ence, here they come! With
the return of senior co-cap-
tain Andrew Potter at
quarterback, the
Charlevoix Rayders have a
leader that will keep the
team focused and ready to
move the ball up and down
the field.
Making Potters job eas-
ier will be the returning
senior backfield of running
back Jake McLean and full-
back co-captain John Boss.
While both players have
similar qualities, Boss pos-
sesses the power to run
over opposing defenders
and McLean will use his
speed and quickness to
leave those same defenders
in the dust, chasing the
numbers on the back of his
jersey. Seniors River Gau-
thier and Marc Durkee will
also see ample action at the
backfield positions.
Senior Coby Herriman
gets the call as the center
and along with an offensive
line combination that will
feature fellow seniors
Travis Rainey and Clay
Heise and juniors Andrew
Robarge, Sawyer Russell,
Jared Reibel, Greyson
Spegel, Drew Seymour and
Corbin Turkelson they will
form a wall that will pro-
vide the protection needed
for Potter to find the open
man downfield, including
his favorite target from last
season 66 senior tight
end Josh Hogan.
Also spreading out the
Charlevoix offense will be
wide receivers: senior -
Myles Kurr; senior Mor-
gan Stewart; and 62 jun-
ior - Tom Zipp, along with
senior tight end Austin
DeVries.
Add to the mix juniors
Tanner Catt, Charlie
Hamilton and sophomore
Shane Sutherland, the
Rayders will have more
than adequate backup at
the quarterback and run-
ning back positions, as the
trio were key leaders on
last seasons successful
junior varsity squad and
will help contribute to the
success of the Rayder pro-
gram this season.

lines for his ninth season,
head coach Don Jess has
been impressed with how
hard the team has worked
this summer and so far
this preseason.
Coming off their annual
3-day minicamp on
Beaver Island, Jess noted
that the team has had one
of the best first weeks of
practice in recent memory.
We have practiced re-
ally well, Jess said, The
kids have had a great sum-
mer, they worked hard
and we have a good com-
bination of experience and
youth.
Jess also praises how
well the entire team com-
municates with one an-
other and how well they
get along and have created
a family like atmosphere.
The team has their
sights set on achieving
some preseason goals and
they have high expecta-
tions of themselves includ-
ing winning a playoff
game.
It is nice to finally have
this entire group together
again, Jess noted. They
experienced a lot of suc-
cess as a unit at the junior
varsity level, and we hope
to build on that.
We have some high ex-
pectation of ourselves,
said Jess, As long as we
stay united, disciplined
and focused, the results we
are looking for will hap-
pen.
If the offseason and pre-
season are any indication,
the Charlevoix Rayder
football team will work
hard and give the coach-
ing staff the effort and de-
sire needed to play
competitive and winning
football this season and
beyond.

CHARLEVOIX -- A strong
finish fueled the Charlevoix
Rayders to a 21-13 victory in
their season finale against
Lake Michigan Conference
opponent Kalkaska on Octo-
ber 25.
The Rayder faithful wit-
nessed a 15 point scoring
spree by the home team with
about four minutes to go in
the contest, coming back
from a 13-6 deficit.
The final 15 points came
on an 8-yard touchdown pass
from Andrew Potter to Gun-
nar Zipp and a 20-yard scam-
per by John Boss. Boss also
tacked on a two-point con-
version, while Zipp kicked an
extra point.
"It was a nice way to end
the season," said Charlevoix
coach Don Jess, whose team
finished 3-6 overall, 2-5 con-
ference.
After the Potter to Zipp
score and two-point conver-
sion, the Rayders recovered
the ball on the ensuing kick-
off and two plays later, Boss
found pay dirt, as he raced
20-yards for the score.
Leading the offense for the
team in the contest was Boss
with 110 yards on 14 carries,
while the speedy Jake
McLean rushed 20 times for
70 yards.
McLean also paced the
Rayder defense with 10 tack-
les, Chris Keie finished with
seven, while Josh Hogan,
River Gauthier and Coby
Herriman each found the
quarterback for a sack.
Prior to that contest, the
Rayders found themselves in
the midst of an up and down
season, giving everything
they had, the team battled
hard each game and earned
hard fought victories over
Maple City Glen Lake 19-10,
and East Jordan 13-7.
The Rayders found them-
selves on the short end in
close contests against St.
Ignace 6-13 and Harbor
Springs 14-19, and ultimately
fell to playoff contenders
Grayling 0-33, Traverse City
St. Francis 8-42, Boyne City
13-47 and Elk Rapids 6-41.
While the 2010 Rayders
said goodbye to many gradu-
ating key players, look for the
2011 Charlevoix team to
bounce back, and be stronger
than ever.
