Describe the role of the Tokugawa family in Japan and explain why they eventually lost power The

Tokugawa clan was a powerful family in which ceased control of the country and set out to rule Japan forever. Their way of remaining in control was to keep Japan exactly how it was when they first came into power. The Tokugawa clung to power for over 200 years but by the middle of the 19th century the Tokugawa reign was coming to an end. Major change in Japan came about because of the gradual replacement of the barter system with money. The merchants who understood how to use money better than anyone else eventually became very wealthy and powerful and naturally wanted things to change. They resented being looked down upon and they thought they would become wealthier if Japan opened to overseas trade. Describe the power struggle between the Japanese army and the elected Government in Japan. A powerful group of officers said the emperor really wanted the armed officers to rule Japan but the politicians believed that power should be in civilian hands. This struggle for power took place during the depression when the economy was down. Japanese army officers blamed the politicians for poverty in Japan which gave them a reason to justify the massacre of many politicians. Extremism occurred which lead to the league of blood, there was a complete over throw of the government and politician then began to cooperate with the army out of fear. The killings reached a peak in 1936; politicians were continuously being assassinated until the emperor decided to take action. 13 Murderous army officers where executed, however Japans army continued their power struggle and eventually took control of Japan completely. Explain the word Nationalism. Why do you think Nationalism was a driving force behind Japans reign of power? Nationalism is to have a sense of pride for your country, where you come from. Nationalism was a driving force behind Japans reign of power because as nationalism grew Japanese leaders thought of building an overseas empire. They believed it would be something to be proud of, it would help Japans industries by providing raw materials and markets, it would provide Japanese people with places to migrate and it would make Japan equal, perhaps even superior to the West.

What were Japans first three wars? Were the Japanese victorious or defeated? Japans first three wars where short and successful, in 1894 was the Sino Japanese war; a quick victory over China gave Japan control over Korea and Taiwan. Japans second war took place in 1904 which was the Russo- Japanese war. It was another quick victory for Japan, but over Russia this time. Japans third war was in 1914-18, it was the First World War. Japan went to war on the allies side and as a reward took German colonies in China and in the Pacific for itself.
