Cloud ComputingA New Model for Delivering and Consuming IT Resources

Seagate Point of View 2011

Cloud computing is delivering value to more and more companies as they increasingly utilize and deploy cloud infrastructures to improve their agility and cost structure. Cloud computing is fundamentally driving a change in how business is done, driving growth in new applications and devices, and changing where data is stored. Companies are deploying several categories of business applications that drive rapid data growth and require a more dynamic storage infrastructure to accommodate this growth. Given these deployments and todays dynamic markets, companies need an IT infrastructure that can respond quickly to changing business needs. Cloud computing provides the dynamic elasticity required to achieve these business objectives and handle an increasing level of content served to a more mobile society. Cloud computing drives more applications and compute demand resulting in more storage demand the highest growth service area of the cloud infrastructure today. IDC has estimated that cloud computing accounts for 14.3 percent of the total enterprise hard drive capacity in 2010, expressed in exabytes (EB) in Figure 1 (see following page), growing to 27.6 percent over the next three years, resulting in a 70 percent CAGR (2008-2013).1 Seagate has embraced cloud computing and maintains the broadest portfolio of storage devices to meet the variety of applications, quality of service levels and performance needs demanded. Seagate Unified Storage architecture is well-aligned with the clouds architectural approach to increase simplicity, lower costs and achieve greater scalability. This approach reduces complexity while it optimizes energy efficiency and performance footprint for the data center. In addition, Seagate has adjusted its supply chain model to better align with the consumption-based, price-sensitive, unpredictable procurement process; we are partnering with the players in cloud computing by focusing technical support in critical areas.
