IN THE NEWS
Childrens play house set alight VANDALS set fire to a childrens wooden playhouse in Chester Road, Kelsall, last month. Constable Steve Trow, who put the fire out, is urging people to report these sorts of incidents to him in future. Call Cheshire Constabulary on 0845 458 0000. Opposition to Tarporley development A PUBLIC meeting has taken place to discuss plans to build 80-100 new homes on a site off Nantwich Road, Tarporley. Approximately 500 signatures have been gathered in opposition to the scheme by the Tarporley Greenfield Awareness Project. Parish councillors have also opposed the project as it is outside the area designated for development in Tarporley. Martyn Twigg of developers FLP, said: Concerns mainly related to the principle of the development on the site and traffic issues. There is a huge housing shortfall in Cheshire West and Chester and an identified need for 115 affordable homes in Tarporley over the next five years. This development will go a significant way to helping provide affordable homes for local people.

Calling all Desperate Housewives!

How many hours a week do you devote to looking after your children and running the household? According to a recent survey, we can spend up to 70 hours a week doing just that. Its a job description that would deter even the toughest applicant, with no holidays and no pay, and according to this survey we work longer shifts than a Junior Doctor! Many of us continually juggle our domestic life with full time work and it takes much planning to keep everything running smoothly. I should know, my eldest daughters are 31 and 29 and my youngest is about to go off to University. Thirty-one years of juggling, many of them as a single mother and working full time. So I think I can say I understand how tough things can be!

Can we help reduce this pressure in your life?

The Bunbury Agency was established over 43 years ago by my mother when she herself could not find suitable child care for my two sisters. In those days it was not unusual for wealthier families to have a live in Nanny, whether they worked or not. Today things are very different, particularly in the present economic climate. Yes, most of us want to, or have to work, and paying for child care or domestic help can use up much of what we earn. We are expected to be superwomen, so what is the solution?

Why not book an Au Pair?

An Au Pair is a single male or female between 17 and 27, who comes to live with a family in the UK in order to improve their English. They can stay for up to two years. Whilst they are not qualified child carers, they usually have experience in looking after their own siblings and babysitting other children. Au Pairs may work for 25 - 35 hours per week, helping with your children and performing some light household duties in return for their accommodation and some pocket money, usually between 70 100 per week, a very cost effective way of relieving the pressures on working mothers.
The Bunbury Agency is a member of BAPAA (the British Au Pair Agencies Association) and recruit Au Pairs in line with their code of practise, which ensures that they are thoroughly vetted in line with Home Office regulations.

TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER

l We are pleased to hear that the Rotary Club are planning another series of films shows at the Community Centre this autumn and hope that they will be well supported. Details will be found on the Rotary Notice Board, by the Rising Sun.

How do we create more parking in the town centre?

AugusTs resurfacing of the High street a very welcome improvement for road users and the subsequent closure of the road, has highlighted to our local traders just how much they depend on shoppers who come from outside our village. Our traders do not just depend upon local people who walk to the shops. This leads us to consider the need to have adequate, and even more, parking in Tarporley if we are to have a local economy which can sustain a high street with a range of local shops. It is very unlikely that more land will come available to be able to create more parking spaces, as any such land is much more likely to be used to build houses after all that is where money can be made. All this leads us to consider having time limited parking on High street, with sections of the road providing parking for say 1 or 2 hours. The needs of people who live and park on High street would need to be catered for. However none of this is possible until parking in Tarporley is l As you may have seen in several editions of decriminalised, as it is in the areas that were our local paper, people are greatly concerned covered by the old Chester City Council. such about the idea that the land off Nantwich Road decriminalisation means that parking restrictions may become available for the building of 80 would be enforced by the local authority, not the 100 new homes. We expect that the people police. involved will put in for planning permission in Our local Council, Cheshire West and Chester, is september so please watch out for this in the considering this approach and the Parish Council local press and on our village notice board and is interested to hear the people of Tarporleys send your views to the planners at Cheshire West views. Please contact the Clerk or one of the and Chester Council. Parish Councillors details on the next page. 10 To advertise call 01244 350398

Dance fever returns as Strictly hits the screens

WITH a new season of Strictly Come Dancing just around the corner, there are plenty of rumours as to whos joining the hit BBC1 show.
Its already been widely publicised that Jared Murillo (who was worse than some of the celebrities) is being replaced by So You Think You Can Dance USA dancer Pasha Kovalev who specialises in Latin American. Claudia Winkleman wont be able to return as presenter of weekday show It Takes Two, as she is due to give birth a few weeks before the series starts in autumn. Filling in for her will be 2005 Strictly contestant and self confessed dancing fanatic Zoe Ball. The list of celebrities taking part is a closely guarded secret but there is a suggestion that The One Shows Alex Jones is rumoured to be the first celeb to sign up, her predecessor Christine Bleakley took part in Strictly in 2008 and finished in fifth place. There is also talk that the line up will include astrologer Russell Grant. Producers think the astrologer would offer great comedy value and become a viewers favourite, just like former Tory MP Ann Widdecombe did last year. BBC have also reportedly asked 54 year old former Countryfile presenter Miriam OReilly to return to the fold and compete on the 2011 series of the show after she successfully sued BBC bosses for age discrimination, when she was dropped as host and replaced by glamorous star Julia Bradbury, 40. Who Wants to be a Millionaire host Chris Tarrant is also thought to be in talks with Strictly Come Dancing bosses to head this years line-up. If you cant get enough of the show and want to learn to dance, theres never been a better time. With absolute beginners classes starting in September, the team at Dancebasics will have you dancing in no time. Check out our advert or visit the website www.dancebasics. co.uk for our classes in Tarporley and South Cheshire. And in the words of Bruce and Tess, keep dancing!

Christian does the double

A member of the Richard Jones Schools of Taekwondo has done the double at the Welsh National Taekwondo Championships.

Christian Farrall won gold in the yellow belt patterns division and then went on to win gold in the Sparring division. He also won gold in patterns at the English Championship earlier in the year. After watching the sparring at the English championships Christian asked if he could enter the sparring as well in the next national, said instructor Richard Jones. So to get double Gold in his 1st National Championship was great and he is now training hard for his next Championship. Pictured with Christian is club instructor Richard Jones after winning the Black Belt Patterns division. Visit www.tarporleytkd.co.uk.

Amy goes the distance

Distance runner Amy Hinchly has had a brilliant year this year both in Cross Country and in 1500m. In October at the Chester & District Cross Country Amy came 1st running in the Junior section where she was running against many Yr9s. She then went on to represent the District at the Cheshire Cross Country Championships in January where she once again achieved first place. This meant she was then representing Cheshire at the English Schools Championships which also took place in January, managing to come in the first 100 placings, which was a remarkable achievement as she is one of the younger competitors. In June she represented the District at the Cheshire Athletics Championships at Macclesfield, again being one of the youngest competitors in the Junior section, and where she achieved 2nd place. She then went on to represent Cheshire at the Inter Counties Championships, coming 4th with a PB of 4m 56 secs, with this she was reserve for the English Schools Championships. At the Chester & District Athletics Championships on July 5th she won the 1500m with a new Championship record of 5m 11 secs. 26 To advertise call 01244 350398

Sixth form charity

The school council present a cheque to the Chester Committee for Deaf People

A presentation made to the Tarporley War Memorial Hospital

SIxTH formers at Tarporley High School and Sixth Form College raise a great deal of money for charity through a range of events such as car washing, a fancy dress day and the annual Valet Day where younger students bid to buy a Sixth Form helper for the day. The Sixth Form Council decided last year that instead of donating all raised money to a single charity that as many charities as possible should benefit. This year the school has four students who have bid for money to help them undertake 38 To advertise call 01244 350398 38 To advertise call 01244 350398

conservation work in Peru and the Amazon through the British Schools Exploring Society. Funds are also use to support local causes with 255 being recently presented to the Chester District Committee for Deaf People and 275 to the Tarporley War Memorial hospital. Additionally, the students are always keen to support their school and local community and volunteer throughout the year to complete community work.

SIxTH FORM COLLEGE

Test of faith
Year 9 students recently encountered the Harmony Group, an interfaith organisation in West Cheshire working for community cohesion in the area. The group are volunteers from different faith and belief groups who meet regularly and visit primary and secondary schools. The visit consisted of an Anglican vicar, a Muslim, a Hindu, a Quaker, a Bahai representative and a Humanist. They worked with six groups of students, informing them a little about their own beliefs and experiences and then fielded some challenging questions from the students. The day culminated in a Question Time style assembly, where the speakers emphasised the importance of interfaith dialogue, while stating their beliefs and views on a range of topics.

Vauxhall visit Widening the students understanding of the business world is important in helping them to make decisions about their university courses. The sixth formers were recently treated to a visit from Vauxhall who gave a fascinating and eye opening talk on the opportunities available at Vauxhall and other manufacturing organisations, such as the assembly of cars, careers in the human resources department and the design of motor vehicles. The main activity put students in the shoes of a Vauxhall team and gave them the task of buying materials and assembling paper cars and vans! This led to heated competition between the teams.

health & beauty

with Angela Bartlett

Q. Why do I need to exfoliate? A. Well, strictly speaking the skin exfoliates or desquamates itself. The skin produces about 1 million skin cells every 40 minutes and as each new cell is produced in the basal layer of the skin it displaces the older cells above it upwards and outwards until they slough off at the surface of the skin. However, these superficial skin cells dont always fall off effectively, particularly as we age or if our skin is oily, so regular exfoliation helps to remove the superficial dead skin cells to give us a brighter, fresher, smoother and clearer complexion. To find out how exfoliating different types of exfoliators are visit the newsletter page at www.angelabartlett.co.uk Q. Is acne the same in adults as it is in teenagers? A. There will be similar characteristics and problems, but acne in adulthood is more likely to be inflammatory and often combined with sensitivity. Teenagers usually have a more uniformly oily skin than adults and more blackheads are usually evident. The breakouts in adults tend to be more prevalent around the chin and jaw and with breakouts being more widespread in teenagers. To find out more about the four main biochemical triggers for acne visit the newsletter page at www.angelabartlett.co.uk

Angela Bartlett has over 26 years of experience in the beauty and holistic industries. She is the Immediate Past Chairman for BABTAC representing almost ten thousand therapists in the UK. spencer scores a hit with TV ad tune

FORMER Tarporley resident Spencer Hickson is having a Yell of a time after his music was chosen for a nationwide advertising campaign. Spencer Hickson and musical collaborator David Fletcher, producers from North West Label Tactal Hots Music, were specially commissioned from a long list of established artists to produce the exclusive music for the new Yell TV advertising campaign. The Yell advert was a modern twist on the iconic J.R. Hartley Yellow Pages advert, featuring Day V Lately searching for his trance record from 1992. After searching numerous record stores, his daughter brings him to the modern age, and suggests using the Yell mobile app. We needed a tune that could stand up to the big tunes of the day. We called Spencer Hickson and David Fletcher, music producers and DJs whose music has been played since the 90s by big-name DJs such as Sasha and John Digweed. The real artistry here was to ensure the track felt technically like a 92 track. We needed someone who knew what constraints existed back in the day and what constituted a great tune, said Ed Morris, Creative Partner, at Rapier advertising agency. Spencer and Davids track has sold over 6000 downloads to date, at its peak the original version was selling over 1000 a week and reached the Top Ten in the iTunes dance chart in the 1st week. Another man on a mission is Day V Lately, the fictitious DJ in Yell.coms remake of the 1983 Yellow Pages JR Hartley ad, seen scouring Londons second-hand vinyl stores for a 12-inch he recorded back in the day. Spencer, who now lives in Nantwich, said: The project enabled me to revisit many of my earlier musical influences and dust off the vinyl, it brought back some amazing memories of the early scene. I knew we needed a vocal to give it that extra edge, so I brought in Lauren Griffiths an up and coming singer and good friend of mine, and she didnt disappoint. Off to Oxford Hebe Middlemiss, of Tarporley, is off to Oxford to study Biological Sciences following outstanding A Level results. Amy aims high

Amy Cadman, from Bunbury, and Tessa Morrison, from Kelsall, are hoping that they have a good head for heights when they take part in a trek to the base camp of Everest. Amy and Tessa have been busy raising funds over the last few months for the trip which Amy describes as a once in a lifetime experience and one heck of a challenge. After undergoing some gruelling training over the summer, the duo will fly out to Nepal later this month with the aim of climbing up to the 17,590ft at the base camp of Everest. Amy said: To say I am nervous would be a massive understatement! They are doing the trek for Childreach International, who work with communities in some of the worlds poorest regions, strengthening childrens access to health care, education, child rights and protection. They are hoping to raise a combined total of nearly 5,000 for the charity. Amy added: Any contribution, no matter how small, would be greatly appreciated; its for a fantastic cause! TARPORLEY WAR MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

LEAGUE Of fRIENDS
DO YOU KNOW.... that after the 1914-18 War, the people of Tarporley decided that they wanted a cottage hospital as their War Memorial. Funds were raised by public subscription and the house in Park Road was purchased and converted into a hospital. It was maintained by donations and public subscription until 1948. Many local people remember being treated at the hospital in their younger days. DO YOU KNOW.... that in 1948 when the National Health Service started, the hospital was taken over as an NHS hospital. After a few years, the NHS were selling off all the smaller hospitals in Cheshire and then, at last, they wanted to sell Tarporley War Memorial Hospital. DO YOU KNOW.... that the people of Tarporley and District said NO. It is a War Memorial Hospital and it should not be closed. After a hard fight, it was agreed that much of the land attached to the hospital should be sold and the hospital was brought back from the NHS and became an Independent Hospital Trust. DO YOU KNOW.... that the hospital is supported by a) a limited amount of funding from the NHS to cover some of the services offered b) interest on investments which are administed by the Hospital Trust Board c) money raised by events held by the League of Friends d) donations and legacies from the public. The investment interest is inadequate in the present financial climate and many expensive items are purchased by the League of Friends

If you value the services offered by this hospital YOUR SUPPORT TO THE HOSPITAL IS URGENTLY NEEDED

HoT Colours for sEPTEmbEr

sEPTEmbEr is a good month for flamboyant and brightly coloured flowers and more subtle colours for those who prefer them. Here are some of my favourites. Dahlias have a variety of flowers shapes but I like the larger blooms such as the cactus flowered varieties. Dahlias like rich, moisture retentive but well drained soil, in sun to do their best. Once they have finished flowering and the first frosts start, cut off the remaining foliage and dig up the tubers to store in a dry, frost free place overwinter. You can leave them in the ground over winter but if they freeze, the tubers may well die back and you will need to buy new plants next year. Lobelia cardinalis is a perennial that likes damp soil and has scarlet flowers on tall stems that will light up an autumn border. If you like quieter colours and have dry, well drained soil and sun, consider the small shrub Perovskia. This has grey green foliage and spikes of light blue flowers. They should

be pruned in spring by cutting the previous years growth back hard to about 2 to 3 buds as they flower on growth made in the same year. The ever faithful Japanese Anemone will flower for weeks and this year has started flowering almost a month earlier than usual. They take time to establish but will cover the ground and smother most weeds. Helianthus Lemon Queen is another favourite with lots of pale yellow daisy like flowers on stems up to 1.5m tall if grown in moisture retentive soil. One shrub that is at its best in September is Hibiscus syriacus or tree hollyhock. Slow to start off, these shrubs like a sunny position and will have hollyhock like flowers in white, pink or blue. Try Hibiscus Blue Bird or Woodbridge for a late show of flowers for weeks. If you have a pond, then cover it with netting to prevent leaves falling into the water and rotting. Lawns can be re-turfed or sow grass seed when the weather is wet. Also rake out dead grass and moss from the lawn in September.

Peckforton & Beeston WI

There was no meeting in July; instead we had this summers outing on 6th July. Our trip was to Boundary Mill in Lancashire followed by a visit to Gawthorpe Hall. It was difficult to get everyone back on the coach at Boundary Mill as there was so much to see and buy. However we all found the beautiful Elizabethan house fascinating and were enthralled by the exhibition of historical needlework housed on the first floor. Our chosen speaker was unable to attend our 3rd August meeting. Fortunately she provided a replacement in Gay Rhodes who is a popular after-dinner speaker and chose the title That Certain Age for her talk. We could all empathise with her humorous anecdotes and many were in fits of laughter for much of the time. Names were taken for a theatre trip to Stoke to see Legally Blonde in September and details of the next walk along the Whitegate Way were provided. Our next meeting on 7th September will include a talk on falconry at Peckforton Castle and will be given by Mark Birdsall. New members are always welcome to meetings at the Peckforton Village Rooms on the first Wednesday of the month starting at 7.30pm. Did you spot him? He is behind the Hibberts advert on page 40
