Players to Watch How They Match Up
he Houston Texans have never made the playoffs since entering the NFL in 2002, but there are several reasons to believe this might be the year. Houston has started its 2011 season on a high note, with a 34-7 blowout of Indianapolis in a battle of AFC South teams. Of course, the Texans also opened their 2010 season with a home victory over the Colts and moved to 4-2 after six games before things fell apart and they ended up with a disappointing 610 record. But things could be different in 2011, even though this years season-opening victory wasnt as significant as last years because Peyton Manning was at quarterback in 2010 and not last weekend. Manning is out for at least the first half of this season after undergoing neck surgery and his absence will turn Indy from a powerhouse into just another team. That should give everybody else in the AFC South a greater opportunity to unseat the Colts as division champs, and Houston appears to be the one team most able to take advantage. Another big reason for optimism is the arrival of Wade Phillips to oversee a defense that was among the worst in the league in 2010. The former Cowboys head coach has a great reputation as a defensive coordinator and he inherits a group with some top-end talent, such as Mario Williams, DeMeco Ryans, Brian Cushing and Johnathan Joseph. Also on defense are Houstons last two firstround picks, cornerback Kareem Jackson and defensive end J.J. Watt. Phillips has installed his 3-4 system in Houston and his troops aced their first test by shutting down the Colts even if it was without Manning.
Quarterback Matt Schaub (8) spearheads a balanced Houston offense, while linebacker Brian Cushing (56) is one of the marquee players on a revamped defense.
The Texans held Indianapolis to only 236 total yards and forced two turnovers. Only a fourthquarter touchdown kept Houston from recording a shutout.
For comparison purposes, the Texans allowed less than 24 points only twice in 2010 in a 200 victory over Tennessee and in a 34-17 seasonending victory over Jacksonville. Houston has had a potent offense for a few years now, and they had great success running the ball in Week 1 and that was with Arian Foster, the NFLs leading rusher in 2010, missing the game because of a hamstring injury. The passing game is among the best in the league, thanks largely to the combination of quarterback Matt Schaub and wide receiver Andre Johnson. The Texans showed off their offensive balance in the season-opening victory over Indy, with 167 yards on the ground and 220 yards in the air. For good measure, Houston added a touchdown on special teams when Jacoby Jones returned a punt 79 yards right before halftime. At least five new teams have made the playoffs each of the last 15 years. With the kind of balance they showed in their opener and with a suddenly weaker division, the Texans finally might be ready to join the postseason fun.

The last time the Dolphins saw the Houston defense was late in the 2009 season, but the Texans were playing a 4-3 system at that time. Houston has new personnel up front now that its playing a 3-4, and the most prominent is first-round pick J.J. Watt, a defensive end from Wisconsin. Shaun Cody is the starter at nose tackle, and hes the guy center Mike Pouncey and the middle of the Dolphins offensive line will focus on moving off the line. Houston has two good run defenders in the middle of their linebacking corps in former NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year winners DeMeco Ryans and Brian Cushing.

Houston had to play its season opener without the top rusher in the NFL from 2010, but that didnt stop the Texans from gaining 167 yards on the ground against Indianapolis. The truth is that there probably isnt a team in the league with the running back depth that Houston possesses. It starts with Arian Foster, who missed the opener with a hamstring injury, and continues with Ben Tate, Derrick Ward and Steve Slaton. Tate, a 2010 second-round pick from Auburn, rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown in last Sundays opener. As always, stopping the run for the Dolphins will start with the defensive line and guys like Paul Soliai, Kendall Langford and Randy Starks.

This is where the Houston defense is hoping to make the most improvement after finishing last season dead last in the league in pass defense. The addition of free agent cornerback Johnathan Joseph has solidified the secondary, which also features former Dolphins first-round pick Jason Allen. With the move to a 3-4 defense, former first overall pick Mario Williams has switched from defensive end to outside linebacker and he came up with two sacks in the season opener. Williams no doubt will present a big challenge for offensive tackles Jake Long and Marc Colombo. The other pass rushers to watch on the Texans are Antonio Smith and Connor Barwin.

Former University of Miami standout Andre Johnson clearly is the star of the Houston passing game and the one guy that cornerbacks Vontae Davis and Sean Smith have to control. But quarterback Matt Schaub is an accurate passer and he has other inviting targets, namely Jacoby Jones and tight end Owen Daniels. In particular, Daniels will present a tough assignment for the Dolphins safeties or linebackers Kevin Burnett and Karlos Dansby. Up front, the Texans best pass protector probably is right tackle Eric Winston, another former University of Miami standout.

The Texans have a dangerous punt returner in Jacoby Jones, who scored on a 79-yard return against Indy in Week 1. The Dolphins remember him all too well because he also scored against them in Houston a few years back. Former Bears safety Danieal Manning is the kickoff returner, and his only return in this years opener was good for 46 yards. Veteran Neil Rackers is among the most solid placekickers in the game and six of his seven kickoffs in the opener went for touchbacks. This will be another good test for the Dolphins special teams, who have some quality performers of their own with the likes of punter Brandon Fields and kicker Dan Carpenter.

This is the second time in six meetings the Dolphins and Texans are playing a September game in Miami. The first was the 2003 season opener, which Houston won 21-20 on a last-minute field goal.
The loss to Houston in 2003 snapped the Dolphins 11-game opening-day winning streak, which was the second-longest in NFL history behind Dallas 17-game streak (1965-81).
In four career games against the Dolphins, former University of Miami star wide receiver Andre Johnson has 30 catches for 426 yards and three touchdowns. He missed the 2007 game because of an injury.
The Dolphins had five different starting quarterbacks in the first five meetings against Houston Jay Fiedler in 2003, Daunte Culpepper in 2006, Trent Green in 2007, Chad Pennington in 2008 and Chad Henne in 2009.
Houston is the only NFL team the Dolphins have never beaten and one of only five against which they entered the 2011 season with a losing regular season record the N.Y. Giants, N.Y. Jets, Oakland and Pittsburgh are the others.
Houstons 27-20 victory in Miami in 2009 matched the combined margin of the four previous meetings, which ended in scores of 21-20, 17-15, 22-19 and 29-28.

This was the first time in five meetings between the team the game was decided by more than three points. Chad Henne set career highs with his 33 completions and 55 attempts. The Dolphins scored the last 20 points of the game after falling behind 27-0 in the second quarter. The Dolphins outgained Houston 256-100 in the second half. The Dolphins had a 62-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter from Henne to Ted Ginn Jr. nullified by a tripping penalty. Linebacker Quentin Moses sack was his first since the 2007 season. The Dolphins first touchdown, on a 2-yard run by Lex Hilliard in the third quarter, came when Pat White entered the game at quarterback for one play.

The game set a Dolphins record for most combined yards between the teams (1,110). The Dolphins scored a touchdown on their opening drive of the season for the first time since 2000. Chad Hennes 416 yards passing set a career high and marked the first 400-yard performance by a Dolphins quarterback since 2006 when Joey Harrington accomplished the feat against Green Bay. The 99-yard touchdown pass from Tom Brady to Wes Welker was the longest play ever given up by the Dolphins defense, topping a 93-yard pass and lateral against Kansas City in 1969. The Dolphins 488 total yards represented their highest output since they gained 525 yards in the 39-35 victory over New England in the 1994 season opener.

In this exclusive column for Playbook, Head Coach Tony Sparano talks about todays challenge of facing a receiver like Houstons Andre Johnson and also touches on a variety of other topics, including his expectations for inside linebackers Karlos Dansby and Kevin Burnett.
Q. You play some great receivers this season. Houstons Andre Johnson is about as good as they come. What is your philosophy on matching up a specific cornerback against the other teams top receiver?
TS: Johnson is a huge challenge for any defense. If you have a guy that you feel like is a good matchup you should do it. We have done it on occasion. Usually what is happening more and more is that teams try to get other people to help. Well double receivers. We get doubled all the time here. Its hard to stick a corner out there and just say, take this guy away. There are a few in this league who can do it.
Q. What characteristics do great defenses share, and do you see the makings of those characteristics in your defense?
TS: The great defenses make the big plays when the big plays present themselves. They can carry a game. They can turn it around. Yes, I see those characteristics in our defense. Our defense has had its hands on its share of more than a few footballs and has, at times, dictated the tempo of the game. That happening on a consistent basis is what makes you great as opposed to good. Right now, were striving to be great.
Q. Cutting down from 90 to 53 players must have been difficult for someone who cares as much as you do. Tell the fans what its like, especially having to cut players you respect and who did everything they could to help this team?
TS: Its really hard. Nobody out there is
Q. How do you see the role of rookie receiver Clyde Gates evolving as the season progresses?
TS: Well see. Early on we want to use his speed. Were not asking him to do a lot of things. What were asking him to do are the things we believe he can do well. To Clydes credit, he has done a good job mentally of understanding what were doing. Right now he is a rotational player and we have some specific things earmarked for him.
The Dolphins are hoping that linebacker Karlos Dansby can help the defense force more turnovers this season.
going to understand that. You grow attached to these guys. They become part of your family in a lot of ways. But at the end of the day you have to do whats in the best interest of the Dolphins. Its not personal. If it were personal, youd try to keep them all.

Q. The tandem of Karlos Dansby and Kevin Burnett in the middle; what are your expectations?
TS: I have high expectations. The two of them complement each other really well. They give us a lot of flexibility. Im hoping we can create more turnovers with those two players.
Q. Do players ever try to talk you out of it?

TS: No, not really. When they hear the news, its not something they want to hear, so its usually a short conversation. Some of them handle it better than others and thats understandable because it is so important to them.

TS: We have the right veteran players on the team. Some of my first-year players are now fourth-year players, which makes them veterans. The understanding and the expectations and commitment with these players is a little more heightened with this team.
Q. What are the things that rookie Daniel Thomas needs to do to become a first-rate NFL running back?
TS: What Ive seen him do in practice he needs to bring to the games. Ive seen him run hard in practice with an excellent burst. Hes becoming a better protector. Hes got to go into the game under the big lights and do those things consistently like the good backs in our league do. I think this kid is a pretty driven kid. Time will tell with him. Hell get plenty of opportunities.

In 2009, Sparano accomplished the difficult task of balancing the need to add youth to his squad while keeping the Dolphins in the thick of the playoff hunt. Like he did with quarterback Chad Henne, who won seven of his 13 overall starts in his first season seeing regular action under center, Sparano furthered the growth of fellow second-year players Davone Bess, who led the team in receptions, Jake Long, who was named to his second consecutive Pro Bowl squad, defensive ends Kendall Langford and Phillip Merling, as well as Pro Bowl kicker Dan Carpenter. In 2008, Sparanos first year as the Dolphins head coach, he guided the team to a single-season turnaround matched just once in NFL history. Taking over a 1-15 squad from a year earlier, he led the Dolphins to an 11-5 record and the AFC East title. His 10-game improvement has been achieved only one other time in league annals, in 1999 when the Indianapolis Colts went from 3-13 to 13-3.

eff Ireland was named the Dolphins general manager on Jan. 2, 2008. He joined the club after a seven-year stint (2001-07) with the Dallas Cowboys, including his last three seasons there as the teams vice president of college and pro scouting. In his role with the Dolphins, Ireland not only is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the college and pro personnel departments, but also helps manage the teams salary cap and player contracts. He supervises all scouting efforts that relate to the college draft, free agency, the Canadian Football League, and personnel of the other 31 NFL teams. Ireland works hand in hand with Head Coach Tony Sparano in implementing a personnel plan to build the Dolphins into a championship-caliber team. In Irelands three seasons in Miami, he already has seen some of his acquisitions play a key role in the development of the team. Last season, Jake Long made the Pro Bowl for the third consecutive year, while Cameron Wake and Randy Starks blossomed into Pro Bowl performers for the first time. Veteran acquisitions such as Brandon Marshall, Karlos Dansby and Richie Incognito were major contributors to the Dolphins, while rookie draft choice Koa Misi was a starter for the team all season. Following the 2010 season, Ireland significantly upgraded the teams offense through the college draft.

awn Aponte, entering her second season with the Miami Dolphins, joined the team on Feb. 1, 2010, bringing with her a wealth of football experience at the team and league level. Aponte works closely with General Manager Jeff Ireland on football administrative matters and serves as the teams chief contract negotiator. She is responsible for the management and strategic planning of the Dolphins salary cap, negotiating and drafting player contracts and overseeing the football operations budgets. Aponte also serves as the teams liaison on league affairs. A veteran football executive, Aponte joined the Dolphins after spending the 2009 season as vice president of football administration for the Cleveland Browns. In her role with the Browns, Apontes primary responsibilities included player contract negotiations, salary cap management, player cost budgeting, league compliance and assisting in other legal matters. Aponte joined the Browns organization in 2009 after spending the previous three years at the NFL office, where she served on the Leagues Management Council as the vice president of labor finance. In her position at the NFL Management Council, Aponte represented the 32 clubs in dealings with the NFL Players Association and Class Counsel on salary cap and other labor-related matters. Among other things, she also dealt with the clubs on CBA, salary cap and player contract matters.

Cameron Wakes emergence as a big-time pass rusher no surprise to Dolphins

ameron Wakes coming-out party in 2010 might have caught the rest of the league by surprise, but he knows better and so do the Miami Dolphins. The former Canadian Football League star and two-time Defensive MVP led the National Football League in sacks with 14 late in the season before getting passed in the final weeks and caused nightmares for opposing offensive coordinators week in and week out. As a result, he was voted into the Pro Bowl as a starter for the AFC, joining left tackle Jake Long. Based on how high he was ranked by his peers on the NFL Networks Top 100 Players of 2011 list (number 63), there should be more Pro Bowl trips in his future. The selection of Long and Wake as starters marked the first time since the 2006 season when Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas were named starters that the Dolphins have had two players named starters to the AFC Pro Bowl squad. It definitely feels good and its been a crazy journey and its been a long road, said Wake, who was the eighth linebacker in club history to be chosen to the Pro Bowl, joining Nick Buoniconti (197273), Kim Bokamper (1979), A.J. Duhe (1984), John Offerdahl (198690), Bryan Cox (1992, 1994-95), Thomas (1999-2003, 2005-06) and Joey Porter (2008). It was a lot of hard work and there were a lot of obstacles in the way and perseverance, but to be considered one of the best of the best is definitely an incredible honor. After four solid years at Penn State as both a linebacker and defensive end, Wakes path to the NFL took a trying and unexpected turn. The 6-foot-3, 260-pound Maryland native was signed as an undrafted free agent by the New York Giants in 2005, showed some promise in rookie minicamp and OTAs and then was surprisingly waived in June one month before the start of training camp. Wake spent all of 2006 out of football as a mortgage broker living the corporate life under his birth name Derek Wake, but he never lost the itch or the desire to get back on the gridiron. So in May of 2007 he went north of the border into Canada and signed with the B.C. Lions, where he took the CFL by storm. We decided to take a chance on him just on the premise of he was a Penn State athlete who had tremendous athleticism, Lions head coach and general manager Wally Buono said during an exclusive interview with The Finsiders. He came to training camp and from the first time we saw him we knew he was something special.

In two seasons with the Lions as a passrushing defensive end, Wake recorded 39 sacks (16 in 2007 and 23 in 2008) to earn back-toback CFL Defensive Player of the Year honors. He also was voted Rookie of the Year in 2007 and suddenly his agents phone began ringing nonstop as NFL teams wanted to know more about this quarterback-wrecking machine. Buono is not surprised at Wakes rapid success as he saw the potential right away. Wakes explosive first step off the line of scrimmage, which is something Buono knew would benefit him in the CFL with the longer and wider field, has translated well to the NFL. And Wake believes his patience and hard work finally paid off. The Dolphins didnt waste any time and snatched up Wake in January of 2009. He had the luxury of working behind veterans Jason Taylor and Porter that season and still dialed up 5.5 sacks in limited action. Wakes rapid progress made it easier for Dolphins Head Coach Tony Sparano to part ways with Porter and Taylor in the offseason and pencil in Wake as his starting weakside linebacker. A sack and strip of future Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre in Minnesota that led to a fumble recovery for a touchdown by Koa Misi was an early sign that Wake was going to be a force to be reckoned with.
Its been a crazy journey and its been a long road.

By bringing Taylor back into the fold this year, Sparano re-introduced Wakes mentor to him. The added bonus of pass rush coach Bryan Cox also should benefit Wake as he can continue to learn from these two accomplished NFL pass rushers. Im sure people are going to have a little bit more of a plan against him right now to get two bodies on him one way or the other, Sparano said. I think Camerons got to be prepared for that. I think hes been in JTs ear and Bryan ear a little bit on how to avoid some of those things and how to handle some of those things a little bit better. But its not the first time hes seen it. He started seeing it at the end of last year a little bit and its a hurdle that hes going to have to get over. That is probably the greatest challenge hes going to have right now is how people attack him and theyll clearly attack him differently. Its not like Wake hasnt been up to the challenge before.

Kids get clothes for new school year
hanks to the Jason Taylor Foundation, the Old Navy store at the Tower Shops in Davie was transformed into a Miami Dolphins reunion of sorts on Labor Day, with some special school kids the primary beneficiaries. Taylor headlined the Cool Gear For The School Year evening, which began with a party for 60 deserving children from Miami-Dade and Broward counties, and concluded with a onehour shopping spree for school clothes. and to give these kids an opportunity to have some new clothes and kind of show it off in their classrooms and help them feel confident in themselves is really important, Henne said. When I was younger we always had Old Navy trademark T-shirts, so this was a good spot to come to. Taylors brother-in-law, former Dolphins linebacker Zach Thomas, led a strong alumni contingent that included Nat Moore, Twan Russell, Derrick Rogers, Shawn Wooden, Terry Kirby and Twan Russell. Recently retired former Jacksonville Jaguars and New England Patriots running back Fred Taylor also was on hand. Since he has a few years on Henne in the age department, Taylor couldnt as easily recall his elementary school days, but he agreed with the importance of the event. He has been hosting this now for seven years. Ive been in this situation where I needed help and needed new clothes but it was what it was, Taylor said. Im trying to help eliminate
one of those distractions for these kids now and Old Navy has been fantastic. Theyve been great each and every year and whatever we need theyre here to help us. We couldnt ask for a better partner.
Mandichs begins new year legacy lives on as TD Club

or 10 strong years Jim Mad Dog Mandich put his heart and soul behind the Miami Dolphins Touchdown Club and succeeded in giving so much back to the community in the process. On Sept. 6 at Sun Life Stadium, a new decade began in proper form thanks to his son Michael and wife Bonnie. The 11th year of the weekly luncheon kicked off inside the Sun Life Stadium Club Level in Mandichs memory with former Dolphins Kim Bokamper and Joe Rose occupying Mad Dogs familiar place as the hosts on stage. Despite the change of venue from Shulas in Miami Lakes, every effort was made to maintain the aura Mandich created each week. Dolphins quarterback Chad Henne, who played his college football at Mandichs alma mater of Michigan, was one of two special guests. Joe Zagacki, the play-by-play voice of the Miami Hurricanes and a longtime friend of Mandichs, was the other. I think everything went well but well tweak a few things. I already have my list, Bonnie Mandich said. I think Jims here right now and I

told Joe and Bo that earlier that hes looking down making sure everything was going OK and that were not making a fool out of ourselves. I think hed be proud and we hope this will keep going for at least another 10 years. Anyone who was concerned that the lighthearted atmosphere might go away in the new location was quickly reassured when Bokamper dropped the first profanity about one minute into the program. He and Rose kept the jokes coming as the guests came on stage, drawing chuckles from Henne and his wife Brittany. There was a special moment between Zagackis appearance and Hennes that resonated with the crowd. Bonnie Mandich was brought on stage with Bill Fauerbach, vice president of retail operations for Publix Supermarkets, and he presented her with a $15,000 check. Both Zagacki and Henne fielded questions from Bokamper and Rose for about 15 minutes apiece, and Rose even got Brittany Henne involved. She admitted how tough it can be for the quarterbacks wife sitting in the stands and
said she has left some games crying, adding that, Chad gets paid to handle this stuff, I dont. All the while, Michael Mandich observed from the back with a nervous smile. It was a little weird and I had a really tough time sleeping last night, he said. I was just thinking about how many things could either go wrong or what were people going to think about the new venue. There were just a million thoughts going through my mind, but the show goes on, as they say, and I think Joe Rose and Kim Bokamper are going to do a great job. Were really excited about this season. Henne immediately grew close to the Mandich family after being chosen by the Dolphins in the second round of the 2008 draft and he and Pro Bowl left tackle Jake Long have spent lots of time at the Mandich house. Mad Dog was one of Hennes biggest supporters, so he was honored to be at the opening luncheon of the 2011 season. Im glad they kept up with it because it was

always fun to come here, said Henne. He made you feel welcome and he made jokes about it. It was kind of a big joke-around session but at the same time it was serious about football. When Michael called me to be the first guy, there was no doubt in my mind that I wanted to be here and help support this cause because its a lot of fun to come. Besides Michael and Bonnie, the two most nervous people leading up to the one-hour lunch were Bokamper and Rose because those were real big shoes they were trying to fill. Both of them have been on the other side of the coin as guests plenty of times with Mandich, so they wanted to do him proud being the ones asking the questions. I have actually been thinking about this for two or three days because its one of those things you dont want to screw up, Bokamper said. Jim set the bar high and you want to make sure you deliver and you kind of knew what he liked out of it. So I tried to keep it in that same vein, so I had some sleepless hours last night. I know Jim thought the world of Chad and I know Chad felt the same way about him, so to have him here I think made it as appropriate a group of guests that we could have had for the luncheon. Rose, of course, shared the radio booth with Mandich and Jimmy Cefalo for a number of years, so he also felt a strong obligation to keep the legacy going. He was one of Mandichs most popular guests at the luncheon every year. I have felt Jims presence on everything that I have done from his charity event to this, Rose said. Every time Im in the booth something will happen and I almost sense a Mad Dog moment coming in the corner. He is in my brain and in my mind, so this thing being his baby, youve got to bring it every Tuesday because he was so damn good at all of this stuff. He built this up and these are his people. If he was here now he would say, Bring it. Dont throw softballs. What are you worried about? Dont give me that vanilla ice cream stuff. I could hear him saying it now. Bokamper had one final important message to get out there after the luncheon ended. I would ask fans out there to rally around the Touchdown Club and rally around the legacy of Jim because this is very, very important to him, he said. If I didnt know how important this was to Jim I wouldnt have been so quick to agree to do it, but I know what this meant to Jim. I know what it means to him to give money back to the organization and help former players, so anybody that can join the Touchdown Club and be a part

Current star Who is the toughest defensive lineman youve faced?
Incognito: The toughest guy to block would be Kevin Williams up in Minnesota. Hes got a rare mix of speed and power. Hes got a ton of speed and once he gets on your edge hes really tough to kind of push by and hes a smart player. Hes been doing it for a while at a high level and Ive got a lot of respect for him. Sims: The late great Jerome Brown, former Hurricane and Philadelphia Eagle. Thanks goodness he did not play hard every play. He had the rare combination of quickness and strength and great leverage to get underneath you as a guard. I remember my rookie year Richmond Webb and I played every snap of preseason except three plays and we were playing Philadelphia. In the first quarter I was blocking him thinking, OK, this guy isnt too tough. Then for probably the only time in my career, he rushed, picked me up and threw me into Scott Mitchells lap. And that was my welcome to the NFL moment.

offensive lineman. Thats our present. We go out there and grind and work day in and day out and when our back gets 100 yards thats a notch in our belt. Sims: I dont know an offensive lineman that doesnt take pride in that and that was one of the first stats I wanted to see on the stat sheet. We were blessed to have number 13 back there and we knew that he was going to get his numbers but we were always known as a passprotecting line. So we always took such great pride when we were able to get a running back over 100 yards, so tremendous pride.
What attributes make for a good offensive lineman?

Incognito: You have to be smart, youve got to be physical and you have to be disciplined. Athleticism and things like that a lot of guys are blessed with but I think to really distinguish yourself as an elite player you have to be smart, physical and disciplined. Sims: I think people would be surprised at how athletic you have to be as a big man to play the offensive line. I think you have to be very athletic. You have to be very smart and be able to think very, very quickly and change in a split second. But probably the biggest attribute is being able to have non-verbal communication, and Richmond (Webb) and I had that in Miami. From the moment we walked in the building he was always to my left, we used to eat lunch together and hed sit to my left and we knew what each other was thinking all the time.
What offensive lineman did you look up to growing up, and why?
Incognito: Orlando Pace. I really look up to Orlando because I played tackle in high school and I was fortunate enough to play a couple of years with Orlando in St. Louis and I learned a lot from him. Sims: I remember when I was getting recruited in high school one guy that really stood out was Bill Fralic. I actually had a Pitt Panthers poster with him on it and linemen back then really didnt get much hype. I remember him and I followed his career with the Panthers up to when he got drafted in the first round by the Atlanta Falcons. I wanted to be better than Bill Fralic at that time.
What is your best asset as an offensive lineman?

Incognito: It would have to be my power. Sometimes I get in a bad spot and my power just helps me come through. Sims: I dont want to sound arrogant when I say it, but Id have to say it was my intelligence. I was a pretty good athlete as a guard but we had such a complicated system and they installed the left side and we were kind of on our own. Of course Rich and I had the chemistry, so it worked out.

Dolphin Honor Roll Class of 1994 Hall of Fame Class of 1998 Center 6-2, 255 Alabama NFL: 1980-87 Dolphins: 1980-87
wight Stephenson spent his entire career with the Dolphins and was considered by many to be the best at his position ever in the NFL. He was selected to five straight Pro Bowls (1983-87), earning starting honors in four of those contests (1983-86). His four Pro Bowl starts is tied for the fourth-most in team history. Stephenson anchored an offensive line which allowed the fewest sacks in the NFL each of his seasons as a starter and enabled Miami quarterback Dan Marino to set numerous passing records. Stephensons playing career ended prematurely after he sustained torn anterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments in his left knee against the New York Jets on Dec. 7, 1987, when he was hit unexpectedly by Marty Lyons on a New York fumble return. Stephensons greatest honor during his playing days came in 1985 when he was selected as the Miller Lite/NFL Man of the Year for his work in charity and community projects he was the first Dolphins player to win that award. Stephenson also served as an assistant offensive line coach on Don Shulas Dolphins staff in 1992. Before joining the Dolphins as a secondround draft choice in 1980, he had an outstanding college career at Alabama, where he was called the greatest center I have ever coached by the late Paul Bear Bryant. Stephenson was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his sixth year of eligibility after having been a finalist on five occasions. In 1990, he also was voted as the center on the Dolphins Silver Anniversary all-time team, and on Dec. 12, 1994 he was enshrined on the Dolphin Honor Roll at Sun Life Stadium

HISTORY
The Dolphins opened the 1995 season with an explosive offensive display in a 52-14 win over the New York Jets at Joe Robbie Stadium. The 52 points marked the second-highest singlegame total in team history (behind 55 points at St. Louis on Nov. 24, 1977). In addition, the game was played in 94-degree weather, making it the warmest home game in team history. Following a scoreless opening quarter, the fireworks began in the second quarter as the Dolphins jumped out to a 14-0 lead on a 24-yard run by Bernie Parmalee and a 4-yard touchdown hook-up from Dan Marino to Irving Fryar. The Jets rallied to tie the score to 14-14 as Matt Brock scored on a 3-yard fumble return and Charles Wilson caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from Boomer Esiason. Miami scored the final points of the first half as Marino threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to fullback Keith Byars. The second half was all Dolphins as the heat took the flight out of the Jets and Miami rolled to a 31-0 scoring advantage in the second half. The Dolphins scored 21 third-quarter points as Parmalee scored his second touchdown of the game from 4 yards out, cornerback Troy Vincent hit the end zone with a 69-yard interception return and Marino and Fryar combined for a 50-yard score. The Dolphins scored the final 10 points of the game in the fourth quarter as kicker Pete Stoyanovich booted a 29-yard field goal and Irving Spikes hit pay dirt with a 17-yard scoring rush.

After one game, it is hard to tell how good the Miami Dolphins are for the simple reason that the New York Jets are so bad. But we wont have to wait long before finding out. The New England Patriots, fresh off an impressive victory against Cleveland, are next in line for the Dolphins Sunday in Foxboro.Thats when well know for sure whether what we saw in a 52-14 shellacking of the Jets was the real deal or simply a case of the Jets skidding to a new low. Ive got a feeling it was the real deal.

Either the Dolphins have massive talent (as advertised), or that was one huge mismatch against the New York Jets. On the hottest opening day and hottest home game in Dolphins history, the Dolphins had one of their hottest performances, rolling up 52 points when they gave the ball away four times.

How long have you been a fan of the Miami Dolphins, and how did you become one?
Tulowitzki: Ive been a fan since as early as I can remember. I was always watching Dolphins games with my dad and I became a fan because of my dad, even though we both grew up in California. He became a fan because my grandpa was a Steelers fan and the Steelers and Dolphins had some good rivalries when they were growing up, so my dad always went for the Dolphins. And then obviously with Marino. Marino came along and then my dad really fell in love with the team and it just kind of carried on from there.
What position would you play for the Dolphins if you were on the team?
Tulowitzki: I would love to play quarterback. I played quarterback in Pop Warner. In high school I focused on basketball and baseball and I kind of regret that. I wish I had played football just because I love the game. As a quarterback you have to be smart and you have to be the leader of the team. I look forward to studying pitchers all the time in baseball, so now Id just be studying defenses and Id definitely put in the time. I know that quarterbacks nowadays have to always be in the film room, but Id definitely be willing to do that.
and about football. I got to watch Jake Long and I just think for being the No. 1 pick, even though offensive linemen go unnoticed, you could see night and day when he got there how much of a force he is in the running game and how they run behind him.
How tough is to follow the Dolphins during baseball season, especially being in Denver Broncos territory, and do you get any grief from teammates or fans for wearing a Dolphins T-shirt during batting practice?
Tulowitzki: No, they dont give me any grief. All of these guys are from different places, so not too many of us are Broncos fans in there. Obviously, theyre closest to us and some of the players stop by, so you root for them and you want them to win, but we kind of all have our teams. Fantasy football has gotten so big now that theres so much coverage that we watch games in the locker room. Its pretty easy to follow. In the offseason I really dont miss a game
Who on the Dolphins most reminds you of yourself in terms of physical abilities and demeanor?
Tulowitzki: Theres not probably too may guys because theyre so athletic. Not that Im not, but these guys are specimens from what Ive seen. I dont know, maybe Dan Carpenter or someone like that. I always liked the way Zach Thomas played and Im a competitor like him, so Id say out of all the Dolphins hes the guy. He was very competitive, didnt have maybe the best skills in the game but he made the best out of what he had.
What is your favorite Dolphins memory, and why?

Tulowitzki: It was the Marino years and in my opinion I got to watch the best quarterback that Ive ever seen and possibly in the game. What he could do in the pocket, because he couldnt get out of the pocket much, but with the quick release and how he was able to stay healthy and have some big years was great to watch. Obviously, it would have been nice to get a Super Bowl, but he was pretty special, along with the Marks Brothers.
Two years ago you got a chance to visit training camp when the Rockies were down here playing the Marlins. What was that like, and who were you most interested in meeting?
Tulowitzki: At that time Id have to say Bill Parcells. I know hes not with the organization anymore, but I think hes pretty well known in football. Player wise, they were all doing their drills, so I didnt really get to meet any players, but it was cool just to sit there and talk to Bill Parcells and get to know some of the young players that were there and who he liked. Not too many people get a chance to talk to Bill Parcells

I was born on April 20, 1984 in Glen Ridge, N.J. I earned 12 letters at Verona (N.J.) High School, including four in football, four in basketball, two in baseball and two in track. I pitched a one-hitter during my first baseball outing as a high school freshman. At Notre Dame, I finished my collegiate career with 92 catches for 1,112 yards and eight touchdowns and left the school ranking second all-time in receptions and receiving yards by a tight end.
