Dr See Kin Hai UniBridge Course Objective The purpose of this module is to expose students to a range of quantitative information and methods of investigation as well as basic skills of IT, so that students are confident to apply them in an academic context. This module aims to ensure that all students have a general appreciation of basic mathematical, statistical and data handling techniques; ensure that all students have adequate practical knowledge of the use of communication and information technology; enable all students to develop subject-specific and transferable skills in mathematics and the use of communications and information technology for managing information and sharing purposes. Module Content: Mathematics as a language; the uses of statistics in daily lives; describing relationship quantitatively; summarizing quantitative information with graphs, tables and statistics; interpreting graphs and tables; Interpreting statistics and quantitative approaches to analyzing and investigating social and scientific questions. IT skills in understanding the principles of file creation, management and storage; obtaining, storing and transmitting information from a number of electronic sources, including accessing library catalogues and databases, Exploring the internet such as social networking tool and web blog as a sharing and research tool, and using e-mail to send and receive messages and files; using word processors in written assignments, such as essays, reports, and be able to format and lay out documents; using spreadsheets to carry out basic calculations and to produce charts and graphs and importing data, charts and graphs from spreadsheets into word processed documents. Critically examine the evidence presented by others by using quantitative methods and the ability to use IT as a tool to communicate this both orally and in writing to a wide audience.
