Montcalm County Sheriffs deputies
are looking for the person(s) responsible
for a late night home invasion that oc-
curred in Richland Township. At 0445
hours the morning of, Friday, August 12,
Montcalm County Sheriffs deputies re-
ceived a 911 call from a homeowner who
was awoken by a strange noise and his
dogs started barking, when the home-
owner went to investigate he determined
that the door was open and items had
been taken. He observed fresh footprints
leading from his house on his deck.
During the course of the investigation
deputies determined that several other
homes in the area had possibly been at-
tempted to be entered however deputies
believe that the doors were locked and
the suspects were looking for unlocked
homes. At this time deputies feel that
the suspect(s) are on foot and are cur-
rently searching the area for additional
evidence and leads to the capture of the
suspect(s). Montcalm County Sheriffs
detectives were also called to the scenes
and a K-9 team was deployed in the area
to assist. Sheriff Barnwell reminds citi-
zens to secure their homes and vehicles,
keeping windows and doors locked and
report suspicious activity immediately by
calling Central Dispatch at 989-831-5253
or 911. Montcalm County Sheriffs depu-
ties and detectives are being assisted by
Home Township Police Department and
a K-9 team from Mid-Michigan Working
Dogs.

Pine Grove Community Church, 8775
E. 88th St in Howard City is pleased to
present John Shear in concert on Sunday,
September 4 at 6PM. He is a well known,
Christian music recording artist from the
Grand Rapids area and has been featured
as a soloist in previous years at Pine Grove
Church.
John and his wife, Joan, are the par-
ents of three children and fve grandchil-
dren. He was born and raised in Grand
Rapids and presently resides in the area.
Throughout his singing career John has
sung in many churches, weddings, funerals
and special celebrations, and has traveled
to several different states to sing, as well.
As a member of a mens quartet for several
years, John had the opportunity to travel
to England and Scotland, sharing the Good
News of the gospel. John says, I give glory
to God for this great gift of singing, and feel
very blessed to share His word with count-
less people through song
Please join the Pine Grove family and
welcome John Shear in concert on Sun-
day, September 4. A free will offering will
be received in support of the 2011 Summer
Concert Series at Pine Grove Church. For
more information, please visit www.pine-

Mrs. Stancliffes Rose Cottage Bed & Breakfast has
been successful for many years. Her Guests, played by
Kathy McFarlane, Shirley Corner and Cathy Rombouts,
(all women) return year after year. Her next door neigh-
bor, the elderly, silver-tongued, Bud Bud the Stud Da-
vis, played by Ted Mitchell, believes they come to spend
time with him in romantic liaisons. The prim and proper
Mrs. Stancliffe, Linda Hunt, steadfastly denies this, but
really doesnt do anything to prevent it. She reluctant-
ly accepts the fact that Bud the Stud is, in fact, good
for business. Her other neighbor and would-be suitor
Henry Mitchell, portrayed by Don Hunt, is a retired
chemist who has developed a blue pill called Venusia,
after Venus the goddess of love, to increase the libido of
menopausal women. The pill has not been tested.
Add to the guest list three older women: Victoria
Ambrose, a romance novelist whose personal life seems
to be lacking in romance; Hillary Hudson a friend of
Henrys who has agreed to test the Venusia: and Char-
maine Beauregard, a Southern Belle whose libido does
not need to be increased! When Bud pops some of the
Venusia pills, the fun begins, as he attempts to enter-
tain all three women! The women replace Buds Viagra
pills with the Venusia, and we soon discover that it has
a strange effect on men: it gives them all the symptoms
of menopausal women, complete with hot fashes, mood
swings, weeping and irritability! When the mayhem set-
tles down, all the women fnd their lives moving in new
and surprising directions.
Opening night is Friday, August 26th, with shows
also on Saturday, August 27th and the following week-
end, September 2 and 3 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10
adult and $8 for seniors. Give yourself a break from
every day life; come and enjoy this hilarious show in air
conditioned comfort!

NORTH AMERICAN PRECIS SYNDICATE
While most parents tend to concentrate on
whats going into their youngsters brains while at
school, it may be a good idea to give some thought
to whats going on the kids backs on the way to
and from school.
Backpacks are a popular and practical way for
children and teenagers to carry schoolbooks and
supplies. Theyre designed to distribute the weight
of the load among some of the bodys strongest
muscles. When used correctly, backpacks can be
a good way to carry the necessities of the school
day.
According to the American Academy of Ortho-
paedic Surgeons, improperly used backpacks may
injure muscles and joints. This can lead to severe
back, neck, and shoulder pain, as well as posture
problems. Moreover, backpacks that are too heavy
or are worn incorrectly can cause serious, some-
times lasting, musculoskeletal problems for chil-
dren and teenagers. Experts recommend that chil-
dren carry no more than 10 to 20 percent of their
body weight. It is a myth, however, that heavy
backpacks will cause scoliosis, a sideways curve of
the spine that often shows up in adolescence.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety
Commission, in 2010, nearly 28,000 people were
treated in hospitals, doctors offces, and emergen-
cy rooms for backpack-related injuries like strains,
sprains, dislocations and fractures.
Choosing the Right Backpack
To help your family use backpacks safely, con-
sider these tips.
When choosing a backpack, look for some of
the following features:
nWide, padded shoulder straps
nTwo shoulder straps
nPadded back
nWaist strap
nLightweight
Injury Prevention
To prevent injury:
nAlways use both shoulder straps.
nTighten shoulder straps so that the backpack
weight is distributed properly.
n Lift properly, with knees and abdominal
muscles.
n Pack light and urge your child to pack only
essential items and books.
What Else You Can Do
Parents should encourage their children to re-
port any discomfort that may be caused by a heavy
backpack.
You may even want to talk to the school about
lightening the load and letting students stop at
their lockers throughout the day.
If your child has back pain that does not im-
prove, consider getting a second set of textbooks
to keep at home.
Learn More
You can learn more about backpack safety
from the experts at the American Academy of Or-
thopaedic Surgeons, who would rather prevent
than treat injuries sustained from heavy backpack
lifting. They can be reached at www.orthoinfo.org

The pizza place. How about the tale of Jeffrey
Mitchell, a meter man for the City of Detroit. In
February, 2009, Mitchell went to Happys Pizza
to read the meter. Happys meter is in Happys
basement which is where Mitchell, the meter
man, met his match, or, rather, needed one.
No matches. The basement was dark. No lights.
Nothing marked what was where. And Mitchell
must not have had his ashlight that day because
he later said he couldnt see. In these circum-
stances I question Mitchells thinking for decid-
ing to walk across the room to look for a meter.
But somehow Mitchell found the meter.
An uncovered manhole. Below the meter was
the uncovered manhole that Mitchell didnt see.
As a result, Mitchell fell into the manhole and
broke several ribs, his knee and the ligaments
that hold his knee in place. He completely tore
his front cruciate ligament, and the meniscus
the cushy pad under the kneecap. In that mo-
ment, Mitchells meter man status and his means
of income disappeared. During recovery a Work-
ers Compensation claim paid him benets, but
Workers benets can be limited.
Rotten Recovery. Eight months later Mitch-
ell was still being treated for his injuries. Hed
had surgery to rebuild and repair, but his knee
wasnt xed. He couldnt work any more. Doc-
tors say he will need knee replacement. Mitchell
led a lawsuit in Wayne County Circuit Court
against Happys corporate owner, its franchise
holder, and the building owner. As with many
negligence claims, Mitchell claimed that the de-
fendants knew, or should have known, that the
dark basement had an uncovered manhole in it.
He said their failure to warn him of that known,
dangerous and unobvious open manhole consti-
tuted negligence, for which they should com-
pensate him.
Whats compensation? Typically a plaintiffs
lawyer argues the worth of lost function and
damage, like Mitchells physical loss of mobil-
ity, limited exibility and ongoing pain, in terms
of loss of or change in your way of life. Mitchell
has loss of ability to walk and run as he did be-
fore the fall, to swim, play tennis, go canoeing,
play with his children or grandchildren, chase
after his dog, dance with his daughter all these
and many more of lifes ordinary tasks forever
changed. And he suffers pain now, something
new. More importantly, hes now permanently
unemployed.
Whats a knee worth? Whats a job worth?
How many dollars would you be willing to take
in exchange for the normal use of your leg? Add
surgery for a new body part? Add giving up your
job with no comparable job in sight? At the end
of mediation, Mitchell and Happys agreed the
worth was more than a half million dollars, and
the workers compensation insurance carrier was
good for about another $100,000. But my ques-
tion is this: Whats a meter man doing in a dark
basement without a really big, standard issue,
super glow ashlight-lantern? Maybe Mitchell
should have sued the City of Detroit for failure
to provide a ashlight.

NORTH AMERICAN
PRECIS SYNDICATE
Every homeowners to-do list
will vary by the weather cool
and rainy, sunny and dry but
from indoor to outdoor projects,
it is important to prepare your
home for weather changes and
make the transition easier on
yourself and your home. Here,
from an assortment of experts,
are a few must-dos to prepare
your home for cooler weather:
1) Beautify Your Fireplace.
When temperatures drop, many
families light up the freplace to
relax and wind down from the
day. Before you do, be sure to
follow these cleaning tips. Make
sure the foor around the fre-
place is well covered with drop
cloths. Mix a solution of high-
alkaline cleaner and one ounce
of chlorine bleach per gallon of
warm water. Wet the surface of
the freplace well with the solu-
tion, but dont use so much that
it runs. Dirty water running
down the face may cause hard-
to-remove streaks. Scrub the so-
lution in with a brush and rinse
well. If youre not comfortable,
you may want to call in a profes-
sional from Merry Maids.
2) Keep Your Floors and
Furniture Looking New. The best
way to keep the look of your decor
is very simple keep up with the
cleaning. ServiceMaster Clean
experts recommend performing
the following tasks consistently
to enhance and maintain your
home: Vacuum regularly, dust
your foor, respond to spots im-
mediately, deep clean carpets
once a year, deep clean and treat
hard-surface foors, and rid up-
holstery of oils that soil.
3) Feed Your Lawn. The
experts from TruGreen know a
little preparation with your lawn
and landscape can go a long way.
Late summer to early fall is the
right time to feed your lawn
to ensure its health and vital-
ity. Lawns recovering from heat
stress require the proper blend
of nutrients to become thicker
and develop a better root sys-
tem. Heat-stressed lawns also
need fertilizer in order to com-
plete their growing season with
healthy grass and a pleasing ap-
pearance.
4) Scale Away Pests. Ro-
dents and insects will stick
around in cooler weather, car-
rying harmful bacteria into
your home through cracks and
crevices. To protect your home
against the nuisance, experts
from Terminix advise placing
weather stripping on the bottom
of all exterior doors to ensure
they seal tightly. Use caulk to
seal any holes or cracks in your
home. Eliminate cracks or open-
ings around pipes and utility
lines that enter the home. Make
sure to close the fue damper
when the freplace is not in use.
Move piles of frewood and oth-
er debris away from the homes
foundation. Trim tree branches
and shrubs away from the house
so rodents do not have access to
your roof or other entry points in
the homes exterior.
5) Check Your Heating
System. Before fring up your
heater, the experts at American
Home Shield recommend having
an annual system maintenance
service performed at least a
month before the heating season
begins. Other steps you can take
to ensure proper heating include
moving furniture that has been
placed over foor vents to clear
the airfow, checking your flters
every month to ensure effcient
operation, and visually inspect-
ing your exhaust vent for rust,
damage or deterioration.
6) Prepare Your Plumb-
ing System. Plumbing is like any
other machine: It requires basic
maintenance to remain func-
tioning properly. Insulate pipes
prone to freezing, such as those
near an outside wall, those in
unheated areas of your home or
any exposed plumbing such as
outside faucets. Keep your water
meter box covered with its lid
and wrap outdoor or crawl space
pipes with electric heat tape or
insulation to prevent freezing.

Mermaid or a Whale???
Recently, in a large city in France, a poster featuring a young, thin and tan woman appeared in the window of a gym.
It said, This summer, do you want to be a mermaid or a whale?
A middle-aged woman, whose physical characteristics did not match those of the woman on the poster, responded
publicly to the question posed by the gym.
To Whom It May Concern:
Whales are always surrounded by friends (dolphins, sea lions, curious humans.) They have an active love life, get
pregnant and have adorable baby whales. They have a wonderful time with dolphins stufng themselves with shrimp.
They play and swim in the seas, seeing wonderful places like Patagonia, the Bering Sea, and the coral reefs of Polynesia
and Hawaii. Whales are wonderful singers and have even recorded CDs. They are incredible creatures and virtually have
no predators other than humans. They are loved, protected and admired by almost everyone in the world.
Mermaids dont exist. If they did exist, they would be lining up outside the ofces of Argentinean psychoanalysts due
to identity crisis. Fish or human? They dont have a love life because they kill men who get close to them. Therefore,
they dont have kids either. Not to mention, who wants to get close to a girl who smells like a sh store?
The choice is perfectly clear to me: I want to be a whale.
P.S. We are in an age when media puts into our heads the idea that only skinny people are beautiful, but I prefer to
enjoy an ice cream with my kids, a good dinner with a man who makes me shiver, and a piece of chocolate with my
friends.
With time, we gain weight because we accumulate so much information and wisdom in our
heads that when there is no more room, it distributes out to the rest of our bodies.
So we arent heavy, we are enormously cultured, educated and happy. Beginning today, when
I look at my butt in the mirror I will think, Good grief, look how smart I am! I am comfortable
with who I am and enjoy it.
This amusing piece made me smile. It is so true. We are all conditioned that everyone needs
to be Skinny Minnie. Granted, people who are over weight do have more health issues and our
goal is to help by nding ways to overcome the excess weight if it is a health risk for the patient.
But it is equally important to be who you are and to accept your body the way it is and love that
body because it is the only one you have. The stress of always trying to be something you are not
is also damaging to your health.
