MY HOUSE SHALL BE CALLED A HOUSE OF PRAYER

John 2:13-22
by: Fr Munachi Ezeogu, cssp

A study on accidental death occurrences shows that (a) 20% of all fatal accidents occur in automobiles, (b) 17% of all accidents occur in the home, (c) 14% of all accidents occur to pedestrians on streets or sidewalks, (d) 16% of all accidents involve travelling by air, rail, or water, (e) 32% of all deaths occur in hospitals, and (f) only .001% of all deaths occur in church during worship services. According to this study, therefore, the safest place for you to be at any given point in time is not in your car, or in the home or in the hospital but in church!

We celebrate the dedication of the basilica of St John Lateran in Rome. Why celebrate the dedication of a church in far away Rome, you may ask. It is to remind us of the importance of the church building as sacred In earlier days, a temple, church space set apart for personal and or shrine was revered so much as collective encounter with God. to suggest that God dwelt Historically, the basilica of St exclusively in such places. People John Lateran is the oldest Church went to church, participated in of Rome and the highest ranking service, received communion and church in the world, followed by went home without knowing who St Peters basilica in the Vatican. was sitting beside them in As such it is the mother of all church. Spirituality was very churches. When we celebrate its individualistic and the man or dedication to God, therefore, we woman sitting next to you was celebrate the mystery of Gods rather seen as a distraction in special presence and indwelling ones intimate communion with in buildings set apart for divine God. Worshippers forgot that we worship, including our own are brothers and sisters, and that we come to church to worship parish church. God as family. July 31 - August 6, 2011

We know that God is everywhere. Yet when the people of God erect a building and dedicate it totally to Gods service, Gods glory comes to dwell in that building in such a way that the building can now be called the house of God. Solomon recalls this mystery in his prayer of dedication of the temple in Jerusalem: Even heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you, much less this house that I have built! (1 Kings 8:27). So, while we celebrate Gods special indwelling in a temple, we must remind ourselves that Gods presence is not confined in the temple. God is still everywhere. But God manifests His glory in a special way in some persons, places, and things. A temple or church is one such place.

To discourage this self-centered religiosity, Vatican Council II introduced some changes in worship such as the priest facing the people at Mass and worshippers exchanging the sign of peace. But we swung from one extreme to the other, and today many Christians have lost the sense of the church as a sacred place, to the point that the comportment of many worshippers in our churches today borders on irreverence. Many Christians have altogether abandoned traditional practices that were meant to remind us that we are in Gods presence when we enter the church. These include such little things as dressing in a decent manner for church, signing oneself with holy water on entering the church, genuflecting or bowing to the altar or the tabernacle before taking ones seat or before leaving the church, not chatting in church, and lowering ones voice when one has cause to talk in church. The loss of the sense of the sacred in church buildings and church worship might be one reason why young people are no longer keen on church attendance. If they come to church thinking it to be another social gathering, no wonder they find it so boring. But when we realize that the church is a holy place, a place of encounter with God, with one another and with oneself, then we bring a certain disposition of mind and body to church service which helps make worship an uplifting rather than boring experience. Todays celebration of the dedication of St John Lateran invites us to renew our faith in the church as a house of prayer and to cultivate habits and practices that make it easy for God to encounter us whenever we go to church.

JEAN-BAPTISTE-MARIE VIANNEY: FEAST D AY - AUGUST 4

_________________ REV. FR. GERARDO P. ARROYO, PAROCHIAL VICAR

St. Jean-Baptiste-Marie Vianney or St. John Maria Vianney was born in the town of Dardilly, near Lyons, France. He was born on 8 May 1786, in the French town of Dardilly, and was baptized the same day. His parents, Matthieu Vianney and Marie Beluze have six children of whom John was the fourth. His childhood years was spent during the time of the French Revolution. During those times priests have to carry out the sacraments in secrecy in fear of being punished severely. Being Catholics, the Vianneys, in order to attend Mass travelled to distant farms where they could pray in secret. In 1802 the Catholic Church was re-established in France. This has resulted to a religious peace. In 1806 John concerned with his future vocation and education was allowed by his father to leave the farm and be taught at the school established by Fr. Balley for ecclesiastical students in Ecully. By the time he entered this school he was about 20 years old. He struggled with his studies, especially Latin though he was of average intelligence; probably it was because of the wars interruption of his past education. It was only his deepest desire to be a priest and his mentors patience he did continue. Again his studies were interrupted when France engaged Spain in a war. Napoleon needed men in this war. He withdrew the ecclesiastical exemption of students from joining this war. John was one of those recruited.

However, on the morning of their departure, he was left behind for he was in the Church praying. Reporting to their barracks he was sent after the troops but that very he met a young man who instead of leading him to the troops led him to another place where some deserters gathered. Staying in Noes for some time cloaked as a school master and remained incommunicado with his family. After fourteen months he was able to contact and return to his family. He returned to his studies at Ecully. In 1812, he was sent to the seminary at Verrieres. He was so poor in Latin that he has to study philosophy in French. After his philosophical studies at Verrieres he took the examinations for entrance to the seminary proper. But he failed. Upon reexamination of the same entrance test three months later, he was able to pass. On August 13, 1815, he was ordained priest by Msgr. Simon the Bishop of Grenoble. His difficulties in making the preparatory studies seemed due to the lack of mental suppleness in dealing with theory as distinct from practice a lack accounted for by the meagerness of his early schooling, the advanced age at which he began to study, the fact that he was not of more than average intelligence, and that he was far advanced in spiritual science and in the practice of virtue long before he came to study it in the abstract. He was sent to Ecully as assistant parish priest of Fr. Balley and replacing the former upon his death in

1818. After that he was made parish priest of Ars, a village not far from Lyons. It was in the exercise of the functions of the parish priest that as the cur dArs he became known throughout France and the Christian world. Few years after he became the parish priest of Ars he founded an orphanage for destitute girls. It was called The Providence. It served as the model of similar institutions established later all over France. Personally, he instructed the children of The Providence in the catechism. Later, these catechetical instructions came to be very popular that they were given every day in the church to large crowds. The Providence was the favorite work of the cur dArs. But this endeavor was closed in 1847 because he thought he was not justified in maintaining the orphanage in the face of the opposition of many good people. His main work was in the direction of souls. After he was assigned as the parish priest of Ars people began coming to him from other parishes, then from distant places, then from all parts of France, and finally from other countries. During the last ten years of his life, he spent from sixteen to eighteen hours a day in the confessional. His advice was sought by bishops, priests, religious, young men and women in doubt as to their vocation, sinners, persons in all sorts of difficulties and the sick. In 1855, the number of pilgrims coming from all walks of life had reached twenty thousand a year. Persons of dignity also visited Ars for the purpose of seeing the holy cur and hearing his daily instruction. His direction was characterized by common sense, remarkable insight, and

FIL - MISSION SUNDAY ___________________

Henry Mota, Special Feature

Ang pagpamihak-pihak sang tinapay ukon ginatawag nga THE MULTIPLICATION OF LOAVES is one of the most loved stories in the Sacred Scriptures and one of the greatest miracles that was overdone by Jesus in His ministry. We have the exchange of deeds of generosity. God is there as a great provider. Jesus performed the miracle which only shows the generosity of God. Generosity is a virtue that comes from God himself. God gave this to humanity in order for them to reciprocate the gift to God and others. The act of generosity must now spring from the person; it should start from within oneself. In the many instances in life, miracles happen out of generosity. God works on this generosity. Generosity also comes from being grateful and joyful of the gift received. This would be passed forward, or one famous film would say it pay it forward. This Sunday is the celebration of Filipino Mission Sunday. This day we remember the Mission Society of the Philippines (MSP), a missionary society which was founded in 1965 by the Catholic Bishops Conference (CBCP); its foundation was rooted on the values of generosity, gratitude, and joyfulness.

We are reminded that our beloved Missionary Society started from humble beginnings. The generous heart of the bishops is instrumental. Their graciousness led to the establishment of the MSP as a continuous concrete act of generosity. The sharing and offering of lives of many of our Filipino Missionaries is a genuine sign that we are indeed thankful to God to the gift of faith received. We thank the Lord by giving back to him our apostolate in the missions. The willingness of missionaries to leave the familiar and comfort confines of ones country so people of other places can know Jesus comes from the simple act of generosity of God by making our country rich in faith. Sa aton pagsaulog sining Domingo sang Fil-Mission, We remember, we pray and we commit our support for our Filipino missionaries who have left home, country and family for the sake of the Kingdom of God, braving deprivations, loneliness and even persecutions. They are out there not to save dollars, but to (pardon the clich) save souls. They are our gift to the world, they who go out with humility and joy to tell the world of His love. Their presence is prophetic. They remind us that money is not everything. Happy Fil-Mission Sunday to one and all!

supernatural knowledge. He would sometimes perceived divine sins withheld in an imperfect confession. His instructions were simple in language, full of imagery drawn from daily life and country scenes, but breathing faith and that love of God which was his life principle and which he infused into his audience as much by his manner and appearance as by his words, for, at the last, his voice was almost inaudible. The miracles recorded by his biographers are of three classes: first, the obtaining of money for his charities and food for his orphans; secondly, supernatural knowledge of the past and future; thirdly, healing the sick, especially children. The greatest miracle of all was his life. He practiced mortification from his early youth, for forty years his food and sleep were insufficient, to sustain life. And yet he labored incessantly, with unfailing humility, gentleness, patience, and cheerfulness, until he was more than seventy-three years old. He yearned for the contemplative life of a monk, and four times ran away from Ars; the last time was in 1853. When he alive he had a great devotion to St. Philomena. He regarded her as his guardian and erected a chapel and shrine in honor of the saint. During May 1843, he fell so ill he thought that his life was coming to its end. He asked St Philomena to cure him and promised to say 100 Masses at her shrine. Twelve days later, he was cured and he attributed his cure to St Philomena. Finally, on 4 August 1859, Vianney died at age 73 in the odor of sanctity. Fifteen years later, on 3 October, 1874 Jean-Baptiste-Marie Vianney was proclaimed Venerable by Pius IX. On 8 January, 1905, he was enrolled among the Blessed. Pope Pius X proposed him as a model to the parochial clergy. In 1925 Pope Pius XI canonized him and assigned 8 August as his feast day. This feast was inserted in the General Roman Calendar in 1928. Finally, he was made the patron saint of parish priest in 1929.
