The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet – 10/10/2008

“Drew Peterson Versus the Lie Detector”

JULIET: Welcome back to a continuation of The Verdict. Hard to believe but almost
a year has passed, Gosh, since Drew Peterson first reported his fourth wife, Stacy,
missing.

MIKE: Since then, we have seen Peterson make a slew of strange moves and media
gaffs, and – surprise, surprise – another gaff has happened!

(START VIDEO CLIP)

VOICEOVER: He is the lead suspect in his fourth wife’s disappearance and Drew
Peterson just got a little more suspicious. According to the author of a new book the
former detective failed a polygraph test about his missing wife.

Peterson agreed to be interviewed by Derek Armstrong for Armstrong’s book

entitled “Drew Peterson Exposed.”

After being hooked up to a lie detector Peterson reportedly failed on these three
questions:

When asked whether his wife called to say she was leaving him he answered, “Yes”,
which the polygraph rated as deceptive.

Asked whether he had seen Stacy the night before she vanished he said, “Yes”,
which was again deceptive.

And finally, when asked whether he knew where Stacy was now he said, “No”, which
the polygraph indicated was, you guessed it, deceptive.

But, it wasn’t all bad news for Peterson. When asked if he had physically harmed or
removed his wife the day she disappeared, he said, “No”, which the polygraph rated
as not deceptive.

MIKE: Joining us from Toronto, the author of “Drew Peterson Exposed”, Derek
Armstrong. Derek, why would Drew Peterson sit down with you for this lengthy
interview?

DEREK ARMSTRONG: Well, his answer is…he would tell you that he wanted his full
story told, that he wasn’t getting covered in the media the way he should be…

MIKE: Well, Geraldo went to his house. He’s a member of the media.

DEREK: Yes, and he talked a lot about Geraldo.

JULIET: What did he say?

DEREK: He basically said that nothing that Geraldo said when he came out of the
house was true and it was very misleading and all of these things. He’s very,
(laughter as video clip of Geraldo exiting Peterson’s house is shown) he’s very
against the media but he wants to be covered by the media.

MIKE: So he thinks Geraldo lied when he came out of the house?

DEREK: That’s right.

JULIET: Geraldo, we see you there in the red glasses and we see you…

GERALDO RIVERA: Liar.

JULIET: here on our set. What happened there?

GERALDO: Well, let me just say about Drew Peterson. Drew Peterson is the scum of
the earth. He murdered at least one, probably both of his wives and I fully expect
that Drew Peterson ultimately will pay the ultimate price. Why he’s got this
fascination with me is…I don’t know. Maybe he’s a pervert as well as a murderer. I
don’t know.

MIKE: You are attractive.

GERALDO: But the polygraph, I thought – and Derek should be commended for
staging it under neutral circumstances. It was a fair test. Whether or not you
believe in polygraphs is another issue – but here you had three clearly deceptive
answers that tend to heap even more scorn and suspicion on the Beast of
Bolingbrook, who I totally believe, as I said, is responsible for the death of two
women.

JULIET: Derek, so Peterson says the media, Geraldo and now the media isn’t giving
him a fair shake. What is he concerned about? What does he think is happening?

DEREK: Well, he thinks he’s being painted unfairly – when he says something it’s
not being reported. I promised him in the book I would report everything, the good
and the bad.

MIKE: Did you…

JULIET: and the ugly.

DEREK: and the ugly, yeah.

MIKE: Hey Derek, did you ask him flat out, while he had the lie detector strapped to
him, “Did you kill any of your wives?”

DEREK: Not that particular question. We talked only about Kathleen…

MIKE: That would be the number one one question for me Derek! Why didn’t you
ask that?
DEREK: (laughs) Yes. Well, there was some interference with the lawyers. I was
being supervised to some extent.

GERALDO: Even the way the question that he passed was staged: “Did you have
anything to do with the physical removal of your wife on the day she disappeared?”
What if it was the day before or after or he had some kind of help in disposing of her
body? There’s a lot of wiggle room where you could technically be not deceptive.
The ones that were deceptive were questions he couldn’t wiggle out of.

JULIET: You know his lawyers, just like Derek said, are jumping in there telling him
not to answer these questions, so do you Derek believe that he is guilty of
murdering one or…both of his wives?

DEREK: It’s a difficult question. I have a personal opinion on that. I wrote the book
so that other people could make their own call.

JULIET: What’s your opinion? ‘Cause you spent some time with him. A lot of people
haven’t been able to sit down there.

DEREK: Yeah. He, when he talks about his wives he’s very cold. He’s very
unemotional. There’s a lot to worry me there as an investigator. If I was
investigating this as an officer of the law, I would be really concerned. I would make
him definitely a major suspect. I don’t think there’s enough yet to charge him,
unfortunately.

MIKE: Yeah.

GERALDO: I agree with everything.

MIKE: Hey Derek, thank you for your…

GERALDO: I would characterize him as a murdering skunk.

MIKE: There you are. Derek, thanks a lot!

JULIET: This is what Glenn Selig, Drew’s PR person had to say:

“Drew passed the most important questions relating to the disappearance of his
wife… Yet the focus seems to be only on the questions the polygraph showed him to
be deceptive…(GERALDO: Three of six.) It once again proves that people want to
believe Drew’s guilty despite whatever evidence there is to the contrary.”

That from Drew’s PR people.

GERALDO: Amazing how they get PR people and lawyers that aren’t paid. Like O.J.
Simpson. They go to Vegas and people comp them drinks. They hang out… they
want to pal around with suspects.

JULIET: Not for long!

GERALDO: Anybody can be a star.

JULIET: Derek, thanks for joining us. We appreciate it and you can catch Geraldo at
Large this Saturday night at ten pm Easter on the Fox news channel.
