PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT
COURSE OUTLINE
Course Code: MAN 101 Faculty: Dr Humeira J. Abidi Total Credit hours: 45 Duration: 15 sessions (Executive)

1. Overall aims of course


The main theme of this course is to discuss the core management concepts, principles, processes and functions of management. It also highlights the historical and contemporary philosophies of management, and develops the requisite skills needed for effective management in Organizations. Management focuses on the four core functions, namely planning, organizing, leading and control, all of these provide a very sound basis in carrying out the required tasks and goals in Organizations today. The other major aim of this course is to apprise the students about the concept of developing the basic leadership skills, and qualities which are very much needed at this stage, because an effective leader always play a pivotal role in the affairs of any Organization today, so much so that the Organization can even fall apart due to poor and ineffective leadership.

2. Intended learning outcomes of course (ILOs)

a. Knowledge and understanding: Students will be able to demonstrate a clear basic understanding on the four important functions of management, i.e. Planning, Organizing, Leading and Controlling and the steps required in the basic management function to integrate all these functions as one strong ideology so that the entire management function is accelerated from the very mission of the organization all the way to its vision and the implementation of control b. Intellectual skills Students will also develop the ability to systematically analyze and develop the entire management thought process and this will further polish their capability of creative thinking and evaluating a number of options. c. Professional and practical skills The students will also be able to apply the management process to a real organization and indulge in valuable case study solution and presentation exercises through out this course, with a mandatory presentation of a final term report focusing the management functions and their applications in an organization d. General and transferable skills: Group discussion, problem solving and analysis of case studies and presentations there on.
