Linear Motion

(Speed, Velocity and Acceleration)

Prepared by: Mr. J G Chavez for MCS

WHAT IS MOTION?
• A continuous change of position with respect to a
certain reference point.

Prepared by: Mr. J G Chavez for MCS

What is Distance?
• Total length of a path.

What is DISPLACEMENT?
• Refers to the straight line distance between the
starting point and the end point.

Prepared by: Mr. J G Chavez for MCS

What is speed?
• How fast something moves; the distance traveled
per unit time.

SPEED= distance/ time

Prepared by: Mr. J G Chavez for MCS

What is Velocity?
• The speed of an object and a specification of its
direction of motion.

VELOCITY= displacement/ time

Prepared by: Mr. J G Chavez for MCS

What is Acceleration?
• The rate at which velocity changes with time; the
change in velocity may be in magnitude, or direction,
or both.

ACCELERATION= ΔVelocity/ time

Prepared by: Mr. J G Chavez for MCS

Summary of Formulas:
•Speed
s= distance/ time

•Average Speed
save= total distance covered/ time interval

•Velocity
v= diplacement/ time

•Acceleration
a= (vfinal – vinitial)/ time

Prepared by: Mr. J G Chavez for MCS

Summary of Formulas:
•Uniform/ Constant Acceleration
vfinal = vinitial + at
d= vinitialt + (at2)/2
vfinal2= vinitial2 + 2ad

moving with a velocity of +30.0 m/s. The
light turns yellow, and Ima applies the brakes
and skids to a stop. If Ima's acceleration is
-8.00 m/s2, then determine the displacement
of the car during the skidding process.
