CURRENT AFFAIRS JAN 2011 - 6 (SBI Rs.2,828 crore)
SBI profit up 14 % at Rs.2,828 crore in Q3: State Bank of India (SBI) recorded a net profit of Rs.2,828
crore for the third quarter ended December 31, 2010, up 14.08 per cent over Rs.2,479 crore in the
corresponding period in the previous year despite increase in provisions by Rs.1,797 crore (84.02 per
cent).

T K Kurien is Wipro's new CEO:
The country's third largest software firm Wipro on Friday said T K Kurien will replace Girish Paranjpe and
Suresh Vaswani as chief executive officer of the IT business, a move that is aimed at simplifying its
organisational structure.
Paranjpe and Vaswani, current joint CEOs of the IT business, will step down on February 1, 2011.

Kisan Bapat Baburao Hazare (born 15 January 1940), popularly known as Anna Hazare, is an Indian social
activist who is especially recognized for his

contribution to the development of Ralegan Siddhi, a village in Parner taluka of Ahmednagar district,

Mumbai, May 18 (IANS) Coins of 25 paise denomination, popularly known as 'paavli' or 'chaar anna', will
be withdrawn from June 30, the Reserve Bank of India announced here Wednesday.

'The coins of denomination of 25 paise and below will cease to be legal tender from June 30. These will
not be accepted for exchange at bank branches from July 1, 2011 onwards,' the RBI said in a statement.

The central bank appealed to the people to exchange stocks of these coins at the branches of banks
maintaining small coin depots or at RBI offices around the country.

The exchange facility for these coins shall be available till the close of business hours June 29, 2011.

The decision comes in the wake of the Section 15A of the Coinage Act, 1906, by which the central
government had decided to withdraw the coins of denomination of 25 paise and below from circulation
from June 30, 2011.

action to ensure that people win this battle. Anna Hazare ...has decided to give a final and decisive push
to Janlokpal by announcing his indefinite fast from 16th August. India needs to be awakened to come
out on streets on 16th August. Its time to walk the talk!

We invite friends who would like to lead/organise/coordinate a March from their own city.

HOW AND WHEN
August 1 to August 10

A mass mobilization programme across the country in the form of long marches is being planned
starting August 1. These marches will originate from different cities and city coordinators are requested
to plan one starting from their own city. For instance, the first march will start from Delhi on August 1
and end in Meerut (55 km) on the next day. Civil society leaders like Arvind Kejriwal will participate in
this march. Several marches have already been planned in different cities of UP (starting from their own
cities and culminating in Lucknow/Kanpur). In Maharashtra a march is being planned from Pune to
Ralegan Sidhi.

LOGISTICS AND PREPARATION
A person can easily walk upto 25-35 kms in a day. Keeping this fact in mind and the time at your hand,
plan a march of 50-200 km (2-8 days), work out the route/itinerary and inform us. Sole objective of this
march is to make people aware of this historic movement and to urge them to participate in it actively.
You will need some posters/banners and pamphlets for the march. Many of you already have these, in
case you dont, we will send you the files and you can get them printed as per your convenience.

While marching, make sure you have regular stopovers where you can interact with local people. Try to
walk as much as possible during the morning and evening while keep the afternoon for rest and
relaxation. Also, do share your plan with the local media, once you have informed us of the plan, we will
push it in the national media in Delhi.

Politicians of all colours regularly undertake such walks for power and support, but this time India will
walk for a better and corruption-free India!!! Spread the word.

At least eight people have been killed and 70 others injured in three bomb blasts that rocked Mumbai
on Wednesday evening in the crowded Dadar, Opera House and Zaveri Bazar areas, police sources have
said.

Union Home Ministry confirmed that the blasts are terror strikes and added that Improvised Explosive
Devices were used at all the three locations.

The blast at Dadar took place in Kabutar Khana, in the two-storey JK Building at Tata Road No. 1 in Opera
House and at Khaul Gali in Zaveri Bazar.

Wednesday blasts took place just two days after the fifth anniversary of the Mumbai serial train blasts
on July 11, 2006 in which at least 186 persons were killed.

The blasts took place within minutes of each other with the first being reported at 6:50 PM in south

Mumbai's Zaveri Bazaar, near the famous Mumbadevi temple, in which some people were injured, said
Mumbai Police spokesperson Nisar Tamboli.

The second explosion was reported in a taxi in Dadar area, he said. "We are verifying the nature of
explosions. At this moment I cannot say anything more than this," Tamboli said.

India's latest communication satellite, G-SAT 12, will be launched today from the Satish Dhawan Space
Centre (SHAR) in Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh on 15 July 2011.

The satellite will be launched using the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) with the lift-off window
scheduled between 4:48 pm and 5:08 pm. K Radhakrishnan, chairman of the Indian Space Research
Organisation (ISRO) said "the countdown has already started and we expect the rocket to lift off at 4.48
pm."
For the present mission, PSLV-XL, a more powerful version of the rocket, would be used for the launch.

GSAT-12, weighing 1,410 kg and equipped with 12 Extended-C band transponders, will augment
communication capabilities in telemedicine, tele-education and telephone and other services.

In PSLV-XL version, six extended solid strap-on motors carrying 12 tonnes of solid propellant in total are
being used as against nine tonnes in a standard PSLV variant, Mr Radhakrishnan said.

The cost of the rocket is Rs. 90 crore while the satellite, GSAT-12, costs Rs. 80 crore but both are not
insured.

This is the second time such a powerful configuration had been deployed, after it was used to put
Chandrayaan-I into orbit in 2008.

For the PSLV, this will be the 19th mission with the last 17 flights proving successful. This is the second
PSLV launch this year after the PSLV-C16 in April when the rocket lofted Resourcesat-2 and two other
micro satellites into orbit.

Two more launches of the PSLV are expected later this year.

The ISRO was forced to use the PSLV as its other launch system, the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch
Vehicle (GSLV), is out of commission due to repeated failures.

Kevin Mitnick, often incorrectly called by many as god of hackers, broke into the computer systems of
the world's top technology and telecommunications companies Nokia, Fujitsu, Motorola, and Sun
Microsystems. He was arrested by the FBI in 1995, but later released on parole in 2000. He never
termed his activity hacking, instead he called it social engineering.
November 2002

Englishman Gary McKinnon was arrested in November 2002 following an accusation that he hacked into
more than 90 US military computer systems in the UK. He is currently undergoing trial in a British court
for a "fast-track extradition" to the US where he is a wanted man. The next hearing in the case is slated

Russian computer geek Vladimir Levin effected what can easily be called The Italian Job online - he was

US hacker Timothy Lloyd planted six lines of malicious software code in the computer network of Omega
Engineering which was a prime supplier of components for NASA and the US Navy. The code allowed a
"logic bomb" to explode that deleted software running Omega's manufacturing operations. Omega lost
$10 million due to the attack.

Twenty-three-year-old Cornell University graduate Robert Morris unleashed the first Internet worm on
to the world. Morris released 99 lines of code to the internet as an experiment, but realised that his

The Melissa virus was the first of its kind to wreak damage on a global scale. Written by David Smith
(then 30), Melissa spread to more than 300 companies across the world completely destroying their
computer networks. Damages reported amounted to nearly $400 million. Smith was arrested and
sentenced to five years in prison.
2000

MafiaBoy, whose real identity has been kept under wraps because he is a minor, hacked into some of
the largest sites in the world, including eBay, Amazon and Yahoo between February 6 and Valentine's
Day in 2000. He gained access to 75 computers in 52 networks, and ordered a Denial of Service attack on
them. He was arrested in 2000.

They called themselves Masters of Deception, targeting US phone systems. The group hacked into the
National Security Agency, AT&T, and Bank of America. It created a system that let them bypass long-
distance phone call systems, and gain access to the pbx of major carriers.
