HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
Savages want a shot at
the league title
Practice, balance on both sides make team strong this season
By John Contreras
The Lamar Ledger
The Lamar High School
football team kicked off
the 2011 season with a
30-7 home victory over
the Trinidad Miners
on Aug. 26 at
Savage Stadium.
The Savages will
find out where they
stand as they face a
pair of worthy
opponents in their
next two
preseason games.
Lamar will host
Burlington this
Friday, Sept. 2. The
Cougars are the
defending Class 1A
state champions and
have beaten the
Savages since the
series was renewed
in 2006.
Following the
game with
Burlington, the
Savages will host
Kent Denver on
Sept. 10. The Sun Devils
reached the Class 2A state
semifinals last year before
falling to Brush.
Lamar head coach Jason
Tice and his assistants
welcomed over 60 players out
for this years team. Every
season, coaches have to deal
with the loss of key senior
players to graduation and the
Savages will have some gaps
to fill.
Coach Tice feels the
Savages will possess a
balanced attack on offense and
the defense will be the
strength of the team.
I really feel that we have a
very versatile team, said Tice.
We have a team that I feel
can run the ball as well as
throw the ball with a lot of
success. Our defense should
be solid.
On offense, the Savages
return Branson Jennings, a
6-2, 225 senior, under center at
the quarterback position.
Hell be joined in the
backfield by another senior
Erik Nieschburg, a 5-9, 180
senior, at tailback.
New faces in the backfield
will be Jamin Tate, a 5-7, 165
junior, at Z-back and Gabe
Beard, a 6-0, 180 senior, at H-
back.
Also seeing playing time at
Z-back will be Haracio
Maldonado, a 5-8, 140
sophomore, and Justevin
Coberly, a 5-7, 155 freshman.
At the receiving positions,
Chris Flippin, a 5-10, 180
junior, and Kelby Fassiotto, a
6-1, 145 junior, will share duty
at the tight end position.
Casey Fassiotto, a 6-0, 160
junior, will be a big threat at
wide receiver.
The Savages offensive line
returns two starters anchored
by Tony Herrera, a 6-2, 275
senior, at quick guard and
Kaden Pierson, a 6-4, 230
junior, at strong tackle.
The duo will be joined up
front by Tylor Jara, a 5-11, 190
senior, playing the quick side
tackle and Santana Salazar, a
5-9, 215 freshman, playing the
strong side guard.

John Contreras The Lamar Ledger
Seniors Gabrielle Hammer and Audrey Parker will lead the Lady Savages on the volleyball court this season.
HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL
Team hopes experience pays off
By John Contreras
The Lamar Ledger
Lamar High School put a
young team on the volleyball
court last year under new
head coach Dave
Tecklenburg.
The Lady Savages finished
the regular season with an
11-7 record. In the postseason,
Lamar defeated Coal Ridge
and Salida before falling to
Roaring Fork in the District
tournament.
In the regionals, Lamar ran
into some stiff opposition as
they lost to Colorado Springs
Christian, Holy Family, and
Bayfield to end the season
with a 13-11 record.
Tecklenburg stepped down
as the head coach of the
program after accepting the
position as the Lamar School
District Superintendent.
Taking over the program
will be Amy Wertz, who
coached volleyball and track at
the Lamar Middle School.
Im really excited about the
opportunity to step in and take
over the high school
program, said Wertz. It will
be an interesting change for
the program just because we
do have all new coaches.
She said coaching the junior
varsity team will be Gary
Hammer and Kelsey Herrera
and coaching the freshmen
team will be Shellie
Melgoza.Wertz hopes the
varsity experience that the
young players gained last year
will play a key role in their
success of this season.
We have a great group of
girls and they have been
working hard, she said.
Were looking for good things
this year and the girls seem
excited.
Wertz will suit 10 players on
the varsity including two
seniors, two juniors, and six
sophomores.
Leading the way for the
Lady Savages will be Gabrielle
Hammer, a 5-9 senior outside
hitter. The other senior on the
team will be Audrey Parker, a
5-9 defensive specialist.
Jolynn Rider, a 5-10 junior
middle hitter, will also play a
big factor in Lamars hitting
attack. Jordan Schwartz, a 5-9
junior, will see playing time in
the back row as a libero.
Lamar returns a solid group
of sophomores led by Taylor
Wertz, a 5-4 setter and right
side hitter; Summer
Eberhardt, a 5-8 middle hitter;
Sarah Blain, a 5-5 outside
hitter; Lauren Tinnes, a 5-6
middle hitter; Regina
Westhoff, a 5-7 outside hitter;
and Katie Tecklenburg, a 5-5
setter and right side hitter.
Were going to rely a lot on
Gabrielle to be a leader for us
as well as Taylor, said Wertz.
Weve got a good sophomore
class with a lot of talent. Some
of those girls gained a lot of
valuable playing time last year.

Wertz is going to make

some changes and the Lady
Savages will run a new
offense.
We plan on running a 6-2
offense and working on more
options with our front row
hitting and not being so
predictable, she explained.
With the team still fairly
young, Wertz said the team is
eager to prove themselves.
The girls played together
most of the summer and the
chemistry is there, she said.
Weve got all the pieces and
its just a matter of putting it
all together. The girls have set
some high goals and want to
have more success this year. I
believe they will be more
successful.
The Lady Savages open the
season at Mantiou Springs on
Sept. 3 and then will host a big
match with nemesis St. Marys
on Thursday, Sept. 8.
Weve got all the pieces and its just a matter of
putting it all together. The girls have set some
high goals and want to have more success this
year. I believe they will be more successful.

HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER
Savages start second varsity season
Team to field young team
By John Contreras
The Lamar Ledger
After playing the first two
seasons at the junior varsity
level, the Lamar High School
boys soccer team got their
taste at the varsity level last
year.
It was a challenge, but
Miguel Roman, who returns
for his second season at the
helm, feels the experience his
team gained last year will be
helpful.
Last year was a learning
experience for myself as well
as my players, he said. The
teams were definitely a lot
better than at the junior
varsity level.
Roman has 20 prospects out
for this years team.
The Savages lost some key
senior players last year, but
Roman hopes he has the
players who are ready to step
in and lead the team to a
successful season. The
Savages won just six matches
We lost 12 seniors from
last year, he said. So, were
going to have a young team
with 10 freshmen on the
roster. What I like about this
years team is that everybody
is trying 100 percent in every
practice and thats what I like
to see.
Roman said the team is
going to try some different
strategies and hopes the hard
work in practice pays
dividends on the field.
I think the biggest thing
we need to work on is
communication on the field,
he said. Thats pretty much
what it is all about. The simple
things play a big key.
Senior Vidal Barajas will get
his
opportu
nity to
step in as
the goal
keeper this season for
the Savages.
Returning at one of the
defender positions will be
junior Santiago Chavez. Hell

and freshman Cristian

Leading the way at
midfielders will be senior
Kimo Muro, senior Reyes
Duque, junior Franciso
Rosario, and junior Fabian
Tovar.
The forward positions will
be manned by junior Miguel
Diosdado.
As long as we keep
working hard, well be all
right, said Roman.
What I like about this years team is that everybody is trying
100 percent in every practice and thats what I like to see.

LAMAR
HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL
New coach to guide teams season
Mindy McCoy
takes over
program
By John Contreras
The Lamar Ledger
Heading into the 2011
season, the Lamar High
School girls softball team
begins a new era under the
direction of new head coach
Mindy McCoy.
McCoy served as the
assistant coach for two years
under former head coach
Craig Forney.
Im really excited to have
the opportunity to step in and
take over the program, said
McCoy. I have a great group
of girls to work with and I
think it will be a good season.
The new coach inherits a
team that posted a 10-11
record a year ago. The Lady
Savages saw their season end
last year in the District 2
tournament where they fell to
the Rocky Ford Lady
Meloneers. Rocky Ford went
on to advance to the Class 3A
state semifinals where they
lost to Valley 8-3. Valley went
on to claim the state
championship with a 9-5
victory over Berthoud.
McCoy has 27 players out
for the team.
The Lady Savages return
their battery from last year in
pitcher Katie Crampton, a
junior right hander, and junior
catcher Vanessa Galindo.
Lamar graduated some key
seniors from last year so
McCoy has some gaps to fill in
the infield and the outfield.
Joining Crampton on the
pitching staff will be juniors
Chelsea Vallejos and Abbie
Reed who both saw some
work last year. Adding some
depth to the staff will be senior
Erica Dominguez from Holly
High School; freshman Demi
Ownbey from Springfield High
School; and Lamar freshman
Malea Orozco.
Reed returns as the only
starter in the infield where she
played short stop last year.
She will return to that position.
When not pitching,
Crampton will likely play first
base. Also seeing duty at first
base will be sophomore
Allison Sena. Playing second
base will be junior Tianne
Woodward and rotating at
third base will be senior
Brandi Thompson from Holly
and Amber Torrez from Wiley.
Playing in the outfield will
be Vallejos, Dominguez,
Ownbey, freshman Mireya
Aguirre, junor Abi Cruz from
Wiley, and junior Veronica
Jimenez from Granada,
It pretty much a new team
and things are going to be
different from last year, said
McCoy. We will be young
with only three seniors out,
but I dont think thats going
to be any problem for us.
Every one on the team is
excited to play and I think
well be a top competitor.
Lamar will compete in
District 2 when the postseason
playoffs roll around. The seven
teams in District 2 include
Lamar, Classical Academy,
Dolores Huerta, Florence, La
Junta, Rocky Ford, and St.
Marys.

HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY
Teams run in stride for success
By John Contreras
The Lamar Ledger
With some key runners
back in place, the Lamar High
School girls and boys cross
country teams are in stride for
a successful season.
Joe Harbert and Erik
Melgoza are back for their
fourth year as the head
coaches for girls and boys
teams respectively.
The Lamar girls team will
be comprised of eight runners.
Leading the pack will be two
seniors Susie Lira and Sydney
Crist. Lira is a Class 3A state
qualifier from a year ago.
Juniors on the team include
MyKinthia Ebron, Amy Jaime,
and newcomer Kim States
from Wiley High School.
Rounding out the team will
be three freshmen Ashley
Snyder, Payton Kee, and
Hannah Kalma, a runner from
Holly High School.
Im very optimistic this
year, said Harbert. We have
seven girls out and I think at
this stage of the game were
going to be pretty competitive.
Again, my aim is to get my
runners qualified for state.
Hopefully, we can pace them
and see them make it through
the season. Three miles is a
long ways to run. My girls are
not going to run in every
single meet. I try to pace them
out and gearing up for the
race that qualifies them for
state. Again, Im excited about
the season.
The Lamar boys team has
14 runners out for this years
team. Four seniors competing
for the Savages will include
Nolan Anderson, Philip
Binder, and twin brothers
Davis and Grant Haggard.
The roster will also include
five juniors: Dalton Bray,
Dakota Jara, and Anthony
LaTour along with Matthew
Aguilera and Eric Marquez
from Wiley High School.
Sophomores on the team
will be Josh Davis and Skyler
Collins. Rounding out the
team are freshmen Zach
Watson and Ben Ludwig.
Things are actually a lot
better than they have been in
the past, said Coach Melgoza.
Weve had some good kids in
the last four years but finally
we are able to run some
distances and some workouts
that we need to run. Were
tackling seven, eight, nine,
and 10 mile runs. Ive never
been able to do that before. I
think I would have turned kids
off about the third day of
practice if we tried to do stuff
like that.
Were looking pretty good
right now and Im pretty
excited, added Melgoza. I
have a super senior class and
theyre really providing the
leadership. Were looking
forward to some big things
from some of our younger
kids.
Melgoza noted that
Colorado Milesplit has named
Josh (Davis) as one of the
young runners to make some
noise and have a super career.
Josh did the extra work
this summer and went to an
invitation only Team Prep USA
camp, said Melgoza. He
came back super excited and
is in great shape and just
knocking out the workouts
right now. If we need to do
anything, we need to slow him
down and make sure he
doesnt get hurt.
Sykler Collins is a new face
on the team and comes from
Wiggins, Colo.
Skyler comes from a really
good program and hes been
looking good, Melgoza noted.
Anthony (LaTour) comes to

Panthers looks to continue climb
By Dick Peecher
The Lamar Ledger
The Wiley football program
made huge strides a year ago.
First, the Panthers broke a
two-year losing streak and
then they won their first
Arkansas Valley Conference
football game in three years
with an end of the season
defeat of the McClave
Cardinals.
Head Coach Dave Eastin is
back for his second year at the
helm after a return to Wiley
last year.
Most exciting for Eastin and
his staff are the numbers.
With 26 boys out, the
Panthers will field one of the
largest squads in the Ark
Valley.
We have some kids that
are excited. It is really nice to
have some bodies; with that
we can try to build our
program back to what it once
was, said Eastin.
Eastin will welcome about
half of his starters back from a
year ago. Six seniors will vie
for playing time this season.
The line will be anchored by
235-pound senior Chris
Turner. He will be joined by a
rotation of Zane Tempel,
Patrick Gonzales, and
Turners younger brother,
Keaton.
Seniors Omar Ayala,
Anthony Cruz, and David
Ybarra will all look for playing
time at the end spots.
Standout junior Kody
Wallace will spearhead the
offense at quarterback, as he
runs and passes well. Senior
Josh Madaris will be the
fullback, while fellow senior
Alex Mullins will get most of
the carries out of the Wiley I
offense. Junior Hayden
Stegman will get some playing
time in the backfield as well.
We know that we are still
building our program, but we
want to compete for four
quarters in every game this
year, said Eastin. We did get
the two wins, but too many
times we were blown out early
in our other games.
We want our kids to
understand what it takes to
compete in this league and
play tough, physical football
and be in every ball game we
play this season, continued
Eastin. We had a lot of kids in
our weight room this summer
and we were very happy with
that. We hope to see some
positive results from that.
In looking at the Arkansas
Valley Conference picture,
Springfield, Walsh, and
Granada are the teams to beat
with the Panthers, Holly, and
McClave looking to pull out a
surprise.
Seniors leading the way for the Wiley Panthers football team, l-r, Anthony Cruz, Alex Mullins, Chris Turner, David Ybarra, and Omar

Lady Panthers hope to step things up
By Dick Peecher
The Lamar Ledger
They have been among the
elite teams in southeastern
Colorado over the last couple
of years, but they want to take
it a step farther this year.
The Wiley Lady Panthers
have advanced to the Class 1A
state volleyball tournament
each of the last two years but
have failed to make it out of
pool play each year.
With five of six starters
returning, Wiley appears to
have the ammunition to do so.
Guided again by head coach
Audrey Bauer, the Lady
Panthers will have size, power,
and court quickness to build
around.
Twin towers, Teri Johnson,
a junior, and Taylin Spitzer, a
senior, will lead the way for
the Lady Panthers. With both
hovering near the 6-foot mark,
the athletic duo will be among
the top hitters in Class 1A
volleyball this season. Not far
behind is 5-9 senior hitter
Desiree Daniels.
Senior Kacey Wells returns
as the setter, and fellow senior
Erika Ragland, a four-year
starter at libero, will lead the
way in the back row.
Bauer will have good depth
as well. She will find her sixth
starter and good depth for the
back row among
underclassmen Brenna Cash,
Bailey Dodson, Sabra Perdue,
and Maggie Schneider,
Its a matter of not settling.
Not settling for just having a
good year, not settling for just
making it to state, said Bauer.
We have to have a purpose
this year; we have to have a
purpose each time we go out
to play. This team needs to
play with confidence but with
a hunger. We have had a very
good two weeks to open the
season.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
Bobcats loaded for successful season
Team older, stronger now,
looking to move up a step
By John Contreras
The Lamar Ledger
Its been several years since
the Granada Bobcats have
been on the top of the ladder
as the Class A Arkansas Valley
8-man Conference football
champions.
The past two seasons,
veteran head coach Manuel
Gonzales has had to throw in
some younger players in the
heat of the battle.
Those young players are
now juniors and Gonzales
hopes this is the year they can
take the season a little further.
Last season, Granada
finished third in the
conference with a 3-2 league
record.
In the cross-division
playoffs, the Bobcats lost a
close game to Swink, and
ended the season with a 4-5
record.
Its good to have a lot of
veterans back and it makes
my job easier, said Gonzales.
Last year was a learning year
for us. We took our lumps and
I hope our players learned a
lot from last years defeats and
wins. This years, we cant
make the excuse that we were
young. Weve got a lot of
experience but the biggest
question has to be at
quarterback.Gonzales lost
only one player from last
years team in two-year starter
and senior quarterback
Traegon Marquez.
Looking to fill the shoes at
quarterback will be Manuels
grandson Bryan, a 5-10, 155
junior.
Bryan was hurt last year
and didnt get a whole lot of
experience at the junior
varsity level, explained the
head coach. But hes the type
of kid who can pick it up fast.
Hes going to be the one who
is going to lead us.
Gonzales will also have to
find a new tailback with
returnee Saul Perez out for the
season with an injury.
Still the Bobcats will be
tough on offense with a
backfield that will include
Tony Esquibel, a 5-9, 185
senior; Caleb Harris, a 6-0, 180
junior; and Brynden Burns, a
5-9, 155 junior.
Losing Saul was a big loss,
said Gonzales. But I hope the
rest of the guys can pick it up.
Tony is a hard inside runner
and Caleb has got the speed to
break it all the way. Brynden
is also a tough hard nosed
runner.
The offensive line will be
spearheaded by center Sam
Rink, a 5-10, 205 junior and
rotaing at the guard positions
will be Brady Rink, a 5-10, 180
senior; Dillon Bohlander, a
5-10, 185 junior; and Chad
Holden, a 5-10, 205 junior.
The ends will feature Kolby
Palmer, a 5-10, 170 junior and
Brynden Burns.
Were going to have some
solid kids up front, lauded
Gonzales. So, Im pretty
confident we can do some
good things on offense.
On the defensive side, the
Bobcats will have a lot of
depth at many of the positions.
Gonzales can go with S.
Rink, Bohlander, and Holden
at noseguard. At defensive
ends will be Antonio Huerta, a
5-10, 185 junior, and Tanner
Grasmick, a 5-11, 185 junior.
The linebacking corps will
include Esquibel; Armando
Hernandez, a 5-9, 155
sophomore; and Juan Morales.
In the defensive backfield
will be Kolby Palmer, Harris,
Burns, and Koy Palmer, a 5-10,
155 freshman.
Again, we should be pretty
solid on defense, said
Gonzales.
Looking at the conference,
Gonzales said, Springfield
will be the team to beat.
Walsh will be tough but not
the team they were last year.
Holly, Wiley, and McClave are
rebuilding.
We have a veteran ball club
and we lost only one player,
Gonzales reiterated. Thats a
coachs dream. But well have
to prove ourselves and got out
there and play.

New head coach takes control
Granada graduate returns
for first head coaching role
By John Contreras
The Lamar Ledger
The Granada High School
volleyball team will begin the
2011 season under new head
coach Kara Dorenkamp.
Dorenkamp is no stranger
to the community and the
school. She is a Granada High
School graduate and a former
sports standout. This will be
her first high school head
coaching assignment after
coaching volleyball at the
junior high level in Granada
the last three years (all were
winning seasons).
Im very excited about
taking over the program, said
Dorenkamp. The girls have
been working hard and were
looking for good things this
year. They seem excited to
play.
Assisting Dorenkamp with
coaching duties will be
assistant Tayla Turner.
Dorenkamp welcomed a
surprising 24 prospects out for
this years team. The roster
includes six seniors, six
juniors, six sophomores,and
six freshmen.
With only one senior
graduating from the team last
year, the new coach inherits a
team that brings back a
number of players with varsity
experience.
The varsity roster will
feature the following players:
Carrie Morrow, 5-9 sr., MH.
Brittani Widener, 5-8 sr.,
MH.
Kyreth Tirado, 5-5 sr., DS.
Marlena Rojas, 5-8 jr., OH.
Alyssa Dulac, 5-6 jr., Setter.
Alyssa Sigala, 5-5 jr., DS.
Ariana Yanez, 5-7 jr., MH.
Tallie Harmon, 5-8 soph.,
OH.
Darcy Widner, 5-8 soph.,
OH.
Chanel Tirado, 5-5 soph.,
Setter/DS.
Kirby Vanderpool, 5-7 soph.,
OH
Brittany Gonzales, 5-6 fr.,
Setter/OH.Dorenkamp said
she hopes to instill more
discipline on the court and a
desire to play all out.
I want the girls to play as
hard as they can and have a
different attitude about the
game, she said. I want them
to learn to be a winner.
The volleyball program
hasnt had a lot of success in
the past, but Dorenkamp feels
that will come.
Granada hasnt been to a
state tournament in volleyball
since I was a sophomore in
high school in 1998, she
explained. I dont know if we
can turn it around this year,
but I really think they stand a
chance in the future. Were
starting to play the teams that
we beat in junior high so we
should be very competitive.
Once again, the lack of
height may be an issue for the
Lady Bobcats with the teams
tallest player at 5-9.
Dorenkamp hopes to
overcome the lack of size with
the basics to win matches.
Its going to be a wait and
see with how we come
together, Dorenkamp said.
We have a lot of bad habits
we need to break and change.
But the girls have had a great
attitude and were looking
forward to seeing what we can
do.
Top players returning for the Lady Bobcats volleyball team include front row, l-r, Kirby Vanderpool, Ariana Yanez, Alyssa Dulac, Kyreth
Tirado, and Alyssa Sigala. Middle row, l-r, Tallie Harmon, Carrie Marrow, Brittani Widener, and Abby Hopper. Back row, l-r, Darcy

Wildcats face a rebuilding year
Hit hard by graduation,
team looks to build up
By John Contreras
The Lamar Ledger
With some heavy losses due
to graduation, the Holly High
School Wildcats football team
will be in a rebuilding stage.
Scott Hodgson, who heads
into his third year at the helm,
graduated six starters on
offense and
five starters
on defense
from a team
that posted a
2-3 record in
the Class A
Arkansas
Valley 8-man
Conference
and posted
an overall
record of 3-6
We
definitely got
hit hard by
graduation,
said Hodgson. We graduated
nine players that contributed
big time on both sides of the
ball. This year, were going to
have a lot of kids new to the
varsity level but have been
with the program the last few
years. Were going to be a
very young team this year with
about half of our kids being
freshmen. So, everybody is
going to be able to contribute
at the varsity level because we
are low in numbers.
On offense, the Wildcats
will basically have a whole
new backfield.
Jason Barth, an athletic 5-7,
150 sophomore, will be taking
over at the quarterback
position. He
was the teams
second
leading rusher
last year.
Hell be
joined by
Robert
Darnell, a 5-7,
140 senior, or
Christian
Orozco, a 5-7,
150
sophomore, at
tailback. The
fullback will
be Jace
Nordyke, a
5-9, 170 senior.
Robert sat out last season
with an injury and were glad
to have him back, said
Hodgson. Christian is looking
good and Jace has been our
fullback for the last three
years. He has a good
understanding of his
responsibilities and what that
position entails. Up front, the
offensive line will be anchored
by Jeremy Brian, a 6-0, 205
senior, returning at center.
Dylan Hammit, a 5-9, 180
junior, and Sy Donaldson, a
5-10, 180 junior, will man the
guard positions.
Jeremy has started for us
since he was a freshman, so
hes our leader up front,
Hodgson said. Last year,
Dylan played mostly defensive
end for us. This year, hes
going to be going both ways.
Hes definitely ready to go and
the same things goes for Sy,
who will step up and go both
ways also. Now is their time.
Rotating at tight end will be
Tanner Barth, a 5-11, 180
senior; Porter Salisbury, a
5-11, 165 junior; and Colby
Salisbury, a 5-9, 145 freshman.
The defensive front line will
be anchored by Brian at
noseguard and Nordyke and
Hammit at defensive ends.
The linebackers will include
P. Salisbury, Donaldson, and
Joesph Parker, a 5-10, 160
junior. Patrolling the field in
the defensive backfield will be
Darnell and J. Barth.
The biggest thing that we
need to improve on defense is
our tackling, explained
Hodgson.
Looking at the Arkansas
Valley Conference, Hodgson
gives the nod to Springfield,
Walsh, and Granada as the
teams to beat with the players
they have returning.
Were not very big, but we
certainly have some good
athletes, Hodgson said.
Were going to try some
schemes to take advantage of
that. This is the hardest
working group of kids since
Ive been in Holly. Im hoping
what were lacking in numbers
and size, we can make up with
hard work.

Those underclassmen had to step up and take on starting roles last year.

program to the next level. They believe that they can be a lot better than
what theyve shown in the past.
Shannon Rushton
Head coach
HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL
Lady Wildcats
expectations high
By John Contreras
The Lamar Ledger
The Holly girls head into
the 2011 season with a new
coaching staff.
Shannon Rushton takes
over the program this year
with the assistance of Sarah
(Evans) Thompson.
Its a new role for me, said
Rushton. I spent the last six
years as an assistant high
school football coach. When
they had an opening for the
high school volleyball
coaching position, I was asked
if I would be interested in
doing it and I was more than
happy to do it.
However, Im going to rely
heavily on my assistant Sarah
Thompson, he said. Sarah is
a very bright young lady and a
first year teacher at Holly. She
was a successful athlete at
Wiley High School.
Thankfully, she knows the
game of volleyball and does a
lot of the teaching to not only
the girls but me.
Im jumping in head first
but its exciting and a new
challenge for me, said
Rushton, who is also the head
coach for the high school boys
basketball team. Ive known a
lot of these girls all of their
lives and theres a lot of talent
here. I think we have the
ability to surprise a lot of
people and our expectations
are very high.
Rushton has 13 players out
for this years team including
three seniors, four juniors,
four sophomores, and two
freshmen.
Leading the way for the
Lady Wildcats will be seniors
Lora Kirmer, a 6-0 middle
hitter; Kayla Gutierrez, a 5-6
setter and libero, and Liberty
Bollig, a 5-7 outside hitter.
Juniors expected to
contribute will be Kenzi
Simon, a 5-10 outside hitter;
Alex Juarez, a 5-4 setter;
Jordan Fletcher, a 5-6 outside
hitter; and Kayla Hannel, a 5-7
outside hitter.
Rushton will also count
heavily on sophomore players
Lacey Darnell, a 5-4 setter and
libero; Ashlyn Hess, a 5-6
outside hitter; Sheridan
Rushton, a 5-7 middle hitter;
and Tiana Isley, a 5-8 middle
hitter.
Rounding out the roster are
freshmen Karen Avalos, a 5-4
outside hitter and Denice
Carrillo, a 5-7 middle hitter.
We suffered a couple of
losses to graduation, but we
return some real quality
players, Rushton said. Lora
is going to be a big force as a
middle hitter for us. Weve got
a great setter in Kayla
(Gutierrez) and Liberty is a
fantastic outside hitter.
Im going to rely a lot on
some underclassmen like
Kenzi, Ashlyn, Sheridan, and
Lacey, explained Rushton.
Thats our core of seven
players that were going to
count on to give us a majority
of the minutes on the varsity.
Last year, some of the
younger players on the team
were forced to play a varsity
role right off the bat.
Those underclassmen had
to step up and take on starting
roles last year, explained
Rushton. They learned a lot
and know what is expected of
them in order to take this
program to the next level.
They believe that they can be
a lot better than what theyve
shown in the past. As a
coaching staff we believe that
as well.
Rushton said the key to the
season will be discipline on
the court.
Our girls have to learn to
understand that they need to
have composure, there has to
be discipline, and they have to
learn to close out games, he
said. There were a lot of
games last year where they
had the lead but then let an
opposing team go on a run to
win the game. There has to be
one or two girls on the floor
ready to step up and take
over.
With a lot of new coaches
taking over the volleyball
programs this year in the
region, it could be an equal
playing field as several top
players graduated .
Holly competes in District 3
which includes Wiley,
Springfield, Walsh, Kim, South
Baca, and Manzanola.
Rushton gives the nod to
Wiley as the team to beat in
the district but expects good
competition from the rest of
the teams as well. There will
be new head coaches at
Springfield and Walsh.
Rushton added, Sitting in
the stands and watching my
daughter play is a lot different
than sitting on the bench in
the role as a head coach.
Thats going to be a whole
new experience.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
Strong junior players step it up
Team ranked 3rd by Denver Posts preseason polls
By Dick Peecher
The Lamar Ledger
With five of his six starters
returning and 22 prospective
players out, coach Dustin
Uhland and the Eads Eagles
football team looks to make a
deep run in this years Class A
6-man state playoffs.
Uhland, in his fourth year as
head coach, guided the Eagles
to the state semifinals a year
ago and hopes to take his
team a step further this year.
Eads lost to Fleming 74-22 in
the semfinals. In the state
championship game, Idalia
defeated Fleming, 70-36.
Eads heads into the 2011
season ranked third in the just
released pre-season polls by
the Denver Post.
Uhland will count on a
talented junior class as well as
five players from Kit Carson
among the 22 out for the team.
Alberto Guiterez, a junior
from Kit Carson, returns as
the leading rusher from a year
ago and will fuel the Eagles on
offense.
The Eagles have good size
returning up front anchored
by Justin Lenox, a 6-3,
245-pound junior, and Cory
Miller, a 6-1, 215-pound junior.
Other returning starters
include Kit Carsons John
Mitchek, the lone senior on
the roster, and Eads junior
Logan Crawford.
Looking for playing time
this year will be juniors Taylor
Weirich, Logan Smith, and
Kyle Crow and sophomore
Blaine Winder as well as
junior Troy Miller from Kit
Carson. All saw action on one
side of the ball or the other a
year ago.
I think this team has a real
good shot at going deep into
the playoffs, said Uhland.
We need to take care of the
ball a little better than we did a
year ago. That is something
we are stressing in practice a
lot right now. We are trying to
do all of the little things a lot
better than we have in the
past.
Uhland added, We are
looking to rotate a lot of
players at this time, as we feel
we have several good young
players coming off the bench
this season. We want to be a
much more complete team
this year.
Ranked ahead of No. 3 Eads
in the preseason state poll is
No. 1 Fleming and No. 2 Otis.
Idalia is ranked fourth and
Bethune is ranked fifth.
Fleming is definitely the
number one team right now,
but we are anxious to get our
season started and see where
we stack up, said Uhland.
The Eagles kick off the
season with two home games
against Edison on Sept. 2 and
Deertrail on Sept. 9.

Team hopes to
top District 2
this season
By Dick Peecher
The Lamar Ledger
An assistant for the past
seven years and a successful
coach for most of the junior
high girls programs at Eads,
Stephanie Bohlander will take
over the Eads High School
volleyball program this fall.
Bohlander, also the girls
track coach for the past four
years, will inherit a solid core
of players plus some
outstanding freshmen.
With 15 players out,
including five from Plainview,
Eads could be one of the top
teams in District 2 this fall.
Three seniors Bekah
Hallman, Natalya Weber, and
Emily Weirich will provide
solid leadership for the Lady
Eagles.
Weirich, along with junior
Marissa Dixon, will be in the
middle, while Hallman will hit
outside. 61 freshman Tanaia
Hansen looks for time as an
outside hitter as well.
Weber will hit and help set,
while freshman Hailey Ray
could help with some of the
setting as well. Sophomore
Dorian Raye has the inside
track at the libero position at
the moment.
An excited Bohlander was
enthusiastic about her team,
This group of girls has that
competitive spirit. They have
that work ethic and drive that
coaches look for. We have a
good balance of leadership on
this team. They give every
ounce of their being in
practice; our mistakes are
never from a lack of effort.
Bohlander added, We have
had our share of ups and
downs over the last couple of
years here at Eads, so any
success we have this year will
be earned.
The new coach was also
enthused to have longtime
Plainview head coach Jay
Wilson as her assistant this

McCLAVE
HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
Cardinals look to
turn it all around
By John Contreras
The Lamar Ledger
The McClave football team
has no where to look but up.
The Cardinals are coming
off a winless season last year
and eager to turn it around.
Going into last season, we
knew it was going to be
tough, said McClave head
coach Shawn Randel. As a
head coach and as players,
you have higher expectations.
Not winning a game last year
was tough to take.
It seems like we would play
with teams for the first half
and then things would get out
of hand and we took our
lumps, explained Randel. I
played a ton of young kids and
they got a lot of experience.
Hopefully, it motivated our
kids. I feel good about this
season and where we are at
right now compared to last
year.
Randel has 20 players out
for this years team with a
number of returning starters.
Randel, who heads into his
fourth-year at the helm, will
turn to Ashur Wiedrich, a 6-1,
130 junior, to direct the
offense at quarterback.
Also returning in the
backfield for the Cardinals will
be Dillan Kelley, a 5-11, 140
junior, at tailback. Two new
faces playing fullback will be
T.J. Trijullo, a 5-1, 150
freshman, and Gabe
Longworth, a 5-9, 130
freshman.
The offensive line will be
anchored by big Tate Mauser,
a 6-4, 280 senior. Mauser will
move from center to a guard
this season.
Randel is counting on
Mauser to provide the
leadership for the Cardinals.
Tate is a four-year starter
now and was a part of that
good football team we had
when he was a freshman, said
Randel. I think he
understands what it takes to
get there. Were going to lean
on him to lead this team and
go with it.
Taking over the snapping
duties at center will be Kolby
Brubacher, a 6-1, 260
sophomore. Playing the other
guard position will be first-
year player Zach Zamora, a
5-10, 160 junior, or Sterling
Noecker, a 5-10, 200
sophomore.
At the end positions will be
Cody Canfield, a 6-5, 180
junior, and Keaton Sloan, a
5-10, 150 senior.
On the defensive side of the
pigskin, Mauser will lead the
way at noseguard. Playing at
defensive end will be Noecker,
Zamora, and Sloan. At
linebacker will be Trujillo,
Kelley,and Canfield.
The defensive backfield will
include Wiedrich, Longworth,
and Dallas Newman, a 5-10,
160 sophomore.
In our scrimmage at
Hoehne, we looked pretty
decent, said Randel. Some of
our kids have gotten older and
matured. Its tough to play
football with freshmen and
sophomores. Weve got a
good, big class of juniors with
some seniors mixed in. Youve
got to feel good about the
maturity level of those kids.
After two losing seasons,
youre fighting that a little bit
trying to figure out how to win
again. Hopefully, our
athleticism will help us win
some games and hopefully we
will be more physical than we
were last year. I always have
been a coach who likes to run
the football.
Looking at the Arkansas
Valley Conference, Randel
feels that Springfield,
Granada, and Walsh are the
top three teams head of the
Cardinals, Wiley, and Holly.

Returning to anchor the McClave Cardinals football team will be senior Tate Mauser, a four-year
starter.

HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL
Lady Cards
hope to keep
going strong
New coach led
team to state
tournament
last year
By John Contreras
The Lamar Ledger
The McClave High School
volleyball program has had
their taste of success over the
past decade.
The team was under the
guidance of new head coach
Rachel Dunning last year as
the Lady Cardinals earned
their 10th straight trip to the
state volleyball tournament.
The Lady Cardinals didnt
fare well in the state
tournament as they went 0-3 in
pool play to finish the season
with a 23-8 record.
Dunning lost some key
seniors from that team
including two of their big
hitters.
The McClave coach said
that this year is sort of
rebuilding year for the
program.
Were going to be very
young because we lost six
seniors from last years team,
she said. Were a little bit
inexperienced but in a good
way. We have some juniors
who have really stepped up
their game and I expect a lot
out of them. I also have two
freshmen that are going see
some varsity playing time. So,
its going to be a learning
curve for the first half of the
season but then Im expecting
a big turn for this team.
The Lady Cardinals will be
led by 5-3 senior setter
Melissa Navarrette.
Melissa is probably one of
best small school setters in
the state, praised Dunning.
Also returning from last
year will be Sara Turner, a
5-10 junior middle hitter, and
Tausha Sniff, a 5-11 junior
middle hitter. Cami Idler, a 5-8
junior, will make the transition
from a back row player to an
outside hitter.
Tyler Ann Clodfelter, a
senior, returns in the back row
as a libero for the Lady
Cardinals. The two freshmen
players looking to contribute
will be Peighton Martin and
Jordan Isom, both hitters.
Over the course of summer
volleyball, you get to see
where you stand and where
you need to have players in
positions, explained Dunning.
We made a lot of different
changes and our girls are
going to have to be ready to
step up and play some new
positions this year.
McClave had only 12
players out for the team last
year and has 18 out this year.
Dunning said the
improvement in numbers is
good because it allows the
younger players an
opportunity to improve their
skills at the junior varsity level
which is important.
Looking at some of the
competition the Lady
Cardinals will face in the
region, Dunning said the
names are the same.
Wiley is going to be pretty
much of a powerhouse and Kit
Carson is always a good
team, she said. But its going
to be anybodys game and I
think its wide open. Of
course, I think we always have
the edge but well have to wait
and see. I hope we can sneak
at the end of the season and
do some damage.

Longhorns loaded in
hunt for league title
By John Contreras
The Lamar Ledger
Buoyed by an exceptional
senior class, the Springfield
Longhorns football team
appears to be loaded in their
hunt for the Class A 8-man
Arkansas Valley
championship.
Veteran coach Doug
Hutches returns nine seniors,
along with four starters on
each side of the ball, in their
quest for the top rung this
coming season.
Springfield advanced to the
state playoffs a year ago but
were knocked off at home in
the first round in a back-and-
forth battle with Elbert, 32-27.
The Longhorns ended the
season with an 8-2 overall
record.
On the offensive side of the
ball, Hutches returns starting
quarterback Michael Crane, a
6-1, 195-pound senior; Michael
Sanchez, a 6-2 senior guard;
J.J. Loflin, a 5-11, 205
sophomore, and Bric Koehn, a
senior at end.
Koehn started both ways for
the Longhorns. He will be
joined on the defensive side of
the ball by senior defensive
backs Saul Baker and Todd
Hutches. Linebacker Brady
Humphrey, a 5-11, 190-pound
senior, started a year ago as
well.
Other bright spots in early
practice sessions have been
240-pound Sean Caricato, a
transfer from Texas, and
guard Ryan Travor.
Coach Hutches will move
the athletic Loflin, a state
runner-up in wrestling as a
freshman last year, to fullback
and his son Todd to tailback.
The Longhorns will run out
of both an I and split back
formation this season.
We lost several good
seniors last year, but this
senior class has been an
exceptional class since they
hit high school, stated
Hutches. They are laid back
but very coachable, and they
work very hard. They have
been by far the most
consistent class at hitting the
weights since I have been
coaching here.
Hutches expects both
Granada and Walsh to be in
the thick of the fight this year
for top honors in the Arkansas
Valley Conference.
In our two losses last year,
to Walsh and Elbert, we just
didnt play consistently
throughout, said Hutches.
That is our goal this year
we must play consistently
against the better teams in
order to improve.

New coach
to direct
Longhorns
By Dick Peecher
The Lamar Ledger
One of the new head
coaches dotting the high
school volleyball landscape
this season will be Chantel
Hall at Springfield.
An assistant at Springfield in
both basketball and volleyball
over the past five years, Hall
will welcome an entire starting
unit back for the Lady
Longhorns. Springfield
graduated only two seniors
and they played in supporting
roles.
Hall will look at a rotation of
eight players with her starting
unit.
Seniors Aubrey Konkel and
Alyssa Dunlap will lead the
way as Hall will count on a
strong junior class to provide
much needed depth.
Junior hitters Kaylean
Orlowski and Kiri Wicker will
provide a lot of the offense at
the net, while Adrienne
Mondragon will set the ball
and Bre Stafford will likely be
the libero. Taylor Konkel, a
5-11 sophomore, will provide
considerable size in the
middle for hitting and
blocking, while fellow
sophomore Maddie West will
also set in Halls 6-2 offense.
This is a very well rounded
team, I think, said Hall. As
an assistant the last several
years, I have to take on a new
role now. It will take some
time for them to see me
differently, but so far
everything has been just great.
There has been no
complaining, and I am really
happy about that.
The Lady Longhorns have
15 players out, including a
good group of freshmen from
a very strong junior high team
We have some very
talented girls this year, as we
have had in years past, Hall
said. If they will work
together as a team and know
our strengths in the key
matches this team is capable
of doing whatever they want to
do. I am really looking forward
to our season.

Eagles looks for repeat success
2010-11 boys sports excelled I think that we will be stronger up front, much stronger across the board, really. We have some good
young kids coming up too.
Ronny Tate
Head coach
By Dick Peecher
The Lamar Ledger
Walsh High School boys
teams had a remarkable year
in sports in 2010-2011.
Walsh made it to the Class
1A state quarterfinals in
football in the fall.
The Eagles then placed
third in the Class 1A state
basketball tournament in the
winter.
In the spring, Walsh
advanced to the state
semifinals in Class 1A baseball
and then capped the year off
with a state championship in
the newly established Class
1A track classification.
The good news is that
Walsh graduated only three
seniors from those teams.
Those were three pretty
incredible seniors. Speed like
you have never seen, said
Walsh head football coach
Ronny Tate in talking about
Laken Alley, Landry Cogburn,
and Chris Cook. But we have
a pretty good group coming
back. And we still have some
pretty good speed; not like
before, but good!
In the Class A 8-man state
quarterfinals, Walsh fell to
Norwood, 42-28, to finish the
season with a 9-2 record. The
other loss for the Eagles came
in the season opener to
Hoehne, 62-24. Hoehne went
on to win the 8-man state title.
With 20 players out and five
starters returning on each side
of the football, the Eagles will
have a solid core to build on
this season.
Only one starter returns in
the backfield, but he is a good
one in junior running back
Terrell Stafford. An elusive
slashing runner, Stafford will
be among the top backs in this
years Arkansas Valley
Conference. He will be out for
a couple of weeks with a
concussion.
Coach Tate will move junior
Jonathan England to
quarterback and Tyler Sharp
to fullback. Both played a lot
last year and possess good
speed.
The real strength of the
team will be the line where
four of the five starters return.
Jordan Jones and Chase
Mundell will anchor the end
spots where they possess
good speed.
Frank Fehr, 210-pounds,
will anchor the middle of the
line at center, while Cullen
Sires will play one of the guard
positions. Sophomore Chaz
Hebberd will be the lone
newcomer, but at 6-2,
190-pounds he will bring
plenty of size and strength.
Most of the same names
will dot the defensive roster as
well.
This is the most kids we
have had out in a while, so we
are very, very happy about
that, said Tate. I think that
we will be stronger up front,
much stronger across the
board, really. We have some
good young kids coming up
too. Jonathan (England) did a
good job of filling in for Laken
last year when he was hurt at
the beginning of the season,
so I am excited to watch him
play. We should be pretty
balanced offensively.
In the Arkansas Valley
Conference, the front runners
will be Springfield, Walsh, and
Granada. Holly suffered major
losses due to graduation while
Wiley is still in a rebuilding
process, and McClave looks to
recover from a winless season
last year.
Walsh will face a stiff test
right off the bat in the 2011
season opener when they host
the defending state champion
Hoehne Farmers on Saturday,
Sept. 3.

Lady Eagles stand strong despite small numbers
By Dick Peecher
The Lamar Ledger
No stranger to Walsh athlet-
ics, Alissa Renquist has as-
sumed the reins for the Walsh
High School volleyball pro-
gram.
Formerly Alissa Bryant, she
was a standout for Walsh dur-
ing the 1990s in both volley-
ball and basketball. Renquist
is the wife of current Walsh
boys basketball coach Ryan
Renquist.
With a shortage of girls the
last couple of years, Walsh will
again have one of the smaller
teams in the area number-
wise, with just nine girls out.
With only one senior, the
Lady Eagles will be young and
led by a strong sophomore
class.
The ringleader will be soph-
omore standout Heidi Cog-
burn, one of their leading hit-
ters from a year ago. Desiree
Dubois, 5-9, will be a middle
hitter, along with senior Jenna
Bishop. Junior Alyssa Loflin
will do most of the setting. Eva
Fehr will be a defensive spe-
cialist for the Lady Eagles.
Despite the small numbers,
Renquist was upbeat in assess-
ing her players, We dont
have much height, but this
team communicates very
well, she said. We have great
leadership, even though the
leaders on our team are all
young. We need to get strong-
er hitting-wise and we need to
play smart to have some suc-
cess this season. This is a
great bunch of girls that Im
working with.
