What is Islam?
Islam is not a new religion , but
the same truth that God revealed
through all His prophets 10every
people. For a fifth of the world' s
population. Islam is both a religion
and a complete way of life. Musli ms
follow a religion of peace, mercy,
and forgiveness, and the majori ty
have no thi ng to do with the
extremely grave events which have
come to be associated with their
faith.
Who are the
Muslims?
On e bi Uion people from a vast range
of races, nati onalitie and cultures
across the globe - from the
southern Philippi nes to Nigeria-
arc uni ted by their common I larnic
faith. About 18% live in the Arab

What do Muslims
believe?
Muslims believe in One, Unique,
Incomparable God ; in the Angels
created by Him; in the prophets
through whom His revelations were
brought to manki nd ; in the Day of
Judgement and individual account-
abi lity for actions; in .od's complete
authori ty over human desti ny and
in life after death. Muslim believe
in a chain of prophets starting with
Adam and including I oah, Abra -
ham, Ishmael, I aac, Jacob, Joseph,
Job , Moses, Aaron , David, olornon.
Elia . Ionah, John the Baptist , and
Jesus, peace be upon them. But
God ' final message to man , a recon-
firmat ion of the eternal message and
a summi ng-up of all that has gone
before was revealed to the Prop het
Muhammad ;:- through Gabriel.
How does someone
become a Muslim?
Simply by sayi ng ' there is no god
apart from God, and Muhammad
is the Messenger of God .' By this
declara tion the believer announces
his or her faith in all God 's me sen-
gers. and the scrip tures they

What does 'Islam'
mean?
The Arabic word ' Islam' simply
means ' submission' , and de rives
fro m a word mea ni ng ' peace' . In a
religious context il means complete
submission to the wi ll of God.
' Mohammedan ism' is thus a misn o-
mer because it suggests tha t Mus-
lims worsh ip Muhammad rather
than God. ' Allah' is the Arabic name
for God, which is used by Arab
Muslims an d Christia ns alike.
Why does Islam often
seem strange?
Islam may seem exotic or even
extreme in the modem world . Per-
hap s this is because religion docs
not dominate everyday life in the
West today, wh ereas Muslims have
religion always uppermost in their
minds, and make no division
between secular and sacred. They
believe that the Divi ne law, the
Shari'a,should be taken very ser-
iously, wh ich is wh y issues related
to religion are still so importan t.
Do Islam and
Christianity have
different origins?
No. Toge ther wit h Judaism, they go
back to the pro phet and patri arch
Abraham, and their three prophets
are directly descended from his sons
- Muhan;mad from the eldest ,
Ishma el, and Moses and Jesus
from Isaac. Abraham estab lished the
settlement which today is the city of
Makkah, and buil t the Ka' ba
towa rds which all Muslims turn
when they pray.

There is no hi era rchical aut hority in
Islam, and no priests , so the prayers
are led by a learn ed pers on who
knows the Qu ran, chosen by the
congregation. The e five prayers
conta in verses from the Qu ran, and
arc said in Arabic, the language of
the Revelation , but personal suppli-

language.
Prayers are said at dawn, noon,
mid -aftern oon , sunset and nightfall,
and thu s det erm ine the rhythm of
the enti re day. Although it is prefer -

women?
( lam sees a woman , wh ether sing le

the groo m to the bride for her own
personal use, and she keep s her own
family name rather than taking her

Both men and women are
expected to dr ess in a way which is

[-]ow do Muslims
treat the elderly?
In the Islam ic world there are no old
people's homes. The s train of caring
for one' s parents in thi s most diffi-

an honor and blessing , and an
opportunit y for great spiritual
gro wth. God as ks that we not on ly
pray for our parents, but act wi th
limit less compassion, remembering
that when we were helpless children
they preferred us to themselves.
[oth ers are par ticular ly honored :
the Prophet .: ~ taught that ' Paradise
lies at the feet of mothers' . When
they reach old age, Mu slim pa rents
are treated rn erci fullv, with the same
kindness and selfles sness.
In Islam, serving one 's parents is a
du ty second only to pr ayer, and it is
their right to expect it. It is con

their own, the old beco me di fficult.
