All ABOUT ScHOOl lUNcHES

Mission Statement Texas Public School Nutrition Policy
The Nutrition Services Department at Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District is committed to providing a nutritious meal to every child. By providing children of our community with quality food and service, we are valuable partners in education. Our efforts as professionals in child nutrition will further the growth and success of our students, staff and community. The Texas Department of Agriculture Nutrition Policy prohibits parents from bringing outside lunch meals for students other than their own child. It also prohibits competition of any food product or sale during the school day. For detailed information visit or contact TDA at (888) TEX-KIDS or www.squaremeals.com.

Classroom Birthday Celebrations

What Is A reimbursable meal?

GCISD participates in the National School Lunch Program and receives reimbursement and donated commodities for each lunch served. In return, the district must serve meals that meet meal pattern requirements. GCISD selected the traditional food based meal pattern. Lunch consists of five components: meat or meat alternate fruit vegetable bread or bread alternate milk It is strongly recommended that students take all five components (a complete lunch) for optimal nutrition. A complete lunch consists of 1 Entre, 1 or 2 servings of fruit or vegetable (no duplicates), 1 bread serving, and pint of milk. However, students must select at least three of the five components for the meal to be counted as a reimbursable meal. Keep in mind, students may choose fewer than three items, but these will be charged on an a la carte basis. GCISD utilizes the Offer vs. Serve as a serving method in order to allow students the flexibility of choosing their meal. A choice of White Milk, Chocolate or Strawberry Milk is offered at all meals. All are non-fat.

Classroom birthday celebrations may not be served in the cafeteria where meals from the Nutrition Services Department are being served and consumed. Birthday celebrations must take place in the classroom or in the cafeteria after all meals have been served. See your principal for campus guidelines.

The Nutrikids Accounting System

Nutrition Services maintains accountability standards with a computerized system by Nutrikids. Students may prepay for meals for any number of days in advance before school or during meals. Once your child is enrolled in school and has received his or her 6-digit ID number, you may prepay for meals at the school cafeteria with a check, cash or online with a credit card. Visit the Nutrition Services website for instructions for credit card online prepayments at www.gcisd-k12.org. Students receive a 4-digit meal code which allows them to access their account. Purchases of breakfast, lunch, or a la carte items are deducted from the account when the student uses his or her meal code. The computer keeps a comprehensive record of prepayments, daily purchases and charges. Parents can access student account information including transactions and payments at www. mynutrikids.com. This information is password protected. Each student has his or her own meal account. Meal codes are confidential and should not be shared. Discrepancies in student accounts need to be reported to the Nutrition Services Department immediately. Refunds or account adjustments will only be considered within the last 30 operating days from the date the discrepancy is reported.

You will need to monitor your childs meal account to ensure that they always have a positive balance. Students who do not have a positive balance will only be allowed to charge a school meal. The following procedures will be used to notify you of your childs balance. A stamped NEEDS MEAL MONEY on the back of the hand indicates approximately two days meal allowance remaining. The ink is nontoxic and will wash off. (You may choose NOT to have your childs hand stamped by indicating this on the Note on Meal Account Form available on the district website) Cafeteria Managers will send home a note when the students account has approximately one days meal allowance remaining. Cafeteria Managers will send home a second note when the students account has a negative balance. After the third notice, if payment has not been received, you may receive a phone call from a Nutrition Services staff member inquiring about payment. Please Note: Until your childs information is downloaded into the Nutrikids software system, your childs account will not be accessible for prepayments and you will need to send meal money on a daily basis.

Foods of Minimal Nutritional value (FMNv)

Check Acceptance for Meals

The district follows the United States Department of Agriculture guidelines regarding Foods of Minimal Nutritional Value. For detailed information visit www.squaremeals.com. These foods may not be served at school: All carbonated beverages Frozen water ices Sweetened waters Chewing gum Candy coated popcorn Certain candy (hard candy, jellies and gummies, marshmallow candies, fondant, licorice, spun sugar candy) These items may not be served at school parties unless designated as one of the three exemption days determined by the campus for a specific celebration. Please check with your childs teacher to determine which holidays will be celebrated. Students may bring these items in their lunch, but they may not distribute or share items designated as Foods of Minimal Nutritional Value with other students.

Checks must have the following: 1. A pre-printed name and address (no temporary checks accepted) 2. The current date 3. Written to the name of the school cafeteria or Nutrition Services 4. The students name or 6 digit student ID number written in the memo section

Breakfast at School Breakfast is served at the following schools:

ELEMENTARY: Cannon, Dove, Timberline, Bear Creek, Silver Lake, Glenhope MiDDLE SCHOOL: Cross Timbers, Grapevine, Heritage The cost for breakfast is $1.00. The cost for students paying reduced-price is 30. Milk and Juice are served daily at breakfast. Cereal, toast, and fruit are available daily as a Breakfast Choice.

returned Checks with Insufficient Funds (NSF)

am te it! pir S

In the event that a check written to Nutrition Services is returned unpaid by your bank, GCISD or its agent will redeposit your check electronically. NSF checks are sent to Check Smart Recovery to be processed on behalf of the District to collect the unpaid amount and returned check fee(s). You may contact Check Smart at 1-888-851-6634 to remedy this matter.

Benefits of eating Breakfast! Eating breakfast can help improve math, reading, and
standardized test scores. Children who eat breakfast are more likely to behave better in school and get along with their peers than those who do not. Breakfast helps children pay attention, perform problemsolving tasks, and improves memory. By eating breakfast, students get more of important nutrients, vitamins and minerals such as calcium, dietary fiber, folate and protein. Studies have shown that children who eat breakfast on a regular basis are less likely to be overweight. Eating breakfast as a child is important for establishing healthy habits for later in life. What you eat for breakfast can have an impact on learning. One study showed that eating breakfast food high in fiber and low in sugar for breakfast helped students sustain the cognitive effects of breakfast. February Kiwi Fruit

october Squash

Squash was one of the Three Sisters planted by Native Americans. The Three Sisters were the three main native crop plants: maize (corn), beans, and squash. Squash can be served fresh and cooked. Winter squashes (such as butternut, Hubbard, buttercup, ambercup, acorn, spaghetti squash and pumpkin) are harvested at maturity, generally the end of summer, cured to further harden the skin, and stored in a cool place for eating later. They generally require longer cooking time than summer squashes.

The kiwi fruit, often shortened to kiwi in many parts of the world, is an edible berry. The Chinese are credited with growing the first kiwi fruit, which were called Chinese gooseberries. Most kiwi are oval, and about the size of a large hens egg. Kiwi has a fibrous, dull brown-green skin and bright green or golden flesh with rows of tiny, black, edible seeds. The fruit has a soft texture and a unique flavor, and today is a commercial crop in several countries, mainly in Italy, New Zealand, Brazil, Chili and China. Kiwi fruit is a rich source of vitamin C and potassium.

March Tomato Juice

November Bell Peppers

In 1492, Columbus and his explorers discovered sweet and hot peppers in the West Indies and took samples back to Europe. Peppers quickly became popular in Europe, where they were eaten whole, made into spices and used as condiments. Peppers are still used in these ways today. Bell Peppers are sometimes called sweet peppers and can be green, red, yellow, or orange. Green peppers are less sweet and slightly more bitter than red, yellow or orange peppers.

Tomato juice is a juice made from tomatoes. Tomato juice was first served as a beverage in 1917 by Edgar Berman at a hotel in Indiana because he ran out of orange juice and needed a quick substitute. Tomato juice contains the antioxidant lycopene. Scientific studies have suggested that lycopene consumption may protect against certain cancers and heart disease.

April Mushrooms

December Pomegranate Juice

The pomegranate fruit is actually a large berry, between the size of lemon and a grapefruit, with a rounded hexagonal shape. The pomegranate has thick reddish skin and around 600 seeds in each fruit! Pomegranates can be made into juice which can be very sweet or sour. Pomegranate juice is a good source of vitamin C, vitamin B5, potassium and antioxidants. Scientists are studying pomegranates for its cancer-fighting and heart health benefits.

A mushroom is the fleshy, spore-bearing fruiting body of a fungus, typically produced above ground on soil or on its food source. Many species of mushrooms seemingly appear overnight, growing or expanding rapidly. This phenomenon is the source of several common expressions in the English language including to mushroom or mushrooming (expanding rapidly in size or scope) and to pop up like a mushroom (to appear unexpectedly and quickly). Raw dietary mushrooms are a good source of B vitamins, such as riboflavin, niacin and pantothenic acid. They are also a good source of selenium, copper and potassium. The white button mushroom is an edible variety grown on farms -- it is the most common commercially grown mushroom and is safe to eat.

January Snow Peas

May/June Nectarine

The snow pea is a legume. It is a variety of pea eaten whole in its pod while still unripe. The name may come from their tendency to grow at the end of winter, just before the last spring freeze; in fact, snow peas can be covered with snow but still keep growing well. Snow peas are a great crop for the soil. They provide nitrogen to the garden and help other plants grow well. Snow peas are good for people, too! They provide vitamins A and C, iron and potassium.

Nectarines are similar to peaches. The best way to identify peaches from nectarines is the fuzz. Peaches have a fuzzy skin, but nectarines lack fuzz. Nectarines, like peaches, most likely originated in China more than 2,000 years ago and were cultivated in ancient Persia, Greece and Rome. They were grown in Great Britain in the late 16th or early 17th centuries, and were introduced to America by the Spanish. Today, California grows over 95% of the nectarines produced in the United States. The word nectarine means sweet as nectar, and this is likely the origin of the name.
