2 ZONE 4, THURSDAY, AUGUST 18, 2011 WWW.THESTATE.COM THE STATE, COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA BROOKLAND-CAYCE BEARCATS
Rusty Charpias first
mission in his inaugural
season at Brookland-Cay-
ce for the most part
has been accomplished.
We came in knowing
we couldnt build the world
in two months this sum-
mer, but we could get our
players in shape, Charpia
said. And we worked them
hard in conditioning, and I
think they are in the best
shape they have been in.
They are stronger and fast-
er already. You can only do
so much in two months,
and we did as much as we
could, so thats a win for
us.
With a team that won
two games the past two
seasons, Charpia said cele-
brating the small victories
is key to building the Bear-
cats confidence which
he hopes will turn into pos-
itive results on the field.
Theres no magical
speech or great slogan that
can turn a place around
overnight; were just going
to fight mini-battles and
count those as victories,
the coach said.
In practice, the approach
has produced the desired
effect.
Were getting pushed
harder than we ever have
been, said defensive end
Tariq Byrd, one of 20 se-
niors on the squad. Our
coaches continue to push
us to our limits, and even
when you want to quit, they
make us feel that we can do
more.
Added offensive line-
man McFarland Murph:
Its a weapon we have this
season. Were the same
team we used to be because
this coach really inspires
us.
The biggest difference
on the field could be the
athleticism of the linemen
on either side of the ball.
The strength and stamina
developed through an in-
tense conditioning pro-
gram means the Bearcats
should be more physical up
front. Shannon Washing-
ton, who plays on both
lines, said that will lead to a
more productive offense
and a more stingy defense.
In 2010, the Bearcats av-
eraged 236 yards and 12
points per game and al-
lowed an average of 342
yards and 31 points, finish-
ing 2-9.
The team is convinced
this years outcome will be
different.
The most important
thing is to improve each
week and be ready for the
region, Charpia said.
His team has a head
start, because the Bearcats
already are winning.

ROSTER
Last season, Lexington
again demonstrated it has
the skill and athleticism to
compete with the states
best football teams.
This season, a deter-
mined group of seniors
aims to prove the Wildcats
are the states best.
With the season we had
last year, weve earned
some high expectations,
and we embrace them,
second-year coach Scott
Earley said.
With 13 starters return-
ing from a 10-4 squad, in-
cluding the nucleus of both
offense and defense, the
Wildcats are equipped to
meet those expectations.
Shaq Roland, the states
scoring leader with 36
touchdowns and nearly
3,000 all-purpose yards in
2010, said having the sea-
son end in the state semifi-
nals with a loss to Byrnes
was both disappointing
and inspiring.
It didnt feel good to end
the season with a loss, but it
let us know that we can be
on that level, said Roland,
who has committed to
USC. I knew that we were
going to come back with
some fire to us, and it feels
good to be out here now.
At wide receiver, run-
ning back, kick returner
and defensive back, Ro-
land was a playmaker for
Lexington and a catalyst
for its offense.
The Wildcats again will
employ Roland at several
positions, but Earley said
the biggest impact will
come from the total pack-
age on the field.
Were expanding every-
one elses role, he said.
The players we line up
with him can take the pres-
sure off Shaq, force our op-
ponents to decide whether
to key on him and take
their chances with the oth-
er guys or play him
honest.
Added running back
Kevin Miller: Everybody
is more well-rounded this
season, and well definitely
do better this season if ev-
erybody does more and
does it well.
The powerhouse offense
averaged 32 points and just
under 400 yards per game
in 2010, but Lexingtons
stingy defense often was
the key to victory. On that
side, leading tacklers
Chase Austin and Jesse
Williams are among the
returnees.
Austin said the momen-
tum gained during the
postseason carried
through to offseason work-
outs and preseason prac-
tice and has led to a more
prepared and capable
team.
Lexington is well on the
way to being the best team
it can be, in hopes that
come December, the Wild-
cats can earn the title of
best team in the state.

4 ZONE 4, THURSDAY, AUGUST 18, 2011 WWW.THESTATE.COM THE STATE, COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA WHITE KNOLL TIMBERWOLVES
By the end of the 2010 season, the White
Knoll Timberwolves had laid claim to
school history on two counts.
With a 7-4 record and an appearance in
the first round of the Class 4A Division I
playoffs, the Timberwolves notched the
most wins in a season its first winning
campaign since it began play in 2004
and its first back-to-back playoff appear-
ances.
We definitely have momentum coming
from that success, third-year coach Gor-
don Walters said. And we definitely want
to keep that going. Theres no easy way to
do that.
So the Timberwolves know they are
looking at a difficult road.
The squad lost two of its leading rush-
ers, Tyrell Grant and Justin Rose, who
each rushed for more than1,000 yards last
season. But Walters said the Timber-
wolves are prepared to adjust.
We used to have to hold on to the ball a
lot (and rush it). This year, we are going to
be more (versatile) with our offense, Wal-
ters said.
Quarterback Jake Beckett can be ex-
pected to put the ball in the air more as the
Timberwolves try to strike a better bal-
ance on offense.
Walters credited a tremendous group
of seniors with keeping the squad fo-
cused as it prepares for its follow-up act.
The seniors have done a great job so
far of keeping the team together and on
task and we have a group of high-char-
acter, very motivated kids, Walters said.
They all really want to have another
strong season.
The kids, I think, have started to ex-
pect to win, and thats a good thing that
they have that belief and they are putting
in the work for it. Its a process, and you
cant skip any of the steps.
In each of the past two seasons, the
Timberwolves have obtained a clear view
of what the next step is as they faced the
defending champion in the first round of
the playoffs.
That shows us where we need to be,
Walters said.
And though Walters said his team likes
to keep its goals private, there next bench-
mark on the list is clear: the programs
first playoff victory.

returns 19 starters from a
squad that finished 9-3 and
made the second round of
the playoffs with mostly
sophomores and first-year
starters. They quieted
doubters last year after los-
ing all but three starters
from a 2009 squad that set
the school record for wins.
The Eagles do not have
many detractors now, se-
nior quarterback Kelvin
Harris said.
Last year, everybody
thought wed do bad, but
this year its going to be
fun, he said. It feels good
because not many people
are telling us what we cant
do this year.
Harris, who threw for
1,000 yards on 67 comple-
tions last season, leads an
offense that returns nearly
all its key players, includ-
ing running back Davon
Howell.
Were going to be strong
on offense, coach Kirk
Burnett said. I think we
can be more physical be-
cause were just older, big-
ger and stronger.
The Eagles averaged 328
yards and 29 points per
game last season.
Weve got a junior-led
crew, and on paper were
better, Burnett said. We
just have to see it play out
on the field.
Burnett said last years
performance roused the
hopes of the Airport foot-
ball community, and that
was a driving force behind
offseason preparation.
We dont have to pull
teeth to get them (to work
out), and we dont have to
push to get as much out of
them. he said. They all
want to work because none
of them want to be the team
that falls short.
Linebacker Raymond
Pinkston said players are
invested because of the
teams ties to the
community.
I havent lived here all
my life, but a lot of our
coaches, a lot of my team-
mates families, have al-
ways been here, and they
really want us to do well,
he said. And that makes it
easier for us to go out and
give it our best.

At Batesburg-Leesville,
the Panthers are laying the
foundation for a strong
2012. With only nine se-
niors, the Panthers are a
young squad for whom this
seasons experience will be
crucial for the future.
Batesburg-Leesville lost
several of its top perform-
ers from a team that posted
a 7-4 record last season, in-
cluding quarterback KJ
Johnson, athlete Ricky Ad-
ams to graduation and line-
men Taquan West and Riv-
ers Bedenbaugh to trans-
fers. The Panthers won
seven in a row before end-
ing the season with back-
to-back losses and a first-
round playoff defeat.
But the Panthers are not
willing to chalk this up as a
rebuilding year.
Coach Courtney
McInnis said his team
hopes to win with ball-con-
trol offense.
Were really going to
have to manage the game
well on offense and rely on
our defense to keep us out
of trouble, McInnis said.
The young guys are tak-
ing their lumps now and
trying to just get better ev-
ery week to be ready when
the season starts.
For running back Jua-
wan Etheredge and wide-
out Ty Jones, collaboration
is key.
We have to have a team
approach this year more
than ever, Etheredge said.
That will really benefit us
if we get down, knowing
were not individual stars
and we all need each other
to get back up.
Added Jones: We are
working hard from top to
bottom, so I expect a lot out
of us this season.
On defense, linebacker
Rod Smith said the task of
providing breathing room
for the offense is welcome
pressure.
The biggest change this
year is attitude, and that
makes a big difference in
how well handle adversi-
ty, he said. Were well-
prepared to play whatever
part our team needs to be
successful.
McInnis said that atti-
tude is what he is most
proud of so far.
Theyre really positive
about what were facing,
and theyre embracing the
team concept, he said.
And both are going to be
keys to us winning this sea-
son.

Pelion is looking to earn
a playoff berth. With most
of its skill players on of-
fense returning, the path
seems clear:
The Panthers will need
production from running
back Jamar Pontoon, who
posted over 1,000 yards as
a junior last season.
They will need smart
play from quarterback Ja-
cob Huggins behind an
athletic, young offensive
line led by center Michael
Babb, the units only
returner.
And they will need their
health, because depth is an
issue at several positions.
Were further along
now than we have been be-
cause of the number of
starters we have back, but
we do still have some chal-
lenges, coach Ben Free-
man said.
Pontoon, a third-year
starter, dropped about 15
pounds and added speed.
While that should buoy the
running game, Freeman
said the Panthers might
have to employ a finesse-
oriented attack early in the
season.
We might go more for
quick passes, hope that the
linemen can just hit and
run, and not have to be as
physical at first, he said.
Hopefully, by the time
they get into region play,
they can handle all of it.
Though the Panthers
new linemen are bigger
and faster than in previous
years, they are learning the
system. When they are able
to pair knowledge with the
ability to execute, Pelions
offense should be fast and
powerful.
Were going to have
more team speed than peo-
ple have seen in the past
years, Freeman said. The
caliber of athletes that we
have now has given us
that.
Pelion has several op-
tions in the backfield and
receiving corps. Pontoon
hopes that by making him-
self the primary target of
opposing defense, oppor-
tunities will become avail-
able for his teammates.
When that happens,
Huggins said, were going
to make more plays, bigger
plays.
On defense, the Pan-
thers remain sound, with
leading tacklers Donald
Martin and John Kincaid
returning to anchor the un-
it. Transfer Jonathan Mag-
daleno, a fullback and line-
man, should contribute for
a defensive front that is
young.
Martin said what his
linemen lack in experience
they make up for with de-
sire and work ethic.
These young guys we
have want to win, and they
like to get out and get after
it, he said. I have confi-
dence in them because of
that.

A winning season is
overdue at Gilbert, where
the Indians last broke .500
in 2008.
That type of season may
be in the works for coach
Barry Harleys squad. The
Indians are focused and
dedicated to the team con-

ord last season.
The biggest change
this year is the kids ap-
proach to everything,
Harley said. Last year
was a tough year for us,
and I think this year
theres a refocusing on
what our goals are as a
team.
We lost the identity of
team last year, and when
things were not going well,
it showed.
This season, Harley
said, players have commit-
ted early.
Were thin at a lot of po-
sitions, but we still had
cuts this season, he said.
We didnt let them come
out just to come, so the
guys we have are more
committed, and they have
worked very hard to
improve.
He said the Indians are
getting leadership from a
group of seniors, including
Collins Shirley and Con-
nor Owings.
Most of our seniors are
back for a third season and
are doing a good job of set-
ting an example, Harley
said. Youre as good as
your seniors allow you to
be, and we feel like weve
got a good combination of
experience and talent in
that group.
Shirley said the Indians
can be competitive in the
region.
After last year, we knew
we needed team chemis-
try, more leadership and
people to step up, and I feel
like we are going to have
that this year, he said.
Gilberts nonconference
slate begins with A.C. Flo-
ra, White Knoll and Mid-
Carolina, among the top
teams in their respective
leagues in 2010.
When you look at the
schedule we have, we bet-
ter be ready to play on Fri-
day nights, Harley said.
With a difficult opening
slate, establishing mo-
mentum and remaining
headstrong despite poten-
tial setbacks will be key,
Harley said..
Were a team that is go-
ing out to win, and were
going to have to work to-
gether, running back
Omar Bethea said.
Added Owings: Were
going to have to build off
each other and build each
other up, keep each other
encouraged.
The most important
thing, Shirley said, is that
the team is not just com-
mitted but convinced.
Were not going into
games this year with play-
ers expecting to lose, he
said. We all really believe
we can win, and we will do
it one game at a time.

After one season under
Chad Leaphart, the Swan-
sea Tigers are believers.
The teams results in
2010 five wins and a
playoff berth were
enough to turn around
both the squads opinion
of itself and community
expectations. Swanseas
best season in three years
led to increased participa-
tion and greater enthusi-
asm for the offseason
work Leaphart asked of
his players.
Now, Leaphart said, the
challenge is to keep the
momentum going.
Were going forward,
not backwards, he said.
Weve got to build on
what we did last year.
And with much of last
seasons crew returning,
Swansea is in good posi-
tion to do so. Quarterback
Jordan Chavis, wide re-
ceiver Robbie Brown and a
committee of running
backs are among the key
returners.
Linebacker Byron John-
son, the defensive leader,
has moved to mike line-
backer so that he can cov-
er sideline to sideline, Lea-
phart said. Johnsons play
on offense at receiver
and quarterback also
could have a big impact.
We dont want to play
him every down, but hes
too good a player to have
standing next to you on the
sideline, Leaphart said.
Because the Tigers have
had a year to learn Lea-
pharts playbook, they
should be much more pre-
pared than they were last
season.
Chavis established him-
self as a leader during off-
season conditioning, as he
was the most consistent in
attending workouts. After
undergoing surgery to re-
pair a torn labrum in his
throwing shoulder in De-
cember, Chavis diligent
rehab allowed him to par-
ticipate in passing camps
in the summer. He is back
to full strength and ready
to start in Week 1s match-
up against Wagener-Sal-
ley.
I felt OK about the re-
sults last year, and I know
we can build off it because
most of the guys out here
have been playing togeth-
er for a long time, Chavis
said. So now we have
chemistry and a good sys-
tem that we understand.
Were going to able to exe-
cute more and keep each
other from the mental mis-
takes, too. So we should be
more successful.
Added Brown: We have
all the tools that we need to
be a better team than we
were last year. We just
have to be committed to
using them.
Leaphart said the Tigers
continue to aspire to the
legacy of Doug Bennetts
teams, which won three
consecutive state titles in
the 1990s.
The Tigers mantra in
attempting to get there is
simple: work harder.
