Arianna

15 year old Arianna was the last person to discover a pocket of ground water; which didn't last very long because the sun evaporated it within minutes of discovery. People, nor scientists, ever expected the Hydro Omen to occur this early. The year is 3024, and the Earth is expected to survive for a few more years until it plummets into the sun. The lakes, rivers and oceans are almost completely depleted. For Arianna the discovery of the underground pocket of water was unlucky. She knew she should've waited until night to prevent the evaporation. For this mistake, she was scolded when she returned home. After, she silently slid into her room, waiting for the sun to go down. The moon finally dominated the sky sometime

after midnight. Arianna climbed out her window and started walking towards the place she uncovered the water. When she got there, she started digging in the same spot carefully, so the water wouldn't disappear into the atmosphere. After a while, Arianna gave up and sat on a rock, looking at the sky, and fell asleep. Arianna woke up to see a dark object in the sky. A cloud, she thought, it will probably disappear soon though. Arianna walked home, and she noticed that the cloud had not gone. Instead, it had grown 3 times as large. The plants outside of Arianna's house were old and wilted from their use of transpiration. Her mother was outside looking at the cloud curiously. The last time I saw a cloud like this was way back when. I reckon it was your 13th birthday. She said. Arianna looked up to the sky, and something fell on her cheek. It was cold and moist. She turned to her mother with wide eyes, who was looking up.

It's a miracle! Her mother cried. They rushed inside the house, as it began to precipitate. Inside, her mother told her how the water system works. You see, when the sun comes out, it evaporates the water by heating it out of streams, oceans, and anywhere else, even glaciers. From there, the water vapor is up in the sky, getting heavier and heavier. It then forms a cloud. If it freezes, it will fall as snow. Then, it rains into the oceans, and streams, and rivers. Sometimes as run-off- There was a big boom outside. Arianna and her mother looked out the window, it was pouring and lightning was flashing. They turned the T.V. On and watched the news. Would you just look at this rain? It's pouring! Well, if we look at our charts, it should start to sleet. We advise everyone to stay indoors until it stops. Arianna turned and saw her mother holding a bowl out the window, collecting water. That night they had all the foods that they couldn't without that much water.

The next day Arianna woke up and looked outside her window. There were large chunks of hail on the ground, and ice crystals hanging down from the roof. Arianna walked downstairs and turned on the T.V. on. These rains have been great, but in some areas it's flooding. It would be best to get to higher grounds, such as New Upper City. She went upstairs to wake up her mother. She whispered to her what she heard. Go pack your bags, less than three. Arianna went to her room and got her two duffel bags out. She packed her pajamas, her clothes and some shoes. Afterwords, she met her mother at the door. They walked out to the front, and saw a shuttle floating up the street. It stopped in front them, and the door opened. You two heading for New Upper City? The bus driver said. They nodded and climbed onto the bus. They found an empty section and sat. Arianna

started to draw on the condensated window. The percolating water outside was constantly being replaced. This cycle of rain will never end,she though. Arianna pressed her head to the window, wishing for thermal energy to come into action, but it didn't. The bus filled with more people, desperately trying to reach the city. They were all in panic, but Arianna stayed calm; her mother was asleep. The bus finally came to a stop, and everyone rushed off. Arianna woke up her mother, and they got off. They rushed to get to the closest hotel. Arianna and her mother got a room in a hotel and took showers when they got there. They laid their clothes to dry, and Arianna went to the roof of the hotel. She looked over the city. Not far below, she could see a small spec of what was the ocean. She strained her eyes to see what was happening. From afar, she could see a massive wave come, and swallow the city. Arianna's heart sank. She couldn't return to her home, not now. She looked behind her and saw some people, who began to scream,

Tsunami!. They started shrieking and ran back into the hotel. Arianna ran back to the room and found her mother. We need to leave now, Arianna spoke up to her mother. Arianna's mother looked up at her wide-eyed. They got their things and left the hotel. They ran to the docks (they were once used, before the drought). There were people crowding around, they were yelling and shouting. Mothers and children line on here, and get on this boat. Said a big man. People started to scramble over there. Everyone started to panic, and at this point the were screaming. Someone grabbed Arianna and some other kids saying, Get the kids on board!. She was pushed onto a boat. Arianna searched for her mother, and found her in the crowd trying to get on. Someone in the crowd started shouting, Tsunami! Tsunami! The big man on the boat looked down, and cut the line. The kids began to cry for their parents, and Arianna cried with them.

The boat was five feet from the dock, when a massive wave came into sight. It covered the city, and the dock. The man put the boat into high speed as Arianna put her hand out in a pathetic attempt to grab her mother. She looked up and saw the wave crash upon everything in it's sight. After hours of traveling on the boat, the rain came to a stop. The clouds broke and the sun came out... Only it wasn't as close. Arianna looked around, most of the kids were sleeping or eating. The big man turned from a group of kids and handed her a sandwich. We'll be stopping at a city far up. The estimated amount of survivors is 2,000. He told her. Arianna sat quietly on a bench with her sandwich. A boy came up to her and sat next to her. My name is Vince, he said. My name is Arianna, she said. They talked and talked, and somehow Arianna knew everything would be all right.
