neuronalcells, work with models describing electrical activity of neurons, particularly the role of ion channels in maintaining and altering neuronal membrane potential, describe mechanisms of synaptic transmission and synapticplasticityinducedbyexperience, describe and analyze neurophysiological recording methodsusedtoassessneuronalactivity, andlimits ofthesetechniques.

Prerequisites:None CourseDescription: Purpose of the course is to supply the basic notions in the field of cellular neuroscience, and the intellectual tools for understanding recent advances of the molecular and cellular events underlying neural signaling, synaptic transmission and plasticity. To this endthebasicmorphologyandfunctionsofneuronsand glia, describing cytology of subcellular organelles in neuronal cells, familiarizing the students with electric neuronal models, and illustrating as examples the neuromuscular junction, central synapses, synaptic integrationandplasticity StudentLearningObjectives: Aftercompletingthecourse, studentsshouldbeableto: Describe and analyze the contributions of anatomical, physiological, behavioral, pharmacological, developmental, and cell and molecular biological studies to the bases of neuroscience, describe the basic morphology and functions of neuronsandglia, use proper scientific terminology for neurotransmitters, neurotransmitter receptors, and neurotransmitter receptor/effector signaling systems, describe cytology of subcellular organelles in

Jessell (eds) Principles of Neural Science (2000) ISBN10: 0071120009 ExamsandAssignments: Exams: Students will be evaluated with 4 tests during the semester, and a comprehensive final exam. Tests will consist of multiple choice questions and short answerquestionscoveringtheprecedinglessons. Each Test will count 30 points toward the final grade, and the Final Exam counts 90 points for a total of 210 points(seebelow). Grading Policy: Grading is based on a set of a priori criteria: 90% (or 189+ points) correct for A, ~80% (or 168+ points) for B, ~70% (or 147+ points) for C, and ~60%(or126+points)forD,lessthan~60%(126points) isautomaticallyanF.Theinstructorreservestherightto change the evaluation criteria (grade brackets) at his discretion, evenfromtesttotest.Noextratestwillbe availableforanyreason. Attendance: Attendance of classes is not mandatory butisstronglyrecommended, astestswillbebasedon material taken from the classes and will not be restricted to the topics and textbooks indicated in this syllabus, which serves predominantly as a guideline to thecourse.

StudentConduct&Discipline The University of Texas System and The University of Texas at Dallas have rulesandregulationsfortheorderlyandefficientconductoftheirbusiness. It is the responsibility of each student and each student organization to be knowledgeable about the rules and regulations which govern student conduct and activities. General information on student conduct and disciplineiscontainedintheUTDpublication,AtoZGuide, whichisprovided toallregisteredstudentseachacademicyear. The University of Texas at Dallas administers student discipline within the procedures of recognized and established due process. Procedures are defined and described in the Rules and Regulations, Board of Regents, The UniversityofTexasSystem,Part1,ChapterVI,Section3,andinTitleV,Rules onStudentServicesandActivitiesoftheuniversitysHandbookofOperating Procedures.Copiesoftheserulesandregulationsareavailabletostudentsin the Office of the Dean of Students, where staff members are available to assiststudentsininterpretingtherulesandregulations(SU1.602,972/883 6391). A student at the university neither loses the rights nor escapes the responsibilities of citizenship. He or she is expected to obey federal, state, and local laws as well as the Regents Rules, university regulations, and administrative rules. Scholastic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, statements, acts or omissions related to applications for enrollment or the award of a degree, and/orthesubmissionasonesownworkormaterialthatisnotonesown. As a general rule, scholastic dishonesty involves one of the following acts: cheating,plagiarism,collusionand/orfalsifyingacademicrecords.Students suspectedofacademicdishonestyaresubjecttodisciplinaryproceedings. EmailUse The University of Texas at Dallas recognizes the value and efficiency of communication between faculty/staff and studentsthroughelectronicmail. At the same time, email raises some issues concerning security and the identityofeachindividualinanemailexchange.Theuniversityencourages all official student email correspondence be sent only to a students U.T. Inattemptingtoresolveanystudentgrievanceregardinggrades, evaluations, or other fulfillments of academic responsibility, it is the obligation of the student first to make a serious effort to resolve the matter with the instructor, supervisor, administrator, orcommitteewithwhomthegrievance originates (hereafter called the respondent). Individual faculty members retain primary responsibility for assigning grades and evaluations.
