Team Composition: Maximum of 4 students, from any branch and any college.

Stages in the eventSubmission of Write-Up: Every teams is required to produce a write-up describing the basic idea employed in designing and building the tailless aircraft . Appro ximate aircraft parameters must be mentioned. Realization of the constraints on the aircraft parameters must be highlighted in the design.Originality in the des ign will be the basis for selection of teams for the event. Presentation: Selected teams will be invited to compete at Shaastra. Every team must give a power-point presentation (ppt) which will be judged by a panel of ju dges. The presentation should incorporate the idea, adherence to constraints, a ircraft parameters and uniqueness of the design. In a nutshell your presentation s must be informative and prove your worthiness. Flight Testing: The airplane should consist of the features mentioned during the presentation failing which the teams lose certain number of points. Each team w ill be given a fixed number of trials. Teams should note that that place where f light testing will be done is an open area surrounded by trees. Thus changes in wind conditions may occur. The teams must fabricate their glider keeping this po int in mind. "Download the TDP Template" Files: Wright Design Version-1 Wright Design TDP Template For further queries contact us at : wrightdesign@shaastra.org FAQs 1: Who can participate? A: Students from any college/university can participate.

2: Do I need a team or can I participate individually? A: Yes, you can participate individually. But we encourage you to have a team of atleast two. The team can have 1,2,3 or 4 students.

3: I have graduated from a college and am currently not a student. Can I partici pate? A: No. Only people with a valid Shaastra ID card can participate in an event and the ID card will only be issued to students. 4: How can I register for this event? A: The registration is done through the Shaastra userportal. Register as a user and you can access the forum in the helpdesk. More details on the team registrat ion will be updated soon.

5: What about the write-up? How do I send it? A: A registration form along with template for write up will be uploaded soon. K eep checking the Registration space for updates.

6: Can I use a kit or a ready to fly model? A: No. We encourage you to build your own glider. Anyway, there are very few gli der kits available and their control system is different from the one required b y the problem statement.

7: Can I participate in only the design round without building a glider? A: No. You must build a glider, display it during the presentation and fly it du ring the flight test round. A team without a glider will be immediately disquali fied.

8: How will the glider fly without a motor? A: The glider will be launched by a catapult. The launch gives it some velocity and altitude (height). Drag on the glider would reduce the velocity, so the gli der has to slowly descend (reduce height) to maintain its velocity. Gravitationa l potential energy is converted into kinetic energy. A gentle descent gives good glide performance.

9: Can the rules, event format or scoring change? A: While we try our best not to change anything we have mentioned, anything abo ut the event may change if we find a flaw. You are advised to keep checking the website for updates. Updates shall clearly be mentioned.

10: How do we contact the co-ordinators? A: Check the email id provide at the top of this 'Queries' section. You can cont act us through this regarding any doubts or queries. 11: Can I use more than one battery? I cannot use a single battery to provide th e required 5V to the receiver. A: Any number of cells may be used, i.e. combined in series or parallel, to make a battery. LiPo batteries with multiple cells may be used. A LiPo battery with 2 cells in series can provide 7.2V. The restriction is to connect this battery ( made of single or multiple cells) to only the receiver and not any other device on the glider. The servo receives power from the receiver and needs no separate power source.

There are pretty good books & research papers on Tailless and/or Flying Wing gli ders available on Internet & you can search for the same on Google & other searc h engines to get information about the same. Also you can refer to the book 'Kar l Nickel and Michael Wohlahrt,, Translated by Capt. E. Brown RN,, Second Edition -1996 Tailless Aircraft in Theory and Practice , AIAA, Education Series' & 'Resear ch Papers on Horten Gliders' which will be really helpful for making such glider s. At the same time, we here will be providing you with some of the resources(see b elow for the files) which we thought might be useful for your participation, but please kindly note that we won't be held responsible if you don't find it usefu l for your glider making.
