structureelementsarecontrolledthroughparametricrelationshipsbetweenthephysicaland analyticalmembers.Forexample,theanalyticalcolumnistypicallycenteredinthephysical columngeometriccenter.Whenthephysicalcolumnismoved,theanalyticalcolumnmoves alsokeepingitsrelationshiptothephysicalcolumnsgeometriccenter. Usingthelatestlinksavailablefrommanyoftheavailableanalysisprograms,newmodelscan becreatedinRevitStructureoryouranalysissoftwareusingtheinformationavailableinthe otherprogram.Inmanycases,allgeometricanddesigninformationincludingmaterials,family instances,walls,slabs,openings,gridlines,boundaryconditions,footings,loads,andload combinationscanbecreated,updated,ordeletedineitherofthetwoprogramsusingthe informationavailableintheotherprogram. Thislessonfeaturestwooftheseanalysispartners:RISATechnologiesandAutodeskStructural AnalysisandDesignapplications. RISATechnologiescreatesbuildingdesignandoptimizationsoftwarethatconsistsofRISAFloor andRISA3D.AsanAutodeskAuthorizedDeveloper,RISATechnologiesworkscloselywith AutodeskensurecompatibilitybetweenRISAFloor,RISA3D,andRevitStructuresoftware. RISAFloorandRISA3DlinkwithRevitStructureandeachothertoprovidearobust,twoway exchangeofinformation,enablingsynchronizationbetweentheRevitStructurephysicalmodel andtheanalyticalmodelinRISAFloorandRISA3D. WithintheAutodeskStructuralAnalysisandDesignportfolioisRobobatROBOTMillennium,a structuralanalysisanddesignsoftware.ROBOTMillenniumisafeaturerichstructuralanalysis anddesignsoftwareapplicationcapableofmodelingandanalyzingvirtuallyanytypeof structure,nomatterhowadvancedthegeometryconditions.ROBOTMillenniumisanideal analysiscompanionforbuildinginformationmodeling(BIM)software,andlinkswithRevit Structure.WithROBOTMillennium,RevitStructureuserscandirectlyanalyzetheirmodels,

withoutoversimplifyingorinterferingwiththeoverallbuildinginformationmodelinorderto satisfytherestrictionsoftheirchosenanalysissolution.

StructuralAnalysisSoftwarePointstoConsider
ManyoftheapplicationsthatcanlinktoRevitStructurehavethefollowingpointstoconsider whenworkingwithThirdPartyStructuralAnalysis(3PSA): Tolerances:TheengineercanspecifyaTolerancevalueinmost3PSA.TheTolerance valueisprovidedtotakeintoaccountdiscrepancieswhilemodelinginRevitStructure. Anypoints,elements,orloadsdefinedwithinthistolerancelimitwillbesnappedtothe samelocation. BoundaryConditions:PointBoundaryconditionsaresupported.TheX,Y,Ztranslation androtationaresupported.Iftheboundaryconditionisspecifiedasaspring,thenthe springmodulusisalsosupported. PointLoads:RevitStructurepointloadsaretranslatedintoeither3PAjointloadsor ThirdPartyAnalysismemberpointloads,dependingonwhethertheRevitStructure pointloadisplacedonajointoronamember.Pointloadsthatarenotlocatedoneither ajointoramemberaretypicallynottranslatedinmanythirdpartyapplications. LineLoads:RevitStructurelineloadsarebroughtoverasmemberdistributedloadsin mostapplications.AnypartofaRevitStructurelineloadthatiscoincidentwitha memberwillbetranslated.RevitStructureloadsdoNOThavetostartandendonthe membersends,andcanbefullywithinoroutsidethemembersstartandendpointsfor mostapplications.Lineloadsthatspanmultiplememberswillhavetheappropriatepart oftheloadappliedtoeachmember. AreaLoads:RevitStructurearealoadsaretranslatedintoeitherthreeorfourpoint ThirdPartyAnalysismemberarealoads.Anyarealoadswithmorethanfourpointsare notcurrentlyconsideredbysome3PSA. TypeSets:Columns,Beams,andBraces(notallthesame):MemberswithTypesetto Column,Beam,orBracearesupported.Theseelementsarecreatediftheyarenot existentinthecurrentRevitStructureproject.Ifanexistingelementisfound,its geometryandpropertiesareupdated.Ifanelementisdeletedinthe3PSA,itis automaticallyremovedfromtheRevitStructureproject.Thegeometry,location,shape name,rotation,materialinformation,andfunctionoffamilyinstancescanbeupdated from3PSAtoRevitStructureinmostcases. 3PSAshapenamesaremappedtofamiliescorrespondingtoshapesinRevitStructure viaashapemappingfile.Ifafamilycorrespondingtoaparticularshapeisnotalready existentinthecurrentprojectandthe3PSAlinksupportsanautoloadoption,thenthe linkwillrunthroughallavailableRevitStructurefamilies.Ifamatchisfoundforthe

newlyimportedshape,thenthecorrespondingfamilyisautomaticallyloadedinthe project. IfashapenameisinbothaColumnandBeamfamilyintheRevitStructureproject,itis distinguishedbythepresenceoftheColumnkeywordintheColumnfamilyandFraming keywordintheFramingFamily. Materials:Moststeel,concrete,andwoodmaterialsavailablein3PSAaretranslatedto RevitStructureMaterials;however,engineersneedtopaycloseattentiontothis definitionbetweentheapplications. LoadCases:3PSABasicLoadCasesarebroughtoverasRevitStructureLoadCases.The BLClabelin3PSAisusedastheNameofLoadCasesinRevitStructure. CantileverBeams:IfeithertheMomentConnectionStartorMomentConnectionEnd fieldsofabeamaresettoCantileverMoment,thenthebeamisbroughtinasa Cantileverinthe3PSA.IfbotharespecifiedasCantileverMoment,thenthebeamisnot broughtintoRISAFloor,asthiscaseispracticallyimpossible.TheCantileverbeammust haveacolinearbeamattachedtoitscantileverend.Also,thepropertiesofthe Cantileverbeamshouldbeidenticaltothoseofthecolinearbeam.Thisistobe consistentwiththedefaultprocedureofcreatingcantileversinRISAFloor. MultilevelColumns:Watchthese,astheirdefinitionsmayvarybetweenRevitStructure andthe3PSAproducts. DeckDefinitions:Eachindividuallydefineddeck/slabhasitsowndefinitionunderDeck Definitionsinmostofthe3PSAproducts.AtpresentRevitStructureprovidesthename ofthedeck,itsthickness,deckdirection,concretestrength,weightofconcrete,and Elasticmodulus.AllotherpropertiesarebeingdefaultedtothoseofstandardComposite Decksinthe3PSA.

Note:Itishighlyimportanttohaveclosecommunicationwithallteammembersworking ontheproject:engineers,BIMmodelers,andsoon.
