Installing and Replacing

Lets Commit to Recycle More

The City of Griffins recycling rate dropped to 16% last month, while the amount of garbage going to the landfill soared to 84%. This is the lowest the recycling rate has been since the inception of the recycling program in 2007. Every item diverted from the landfill helps the City to control costs and save in disposal fees. We need your help. Make a commitment to recycle more and trash less. Every little bit helps.

Griffin Powers Linecrew has been tremendously busy working on the Kentucky Data Link (KDL) project. This project began in January of this year and was completed in mid August. The project consisted of changing out poles in several areas within the city such as S. Hill Street, Solomon St., Experiment St., and 14th Street. These streets were closed temporarily during early morning and afternoon hours as crews began to replace old poles with new ones. In addition to completing the KDL Project, the Linecrew installed new Automatic Switches at Spalding Regional Medical Center. In the event the hospital experiences an outage the automatic switches will open and transfer the hospital to an alternate circuit within 12 seconds. This lessens the outage time and ensures the hospital that during an outage they can still fully function amidst the circumstances

Holliday Exhibit opening soon

Through a generous grant from the Georgia Humanities Council, the City of Griffin will soon be opening a new Doc Holliday Exhibit at the Griffin Regional Welcome Center. The new exhibit will explore Docs life, while trying to differentiate the man from the myth and the movies. It will also note Griffin locations associated with Doc Holliday. The reveal and ribbon cutting will be in late October, to coincide with Doctober Days. Be on the lookout for details!

Top Back to School Safety Tips

Here are some simple reminders for drivers: Slow down and be especially alert in the residential neighborhoods and school zones Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully Watch for children on and near the road in the morning and after school hours Reduce any distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings. Put down your phone and dont talk or text while driving Motorists are reminded to stop both ways for school buses loading or unloading students and watch for students walking to and from bus stops.

Strongest Link in the Chain Award of Excellence

While there is plenty of Back-to-School safety advice to keep in mind, some of the most important tips tell us how to travel safely near school buses when theyre picking up or dropping off students. This is so important! Georgia law tells us what to do when a school bus activates its swing-arm stop sign and red flashing lights: Obey the Stop Arm. If theres a median between the traffic traveling in opposite directions, only vehicles traveling in the same direction as the school bus are required to stop when the bus stops. But if no median is present between traffic lanes heading in opposite directions, drivers on both sides of the roadway must stop when a school bus activates its swing-arm stop sign and red flashing lights to load or unload passengers. Passing is prohibited on either side of a school bus during passenger pick-up or drop-off.

Will Stevens July Link in the Chain

Will Stevens is the Senior Ground Lineman for the GriffinSpalding County Airport (GSA). His job, on the surface may seem routine, but he helps to ensure the safety of the pilots, crews and passengers that pass through the GSA each year. His duties are varied and they include but are not limited to airport vehicle, fuel delivery system, and navigational aid maintenance. He ensures the Air Methods Life Flight operation and the Spalding County Sheriffs Department Aviation Unit have the fuel and delivery equipment they need to conduct their respective public safety missions. And when the ancient equipment that he maintains does eventually falter, even if at 2:30 am, he responds to provide repairs and/or alternate resources ensuring their primary mission is unaffected. Will routinely saves the airport valuable time and money by figuring out ways to correct problems that arise without going to outside vendors or contractors for costly repairs. He has repeatedly repaired the numerous airport vehicles and equipment. On the occasion when repairs do require outside help, on his own initiative, he coordinates repairs and service with other agencies or departments to resolve the problem. Will also maintains the aviation fueling systems ensuring their continued operation. Regardless of weather conditions he monitors the supply levels and initiates re-supply at predetermined re-supply points through the airports aviation fuel vendor. Will continuously monitors and conducts daily, weekly and monthly quality assurance checks on the fuel within the GSA system. Will is a valuable member of the GSA team. His contributions are key in the overall success of conducting and accomplishing our mission in providing the safest and most efficient airport facility possible.
